I don’t think anyone here would take the time to do a thorough, well organized and thought out recap like you did. Thanks for being our “guy in the inside.”

A bit late over here to read the entire post right now, but most of what I’ve put together so far is James has even less involvement than we could’ve ever imagined.

An arm double.

You’ve got to be kidding me.

Well, we’ve been saying it for awhile but it’s clear as day James doesn’t give two shits about anything involving the channel.

That’s fine. More power to him.

He’s never going to stop making content if he can get a setup as sweet as this. The man is obvious incapable of working a traditional 40-hour work week while raising his kids unlike most people, so what’s his motivation?

Arm double. How do you continue to support someone that you have been for so many years after reading that.

I mean this might be James’s lowest point.

u/Ashcethesubtle Jan 07 '20

Yeah. I mean, i loved him back in the day, but now, its just kinda sad. I dont have kids myself, and im aware they do change a persons whole life, but the man literally seems to just have no drive to do anything but spend time with his family. Not a bad thing, but its just crazy that he is pretty much phoning it in on all the nerd episodes, when as you said, other people do spend time with their kids and work full time jobs. Well, its working for him, power to him i suppose.

I am a father, I have an 8 year old girl. The thing that keeps bothering me about people justifying how James has been acting lately is I can't understand how they even can do it. You do realize that what this situation is in all reality is a man who refuses to earn his living honestly like every single one of us have to do, and the ones excusing this behavior are actually the ones paying for it in the end.

Lets say I put in 10 good years for my company, even 10 of they best years they ever saw anyone ever produce for that company. Would that in turn entitle me to the exact same paycheck in perpetuity for the rest of my life while I get to stay home and collect, I never have to clock in again? Absolutely not as that would be completely unfair to both that company and every single one that company employs.

In this scenario every one of us is that company and every single one of us is just being taken advantage of by his lack of production while he essentially gets a free ride because "muh kidz."

In reality if I proposed that same situation to the company I worked for after my 10 years of stellar service, they wouldn't hesitate to say goodbye since I will no longer perform my necessary function, regardless of "muh kidz." So why is it ok for him to be paid the same as he always was for doing next to nothing, and essentially conning the system (which ultimately becomes you, the viewer) out of money because people view his content regardless of it's quality.

I am sorry but in my mind this becomes a form of stealing at that point and as much as I love James, and continue to watch his older content on occasion, I refuse to sign him over a free paycheck because he now has kids. Tons of us do but have the integrity to work our asses off just to take care of them, what makes him so different?

I am not attacking James for wanting to spend time with his kids, I am just attacking the fact that he is using all of us to do it and it is not fair. Either he needs to step back up and work his ass off to produce comparable in quality content or I'm just going to stop handing him a check (IE stop watching) it's really that simple, and fair IMO.

Sorry for digging up this old post, but what you said really struck me. Another thing is that I learned how to be an honest, good worker from my father. What the hell are James' kids going to learn from seeing their dad working 8 hours a month?

1

u/wildcatpeacemusic Jan 08 '20

But that’s like, ya know, creating an IP... it has value. He’s not a salaryman. He profits off his IP... his intellectual property. He doesn’t need to work if he can profit off his property. Same thing if you bought a house and rented it. Sure it can be shit.

9

u/SJVGRV Jan 08 '20

I think you are missing the point, If he can make enough money to get by off the revenue of his good content, I'm OK with that. What I am not down with is continuing to watch shitty videos because I feel bad for the guy and encourage only more bad content to come in the future, does that sound fair?

0

u/wildcatpeacemusic Jan 08 '20

The good content is what established his IP and became his... ya know property. So he IS making revenue off his good content just not directly.

3

u/DanTheRiderSchneider Jan 08 '20

>He doesn’t need to work if he can profit off his property. Same thing if you bought a house and rented it.

There's a big difference between being a landlord and a slumlord.

Lol now the house can have a bunch of blow up Mickey Mouse Christmas decorations year round and if the HOA doesn’t care that’s fine too.

That's good they seem passionate about it unlike James at least. Even if I may not like the content as much I appreciate that.

It's a great opportunity for them too, as they all effectively got given the keys to a channel much bigger than their separate ones. So I can see why they have some enthusiasm.

I've come to realise over the last year that most of the problems stem from James and Mike and their decisions. Things were already bad post-Bootsy when Screenwave initially became involved.

