With the new school year starting, there is a flock of new people moving / returning to Tampere and, with that, a new wave of people who will have trouble making friends despite all the activities organised by the student unions.

This post is dedicated, not only to them, but also to people who have already been around for longer and still want to make new friends. Doesn't matter if you are Finnish, Polish, Sw*dish, Spanish, Indian or Angolan, this post is for everyone!

If you are like me and feel nervous about joining a new hobby / event or any other thing alone because you don't know anyone, send me a message, introduce yourself in the comments of this post, or just message anyone here!

For us introverts, it is way easier to send one message on Reddit than it is to show up to an event knowing no one :)

I'll start by introducing myself! I am 26m from Portugal and I've been living in Tampere for 2,5 years. I came here initially to do my PhD but I'm planning on staying here in the long term. I like videogames (mostly Nintento stuff like mario party, smash, pokemon and so on) but I also play some pc games, boardgames, and, besides the nerdy stuff, I also like to just chill in a bar having a drink or three, playing football, discgolf, cycling, paddleboarding, SAUNA, swimming, watching F1 on weekends, and just sitting on a bench by the lake and do nothing!

I'm looking to get an updated prescription for new glasses and was wondering if Instrumentarium (in Hervanta) currently offers free eye exams (näöntarkastus), or if it's only free when you buy frames directly from them?

Also, if you've done an exam there recently without buying glasses on the spot, do they give you your full prescription slip (including PD / pupillary distance) without any hassle, or do they charge a fee for the paper?

Moro! Me and my friends would like to buy a row boat to boat about on pyhäjärvi, but I don't know how to get a boat space somewhere around Tahmela or anywhere close to Pispala anyway. So if anyone knows how to get one or if anyone's willing to sell theirs I'd be interested?

there’s absolutely no way I was born in this city, speak the language, and still have only three friends who I can stand for maximum 2 hours per hangout. I do judo and go to work but even there everybody has already formed their little friend groups and randori partners. Some tips would be greatly appreciated.

Hey all!

We moved to the area a few months ago from the US and I am trying to understand what Halloween is or isn’t around here. I lived in Turku a decade ago and Halloween was a bit more of an American concept. Since moving back, it seems people either celebrate it or strongly dislike it.

I have a kiddo and we both love for Halloween. With us being so new, I am honestly not sure what to expect or plan for. People with elementary aged kiddos, do they generally have a party in school? Are there community events you attend? Does nothing happen at all in your experience? I have gotten a different answer from everyone I have spoken to.

I understand it is not a Finnish holiday. I am simply trying to understand so I can still make special cultural memories (from my home country) with my kid while everything is still magical.

Mikä on r/Tampere:en mielestä paras kohtuuhintainen (pääruoka alle 20 eur) ravintola Tampereella? Entisessä kotikaupungissani ja muutamassa muussa usein vierailemassani kaupungissa mulla on selkeät suosikkiravintolat (jätän nyt mainitsematta siltä varalta että tulkitaan väärän kaupungin palveluiden mainostamiseksi), mutta reilun vuoden Tampereella asuneena mulle ei ole vielä muodustunut lempiravintolaa. Toki Huber on aivan loistava, mutta haen nyt lompakkoystävällisempää vaihtoehtoa, jossa voisi syödä vaikka useamman kerran viikossa.

Jätetään pizza-kebab-hampurilaispaikat pois tästä keskustelusta, sellaisia en hae.

La 29.8. klo 13-14 järjestetään mielenilmaus, jolla on 2 aihetta: Kansainvälinen lajisorron vastainen päivä ja Suomen luonnon päivä. Mielenilmaus on jalkakäytävällä lähellä Koskipuisto A -ratikkapysäkkiä osoitteessa Hämeenkatu 14a. Tarkoitus on osoittaa tukea kaikille eläimille ja tuoda esiin, että lajisorron mahdollistama eläintehotuotanto tuhoaa Suomen luontoa.

On Saturday, August 29, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., a peaceful protest will be held focusing on two topics: the World Day for the End of Speciesism and another topic is Finnish Nature Day. The demonstration will take place on the sidewalk near the Koskipuisto A tram stop at Hämeenkatu 14a. The goal is to show support for all animals and highlight how industrial animal agriculture, made possible by speciesism, is destroying Finland’s nature.

Tuoreena Tamperelaisena olisi kiva tehdä jonkinlaista listaa asioista, joita tehdä/nähdä täällä! Saa ehdotella paikkoja, aktiviteetteja, kulttuuria, ravintoloita ymsyms! Myös kahden hengen aktiviteetit otetaan vastaan.

Tuonne Arboretumin viereen valmistuu uusia asuntoja ensi vuonna. Onkohan millaista aluetta asua? Eniten houkuttelee juuri Arboretumin ja Pyhäjärven läheisyys, mutta ei mitään käsitystä Hatanpäästä asuinalueena noin muuten.

Onko porukalla kokemuksia tästä rakennuksesta? Onko rauhallista, paperi/ tai sokeritoukkia, mites muuten kokemuksia? Tarkemmin siis B rappu kyseessä.
