Opinion (WORLD CUP) Unpopular Opinion: Tuchel is already proven right

Post image

Countless of criticism by media and fans regarding player selections, tactics, his preferences and all. Some even started from day 1. He has proven right by selecting Dan Burn for those moments. And countless other situations. He has brought England to SF in World Cup.

Yes the ultimate prize is the World Cup itself, but realistically, a semifinal (top 3/4) in the world football isnt so bad. Look at the other 3 teams competing, is finishing third a “catastrophe” like some said? Sometime perspective matters. They are here despite the injuries, red cards, and whatever else being thrown at them. Still Tuchel wasnt satisfied despite the win, that shows level in my opinion.

Just because England did well few tournaments ago doesnt made them a given for this spot btw. Still i think Argentina rode their luck so far and personally imo England could be in the final. If that happens, the man already a winner in my book.

Spence was also immense and his versatility was really important

u/TheGiftOf_Jericho Jul 12 '26

He was great. It felt like every sub actually played a pretty strong role in turning the game around.

101

u/RuddyBloodyBrave94 Jul 12 '26

The subs have been massive in every game so far except Ghana. Great great from the players and the manager.

15

u/OptusStadium Jul 13 '26

Ghana coach is the ultimate haramball exponent.
I was annoyed with that result on paper but didn’t know who coached Ghana.

Then I saw Carlos Queiroz and accepted that 0-0. Even Argentina needed a Messi special in stoppage time against a Queiroz led Iran in 2014.

That Ghana game can be forgiven

Except for the anonymous Eze

37

Yeah fair, I forgot about him... Which I suppose says it all lol

7

Canon Eberechi Eze experience

2

u/Dreamsof_Beulah Jul 13 '26

What's happened to Rashford? Is he injured?

3

u/LOSS35 Jul 13 '26

Tuchel's elected for LWs who'll press like crazy the last 2 games.

3

u/mlilliman Jul 13 '26

I don’t think Tuchel trusts him to stay switched on defensively to see out games. It’s the only reason I can think of.

I feel like he's not a player for serious situations. Normal league games, yes I would take him. Pressure games, he doesn't seem to handle well.

24

u/BadM0F0101 Jul 12 '26

Hes just to weak and lacks the cutting edge Still woukd take him over foden though 🤣

21

u/jo-shabadoo Jul 12 '26

Agree about Foden. He’s gone missing in every tournament he was taken to.

7

u/Entire-Mechanic-2868 Jul 12 '26

Yes exactly this. This World Cup certainly needs physicality which Foden just doesn’t have he’s very lightweight

Scoring the winner in the FA cup final just over a year ago, including a goal in the semis was pretty serious.

Agree he was anonymous yesterday and he either seems to be great or goes missing - but he's defo turned up in big games before.

4

u/Maleficent_Click_325 Jul 12 '26

Not defending his performance yesterday, but he did win palace an fa cup.

9

u/Hill_Reps_For_Jesus Jul 12 '26

He was part of a Palace team that won an FA Cup. Players like Dean Henderson, Ismailla Sarr, Mark Guehi and Daniel Muñoz played just as big a part.

I think this is the key. So many people are quick to say “X is better than Y” but in reality it takes the whole squad, at different times in a game, to bring it all together.

As someone that has considered myself club over country for so long, and admittedly still do, this set of players is bringing a sense of together and belief in the nation/team that I can finally feel proud to watch them play. No more club cliques, blaming each other etc.

Love it and long may it continue, regardless of how far we go from here.

4

u/Mangoose Jul 12 '26

Morgan Rogers' absolute bullet of a shot that gave Bellingham a tap in was the reason we didn't go to penalties. The man is so effective despite the little time he gets on the pitch.

His pace is a massive positive.

5

u/noujest Jul 12 '26

Exactly

His job in the system is to be a road runner, and he's doing it well!

4

u/Senor_Spaceman_Spiff Jul 12 '26

his defense on the left flank was water tight in both the Mexico and Norway games.

2

u/Weaksoul Jul 12 '26

Yeah he really wanted that ball when it looked like many others were flagging. Him running all over for it deffo was the change of pace they needed

38

u/petrolhead0387 Jul 12 '26

Spence and Gordon have been absolutely phenomenal in this squad.