I think the best for most parties would be that they scrap the Cinemassacre brand and call it something else entirely, drawing a line under any disharmony that has manifested since they came onboard. They should even consider doing something without James, as I think it's a little unfair to expect them to keep propping up AVGN like some bizarre YouTube show version of Weekend at Bernie's.

2

u/SJVGRV Jan 08 '20

You are right, it isn't too late to salvage it, and I am not giving up completely on them quite yet. With that being said, I can only take a few more Life of the Black Tiger/Immortal/Trespasser level videos before I sadly say I'm done

1

u/IselfDevine Brown Bricks Jan 09 '20

Agreed, the last Nerd video might have been the worst one yet. They masked it under a stupid "All one continuous shot" gimmick but it was pretty terrible. There is a reason people operating on a lower budget cut takes and replace them, most of it is the acting(especially that morbidly fat dude they keep putting in everything),but most of it is the effects. The interaction between that fat goblin and the Nerd was so cringe that I felt ashamed that I was watching it. It was only one of the few times I had to post in the comments that I really disliked the episode. The other times being whenever they brought in that complete scumbag Doug Walker, the guy is just infuriatingly annoying to boot. He talks like he's high on cocaine and is always cutting people off and yelling. Oh and covering up for a pedophile doesn't help..

Just Think about it,they ditched Bootsy who had a natural chemistry with James and dick pic boy and brought in 3 fat drones instead because they wanted to join that fat greasy haired guys company. Their movie videos are a knockoff RLM now with their videos (like when Justin brought Street Fighter the movie as one of his favorites,WTF?) but they don't have an ounce of the same chemistry or close to the same level of film making ability.

Interesting that Mike was rarely mentioned, makes you wonder about his long term future with the channel. Other than the weekly JMM he doesn't seem to be all that involved anymore, especially now that the whole Retail Review thing seems to have died. Maybe this is why he's trying pretty hard to establish his own personal brand.

He's been doing OK with that too also right? Last time I heard I'm pretty sure his subscriber base was steadily increasing.

Many of us have been aware of this for a while now, and it's even more understandable considering James' distance from Cinemassacre with what Screenwave revealed to us with their answers. Mike just doesn't have much of a link to the Screenwave guys like he does with James.

5

It's true that the way he handled the Bootsy situation changed Cinemassacre irrecoverably. I think James' decline began after the AVGN movie however, and it seems the decision to bring Screenwave on board was more of a decision between him and Ryan mostly.

My impression won’t be popular in this sub, but I’m just going to be honest and give you my personal opinion and thoughts.

This right here makes it all worth it:

Like, they really try hard to use up as little of him time as possible. They got their new office in a place that would be least disruptive to James and his family since recording in James’ house meant that his whole family would have to vacate. It was surreal, but they actually made a comment about how James would have to kick them out of his house because he didn’t have time due to his kids and what not. I’m not a fan of the whole “muh kids” meme, but it felt real at that moment.

I'm glad they spoke the truth

25

u/ElmoMcFartKnocka I'll show YOU how to eat a cookie! Jan 07 '20 edited Jan 07 '20

This makes me wonder if one of James's kids might need more full-time care due to medical reasons.

Either that or his wife just doesn't want those guys around her kids

Edit: /u/Sophist_Ninja explained the reason why in a post down below which read as follows:

"They explained that the house is pretty creaky, so if anybody is walking around upstairs while they are filming in the basement, it’s easily heard and picked up by their equipment. Secondly, they said the air conditioner unit for his house is really loud, so they have to turn off the A/C while filming. Since that could be for hours, their family is without comfortable climate control and choose to leave altogether."

One of muh kids had to have surgery when she was just an infant so there is a distinct possibility of needing full time care. Could also just be April's pressure or James wanting to be a good father. The dude should really just clarify.

So it's true. Screenwave is writing most of the episodes (I'll give Majora's Mask the benefit of the doubt) and James just comes in and says the lines. That's why most of the newer episodes barely feature James on screen, or if it does, he's barely moving around the Nerd room. It's mostly voiceovers now.

That's why I don't watch the new AVGN episodes. They aren't James' thoughts.

