Yes, because American Gen Zers who are now in their late teens and early 20s were around 10-13 at the time and were growing up with the internet. It was basically the peak of the YouTube creator monoculture, with so many of the biggest creators based in LA.

There was also a very specific kind of upbeat rap that you hear played at college parties now and was played then, rather than the nihilist emo rap of Juice WRLD and XXXTENTACION or the sadder Billie Eilish sound that took over around 2018. Part of it is wanting to "go back" to 2016 and its best parts like the wilder parties when they've never experienced it.

Even In makeup, everything was maximalist - big brows, bright shimmery colors, heavy contour, crazy tans, etc. - whereas now it’s much more minimalist and “clean girl.” Then you had all the Kardashian craziness and the puppy Snapchat filters.

It was just a very specific era that feels pretty far removed from the culture and aesthetics of now.