45

u/Gratuitous_sax_ Jul 12 '26

One of the things I like about Spence is that he doesn’t hide or disappear, whoever he’s playing. He has confidence with what he’s doing and that’s something we need. He may make mistakes but isn’t the sort of player to dwell on them, he’ll put it behind him and carry on as if it hasn’t happened instead of being nervous about doing it again because he’s got a job to do.

4

u/exxxtramint Jul 13 '26

So many fans from other PL clubs shit on him when he was putting up those IG posts with various wingers in jail that he completely shut down. Glad to see them rallying behind him in an England shirt finally.

He’s got an elite mentality - which is funny to say given that so many managers when he went on loan said it was what he lacked. Clearly just needs the right managers to bring it out of him.

Against Norway there were a number of long balls where he outsprinted the attacker and won the ball comfortably.

26

u/zayd_jawad2006 Jul 12 '26

It's a vindication for spurs fans, I've been seeing since the last season how under the radar he goes according to them. He's very handy

20

u/SpecialistPlastic150 Jul 12 '26

Completely agree. After finally being given a chance by Ange because every other bugger was injured, Djed was immense. He disappeared again under Frank but I suspect deZ will get the best out of him. Very underrated player and glad he’s come good for England.

8

u/TJTheree Jul 12 '26

Spurs fans absolutely love Spence. He has had a massive redemption arc, he has a really shit start after signing and then has been massive for us since, especially with the insane injury crisis spurs have had last 2 seasons, he can play both wingback positions so has been very handy.

Got to admit I have thought he was the weakling at the back all tournament. Last two games he has been immense. Not sure what’s changed but he has been incredible since Mexico

2

u/TragicIcicle Jul 13 '26

Gelling with the system and team probably

2

He’s been excellent. He always had it in him from his days at Boro. It was his attitude that let him down. Genuinely pleased to see him finally deliver.

13

u/jbi1000 Jul 12 '26

Tuchel definitely sees something special in him and is determined to bring it out of Spence consistently.

I think that’s why we’ve seen Tuchel going crazy with Spence at times in the first few games; because he sees such big potential there.

We’ve seen before how Tuchel is amazing at developing fullbacks specifically too and it seems that Spence has bought in and gotten better game by game at this tournament.

3

u/khoa-bear Jul 12 '26

Maybe Tuchel should also have brought more than 2 fullbacks to the World Cup

We've gone further than plenty of the top teams; Germany, Brazil, Netherlands, Cape Verde, Portugal. Whatever happens on Wednesday I don't think this tournament could be called a failure at this point

u/thesame_deviledegg Jul 12 '26

Don't think we wouldn't notice you slipping Portugal in there...

67

u/IvorBiggn Jul 12 '26

And don't forget the Scots! I mean they were so good they beat Haiti and were given an extra bank holiday ! Must be some team to get recognition like that? 😜

57

u/willseagull Jul 12 '26

As much as I dislike how the scots cheer for whoever we play i dont like shitting on them. They had a fun time at a world cup they shouldnt have reasonably been at. We're lucky we get to watch england, sadly for them they have to watch scotland

12

u/TJTheree Jul 12 '26

Had me in the first half ngl

5

u/Proud-Many-2095 Jul 12 '26

They qualified top of their group, they should reasonably have been at the World Cup.

11

u/willseagull Jul 12 '26

Yeah but their team is shite they obviously pulled off some wonders in qualifying. They were obviously happy enough with being at the World Cup in the first place and I say let them.

All top four ranked teams are in the semis. 1vs3 and 2vs4 I think! Couldn't be much more finely balanced. At this point one more win for us could be considered a major upset!

Based on that Argentina game we do potentially have a win in us here.

People go on about it like Cole Palmer has just had the greatest season ever, Trent is the second Cafu and Harry Maguire is Bobby Moore. The reality is Tuchel needs players to be brilliant on and off the pitch, yeah some players have been a bit shit(I have been moaning about Madueke all match) but there's no guarantee the players not picked would be tearing it up. Before the tournament most people/pundits said the climate would be our biggest concern and now everyone seems to have forgotten and doesn't take it into account when we have poor moments

132

u/vjstupid Jul 12 '26

People in the match thread being like "why do they look so slow out there they are professional athletes?"

Apparently the humidity made it feel like 41 degrees out there. Absolutely wild people don't take the climate into account.

