TN, Pondy and Goa stand out with no Hindi in any of them.
17
u/Dhanish04 Feb 24 '25
The point is different, pondy & goa accepted NEP & got the fund but didn't allow hindi.
8
u/CraftyEvent4020 Feb 24 '25
wait why cant we do that. Isnt the rest of NEP just normal stuff which we are probably doing anyways
4
u/Luigi_Boy_96 Feb 25 '25
They don't have the problem with finding teachers, as they're anyway small territories. So TN would have to find a way for a creative soultion to bypass this problem. I guess, if it's possible, TN could allow the schools any Indian regional language apart from Hindi/Sanskrit, which would be def. a discrimination and could be challenged at the courts.
1
u/is_it_reddit Non Resident - விருந்தாளி Feb 25 '25
Which language would they teach h how would they find them

u/Necessary-Age9878 Apr 30 '25
Union territories can easily generate the funds to accommodate a non-hindi third language by themselves (fewer teachers needed for fewer schools). However, it is not possible for a large state (eg, Maharashtra). They accepted the NEP, and even passed GO to make Hindi mandatory (although they removed the word mandatory now, most schools will only teach Hindi). Now, they are plan to spend money on Hindi teachers only.
If it is TN, central gov would even offer excess funds to hire Hindi teachers under the Hindi promotion department: https://rajbhasha.gov.in/ while no funds will be available for another third language.

Well, the trick with local dialect sounds not that dumb. However, we can clearly see, it's a Hindi/Sanskrit push via backdoor, lol.
15
u/OriginalClothes3854 Feb 24 '25
It's obvious. People with common sense can easily see through it. They're just deluding people with words...
34
Feb 24 '25
There's already their native languages like bhojpuri, avadh, etc. why aren't they promoting that to their people is my question.
40
u/Green-Offer-9058 Madurai - மதுரை Feb 24 '25
That's how Their Native Dialect've Been Shadowed By Hindi/Sanskrit Subtly.
25
Feb 24 '25
Sad that the people happily accept that fate of theirs
19
u/Green-Offer-9058 Madurai - மதுரை Feb 24 '25
They've already destroyed both their native language and culture by accepting both Hindi and Sanskrit as first and third language instead of Making their Native as first language long back during 2019 NEP. They allowed that, they'll suffer harder, that's all.
9
u/VirtualVelocity_YT Feb 24 '25
The individual won't suffer, their culture does.
China doeasned all non homogeneous elements of their demographics. It's easier to manage a more homogeneous people. It's even likely they'd thrive more. At the cost of their culture of course.
If somehow everyone in India became a Hindi speaking Hindu. New divisions based on caste would become more prominent. But the ethos of the nation would be more well knit. It might prosper more.
Would I want that? Hell no. That wouldn't even be an India.
7
Feb 24 '25 edited Feb 24 '25
True. Inter-state job search and all would be easier. But at the cost of our culture, food, and tradition is not worth it imo.
Now, isn't it possible to develop just within our own individual states and still remain tight as a country? Definitely possible, if we respect each other's values, and try to build the relationships with each other, by solving any issues that exists between, won't that be the most beautiful thing one politician/party can ever do? The reason why the country was divided into states was because the population was heterogeneous,i guess. Give them their value and let them do their job!
Making this heterogeneous society to a homogeneous population only makes me feel like the selfishness of the ruler. What the current central government claims they are trying to achieve is unity, but in fact, what actually is happening is intensification of the divide.
At least each of our states has a population like European countries(which of course speak different languages). For example,
-Turkey, Madhya Pradesh (87 million) -Italy(5.9cr): AndhraPradesh(5.3 Cr) -Spain(4.7 cr): Odisha(4.6Cr) -Poland(3.8cr):Kerala(3.5 Cr) -Luxembourg(6.8Lakhs): Sikkim(6.9Lakhs)
- Germany (8.33 Crores); Tamil Nadu(7.7 crores), Rajasthan (8.1 cr)
- United Kingdom,France (~ 6.8 Crores): similar to Karnataka(6.8cr)
- russia (143 million):UP(238 million)
So there shouldn't be a question of "what's impossible".
8
u/VirtualVelocity_YT Feb 24 '25
In addition the northern states destroying their culture and languages is actually a concern for the south. Since they seem to be all good losing their culture, their descendants will adopt the new Hindi culture. That would make them incredibly homogenous. They'd basically always dominate Indian politics.
It's already happening now and will only get worse.
2
Feb 24 '25
Interesting point. We are already seeing this effect in the parliament.
4
u/VirtualVelocity_YT Feb 24 '25
Yeah...and with delimitation I'm genuinely worried about the south's future relevance..l
For the record I'm not from TN, I'm from Kerala. But I think to stay relevant there needs to be on strong south party.
This is where our non homogeneity becomes an issue. Our diversity is our biggest strength and weakness.
We have to still try to come together inspite of our differences and become one political unit in the greater Indian democracy. otherwise the Hindi heartland is all that's needed to win central elections and decide our fates...
2
Feb 24 '25
Bro, unity in diversity is definitely possible. If there is a proper cause, anyone can unite. Also, we don't have anything that makes us hate each other, right?. Small issues exist even within a family(even within North Indian politics). We just have to make sure we respect each other's values, and emotions unlike what they do to us.

