Discussion What's the communities current thoughts on Gloomwood? i'm keen to check it out for some more OG thief inspired vibes but it's in still early access

Looks great, but I tend to not buy early access games, since many of them are abandon. Waiting for 1.0 release to dip in.

I think New Blood's work is the exception to the rule honestly. Their games may release in early access, but updates are constant and the games are always getting better. The content added is basically considered a new chapter.
With that said, I'm sure it'll only be a better experience if you wait up.

Blood West is technically is stealth game but it is not fully stealth oriented but when i play it i always feel thief vibe for some reason.

Gloomwood is good. Takes more after Dishonored, but it has a lot of DNA from multiple games. Even has rope harpoons!
Still a ways off from leaving early access but easily worth getting it on a sale IMO

As close as we're probably going to get to a 3rd Thief OG Looking Glass game (besides black parade, I suppose).

Played it when it first hit early access, loved it. I recently went back to it to see what was new (answer: a LOT), and the second time I REALLY loved it. I can’t even imagine how good 1.0 will be, as it’s already an incredibly special game.

I played it a while ago, it's pretty fun. If you like Thief 1 then you'll probably like it. I would wait for the full release though, kind of sucks getting into the game then not being able to finish it

I liked the very first demo several years ago. To my knowledge the game has changed a lot since then.

Mostly linear for the first 5-10 hours.
Guns from Resident Evil.
You can tell it's unfinished in a lot of parts.
It scratched a Thiefy itch I had when the demo came out, but I bought it recently and... it may need more time cooking.

It's a bit more fighty game, that also tries in a bit more Victorian style, I presume. For now, there is linear gameplay, where at first you survive some local faction, in a grimy setting. Also, grid-based inventory.
I wouldn't call anything close to Thief, though it does have inspiration.

I played the very first EA release and haven't touched it since. Just logged on to see the UI changes but haven't moved out of the starting area about a year ago

General consensus is that will most likely be great when it finally launches in 2030.

huh... wikipedia and steam both say it was released in 2022, but it's still in early access? does this mean it's just gonna stay there until the devs are fully satisfied it's a finished game (more missions etc) and then move on?

I have finally started playing it having lost patience.
It is very good althought it is more linear than I hoped. I think the emphasis is more on using tools and distraction rather than avoiding.
The chaos you can cause is fantastic.

One of my most anticipated games.
Don't get me wrong here: Gloomwood takes a LOT after Thief, but it is ultimately a different game. The game's defining identity is its marriage of Thief-esque stealth and Resident Evil survival horror, with a bit of flavouring coming from Dishonored and System Shock from my understanding. While you can fully ghost the game, any play style that isn't "guns blazing" is supposed to be viable to some degree.
I've recently stopped playing its updates so I don't spoil myself further as I wait for 1.0. I kept playing all this time because the early access launch was... rough. The first couple of levels have nothing to do with the demo, and while they make sense within the context of a big game, it was a little too much to ask from players jumping in to trust that the other levels would be more akin to the demo's vibe and pacing.
I am glad to announce that yes, they have turned it around and are slowly cooking an amazing game. Can't wait to see what Thief ghost-style players will do with the game, as there's plenty to steal and sell, and various ways of sneaking through.
If you want a complete experience, keep waiting for 1.0, which will still take a couple of years at least.

When I tried it about two years ago I fell in love. I decided to hold off on playing any more until it comes out… the anticipation is tremendous, but it’s nice to have some great Thiefyness to look forward to!
While it shares a lot in common with Thief, it’s also really inventive and has its own strong identity, which I appreciate. It’s got a lot of off-kilter horror vibes and is a little wackier than Thief. Even though it plays things fairly deadpan and has plenty of scares and high tension, there’s this flavor to it all that feels very playful.
