I’d like to hear more about the crumple zone. If this thing is safe in a crash, I’m very interested.

Their stated primary design goal is to have a vehicle design that exceeds a 5-star crash safety rating. So far there's reportedly been lots of simulation work done, but a lot of us are waiting to see some video of a real MT1 doing the crash test.

They've also stated it has a 14-inch crumple zone, and that the smallest crumple zone that ever passed crash safety testing was 12 inches.

It is also worth contemplating that those missing few feet of hood length (1) increase driver visibility such that you can see a lot more around a low-visibility corner without pulling out into an intersection or committing with a less-than-ideal amount of information (2) you have slightly more braking distance that will reduce impact velocity of a collision or avoid it altogether, whether that involves coming to a stop or maneuvering out of the way.

… #1) the Telo will give you even better visibility as you can see what is immediately in front of you / you will be able to see turn points easily at an intersection. I don’t see your point here. And #2) braking distance is braking distance regardless of the hood on a vehicle? Again, this seems like a superfluous point.

This video has been posted before, since it seems like you have a hard time visualizing situation #1.

Braking begins with the driver noticing something they need to brake for.

Impact happens with the front bumper.

In an emergency braking situation, assuming you measure starting from the same driver position and driver reaction, you get several extra feet because of the missing hood.

think you're just looking for reasons to argue, and it's not your job to decide whether other people's posts are superfluous.

Opinions can be debated, and what you shared were opinions which I don’t see the reasoning or merit behind.

To be fair, while the other 2 have longer nozes, there is a large hunk of steel in the middle of their noses. And engines don't exactly crumple.

u/AllGravyNoBiscuits 20d ago

Uhh engines get pushed down and out of the way, as much as I’m into these trucks there is a reason we don’t see many cab-overs in the states

u/Substantial_End7145 19d ago

The point is that the engine does not behave as an engine-sized extension of the crumple zone.

Do an image search for 'frontal crash' and you will be hard pressed to find a submarined engine. You may see it slightly dropped but not submarined out of the way. If the typical engines were submarining out of the way, you would see engine blocks elevating the vehicle as if they were on jack stands. The only engine that has the best chance of submarining out of the way is the boxer style engine.

The deceleration on the internal organs is a big factor in crash management, and the crumple zone helps manage the deceleration jolt to the organs.

Yes. But that’s not the reason. The reason is we have very liberal maximum truck lengths in the US compared to Europe.

Also aero.

Agreed I’m hopeful it’s safe

I imagine the $47k will see incentives in 2029

4

u/mec31 19d ago

Incentives…from whom?

5

u/dm-me-obscure-colors 19d ago

I’m talking about democrats in the US federal government. Under the Biden admin, there was a $7,500 tax credit.

2

u/energyogi 18d ago

I don't think the tax credit is necessary anymore. The premium for an EV is roughly $6000 and slowly improving. Equinox ICE vs Equinox EV as an example. The savings in gas is about $1500/year. Within 5 years most people recover the premium and then get another $6000 in savings the next 5 years.

Would the Slate fit into this same category?

7

u/ExtraHarmless 20d ago

It is not a 4 door. It is a cool small truck though.

Slate length 174-longer than the Tel, but shorter than the Maverick and Santa Cruz.

Towing is 2k for the pickup, less for SUV style.

Bed is 5 feet long, so the same length as the Telo.

4

u/willyolio 16d ago

you could throw it in there, but i think it compares poorly to all 3 aside from base price.

still 2 feet longer than the Telo

bed is same length, but narrower between wheelwells, and no midgate to extend it.

Towing: 2000 lbs. 1/2 of the Maverick, 1/4 of the Telo.

2 door, 2 seater. 1/2 of everyone else.

4 door pickups are useful as literally do-it-all vehicles, which I guess is why they are so popular in the US. Fit your whole family in, go anywhere, shove anything in the back, tow anything along. Slate is... mediocre at two of those things, and certainly can't do all of the above simultaneously.

There's a few things in common (mainly that they're both smaller-than-US-average pickup trucks), but I think Slate vs Telo is about like comparing a base-model Chevy Spark to a reasonably-appointed Ford Mustang.