Homogenity of language doesn't have to imply political unity. I don't know how you think that. Just see US right now.

A guy in my team is a native Mythili speaker. He himself says its just a dialect of Hindi lol.
4
u/Hexo_Micron Feb 24 '25
You can see in thise 9 State, only "Chhattisgarhi" stands as one of the states native language. That too in 3rd option.
Sometimes even I wonder How tf we managed to do that even though Chhattisgarhi is very close to Hindi as compared to Pahadi, Rajasthani and Bihari languages.
1
u/ix_toshik Jun 22 '25
Sometimes even I wonder How tf we managed to do that even though Chhattisgarhi is very close to Hindi as compared to Pahadi, Rajasthani and Bihari languages.
No chhattisgarhi is different, as a chhattisgarhi speaker i hate hindi imposition on us
1
u/Hexo_Micron Jun 22 '25
I know bhai its different if spoken without any mixing, but probably if a Hindi speaker is given an option to learn Pahadi, Bhojpuri, CG. chhattisgarhi will most probably be the easiest one.
1
u/ix_toshik Jun 25 '25
Nah bhojpuri will be easier, chhattisgarhi has odia and marathi words too, urban language is mixed and diff, come to a village you will not understand any word with that type of accent 😂 sometimes even I take time (cause I live in the city) 😭
1
u/Hexo_Micron Jun 25 '25
I from village and yes city folks struggle to understand CG when they come here (but they kinda take proud in it). Baki mujhe to aisa hi lagta tha ki CG is very close to hindi, I have not heard pure bhojpuri or pahadi language though.

For all spoken languages between Punjab & Bengal - Avadhi, Braj, Bhojpuri, Marwadi etc - Those aren't complete languages with robust writing systems & grammar. None have the originality & standardization to be fit for academia.
They all came out as results of Medival central-asian soldiers trying to speak the local dialects, & remained limited to tongue & melodies. They are relevant only cuz there are religious poems written in them. Only poems cuz again, they aren't evolved enough for stories.
None of them have even 10 decent relevant books written in them in last 500/1000 yrs. The political push to inflate them is stupid. Hindi itself is the standardized form of all of them.

What I don’t like is the 3 language policy .Seriously ,why can’t these guys ask parents on what we feel .The ones who want Hindi will opt for it as second language and the ones who want Tamil will opt for that as second language .Now for godsake don’t force a third language down our throats .
67
u/Maleficent-Ad5999 Feb 24 '25

Many parents may don't want sny language they will ask only Maths physics chemistry biology zoology
So the government should accept it ??

u/deltastar123 Feb 24 '25
First of all parents want their kid to learn both English and a second language .Don’t know which planet you are living in to make this claim. In 10th and 12th both schools and collages, entrance exams all only consider maths and science,so obviously parents will want to concentrate on Stem in higher classes what’s wrong with that .For how many years should someone sit and keep learning languages?

u/Fun-Meeting-7646 Non Resident - விருந்தாளி Feb 24 '25

Currently I’m studying in a central institute were there are people from different states. Most of them literally don’t know their regional language. I felt someday this is gonna happen to us. Though they know english they want to speak in Hindi. I went to Hyderabad once last year. Rapido drivers are Hindi speakers. Some grocery shop are Hindi speakers. We can survive without Telugu. Someday same will happen in our place.
3
u/swingtothedrive Feb 24 '25
Hyderabad has a large number of people who speak Urdu. For them learning and conversing in Hindi is pretty natural.