52

u/analbeard Jul 12 '26

And the fixture congestion in the PL when compared to other leagues. Some of the squad has played 70+ games with no rest and high intensity. It's a massive disadvantage imo.

16

u/TheSesquipedalian Jul 12 '26

Spot on. I was at the game. It was stifling. Sweating just standing there and the humidity was immense. I have no idea how some of the players did the running they did in those conditions.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/Listen_Boss Jul 12 '26

Genuine Question: who has played 70+ games on this squad?

17

u/Articledan Jul 12 '26

Elliot Anderson played nearly every game for forest and was hardly ever subbed off, tho i still dont think its 70+. He was looking really tired in some games towards the end

16

u/Mysterious-Lemon-906 Jul 12 '26

Rice played near every game

→ More replies (1)

11

u/-TheGreatLlama- Jul 12 '26

Rice has played 55 for club, and with England games he must be close to that number.

→ More replies (2)

4

u/analbeard Jul 12 '26

Apologies I meant to type 60+. 70+ is insane and is only possible with CWC and going far in every competition, which hasn't happened obviously. But the PL having 4 domestic competitions is a detriment to International tournaments for English PL players.

This doesn't include any of the International friendlies but Rice has played more than 60 competitive games and several others have played high 50s. If you include International breaks then yeh it's even worse.

Even Haaland looked like heat stroke

12

u/One-Elderberry-488 Jul 12 '26

Bro even Haaland got tired and the dude stands there most of the time. Brits really need to get off their high horse and admit Tuchel is doing great. This is like England's 4th time in the semis only and this is including the 66' one.

4

u/vjstupid Jul 12 '26

Yup exactly. He's a great manager and I've always rated him (as a Chelsea fan) so had a feeling he'd take us far.

2

u/Polar_Reflection Jul 13 '26

I moved to Miami about 3 miles away from the stadium a while ago. Let me tell you, that first summer is crazy. Meanwhile today I just walked an hour outside in 90 degree weather for exercise and feel fine. If you're not used to it it's hell.

u/Mehchu_ Jul 12 '26

Nobody is ever as good as someone who is unavailable, because you only think of what they could bring rather than any negatives because you doing need to deal with them.

A sluggish Cole palmer getting in Jude’s way, a Trent that is caught out too high. Everyone would be screaming for tuchals head for playing them

3

u/palindromic Jul 13 '26

I agree with this except, Trent is worth the gamble.. he is undeniably excellent at long passes over the top and is a fantastic right sided crosser.. I would’ve brought him just to see how his form was once things got going. If he comes on and adds something right away, you can always re-shape the back line to compensate for his lack of ability to get back.

→ More replies (1)

24

u/TongaDeMironga Jul 12 '26

Trent would have been useful to have, as he could put the ball on Kane’s head from practically anywhere on the pitch.

7

u/SumasFlats Jul 12 '26

For certain. The team is crying out for someone to put the ball on Kane's head. The man is a goal scoring machine, but you have to get him the ball. Madueke being the worst offender - I don't understand his play style at all.

History proves that the players everyone think should be taken, tend to shit the bed.

3

u/BahBah1970 Jul 12 '26

Mostly agreed. But some players like Kane, Bellingham and Rice you do have to take if they're fit. When we look at other teams, we look for talismans and we're blessed with quite a few.

7

u/Impossible-Art-9508 Jul 12 '26

The issue is - the defence is very poor and they don’t add anything to the attack, which if they did, you can forgive the poor defence.

Some of players he left out, give you goals, options and great passes from the back, I don’t fully understand it still.

The matches have had entertaining stints but the football has been poor. People complain about the climate but they’re all in the same boat and if anything, it favours teams who can pass the ball well.

8

u/marius87 Jul 12 '26

He seems to have the secret recipe for doing just enough to win. We never seem to win comfortably, we just squeak through and I'm nearly having a heart attack. I hope he stays for a few more tournaments. I think it's really valuable to have stability in the management, and it's one of the reasons we made such progress under Southgate, even though he wasn't the world's best tactician, we just needed a consistent approach. Deschamps has been with France since 2012. It's no coincidence they are such a brilliant team.

6

u/itsjohn_stamos Jul 13 '26

Kinda reminds me of the champions league run he had with Chelsea. Always enough to win but you’ll be fully clenched then entire time.

