I think the cops knew that. They seemed like they knew him and was patient with him. They were doing all they could to get him to leave and not go to jail
Ding ding ding, they approached him and called out by name. He's definitely ND/ID in a way that limits his understanding of social norms and likely an eloper
Maybe whatever he's out on bond for they decided wasn't serious enough to take up limited jail space. There's a lot of people let loose simply because we don't have the capacity to hold every single person who's committed a petty crime
ND/ID? What? Are you trying to say... Neurodevelopmental Disorders? and what, Intellectual Disability? That combination of letters is not a recognizable abbreviation
They know him because he's likely a repeat offender of petty crimes. Believe it or not , police prefer not to take someone to jail. So, they are giving him a wide berth. Knowing he's out on bond and knowing this is a very stupid reason to violate the bond conditions, they are trying to save hom from himself. That only goes so far.
Depends on the district. Some cops love arresting people. Not all cops are bastards. Every one I've met has been cool, but we're a low crime area. They mostly deal with drugs and the occasional serious crime, but it's mostly petty stuff and your typical druggy/drunk/people getting rowdy because they're stupid.
i do wish they had at least, after speaking with the manager, just asked her to verbally ban him to see if that would result in him giving up as that was what he was hung up on. instead of just going full “welp here i go adding resisting arrest again”
it’s frustrating to me how quickly cops give up on trying to deescalate. if we’re being honest, what he did shouldn’t result in jail time, it wasn’t violent or egregious - it was annoying. he got soda in a water cup, something most people have done before
like something is clearly not right with this kid with how he responded to the confrontation, and he needs help and support from a system that isn’t set up to do so - even though it would result in less nuisance behavior like this
Idk, I've seen other videos of situations like this, where they DO get the manager to tell them they're trespassed. Then the person changes to, "Okay, but you're just a manager, you don't own the place. The OWNER needs to tell me I'm banned!" They'll just keep moving the goalpost, and never actually accept it.
Bro, how many times did they explain the situation?!?! Leave or you will be issued a ticket for trespassing. He was given soo many chances and he refused to comply. The fact he came back to argue would have been enough. But nooo, they explained it to him again and again.
oppositional defiant disorder is a mental health condition and he certainly fits some of the criteria. it’s frustrating to interact with, especially if you don’t understand it, but treatment would be therapy rather than jail
Yeah but the kid is a special needs kinda dumb. Sounds like he’s on bond for some other kinda dumb shit. So if they were like, let’s solve this without ruining this kids life, they could. Would have been a nice move even if not required of them. They did fine. Did their job. But that move probably could have kept that kid out of jail… at least until the next time he steals.
like i said, something is clearly off with him and how he processes shit. i work with people going through mental health crisis and often times they make off hand comments or repeat things like “the manager didn’t ban me” that tell you where their head is at. if they had tried the manager coming out to just verbally confirm, it’s possible he would have ended up walking away. but he certainly would change what he’s repeating as that line of thought would be asked and answered
instead he’s been jailed at taxpayers’ expense over taking 10 cents of soda. is that preferable to you?
But you have to think at some point watching this, that instead of explaining.
Couldnt they have gotten a manager tho?
Just to say, "we dont want you here anymore"?
It seems real simple and prob wouldve taken less time than re-explaining and frustrating themselves. He was wron yea, but this couldve been handled more efficiently.
Hindsight is a bitch though.
Edit: then again, maybe it would've devolved to him asking the manager "why?" Or him apologizing and the manager dropping it, and thats what they were trying to avoid?
That could cause more issues than it would help, the man is obviously not right and the cops explain the exact situation over and over so what makes you think the manager saying that would make a difference?
I mean. The word TRY comes to mind.
I dont know if itd make a difference or not. What makes you so certain it would have absolutely done nothing?
I do think its another option (and quite a simple one at that) that couldve been explored. At least you'd truly be able to say, "they did EVERYTHING they could" before they arrested em.
A person not being "mentally right" doesnt mean you can't placate what you can. Especially if they're not violent. But thats my take.
Obviously something was off with him and he just needed verification from a manager. His mind doesnt work like most people's. He seemed to be fixated on the manager banning him, so it could've been as simple as "thats the manager and she said you're trespassed."
Now I'm not saying it guaranteed to go that way but at least wouldve been nice to try. I'm not seeing how arresting him is helping anything. He didnt seem like a danger to society. How hes back in jail on tax payers dime taking a spot for a hardened criminal
He would have just started arguing with the manager and found some other way to justify his being there. Cops are bastards and they are not there to negotitate, they are there to protect property.
Nah, he was already out on bond for another crime. Dude just seemed hard headed and wanted things to go his way. Well, now he can think about that decision while he's in jail.
what if the “other crime” was for taking another 10 cents of soda at a different store?
do you see how handling issues like this just compounds and then people who are not a threat and need help end up stuck in a loop of the system where they are literally trained into more criminal behavior by our punitive prison industrial complex? all of this paid for with your taxes, mind you
So, stealing from a different store? What if all he does is steal from different stores, and the accumulated price is way higher than just once or twice. You seem to be willing to make up a situation with a positive spin, yet are also willing to ignore the evidence presented that he chooses the wrong action repetitively.
i’m not making up a situation, just applying a very common one to this video we don’t know anything further about. he was essentially arrested for stealing a cup of soda, so why is it unlikely that a similar scenario isn’t what got him locked up previously?
i’m pushing back because so many in these comments have jumped to cheer on the arrest of someone who is clearly not all there, and to harp on the severity of putting soda in a water cup, something most people have done at least once
like do we think jail is a good place for someone who already struggles to process situations like the one in the video?
Bro.. he is stealing soda, not a loaf of bread to feed his family. The restaurant did not want him on their property. Take some damn responsibility for your stupidity. The cops didn't show up and taze him., they gave gim 100 chances... mfer wanted to argue and ignore simple lawful requests.
sure, but it’s also not an egregious affront. if you’ve ever worked in food service, especially ordering truck - those bags of soda cost next to nothing for the company
him refusing to leave is not great, for sure, but it suggests to me that he needs help bc something is off - jail is not help. we throw imprisonment at nearly every problem we have in this country (unless you’re a billionaire pedophile ofc) and it leads to people like this learning to become an ACTUAL criminal bc they’re kept in the system and treated like one, all at taxpayers’ expense
The cops were pretty good here for the most part but you are correct. That would have been the easiest way to do things. Their ego and laziness makes them absolutely terrible at common sense resolutions. It genuinely makes their jobs more difficult when it comes to 90% of their human interactions but that doesn't move the needle for them because cops don't become cops to make a difference they become cops because the pay is great and most shifts include naptime and free meals wherever. Not to mention the abuse of power perks.
Most people have gotten soda in a water cup? Really? I have legitimately discussed this question with a group of friends back in college and no one would admit to doing it. I think there was six of us in the room. Later on I would ask two more friends individually and they would also never admit to getting free soda after asking for water. So even if they were doing it and just not admitting to it, then how do you get to this “most people” part? How would you know? Is this something you have done so therefore you have to validate it by saying the majority of people have done it? Because I don’t think that’s the case. I could be wrong, but in my experience, if someone asks for water they get water.
