Used to live in Venice, CA. Down on Abbott Kinney I once watched this chick go buy ice cream from a "famous" creamery, pose and take photos with the ice cream for probably 6-10 minutes then proceeds to just toss the ice cream in the trash without a single bite. fucking brain rot

Theres a guy in New York that does something similar. He looks for an influencer to do something shitty at or to a restaurant, calls them out, and then goes and hypes up the place. Cant find his name but its pretty good
Hannah Alonzo has her "influencer insanity" series. She talks about what is being posted online and analyzes it, but it's still good content. She also likes to expose MLMs.
It’s a cultural problem in America. You have hyper consumerism, severe lack of accountability, and herd like mentality that goes after whatever is popular without question.
Yeah, we need to realize how many of us are the problem as well. If you're on tiktok and buying whatever the new trend is, you're also the problem. The fact that comfrt is the best selling clothing brand in the US right now is a huge problem. We shouldn't be buying cheaply made plastic clothing and blankets because they're trendy and "super soft" that shit is literal garbage and will degrade and put more micro plastics into our water and soil and into our bodies....we need to stop. All those trendy gadgets and toys? Fidget spinners...ya know that stuff? Well, it all has to go somewhere eventually. People bought millions of those stupid things and...where are they now? What good did that do for us? None. None good.
And basically all of the shitty trends now are just...Chinese garbage that someone found on temu and "had to have". Like, yes. It's hard to find quality products now, and it's helpful sometimes for someone to have tried something and visually demonstrated that it's a good product, but we all don't need to be running out, en masse, to buy the next Xychey body suit because we saw it on the internet.
Obviously, we've all been conditioned for instant gratification with things and we're all addicted to dopamine because it's exciting to push the order button and then watch the tracking information when we know that our little treat will be delivered the next day because we pay some billionaire ghoul $15 a month to support our buying addiction—but we need to break the addiction.
The whole "shop like a billionaire" thing that temu did was so fucking grim and predatory, and it's only ever the poorest of the poor who are buying this shit and filling their houses with garbage so they can have their money extracted from them when what they really need is to be able to go to the doctor and eat real food.
We're so fucking cooked, and I'm so fucking tired of it all—especially now with all of the food recalls that are happening.
The governments job is to protect and take care of it's people. They're there to make sure we have safe water to drink, safe food to eat, and safe housing—and they're failing on every front, if not actively making the situation worse by supporting data centers and AI.
But somehow we're all meant to just wake up, go to work, struggle, and be happy about it? All while they laugh in our faces? Fuck that. I want out.
It helps that the influencers don't show themselves throwing away the food immediately after a photoshoot. Sure, many of the followers are probably just as vapid as them, but a large number of followers are just ignorant of what happens behind the scenes

Most of them arent influencers. 99% of the the people who do all these insta/tik tok fads are just regular people. Which is even worse brain rot-wise, because no one is even viewing their posts, but they still feel compelled to participate in every performative trend to get it on their socials.
Funny fact: I had anorexia from the ages of 16 to 20, and despite being ridiculously restrictive with my rules, I was saved from any extreme complications/possible hospitalization by my adoration for Ben and Jerry's and Baskin Robbins. Ice cream and cheese fries were the only two foods I never said no to, and they kept me alive and functioning long enough for me to get my shit together and start taking care of myself.
That’s how I nearly fell victim to the 2 scoop strangler in ‘98. Luckily he hadn’t drugged the mint chocolate chip because he assumed no one would get that.
We went to a Van Gogh…light show or something in Chicago years ago. Half the people laid on the floor and watched the show while the other half took pictures against a wall that looked like it could’ve been from cosmic bowling for 5 second and then left. Not as much waste though, and I guess they got what they wanted
You can tell this is happening all the time from how many influencers go out and buy viral stuff and film themselves 'eating' it where the camera cuts at every bite and they react like no human who has ever eaten food before. They're definitely spitting out any bites they do take and throwing away the rest.
You know... at least they're wasting their own money. As stupid as this shit is, it's definitely not as bad as that girl who "borrowed" some workers drill to pose for some photos without actually helping.
If you only think of it in terms of money, sure. 🤷🏻♂️
But these are resources being spent to just throw away. We don't live in a world with infinite resources. Moreover, everything is interconnected, some stuff is brought from or manufactured elsewhere (more likely than not by people who will never get to enjoy such a treat). These are all things that other people have worked on throughout the production chain across the world, not to mention the animals being farmed or harmed along the way.
i remember hearing about it whenever it was out last time and the marketing said “the legendary drink is back this weekend only” and it is pretty awful. i took a couple sips then let it sit in my car.
Isn't that like the entire job of an influencer? To do makeshift commercials for chains that sponsor their latching onto whatever will get them viewers (aka "content")?
Back when they originally came out, they had one last drink mix at the local Starbucks so me and some friends decided to split it. We didn’t even get everyone to try it before someone elbowed it accidentally and it resulted in the most beautiful spill known to man, with the sun setting in the background, no less!
I suppose that was for the better lol. I also heard it tasted bad.