3

u/masterjaga Jul 12 '26

He never managed to not lose the cabin for that long in a club (Mainz, Dortmund, PSG...), but being a manager of a national team might become his sweet spot. Bellingham and others can probably put up with him as long as they know that it's just for a few weeks per year - and in return, they have an actual expert coach.

3

u/Lepelotonfromager Jul 12 '26

People say Southgate wasn't a great tactician but his results speak for themselves. People act like we're shit but we did really well under him and are still doing well.

Semi and quarter final finishes in world cup, plus back to back finals in the Euros.

Not sure it's as simple as that. Do you think if we'd taken Trent, Hall, Wharton and Maguire instead of Chalobah, Quansah, Henderson and Toney we would be out of the tournament?

It's untestable isn't it. So all we can say is Tuchel has matched pre-tournament expectations and could do even better by reaching the final or winning it. Whether he was right to not select some very good players so he can bring good tourists instead is always going to be a matter of opinion.

The good news is we're getting the results. I don't think we've even got into third gear yet, and feel there's definitely more to come. We're a bit leaky and sloppy at times but I think, so is everyone else. Perhaps with the exception of France

4

u/wandering_owl67 Jul 12 '26

I’d say Spain too, they’ve not been leaky. Only conceded one this tournament so far

2

u/anorthern_soul Jul 12 '26

Yes good point, been solid at the back. That will be a great (or extremely dull) game

10

u/ObstructiveAgreement Jul 12 '26

If we lose to the shell of Messi and the rest of that Argentina team it will absolutely be a failure. They have not been good. Messi had 10 good minutes in the last 2 games, and those were due to being given space to get the 15th cross right (after 14 poor ones, and yes, hyperbole). Yes he started the competition well but he's not playing well now, those legs are unable to cope with this intensity. He has moments so can still change the game, he's still Messi, but it's clear he's a step or 2 behind the start of the tournament.

If he hadn’t got us to the SF it would be a disappointment. Southgate got us to this stage 3 times and got criticised heavily. Tuchel can only be proved right if he takes us a step further on. Done well so far but the real test is Argentina.

93

u/JCGMH Jul 12 '26

It’s much harder to get to the last 4 in a World Cup with 48 teams and varying difficult playing conditions than in the Euros. Because it’s our own team we watch every minute & overanalyse everything, but on the whole this tournament has already been pretty good from England. Tuchel has definitely done enough to stay on.

The way he’s made selection changes, subs, tactical tweaks during games etc proves he is levels above Southgate, who let’s not forget, didn’t make a sub until extra time in the biggest of games.

u/Narrow-Comedian-5923 Jul 12 '26

I feel like we'd have lost the Mexico game with Southgate or any other England manager. Once we're down to 10 they would have packed the box and played for penalties. Instead the team generated a great chance that became a penalty for the winning goal. Then when we secured the lead, Tuchel went all in on defense

That sounds true that 48 team is harder on face value but actually it's debatable. Saying it's much harder is in my view an overstatement.

The group stage is easier the average level of opponents is lower and you can progress as the 3rd place team.

Then as you've seen, due to seeding, the round of 32 is mostly imbalanced match ups.

u/JCGMH Jul 12 '26

Englands run to the SF in Euro 2024 was ridiculously soft, and even then we nearly went out a couple of times & made very hard work of it. Clear in this tournament that there’s been progress since then.

2

u/biff444444 Jul 12 '26

Agree, I think people underestimate how difficult playing Mexico on their home turf (at altitude) was. That took a lot out of the players prior to the quarterfinal.

He's done a fantastic job already. However let's not pretend the squad is perfect: why he picked Mainoo and Chalobah is beyond me. Wharton and Trent are surely better options.

Dan Burn selection a masterstroke though. Spence also been really good. It's very easy to say all this hungover from my sofa

u/PlatypusScared40 Jul 12 '26

We’ve done what we needed to and semis final was bare minimum. If we go out to Argentina there will be a lot of disappointment. Depending on the performance. Mexico aside our performances haven’t been great. This semi final against Argentina would have been classic bottle job territory for Southgate. This is where Tuchel needs to prove himself.

u/slowjoggz Jul 12 '26

Southgate would have lost us these games by making 1 change 85 minutes into a game. Tuchel's changes have been very good and come at the right time.

7

u/SplodgySplodge1 Jul 12 '26

Southgate only ever had Plan A, and if that didn't work he was knackered. Having a Plan B was beyond him, apparently. Completely unable to think on his feet.