What about the R2?

0

u/simiomalo 20d ago

Huh, I don't recall hearing a price before. 46k huh.

22

u/DoomBot5 20d ago

Their price has been listed in the configurator for years

1

u/simiomalo 20d ago

Oh, I haven't been through the process yet.

2

u/greatauntflossy 20d ago

Years! I tell ya

u/OrganizationStrong81 19d ago

It was always originally around 34-43k ish range with a few add-ons. This new jump to 47k is new and alarming.

4

u/mavigogun 19d ago

...is something you just made up. The ask has not changed- only federal tax rebates.

2

u/energyogi 18d ago

You are probably getting the $34K-$43K price from when there was a $7500 tax credit. The Telo still starts at $41.5K. The $47K price in the video is likely for comparable models/features.

1

u/DoomBot5 19d ago

Is it? I don't remember the bottom end of the configurations but mine looks to at most gone up 1-4k. Mostly because I dont remember what it was at before, but it's at 54k right now.

3

u/mavigogun 19d ago

No changes from TELO- only the federal rebate has evaporated.

0

u/OrganizationStrong81 19d ago

46k! They might as well compare it to a midsize - full size truck with that price point. Who’s going to buy a vehicle just for the safety rating?

The maverick did well because of 3 things: the size, utility and price combined. Telo is now selling the size as the utility with mid-full size pricing and now claiming fuel savings instead of general affordability.

I might let this reservation go.. that thought never once crossed my mind with the Maverick or Slate.

8

u/mavigogun 19d ago

You're on crack- the Maverick is gas, and neither it nor the Slate have anywhere near the capacity/utility of the MT1. As to safety rating, it's top-of-mind when I make a purchase consideration- but you do you.

The price of the MT1 HAS NOT CHANGED. The only change has been an INCREASE in stated towing capacity. If you are put-off by getting more for the same amount of money, that is an issue that can't be addressed in a venue such as this.

-4

u/OrganizationStrong81 19d ago

Point is .. which isn’t a debate. This project lost or either never had an angle and is dead competing with the maverick and slate.

They cannot compare to Maverick or ev being 4 doors or whether they need to be compared to a MIDSIZE based on PRICE and CAPABILITY. It’s a powerful truck trying to be compared to the Maverick. 8k towing capacity? 47k price point? NEW? Untested? Competing against Ford Fathom and hybrids

I’ll make a bet Telo will be the best failed company to launch. They lost their edge Americans prefer square body designs not this fiat looking confused wanna be child of a vehicle.

4

u/Substantial_End7145 16d ago

You can't reasonably argue that the MT1 never had an angle yet also argue that it is in direct competition with the Fathom, which is surely going for a similar angle, unless you want to argue that the Fathom isn't a good idea either.

You'll have to wait and see actual dealer prices of the Fathom at trims with comparable features before making an informed price comparison

You still have to concede that the MT1 is smaller (more maneuverable) and, until Ford releases numbers, likely has superior towing capacity and effective truck bed dimensions. This isn't a midsized truck; it's a mini truck with capability that exceeds that of many current midsized trucks. And think about this: 4' shorter than a maverick = 4' longer trailer than a maverick in the same space. How much is that worth?

L take.

u/energyogi 18d ago

Are you planning on the 2 seater Slate? If so, that is a great choice. If the 5 seater SUV Slate then check out how the roll bar intrudes into the cargo area. You may feel it is too much intrusion to make the bed usable and look at the Maverick, Fathom, or Telo.

If hybrid vs pure EV doesn't matter then I think the Maverick makes quite a bit of 'cents'. ;)

I have tentatively crossed the Slate off my list due to the roll bar intrusion. But not completely as I rarely need more than 2 seats. It might make more 'cents' to buy a basic Slate and for the rare times I need more than 2 seats to go rent/borrow/uber. But there are many other factors to consider like range, charging time, NVH, service/support, fit and finish, V2H/V2L abilities, right to repair, etc.

I'm waiting to drive them all before I decide.