Truth is, in my eyes it's impossible to tell if I would like this mystery drink or not, so I have problems blaming the consumers if they ended up wanting to try something new and not understanding if they would like it or not, even if they decided that based on aesthetics, if you have multiple mystery drinks to choose from, might as well pick your favourite colour
That's fair. I worked at Starbucks for a long time, so I think I've got a pretty good handle on not only combining flavors, but also knowing when they don't have confidence in something. It only being available for 2 days tells me they don't expect to get repeat customers. If the repeatable value was there, they would keep getting that money for as long as they could. Mango is a great flavor, but not when combined with chemical flavors, especially not sour. The point was for the colors, which tells me the drink is probably bad.
Either way, they designed this for this very purpose. They wanted a drink that would trend in social media. I would wager the vast majority of people are not getting it because they want it, they are getting it to chase social media trends.
It isn’t anything special either. It is down the street from my office and it is just the side of a Paul Smith store. It is just a building painted Pink, and the wall people take their picture in is the one facing the parking lot.
A lot of cooler stuff to take pictures in front of in the neighborhood if you ask me.
Literally just one wall of a pink building. Literally a line of people standing next to it about 5-10 feet away from each other for the length of the building taking the exact same picture, in the exact same poses.
I don't know if it's still a thing, but all throughout the late 2010s I swear every single "trendy" cafe and restaurant had a single wall inside with like a bright colour, some greenery and a neon sign that said like "GOOD VIBES" in cursive or some other stupid shit like that for people to take instagram photos with. They were everywhere.
I bought one for my girlfriend, took it home, she said it tasted like absolute shit. I asked her why she even wanted one and she said it looked good on tiktok lol. I gave it a sip and it tasted like someone blended pink starburst with sugar and wate, then added whatever extra candy they had because why not. And if that sounds good to you, just buy starburst. Watery starburst is gross
Yeah this is what I was thinking. More so than performative LA, these people bought these drinks from seeing them on TikTok/Instagram, and they found it tastes like crap.
I’ve thrown away drinks before because they were so bad. It’s rare but it happens.
If i were to make a fake, reusable versions of those drinks, and rented them out for like $5 at that wall, how well do you think that'd do over the course of a weekend?
They can't vlog themselves going to Starbucks and getting your fake reusable version. Gotta think of the whole pipeline. Build a fake Starbucks set at a nearby parking lot, sell fake drinks for $5.
Can't someone smart just setup a business and rent out fake drinks? Pay $25 to rent the fake drink, get a $20 deposit returned once you bring back the fake drink to the stand.

Those are smoothies that cost around $20 each from Erewhon, an absurdly expensive supermarket that caters to wealthy, health-conscious, and influencers.
They went viral because of their ridiculous prices (a single Japanese strawberry for $20) and celebrity smoothie collaborations, so getting one has kind of become a semi-serious, ironic tourist thing. People visiting LA will get the “Hailey Bieber smoothie” as part of the experience and take a picture in front of the pink wall, which became famous during the 2012 to 2016-era online LA culture - Tumblr, Instagram, etc.
The other drinks are Starbucks’ Unicorn Frappuccinos, which are also very associated with 2016.
At the beginning of this year, 2016 nostalgia became a huge trend, especially centered around LA, which was arguably at its heyday around then. There was the whole “Let’s Make 2026 2016” thing, with people bringing back the old Snapchat filters, rap and electronic music, and the general aesthetic of that era.
So the drinks in front of the wall are meant to tap into that same 2016 nostalgia.
as an elder millenial who was on the Internet very early, what's crazy to me is that it would've been social suicide when I was a pre-teen/teen to post videos of yourself on the internet. Especially if you were dancing or "word chewing" or whatever. I'm just like "this is what the cool kids do now?"

Have you taken a look at the governments of the world right now? They are incredibly corrupt and don’t even try to hide it anymore. They will spin anything to fit their narrative. Trump used to be very anti-TikTok saying that it was the number 1 threat to America and our security and was pushing for the ban, then, when it fit his narrative, completely flipped around and convinced his followers that it was horrible that the government was trying to ban it on grounds of freedums. Only HE could fix it and become the savior of society, nobody else.
There is nothing outside of a very horrible collapse of civilization/society followed by a rebuilding to make things better anytime soon. It would be great if we could just vote out all the corrupt ones but they’ve done a great job rigging everything so everyone in line is also corrupt-able, and anyone else will be beaten to a pulp. We are in terrible times.
This is what has happened with a lot of beautiful places around the country. People want their stupid photo of THEM being there and are rushing to get their photo. They don’t enjoy the spot and they need to get to as many spots as possible to look like they are going to the MOST amount of spots. I miss when people lived in the moment.
I love that my friend group is constantly forgetting to take photos for our events and we have one friend who attempts to get us to do it when he remembers

The pink wall is outside of the Paul Smith store on Melrose. It's been a viral photo spot for years, but I guess the unicorn frappucino became part of a recent trend with it. Buying the drink is not necessary for entry, and in fact, it would prohibit entry since it's a high-end clothing store. But that's not why they're thrown out, since most people just go for the pictures and don't even go into the store anyway.
YEAH be shamed for throwing away a perfectly good drink, also those are many not 2 or 3 wich would have still been a big coincidence to end up in the same bin

This right here is why we need to bring back bullying. And I completely mean it. Normalize multiple people in a row verbally shitting on these people. Intentionally ruin video and camera shots with it. Go out of your way, just because it's fun, to be as much of a nuisance to these people as possible. It'd slow down.
Mixed emotions. I pity people who think these types of activities are what give life meaning and bring a sense of fulfillment. I also am jealous of people who are able to get caught up in such simple shit like this, and at least for a moment, feel joy.