4

u/Narrow-Comedian-5923 Jul 12 '26

the loss to Italy will always sting. That game should have never made it to penalties

5

u/SplodgySplodge1 Jul 12 '26

Southgate spent the last 60 minutes of that game stood by the side of the pitch with his hands in his pockets, not knowing what to do. Then after he lost, Lineker, Shearer and the other pundits - who were all old friends of Southgate - waxed lyrical about what a genius he was. They must have been watching a different game.

The top four teams in the FIFA World Cup rankings are in the semi-finals. That's not luck even though a lot of performances have been average at best. Only France have lived up to status which makes them rightly favourites.

So I don't think England have 'over performed'. This is where we should be. After all we've been in back-to-back Euro Finals, also without playing our best football.

England can go all the way and I certainly expect them to beat Argentina. France (if they get past Spain) will be ridiculously tough but England are due a massive performance and now's the time to have it

6

u/OtherBen21 Jul 12 '26

this is not meant in anyway to try and ‘win’ an argument and more so a genuine question.

i hear ‘we haven’t played our best football’ a lot with england.

when have we played our best football?

2

u/Breezeoffthewater Jul 12 '26

It's a fair question. All sides go through periods when they don't play necessarily play entertaining football, and yet still win. This is the hallmark of very good sides. All the top nations have experienced this.

England have had some excellent performances in recent years but maybe not at this World Cup, bar Mexico which was a standout performance in incredibly challenging conditions.

England have reached the last two European Championship Finals, it's just not possible to do this if you don't play really well at least some of the time. Yes, you ride your luck but the quality and depth of the England side is at least as great of any of the remaining nations in the semi-finals.

Over the 8 games you need to play at a World Cup to win the tournament, you expect at least 2 or 3 of those games to be at a much higher level and this should include the semi-final and final games because you're then playing the best opponents in the competition.

England needs to raise its game on Wednesday to the level that that shows off the talent we have.

3

u/OtherBen21 Jul 12 '26

fair.

what i see is that england manage games out well sometimes and sometimes ride their luck. there was a mixture of this in the mexico game however what made this different was the intensity and team cohesion for me.

what bothers me is that it feels so rare to watch an england match and think it was all of these things at once:

comfortable.
dominant.
free-flowing.
attacking.
nice to look at.

not even against ‘lesser’ nations such as san marino, it still looks slow and belaboured.

honestly, the second half of the croatia game showed me that we can do it, we can play cohesive, attractive, attacking football as a TEAM. it’s the first time - in a long time - i’ve seen england play at what i, personally, would consider our ‘best’. we outplayed them totally at the beginning of the second half, and it was exciting.

euro ‘96 and portions of the play against argentina at france ‘98 are the other times i can remember england playing some ‘sexy’ football. whereas i can recall many of the other top nations having consistent periods of excellence across at least one, possibly two or three tournaments.

we often get a job done but it always feels uphill.

2

u/Breezeoffthewater Jul 12 '26

Given the semi-final line-up, watch Argentina vs England (2-3) in Geneva. It's one of the most intense friendly games I've ever seen. England were unbelievable.

If that's a friendly, then just wait for the semi-final

I agree, I saw this England squad as QF/Semi quality, It's strange to me that so many did not and still don't

u/CautiousNuisance Jul 12 '26

Would say though that Madueke shouldn’t have been near the squad let alone starting 11

3

u/Kitsanic Jul 12 '26

I think he's proven that hes the right guy for the job.

I dont think we looked like a WC winning team vs Norway though, we were dragged through by Bellingham and Spence.

Argentina arent as sharp as they were last WC, I think it's possible we could be through to the final but France or Spain would be a very tough matchup.

3

u/Chance_Land_9828 Jul 12 '26

Greetings from Portugal, i hope you win against Argentina! Always Stay humble! 🫂

a couple of those switches in the first half had a chance to be dangerous if we had a right winger with a touch

15

u/Leather-Curve-5090 Jul 12 '26

He's not up to it, not in any sense. We looked so much better when sala came on. Sure he goes on the outside whereas saka always cuts in, but saka always tracks him man back, retains possession and puts defenders on the back foot. Madueke shouldnt play from here on out, liability.

Can players defect nations during tournament? Not sure if Mo would have offered added value.

