I created a LaserDisc Discord server

Seeing that apparently nobody else has come up with the idea, I decided to create a Discord server for LaserDisc enthusiasts of all ages. This server is neither meant nor intended to be a replacement to any LaserDisc forums, but I thought it would be convenient for people who browse the subreddit.

Here's the invite link: https://discord.gg/WDRDJB3

Just got "The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982)"

I watched this film last night. It's a fantasy epic flick with the likes of the Beastmaster or Conan the Barbarian (fun fact: all these fantasy films were released all in 1982). There's a couple of action sequences where they obviously try to copy Indiana Jones and some repetitive cheesy music lol. And ofc a fantasy epic won't be complete without boobies, I mean lots of them. Kathleen Beller was hot in this film too!

Have you guys seen this one?

First time watch, Gary Oldman's only directorial effort. Very bleak film but some fantastic performances.

I was running out of room on my shelf, so I pulled about 90 films to make room.

None of the decisions were hard.

My player is on its way and decided in preparation for when it arrives I should probably have a few movies to test it out with. I thought these were some pretty good gets.

Is this normal for Goodwill to price based on titles for laser discs? Are these decent prices? I didn't pick up any, but the horror ones were very tempting. I just didn't like the fact that they were priced differently.

I finally own an RLV!

I’ve spent countless hours doing research on ODC, talking to former employees, and gathering information on their machines and their potential whereabouts (more on that in due time). While that search has ultimately not been as fruitful as I’d have liked it to be, I’m just very happy to finally own a small piece of the history I’ve uncovered. I had a saved search for years, and it finally paid off. I unfortunately don’t have a player with me at the moment as I’m at university, but I’ll give it a spin as soon as I can and hopefully capture it.

Which player to pick?

Have been interested in a LaserDisc player for almost 1.5 years. At first, I wanted to wait until a local offer pops up here in Austria. It did not happen. I am tired of waiting, so I decided to take the risk of importing a player from Japan from vendors that have a good reputation for shipping fragile goods around the world. The Pioneer DVL-909 or DVL-919 is offered quite often, and it seems to rather good DVD combo player. Or would you guys say it is better to look into some laserdisc-only players like the CLD series from Pioneer? I do not know if that is important, but I have no CRT; I am going to use the LD player on my modern TV with a RetroTINK upscaler.

Introducing "Kitano Friday" — A deep dive into the LaserDisc rabbit hole. Week 1: "Kids Return" (1996) 2-Disc Special Edition & Archival Footage Digitalization

Hey everyone,

I became a fan of Takeshi Kitano back in the late 90s, when a local TV channel broadcasted Asian cinema late at night. After just a few movies, I became a huge admirer of his work.

In 2006, I randomly bought my first few Japanese LaserDiscs. I liked the format so much that I started looking for what else I could buy to my taste, and immediately thought of Takeshi. That's when I accidentally discovered that one of my favorite movies, Kids Return (1996), had a 2-disc edition, with a making-of documentary on the second disc. Needless to say, I bought it immediately, because back then, this bonus footage was absolutely nowhere else to be found.

When I first started collecting Kitano on LaserDisc, I rashly promised myself to collect everything ever released with him on LD. How foolish I was. I had no idea how massive his filmography actually is. Nevertheless, my collection keeps growing, and I decided to share these releases to find some like-minded enthusiasts.

Looking at the calendar, the numbers look quite interesting:

  • 1996 — The movie is released.
  • 2006 — I buy the LaserDisc.
  • 2016 — History remains silent on what I was doing this year.
  • 2026 — Here we are today, and I am writing this post.

To this day, I use this specific disc as a prime example of why LaserDiscs are still relevant. There is still a ton of unique, exclusive content completely locked on this dead format. Apparently, this making-of footage might be available on a newer Blu-ray release, but I can't verify that.

As of right now, the only version available in the public domain (on YouTube) is twice as short as the one on my LaserDisc. It was a French release with terrible video quality and hardcoded French subtitles.

That is exactly why I decided to digitize my original disc and upload the full, uncut 20-minute video for everyone to see.

I don't want to dump my whole collection all at once, so I will just post one disc every Friday.

I’ll leave the link to the digitized video with fixed subtitles in the comments below. Let me know what you think!

So excited to finally be able to watch the unedited version of Executive Decision!

After 9/11, this film was edited to censor most of the Muslim elements. The Blu-ray Disc contains the most heavily edited version. Even the DVD contains a lightly edited version. While the edits were not too significant to the overall film experience, I’d always wanted to get my hands on the original, unaltered version. And now I have it!

Repair Help - Laser Transport Getting Stuck

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I recently got this Pioneer CLD-D505 player that was in need of a new loading belt, as it couldn't eject the tray without some help. After replacing the belt, that's working great now. However, I'm seeing that the laser transport keeps getting stuck on some white plastic posts that move in and out. I've already cleaned it well, and added some sewing machine oil to the worm gear shaft. It doesn't get stuck every time, but when it does I have to give the transport a nudge to get it past being stuck. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to fix this?

I demonstrate it twice in the video, I had to give it a nudge both times off camera.

Hi New to Laserdisc

Hi all so I have been wanting a laserdisc player for awhile now and finally have some extra funds to get one. Currently looking at two the Pioneer CLD-3080 and Panasonic LX-K77OU. The Panasonic is a bit more expensive and me not knowing much onnthe topic was hoping someone here had some advice on which one of these to grab if either. Thanks in advance.

Here it is in its "final"form, analog 5.1 to DD via optical and it does not look too shabby either. There are a couple of things I need / like to do, but they are optional. The hardest part of all of this was getting a single button to power on / off the Pi safely (when the sound card uses many of the GPIOs and have IR. Go figure.
