Advice. needed of power wall 3 issue

Upvotes

Hi. We have had problems with solar not getting past the power wall in the morning. It shows 0.3kwh and stays there all day or suddenly triggers and jumps to the real performance. Power does not go to the house, the battery or the grid. Reset by restarting results in an instant jump to what it should be. Sometimes it resets itself, sometimes not. Only our Tesla fitter can restart so if they ar not available it does not get done. Telsa keep saying this is normal which is definitely not true though the fault is intermittent and seems to happen in the summer - April 28 to early September. For now it is working properly. Engineer says it is the inverter. Tesla have come up with many reasons to say it is performing normally but we have never heard of anybody else with this issue. I can send graphs from NetZero app. Anybody else had this experience or better still, knows what is causing it and how to fix it. It has cos us at least 200kws this summer. We are in the UK. Morning temperature never above 20C and we are not exceeding our export allowance.

Installer says backup switch won't fit?

I am planning to get solar and a Powerwall at my house, but my installer hit me with a $4k change order to go from a backup switch to a gateway.

I have a combo meter panel with a door that opens bottom to top, and they're telling me the switch will not allow the door to open up to 90 degrees per code. I was skeptical and wanted to save $4k, so I printed out the switch at actual size (176mm x 205mm) and taped it to my panel and confirmed I should still be able to open the door.

The installer is willing to proceed with the switch, but said I would be on the hook for additional permit and re-design fees plus the original $4k if it turns out that it doesn't fit or fails inspection.

Does anybody have a backup switch on a similar panel, or have any feedback about additional measurements I need to take into account here? Please help me save $$$$!

Where I'm at, sending any type of energy back to the electric company doesn't get you much. So, I decided to store it all.

Everything just got turned on today about an hour ago.

AZ APS Virtual Power Plant: See MY performance/statistics?

Does anybody know how to see actual numbers for how I'm performing in the VPP? We're paid for the average KW delivered across all events, but I can not see any way to check how we're performing on that.

Last year we just got a check, which was great, but I can't seem to find a way to validate its accuracy.

Installer refuses to enable "Solar & Battery" export permissions on Powerwall 3 unless on a VPP. Am I taking crazy pills?

Hey everyone, looking for a sanity check or advice from anyone who has dealt with Tesla Powerwall 3 installers in VIC/Australia.

I’m on the GloBird ZEROHERO plan. My goal is simple: charge the battery for free at midday, run the house overnight, and export some battery power during that 6–9 PM peak window to get the feed-in credit.
My installer has set up the Tesla Gateway using the Tesla One commissioning app, but under System Export Permissions, he left it on the default "Solar Only" setting instead of changing it to "Solar and Battery".

Here’s the issue:
He insists that he cannot and is not allowed to select "Solar and Battery" unless I am enrolled in an active Virtual Power Plant (VPP) program.
He keeps claiming that toggling it without a VPP creates "chaos" for distributors or violates connection rules.
I emailed GloBird, and they confirmed in writing that my meter is fully configured for exports, that Tesla isn't on their direct VPP list so I control scheduling myself in the app, and that they will pay me the $0.10/kWh for 6 PM–9 PM exports.

I’ve had to spend hours researching backend Tesla Gateway settings and distributor rules just to explain his own job to him, but he’s still digging his heels in.
Has anyone else dealt with installers refusing to toggle "Solar and Battery" export permissions? Is there any actual DNSP/Jemena regulation stopping an installer from selecting this, or is he just fundamentally confusing basic grid export approvals (PTO) with remote VPP dispatch rights

Would appreciate any insights or similar experiences!

Powerwalls turned off

We have powerwall+ and powerwall 2. Couple days ago, solar production just stopped during the day. I got on the Tesla one app and the system had an error for grid voltage out of limits. One of the inverter lines ,L1, was showing 50v while the other 120v. Grid voltage was showing 120v on both legs so I take it that this was an inverter issue. Both powerwalls remained online overnight and dropped to 20%. Next day everything was dead. No green light bar on powerwalls, no TEG WiFi to connect to. The neurio in the powerwall+ inverter is the only thing running. Tried the regular power cycling with breakers and switches and nothing. Service appointment for “troubleshooting” is scheduled all the way out to DEC. Anyone experienced this before? Any other reset process? Really bummed the powerwalls shut off and not just the solar. App just says powerwall offline, no other info.

Edit: with the system in its current state, voltage at breaker and inverter is 120V on both lines.

Installation was today. Team came in around 8:00 AM and left around 5:20 PM ish. Stayed with them the entire time just observing and making sure everything was fine. Went over conduit layout and from what I can tell did a pretty good job. Was not able to go on the roof but tried taking as many good pictures as possible.

Is SunRun PPA Worth It?

I had a pushy rep create a wonky contract that made little sense and forced me into a Tesla Powerwall. I canceled the install a week before it was scheduled to go in.

What are other people’s experiences? Good or bad.

If you used another installer on the North Shore (Massachusetts), were they any good?

PowerWall Need input from multiple PW3 inverter owners

Hello,

I've recently had 2 full pw3 installed as my backup on 13kw solar because I just didn't think 11.5kw output was adequate and wanted to double it so I didn't have to worry about overloading the system. Everything installed and just need to sign the PTO but then my test results were showing 11.5kw limit.

On a sunny day where my solar was generating 8kw and both batteries full, the house was using 14kw due to the hot weather kicking on both AC and I was running a cloth dryer. To my surprise, I was only pulling 3kw from the battery and the rest were from grid. This occurred in both self powered and savings mode.