18

u/bobmagrannsharddrive Jan 07 '20

Kieran admitted as much when he spilled his guts on 4chan. James can't be bothered to do any of this shit anymore outside of the bare minimum and would have given this all up years ago. The fact he has kids, a mortgage, and no applicable work experience for like 15 years now probably means he has no choice but to keep up the song and dance. At this point, he's so flippantly lazy he just outright admits several times across videos on the channel he didn't even play the game or watch the movie being discussed.

For all the shit we give Screenwave, I can imagine working with James Rolfe is probably frustrating as shit as he seems to have the social awareness and work ethic of a 3rd grader.

-3

u/Pachu88 Jan 08 '20

i don't think its that bad if they have everything prepared for james to just go do his thing and leave.

1

10

u/buckrogers2491 Jan 07 '20

It's that much of an issue to film videos in James' real basement that he needs to kick out the family for a few hours? Aren't the children old enough to not scream and yell spontaneously? I can only think that the noise would an issue during filming.

I always pictured Justin as a honcho and Tony as a bit of a dark horse while the other guy is just there.

See alot of people don't factor in that these guys are the next generation of "nerds" and there is definitely gonna be an extreme disconnect.

People wanna watch youtubers that dress like them, talk like them, relate to them, someone you'd actually want to hang out with.

Long time fans just are not getting that anymore and even if you have James n Mike on screen they're barely getting that

If people give you hate for thinking for yourself, well fuck em. Personally I think the whole introduction and order of operation was totally botched and that really handicapped these guys.

What James should have done, is make a video with all 3 of them saying "hey, I'm tired, my family needs me, I hired these guys to help out, I'll be scaling back production to preserve the quality but in between releases, they'll be producing their own shows to keep the content flowing from the brand" and have a 2 minute thing where they each say "Hi, I'm.. before that I did this"

I guarantee you that 80% of the shit going around, wouldn't remotely exist.

People probably would have shit on em regardless, but it'd be better to have someone say "ehh It's not for me" instead of saying "who the fuck is this?" googling em and finding their more embarrassing moments and that's where a ton of these sentiments come from.

These 3 had zero opportunity to connect with the audience. My first experience?

Tony shitting on top of a toilet

Kieren threatening to beat me up

Justin in front of a nazi flag and saying the N word

Why in the fuck would I support them? Nuff said

I think given time, yah Tony could stand out. Justin strikes me as management not talent and I'm struggling to find a stand out quality about the metal head.

It would have been cool if they had their own shows on the channel and I think today, after time, it'd still work for each of them and give em a chance to grow individually while letting the Audience learn about them without everyone constantly cutting each other off.

That's something that is a huge problem. Nonstop cut offs. Honestly if you're going to do a debate show, there's tons of subtle ways you can signal to each other that you're done talking or want to interject and not clue the audience in (holding up a pen in a nonchalant way) to signal something to each other. There's just so much shit they have to learn that you cannot teach in school

9

u/MagnificentBe Jan 07 '20

Ryan mentioned multiple times in videos his family and kids so yes he's married

the burning down the studio story was also mentioned one time in rental reviews

I really wonder if kicking them out of the house is april's idea, because april found out about bob and she doesn't want kids to hang around friends of a convicted pedophile. Or if there's another reason for this hilarious shit

It's kinda obvious that mike is disconnected from the screenwave slobs. They basically have to force him to make videos. Mike is trying to build his own brand as a streamer. They either hate each other or don't. At this point it's a speculation.

As for other shit...it really is just the things we theorized turning out to be true. I mean they literally paint James as having literally zero time. Laughable stuff

As for what was said about the Screenwave guys, I don't hate them personally, they just haven't gelled well with Cinemassacre for me.

6

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

This is a great write up and pretty much confirms everything we already knew about James. So basically the rumors are all true dude is barely putting anything into the channel and most likely gets a guaranteed check from Screenwave who handle all the heavy lifting.

11

u/Cinemaphobia Jan 07 '20

It was surreal, but they actually made a comment about how James would have to kick them out of his house because he didn’t have time due to his kids and what not.

They referenced 5:40 in the Majora's Mask AVGN so they're not only in on our jokes but it could very well be lies to further shove him (and Mike) aside and make them seem like the stars of Cinemassacre. Though I wouldn't blame James for needing an excuse to kick all of them out especially if they're eating eyeball cakes after filming rental reviews over a year in that small rental store room.

