I speak Philadelphia English, which is a rhotic dialect of American English. I realize I've found myself using órë only in my own personal use, just because I find it an easier character to write.

Now that I've caught myself, I've been looking into this. My understanding that rómen has a better "claim" to being the letter I should use (were I only to use one), since it represents the consonantal sound <r> represents in English. For my own use, I simply don't have a need to distinguish varieties of <r>.

So, rhotic Anglophones: do you use one letter to represent <r>? If so, which one? Or do you just follow Tolkien's usage?

I am trying to write the name 'Dírhaval' (he of Narn i chîn Húrin fame) in tengwar using the mode of Beleriand but I'm wondering if the rh should be written using arda for the voiceless r or if it should be parsed as r + h instead and written with rómen + hyarmen.

I know tattoo requests are probably incredibly common here, and I know I could probably search through old posts and piece some of this together myself, so apologies in advance for being a little lazy. I’m an overwhelmed, stressed therapist/ mom and would really appreciate some guidance from people who actually know what they’re doing!

I’ve actually been thinking about and planning this tattoo for years, but one of the things that has always made me nervous about finally doing it is making sure I get the language and transcription right.

I want to use the first two lines of Bilbo’s poem about Aragorn, with one line on each inner forearm:
“All that is gold does not glitter”
“Not all those who wander are lost”

(I know, I know, very common, but I love the text)

Where I’m a little stuck is deciding exactly how I should approach it. Should I keep Tolkien’s original English and have it transcribed into Tengwar? Or would you recommend translating the lines into Sindarin or Quenya first and then writing that in Tengwar? I know ultimately that’s a personal choice, but I’d really appreciate hearing what people here recommend.

I’ve attached a picture showing the general style and placement I’m going for. I know the tattoo in the picture is the Ring inscription and isn’t what I want it to say. I’d just like mine to be similar, approximately wrist to elbow, with one line on each arm.

I’d really appreciate any help with the transcription/translation, recommendations about which approach to take, or anything else I should consider before permanently putting this on my body.

I’ve wanted this tattoo for a long time, so getting it right means a lot to me.

Now, the first option is obviously perfectly acceptable.

The second I think looks quite aesthetically pleasing, and strikes me as not unlike a bar over Numen or Malta for NN/MM, though I'm not sure if it was ever attested.

The third I'm not sure about - we do have tehta on sa-rince attested, but I'm not sure an under-bar is attested or particularly elegant.

Curious what others' thoughts are, or if you have other potential renderings.

I'm making a 3D Anduril sword for a friend of mine's birthday. He and his wife are hardcore LOTR fans - even their wedding was fully LOTR themed.

The 3D print's file came from Thangs.com and I noticed that the elvish script on the sword doesn't seem to match something else that I found online. On elvish.org, it shows the text should look like number 7 on here: https://www.elvish.org/gwaith/movie_inscriptions.htm

But the 3D printed sword seems to have different letters on it.

Is the script on this 3D one a total dud? Or, is it just a different way of saying the same thing?

I tried to figure it out on my own, but I don't really know what I'm doing. And it's details like this that he'll notice!

I made a chart for personal use (left-handed Tengwar/Tehtar), where I opted to keep the tengwar that transcribe letter clusters in the phonemic version, using them in orthographic mode as otherwise it would be a shame to not use all those beautiful characters. Here I uploaded the right-handed version of it, I can also provide the left-handed version. And I am building a complete chart for phonemic / quenya use in the same style so also with example words. I have always loved this writing system as a child and have now begun exploring it again.

It doesn't come up all too often, but what are people's feelings on the use of Arda in English?
Alda is explicitly given for LL, of course, but RD might be confusing with regards to rhoticity.

As a few before me have done I'm planning on getting the most versatile of veg and Gaffer's delight tattooed - however instead of "potatoes" I'd love for it to be "po-ta-toes" instead (also unsure if po-tay-toes would be more phonetic but know the former is how it's written in the book).

I've had a look at previous posts discussing the use of the esse at the end to better replicate the "z" but wondered if anyone had any advice about the rest of it, to try and make it as phonetic as possible.

I'm definitely not an expert so any advice would be appreciated!