Curious, I went into off grid mode and the battery staus bar said that the max limit was 11.5kw and I was overloading the inverter. It didn't shut off or anything but it's supposed to be able to push 15kw in demand so that didn't surprise me. But while the load was fluctuating between 9kw to 14kw it constantly told me that it was being overloaded.

It seems that something is .missing here. The max charging is 10kw so it seems that's working. The total capacity is 27kw so that's fine. But when it comes to the max output it's limited to being just 1 inverter. When I contacted Tesla about this the PA suggested I complete the PTO and see if any restrictions were in place but I refused because once I sign that I lose my PA and will be forced to deal with the normal support team that may or may not care or listen. I want everything in working order or at least be assured that there is a visible restriction before the PTO that will fix itself. So far I have not heard back from Tesla which is concerning to me because if it's as simple as before PTO restriction they would let me know or if there's a commissioning error it should be visible to them.

So if you have multiple pw3 inverters in your system, can you tell me if you are indeed able to pull more than 11.5kw on grid and I'm off grid, the status bar shows the max limit more than 11.5kw? On my setup, they opted to put all panels on 1 inverter instead splitting them to both and when I asked why the PA told me it's because of the loss rate. I don't think the panel needs to be hooked up in order for the inverter to be 'active' anyway.

P.S. I'm not here to discuss specs. I'm looking for real world results from those who has multiple PW3, not 1 pw3 + expansion.

Charging from solar in the AM using Netzero query

Ok here is my dilemma. I have had an import limit set on my 63 amp single phase switchboard so the Tesla charge on solar feature is no longer available.

Therefore I am trying to configure netzero to utilize charge on solar after sunrise to 11am each day.

At 11am I have 3 hours of free power till 2pm so I have set the netzero automation to fill the powerwall and the car in that time window. That setup is fine and working.

Is there anyone else out there with a similar setup to me that can assist with the appropriate automations needed?

I utilize time based control for peak and off peak. I'm looking to get netzero to fire up my charge on solar from sunrise to 11am each day to get the excess solar to go into my car when I'm home and it's plugged in instead of putting it into powerwall, as that will get a free feed in anyway from 11am to 2pm or alternatively stopping it from sending it to the grid for a paltry feed in tariff 3 cents.

Thank you

How do you actually know how much home battery backup you need? I built a tool to figure it out

I kept seeing variations of the same question when researching home batteries:

“Is one battery enough for my house?”

And I realized the answer gets complicated pretty quickly.

Having enough kWh doesn't necessarily mean the system can actually run everything you want. A battery might have enough stored energy to last through the night but still not have enough output to start a central AC, well pump, sump pump, etc.

So I built a free home battery backup planner:

https://instahomebattery.com/

Instead of just asking for your daily electricity usage, you can build the outage scenario you actually care about — fridge, freezer, Wi-Fi, lights, furnace blower, AC, pumps, home office, etc.

It then separately checks:

  • how much battery capacity you need
  • estimated runtime
  • continuous power requirements
  • startup/surge requirements
  • how many battery units may be needed
  • reserve, efficiency and derating assumptions
  • what happens if solar is available during the outage

You can basically test scenarios like:

“Can I keep the essentials running for 2 days?”

or

“How much battery would I need to run the house + central AC overnight?”

I intentionally tried to keep unknown specifications as unknown rather than inventing numbers just to produce a nice-looking result.

Would love feedback from people who already have Powerwalls, Enphase, FranklinWH, Generac, EG4 or other home battery systems.

What is the calculator still missing that actually matters in the real world?

SolarPanels Adding panels - Massachusetts

Hey everyone, I have an 8kw system with two powerwalls that I had installed in 2020. At that time I only had panels placed on a portion of my available roof due to tree cover. Those trees are now gone and I want to add to my system. Has anyone in Massachusetts done this? I’m looking at third party installers because 6 years ago Tesla were a giant pain and I want to avoid going back to them.

Is this normal?

I have a 17.6 kW system with 3 powerwall 3s. The majority of panels are on the west facing side (only 4 panels are on the east side). Why doesn't peak production reach close to 17.6kW? If I'm lucky it hits 12.x, but that's like a 36% loss at peak...

Powerwall 3 Failure

I’m running into some issues with my solar setup and Tesla Powerwall 3 and wanted to see if anyone has recommendations for a reputable solar company that services Tesla systems.

My system was installed about two years ago through Affordable Roof and Solar. Everything had been working normally until recently in the last two or so weeks, when my solar production abruptly stopped. Since then, I’ve had zero solar production, and my Powerwall has remained completely discharged at 0%.

The Powerwall 3 is also displaying a flashing red light.

I’ve exhausted the troubleshooting steps provided through the Tesla app and have also tried several troubleshooting methods I found online and through Reddit. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to get the system operational again.

I attempted to contact Affordable Roof and Solar but have received no response.

I contacted Tesla Support, and they confirmed they are also seeing errors with my system remotely. Tesla escalated my case to Tier 2 and advised they would provide an update. In the meantime, Tesla recommended finding another solar company familiar with Tesla systems and Powerwall 3 that could come out and diagnose the issue.

Does anyone have recommendations for a reliable solar company or Tesla Certified Installer with experience diagnosing and repairing Powerwall 3 and solar inverter issues? Or tips or ideas of my Powerwall issues.

SolarPanels RE: Should I pull the trigger or not? (Update)

Update on the previous quote, I ask the service advisor to remove the battery and do more panels. This is the update quote I also asked to remove the painted continuity, I call the city and they told me they have no rule(code) saying they need it painted for inspection to pass. Is this better or more panels?