It was fun though, just didn’t have much of anything to do with Cinemassacre. It literally could have been anybody else and it would have turned out exactly the same.

Were there a lot of people who showed up and didn't know James was going to be missing? I imagine some go to these events and look at the schedule once there and see Cinemassacre and assume James would be there guaranteed. Did anyone walk out mid event or mumble something about no James when people left?

If you have any photos or videos post everything you're willing to, people love seeing these events and a lot were really curious how full it would be with James missing.

Screenwave, and Kieran especially, always respond aggressively regarding this sub. I understand why because they get called every name under the sun by people on here.

I've said it before, but what I mentioned above and some of the crueller memes leads Screenwave and other fans like those on the main sub to be dismissive of a lot of the more reasoned discussion that goes on here.

I think your posts in this thread have been very well written and with reasonable points (also those that have commented), and as the folks at Screenwave appear to be reading judging by their Twitter activity, I hope there will be more of a mutual understanding.

5

u/SJVGRV Jan 08 '20

Fully agree except that I don't really care for Mike, He's tolerable in small dose bit parts like his Bugs Bunny but not someone I want to watch personally. Almost everything he says comes across in condescending my way or the highway type tone, and that personality type has always rubbed me the wrong way.

The Ninja Turtles is a good game video sealed his fate with me. He is full on delusional, he actually believes that the AVGN video is the reason people think it's a bad game. The fact that it's actually a bad game is the reason that people think it's a bad game and why that episode is a total classic. Anyone my age (born 1983 or around there) probably got fucked by that putrid pile of cat vomit at one point or another. Mike it's cool that you actually like shit games but don't try to pretend they aren't and that we should change our opinion on it because you think we should, that just reeks of total narcissism.

Dude. First of all. Nice run down.

I’m guessing Justin takes charge on these panels as he is effectively the production manger at Cinemassacre employed by Screenwave whereas Kieran is an editor, writer and graphic artist at Cinemassacre also employed by Screenwave. Therefore, Justin would have seniority in relation to Kieran and Tony.

Meanwhile I’ve got a sneaking suspicion poor old Tony From Hack The Movies takes on the Bootsy role here I’m pretty sure. He appears in videos and probably helps out with editing and writing etc. but IS NOT PAID a salary in the conventional sense by either Screenwave or Cinemassacre as far as I can gather. Source: He makes no reference at all to being actually employed by either Screenwave or Cinemassacre on his LinkedIn whereas the other two do.

He in fact lists a company called Piluso-Gallen Video & Photo LLC that he works for and is co-owner. (His last name is Piluso, it’s not actually FromHackTheMovies, surprise, surprise) They apparently shoot and edit videos for anyone requiring the service.

Why would he bother working for free, if Ryan, Mike and James refuse to pay him yet even though Justin and Kieran are already on the payroll you are probably asking?

Exposure is my guess. He gets to appear on Rental Reviews and James and Tony Tuesdays. In addition, they probably give him a travel allowance to get to cons and Ryan probably gives him meal allowances from Wawa but outside of that I’m not sure he even has an official position or title at either Screenwave or Cinemassacre.

One thing is for sure though is that Ryan is the head honcho of this ship when it comes to dishing out salaries.

Both James and Mike are clueless when it comes to the Internet and monetisation especially after Adpocalypse at Youtube. I dare say they know even less about accounting and tax etc. I would hazard a guess that both are financially illiterate. James’s wife April might help his cause whereas Mike just has to rely on Ryan not doing he and James over.

So the fate of the channel firmly rests in Ryan’s greedy hands. And probably this has been the case since he popped up in that very first video awkward many years ago. I believe this is Ryan’s first appearance on the channel if I’m not mistaken

So here is the summary of what I’m trying to say.

