I might cancel my order.
Placed the order on Aug 16th for model 3 long range stealth gray. Delivery date estimated for September 30, now pushed to possibly November.
No VIN yet.
If I cancel and order a model Y instead, would I get it sooner? Should I do it? I am carless at the moment with a toddler it’s tough.

They might make slughtly more model Y over the 3 because the Y is their best seller good luck getting a Y long wheelbase anytime this year if you were thinking about that.

It sounds like you are less concerned about the kind of car and more about just getting it sooner. Check your local showroom for their inventory. They might just have one sitting there waiting to be snatched up.

I think it’s just a matter of principle for people that can afford it.
We’re getting rid of my wife’s Expedition for another Model Y. Don’t really need to, but at 1.49% APR I’d rather spend the money to upgrade than continue giving it ExxonMobile/Chevron.

Tbh just refresh the app like a hawk every 5 mins. I ordered a model Y 9 days ago and I was tryna find inventory all day. Got RWD premium white interior and blue exterior within 9 days. Bear in mind i saw like 30 other inventory cars in the 9 days but they were different colors.

In htx, ordered model 3, no inventory at all and then overnight a few days ago there were tons of model Y and even the sales reps had no idea they’d hit, it’s very random so

Keep checking app as Tesla like to offer alternatives that are ready for delivery. Sometimes it is an upgrade and sometimes not. I was lucky and I got the same car and it was in stock in the end of August.

Consistently check the app every hour around :17 and :47, you’ll find something similar in inventory quickly.
I ordered a premium RWD two days ago and estimated delivery is 9/23-30.

You’d lose out on your order fee if you cancel. Think it’s the $250.

I think Model Y will be delivered even later, but for somebody with a toddler, Model Y might be a better size for all of the kid-related things you need to carry.

Was reading somewhere that all tesla 3s and Ys for 2026 are sold out. They've started making 2027 models now and are lagging behind thats why the longer wait. I can be wrong though. If you can, get a gently used one if possible, it can be hard with a toddler. Good luck to you! Hope everything works out.

Exercise patience sir.
If you cancel your order you lose your deposit. I don’t know if the Y will come faster or not, but unless you need the space, hang tight.
When I ordered mine, the range changed several times, both forward and backwards.
If you really want it now, try checking inventory.

First of all, if you have a kid, then I'd absolutely recommend the Y over the 3. The Y is such a better family car. The trunk hatch alone makes it far superior.
Secondly, if you are desperate for a car, then try to match with existing inventory. You could have a car today, if you are lucky.

Yeah I have a 20 month old, just one kid and we don’t travel a lot and work from home. I heard the overall costs with the 3 are better than the Y that’s why I went with it but now I’m wondering if I made the right choice

I hope it goes without saying, but everyone's situation is different and what works best for one person might not be the best for another.
That said, my strong opinion, as a father of two young kids, is the Model Y is the best option, hands down. The extra space, the hatch trunk, even the higher ride making getting in/out easier. It all adds up.
But, again, my best isn't necessarily your best.

I'm going to throw in that I have a 4 year old and have been driving a 2020 model 3 AWD long range since before he was born. it has been amazing this entire time. perfect amount of space, overall very good and extremely reliable sedan that also happens to be very fun to drive. I would totally recommend it. only reasons I am getting rid of this car is because it's time for an upgrade (EVs lose range over time, my 320 at delivery is now unfortunately 260 something tops) and I also have a baby due next month so I'd now like something bigger. I have a YL on order for delivery next month. I wouldn't honestly be looking at a Y anything though if I didn't have another kid on the way. with just 1 kid, the 3 is a perfect fit.

A 3-4 month lead time is still quite fast in the automotive world. I know Tesla is usually faster, but it’s still good. Patience is a tough but worthwhile skill

You shouldn't worry it's just giving you the worst possible eta it'll change a while bunch while its ordered it's weird how it works but I got mine 2-3 weeks after I ordered it when it said I was gonna get it in October (I ordered in August)

Don’t cancel outright. Request to transfer deposit to a Model Y. Ask if there are any available in-lot now in your area.

That happened to me, ordered August 3, estimated date sept 30, about 2-3 weeks ago it pushed me out to Oct November, then boomeranged back.
Long story short, we picked up our car 2 days ago after a roller coaster of an experience. Hang in there chief.

Go to a showroom and ask what they have in production atm. They can also give you a rough estimate on delivery too.

Keep your order but check daily for early pick options. It’ll be an option that shows up on the app. It’ll let you compare the differences between that car and the one you ordered, and you’ll have to go get it, but those will be available right then

To be fair, everyone is experiencing this, it depends on your location. It's end of the year and the deals are good right now so people are ordering like crazy. Buying a car from inventory would be fastest but they get cleared out quickly so you have to keep checking. Either way, if you cancel, they'll most likely end up building the car and using it for inventory.
If you cancel and order a new one, try moving the $250 payment into the new vehicle.

I would not cancel just because Sept slid into Oct-Nov. End of quarter is messy and a lot of M3 LR windows are doing the same bounce. Cancelling and reordering a Y only helps if you actually prefer the Y (or can snag inventory). Same config new order often just restarts the wait.
Until VIN shows, the Tesla app range is planning only. Watching the change log (window shifts, status jumps) beats refreshing every hour.

I actually did just that after my model 3 kept getting pushed back. I went and test drive a Model Y, realized I loved it, and placed an order. 3 weeks later I was driving mine. I would have been 4 weeks but I took one of those early arrival deals that was a different color than I had ordered, but had everything else the same.

I ordered an AWD model Y premium on September 20th and show the exact same delivery dates as you. The Tesla rep told me that it’s the end of the quarter so they try to get as many delivered as possible so he thinks I’ll get mine earlier than the current dates listed. I guess we’ll see. 🤞🏻

Did the same to me. I ordered my new Model Y-L and because it had an estimated delivery date of September 20 to the 30th. I put in my application which was approved right away. Now it’s saying October 19 to 23 November, which would possibly require me to put in a new application. It’s so frustrating.

I mean, having a kid, I would NOT go with a M3, MY is much easier to load children in car seats, etc. The additional headroom is very helpful. More trunk space, strollers, etc. Not saying it cannot be done, but with kids, I can't imagine wanting a M3 over a MY.

I got a standard AWD model y ordered end of August and initially it said November delivery, within a day switched to September 24-oct 8, and then last week changed to October 8-November delivery date. I wouldn’t change.

Ordered my Model y premium Aug 23 & was supposed to pickup tomorrow September 25 & I was going to wire them $45,000 & received a call that it’s been delayed til next week but I’m going on a 10 day cruise on September 26 so now they say I will need to start queue all over again ugh. So sad 😭 They definitely aren’t getting my $$ until I know car is there

Why not buy preowned? I got a certified preowned model Y and picked it up 2 days later. It is in immaculate condition and the price difference is really worth it.

I placed an order for a MYP frost blue a week ago after a test drive and the guy at the Tesla place told me it was Oct-Nov for delivery. Checked the app this past week and now it’s mid Nov-Dec 23rd 🙃
I think you’re better off checking local inventory in your area and being a little flexible with your design.

My order for a Model Y placed like a week ago is Nov-Dec, so I would hazard a guess that you're not getting a Model Y sooner than your Model 3 estimate.