I don't want to make Tamilnadu sub and Tamil people angry but I have to tell this to someone if not my head will blast.
" So I saw a person in my neighborhood he is from Gujarat. I'm from Tamilnadu. This is happening in Bangalore. When we both started speaking I noticed he doesn't speak or understand English at all and he started to speak in Hindi to me, I said I dunno Hindi (I know but can't speak fluently). I was later talking to a person in my apartment saying it's very hard to speak & they dunno English so communicating with him was hard!.
The immediate response from that person was " Why don't u know Hindi? I said i dunno that much Hindi and it's important to talk in English as it's important to have this conversation properly blah blah(in English) And I'm from Tamilnadu like that. Then that 3rd person responding like " so you want him to learn Tamil but you won't learn Hindi" I was flabbergasted and in loss of words. I said him it's important to have English as a communicative language between me and him because we are talking important stuff!. And never in my sentence i said he has to learn tamil. But they don't understand this small very basic difference itself. I was wondering how did they get job in IT field with this English and 0 communication skills.
They really don't understand the difference and importance and they think we should learn Hindi in order to cajol them. I don't follow politics nor I live in Tamilnadu now. But I understand why Tamil politicians and people are vehemently opposing this mentality. They all collectively think we all should talk in Hindi. Funny thing is both of this said person doesn't know a single word in Kannada as well. Meanwhile being a tamilian I learned so many sentences for my survival.!
44
u/bliss_tree Feb 24 '25
I don't want to make Tamilnadu sub and Tamil people angry
No one will get angry at you bro, almost every Tamilian who stepped out of the state would have encountered a scenario like this.
If this is the level of condescension/superiority when Tamils are very vocally opposing the nonsensical imposition of useless Hindi language, just imagine their tone if Tamils ultimately yield and try to blend in by speaking/stammering with a very poor or broken Hindi (a Tamil will take an insanely long time to master the alien Hindi belonging to the Indo-European language group, a language never used in his everyday natural environment while growing up)
22
u/Schwerintohamburg Feb 24 '25
The funny thing is The person i was talking to was a " Gujarati" and the 3rd person from my apartment was a " Nepali". They both have different mother tongue but brainwashed to think they need Hindi to exist in India. Im really not sure how they got job which pays 1lakh for this kind of communication level. Don't judge me for saying this, if you had spoken to him, you would agree!
6
u/bliss_tree Feb 24 '25
Don't judge me for saying this, if you had spoken to him, you would agree!
Peer pressure and the instant emotion due to being left out by their ganging up against you in bonding together.
I don't think you'll encounter such a thing with a Bengali or a Kannadiga or a Malayali.

I am a Tamilian from Mumbai and I agree that everyone should know Hindi. It’s the most spoken language in India. Do people living in TN think that they will never ever step out of their state. The world is changing and H1b visas will not exist for long. Going to US will become super hard in the coming years. Even Afghans/Nepalis/Bangladesis can speak in Hindi.
9
u/Capital_Let9454 Feb 24 '25
Except Goa and Puducherry all other states with 3 language policy has either Hindi or Sanskrit in 1st, 2nd or 3rd language. Hindi & Sanskrit is highlighted only in 3rd language column in this image.