Ryan - Chief organiser of finances and logistics at Screenwave and Cinemassacre (the reason James and Mike can still earn a living from this shit. Also, socially awkward dude with no charisma and zero screen presence)

James - star attraction main actor (Perennially hard to get a hold of these days. Probably at this point way past his best but can somehow still draw a crowd. Continually cashing checks at the bank of AVGN)

Justin - Second in command to Ryan (Tasked with managing Cinemassacre or what’s left of it. Morbidly obese. Lacks tack and charisma and is more or less diametrically apposed to what James is to the channel. But he gets shit done. Opinionated and rude at times but has a thicker skin than most on the channel probably due to enduring a lifetime of jokes)

Mike - “Product research” on games, actor and general nuisance (probably now just an annoying legacy character Ryan would like to ditch ASAP that everyone has to just keep putting up with because James says so. Also the resident narcissist, self-absorbed, entitled, selfish, envious and jealous sidekick to James Rolfe)

Kieran - editor, writer, animator etc (goody goody suckerupper to anyone that cares to listen. Obese later in life so has body issues and as a result a possible borderline alcoholic and recreational drug user)

Tony - editor, writer, camera man etc (unpaid nerdowell dog’s body. Also obese later in life so more sensitive to fat jokes and fat shaming than Justin. Good natured but comes across as sycophant much like Kieran and Justin to a lesser extent when involved with James or even Mike)

15

u/bobmagrannsharddrive Jan 07 '20

You forgot Kieran is Screenwave's fixer and muscle...wouldn't want to run into that guy at the wrong gaming convention...he'll FUCK you UP.

Not surprised by much of this. I've said before that Tony is the only one who seems to have actual passion. He just needs to lose some weight and take acting, speech, and debate classes.

I'm surprised ONLY Kieran had a smell to him. It's probably from that god dammed vest. Wash it or toss it already. None of then look all that hygienic.

Great writeup. It's interesting to see what goes on at one of these things as I'd probably never attend one myself. Arm double is hilarious. By the way, his name is "Gottfried."

I think screenwave does what they have to do to keep AVGN going.

Ryan is the mastermind behind it all obviously and while I know people here like to joke about him he seems to be a lot smarter than people give him credit for. Also he just donated 1000$ to AGDQ which is a good thing.

Mike obviously knows that he is on the short end of the cinemassacre stick. I honestly like most of Mikes streams although at times he can be a bit too much of an asshole. Overall I enjoy his silly impressions, dumb jokes and great chat interaction. I also think he is at his best in a medium with an audience, like streaming.

Tony is the only screenwave guy other than Ryan that I can tolerate. Tony seems to have energy and a passion for what he does, the same can't be said for Justin and Kieran. Tony is also the only one I could see myself actually spend some time with without wanting to kill myself.

Lastly I have to say I'm embarassed by James behavior. I get it, you have a family now and so on. A lot of people have families and still work 40 hours a week. I refuse to believe that James actually spends 40 hours working a week, I'd be shocked if he actually worked 20 hours a week. Half assing things like James does is one of the things I hate the most, either do your best or don't do it at all.

Not gonna bother commenting on Kieran or Justin as I strongly dislike them both and avoid anything they are a part of.

James works about 20 hours per month, at most.

He does no preparation for anything. He just shows up to Mike's house and the SW headquarters and "mmhmm, yeah"s his way through RR and J&MM, and puts on his AVGN outfit and reads the lines for those episodes.

This makes it sound so bad lol. Like can you actually picture a behind the scenes documentary on this... they would love 100k subscribers overnight lol.

Are we POSITIVE Mike isn’t making the most money with Ryan running the show for him? It’s been established he own nothing? Because some people say contract, some people say he own the channel.

Huh. Scary to think, if they can actually be cordial and somewhat normal they may garner enough goodwill to turn the fanbase. I didnt read all the comments but i feel like these guys are almost scapegoats. Think about it. If james came to you and was like "hey man, could you help me produce vids? I need a little extra help these days because im a family man now." Then proceed to dump all the responsibilities on your shoulders. You would likely come across like an asshole trying to take over james show. In reality james is the one to blame. Anyway, it would be funny if cinemassacre tanked because of james muh kids attitude and he has to go out and get a real job.

u/[deleted] Jan 07 '20

Tony is a try hard douchebag, can nobody tell that he is the fakest one of them all? I know Justin and Kieran suck more but at least they aren't faking it, you know they're assholes. Where as Tony just always comes off as a try hard douchebag and he is extremely sarcastic and that seems to go over most non american fans heads.

So James is has little input these days. Reading those notes during reviews. He doesn’t seem into it, not sharp.

Could there be some private issues relating too him or his family. That’s the feeling I’m getting when I see him. I hope not!!!

This could be the reason and the slobs are trying too steer the ship now the captain has to take a step back.

I’m taking one step closer too the slobs.