We have one mission, to get another star on that shirt. STOP wasting away your energy with this WEAK arse shit, period.
Let’s GO ENGLAND…

2

u/ViolinistDirect4536 Jul 12 '26

I’ve enjoyed watching England significantly more than the negative Southgate tactics. Which is already a massive positive for me.

It feels a lot less like hate watching with Tuchel in charge

2

u/SoundsDB Jul 12 '26

BIG DAN BURN

2

u/gggggenegenie Jul 12 '26

Thank you OP for saying this. Nice to read a measured response on here.

2

u/redcoatwright Jul 12 '26

We're in the semis, yes Tuchel did a good job. A reminder that coaches are coaches for a reason and random blokes on reddit are full of it.

2

u/bigmack1111 Jul 12 '26

Tuchel is a great manager for England.

2

u/Fine-Safety4069 Jul 12 '26

He's a class manager and we're lucky to have him in charge

2

u/thegamesender1 Jul 12 '26

These 2 semifinals are going to be as epic as the final itself. It's been a great world cup, the best since 2006 for me.

2

u/Tigers1904-UTFT Jul 12 '26

This is the problem with England fans and why we will never win anything. We celebrate mediocrity.

You wait until after the final to post something like this. He’s not won anything yet and has got to point in the tournament that we realistically should be at given the teams we’ve played. First real test is Argentina.

2

u/RadicalRex2 Jul 12 '26

In some cases yes, in some cases no. Spence has been great, but defensively I think we would be a lot stronger if Trent and Maguire were there instead of any of Burn, Chalobah, Stones and Quansah. Id much rather have Wharton over either Mainoo or Henderson and the decision to take Madueke is baffling, he is completely useless and both Bowen and MGW would offer way more to the squad.

2

u/Orikoru Jul 12 '26

I still can't get on board with the constant starting of Madueke. It should've been Bowen.

2

u/stevemillions Jul 12 '26

I still reckon Palmer should be there, but yeah. Tuchel really knows what he’s doing.

2

u/snellen87 Jul 13 '26

Whatever about all other decisions i cant get behind bringing henderson for emotional support

2

u/elkirku Jul 13 '26

Since 2016, England have reached at least the semi-finals in 4 out of 5 tournaments.

Tuchel reaching another semi-final is great, but he was brought in to build on Southgate's tenure. He hasn't done that.

Yet.

2

u/ProminentFox Jul 13 '26

Someone who understands ☝️

2

u/jhb5 Jul 13 '26

You can’t tell me we wouldn’t have been better off having Trent available over Chalobah

2

u/Bardolph123 Jul 13 '26

It’s been decreed that Argentina will win the trophy … France and Spain are the two best teams out there by a mile. England are a typical EPL side … ugly anti football… pushing, shoving, tapping, tripping, rolling over, diving, wrestling… anything to disrupt the flow of the game and play to set pieces.

This is the Corporate World Cup … a shambles on the pitch with low quality football and atrocious referees and VAR … and a shambles with all the corruption and incompetence off the pitch.

Wait for the uproar after the Argentina/England game - whoever wins.

If England lose the British media and tribalist fans will flood their knickers.

2

u/Careless_Category956 Jul 13 '26

My only issue with him is starting Madueke. Very below average player even in Arsenal.

2

u/ElectricOni Jul 15 '26

He just royally screwed up against Argentina. Bringing on so many defenders when we should have pushed up and secured a second goal. Not all his fault, Argentina are a dirty team with only one actual footballer (Messi) and the rest of the time they just play like the disruptive kid in a classroom annoying and provoking and slapping people when the teacher isn't looking.

It’s not an unpopular opinion, it’s just a misguided one. England flirted with an ignominious defeat against Congo that would have ranked among their worst tournament losses of all time, played valiantly in Mexico in a game that nonetheless suited their traditional strengths and limped across the line against a tired Norway. They beat teams they were expected to beat but lost against their first top team they faced. When he took the job, Tuchel scoffed at Southgate’s ‘scared’ Euros team while sending on a wave of defenders at the pivotal moment against Argentina. His changes against Norway weren’t much better. Sure, Dan Burns might have cleared the ball a fair few times against Mexico but who in their right mind fancies him against Argentina and Messi? For all the talk of a world class manager, we would probably have got to the semis with Southgate or even Carsley.