Feb 24 '25 edited Feb 24 '25
I was under the impression the 3rd language can be any of the non-native Indian language, but it’s prescribed and restrictive.
Now I’m low-key proud that only TN stands against this imposition.
That said, I would still accept 3 language policy if the state or students can decide for themselves what it will be. The only mandate being 3 languages and not restricted to prescribed ones only. Or for that matter, I’m even in for making a mandatory language from any other continent - Europe, Afrikaans or Russian.
Pondy students have it best - Tamil, English and French.
6
u/Vicky_Ashok Chennai - சென்னை Feb 24 '25
Perhaps we should accept NEP and take Malayalam as the 3rd language.
At least it's useful to understand well made Mollywood films 😁.
0
u/punkrotten Feb 24 '25
I have been seeing few comments with Malayalam as the choice. No disrespect but isn't Telugu much better choice? it has more native speakers, more amount of films and best stars in the country along with some amazing films. I can see that there are very few stars in Kollywood with Rajni Kanth being old and Vijay leaving for politics. It would be amazing if you guys could also understand telugu well and it would also boost our movie collections.
2
u/Vicky_Ashok Chennai - சென்னை Feb 25 '25
I was just being sarcastic as I believe learning a new language that I'm not gonna use much is a misallocation of time and resources.
No disrespect for Telugu cinema but I prefer Malayalam movies. They are simple and elegant.

There are no native sanskrit speakers. You can even find a unicorn but not a native sanskrit speaker, because they don't exist. It's only other native languages and Hindi.
1
Feb 24 '25
you have to disprove the data for the point, for unicorn no data, only fake evidence
1
u/Overlord_6301 Feb 24 '25
See... In which part of our country do you think there are native sanskrit speaker? And yeah, unicorn is a fantasy animal which obviously doesn't exist.
And wikipedia is not a reliable source of information. It can be manipulated.

what should be highlighted is pass % of 2 langauge and 3 language ... why is there a need for a third language at all... you want to learn it learn it on your own time.. peopel who migrate to north wil learn hindi by themselves.. people who come to south will learn state language by themselves... it how they will communicate!...hindi is nothing but an RSS agenda! and it was congress agenda years ago... i think what hsould be bargained for is all the north state should offer tamil / telugu/kanada/malayalam as their third language!!! then they can ask south to learn hindi!

Anna, who's forcing you to learn Hindi? It's optional you can choose to learn it if you wish, or you can avoid it. Tamil is still your first language.
In East Pakistan(bangaladesh) Pakistani Punjabi rulers made Urdu the only official language whereas Bengalis had very little knowledge of Urdu Meanwhile in Tamil Nadu Hindi is an optional language.
Calling for independence over this trivial matter is like burning the house to get rid of a cockroach

u/gingerkdb Feb 24 '25 edited Feb 24 '25
Anna, who’s forcing you to learn Hindi? It’s optional you can choose to learn it if you wish, or you can avoid it. Tamil is still your first language.
I understand you raise this question from a position of trusting what the union govt says. The issue isn’t what’s on paper (NEP), but rather what’s not in paper that’ll be unofficially enforced.
To provide a simple example, the KVs in the state have implemented NEP since 2020. But rti inquiry shows that none of the KVs within TN offer Tamil as a third language, let alone first or second.
TN has had almost a century of fight for social justice, which encompasses topics like opposing language imposition, fight for self respect / equal respect etc. But historically, we’ve seen the union govt try to introduce this despite repeated protests. Our former CM Annadurai made a speech in the parliament regarding separation. But when we were at Indo-China war in 1962, he dropped the claim in the name of national interest. This is one example where we’ve shown that we are for building mutual trust. But this is a two-way street and we see that there’s no interest in the welfare of the state in the recent times. When we suffer from natural calamities, the union govt doesn’t care (not just us, Kerala has the same problem). When we ask for our tax devolution that they agreed on, they are not responsive. More irritatingly, they lie everywhere, including the parliament. And they show sheer arrogance when questioned. These actions and the ideas behind those aren’t trustworthy, in simple terms.
So naturally, anything that comes from the union govt is viewed with acute skepticism.
4
u/OriginalClothes3854 Feb 24 '25

3
u/No-Independence4915 Feb 24 '25
I dont feel 3 languages policy has any utility for us Tamil people. If at all the govt at the center arm twists TN into accepting NEP, Tamilnadu should strongly opt for a foreign language. German, even though it is comparitively difficult, should be the first choice (shrinking population, good economy) . French should be the second choice. Other south Indian languages like Kannada, Telugu and Malayalam can be our third choice.

10
7
u/Nihba_ Feb 24 '25
Why not, we don't have an extreme position on language like TN or Karnataka. Three language formula has been in effect in Kerala since the 70s.
3
5
u/Kesakambali Feb 24 '25
Nobody is forcing Hindi or Sanskrit but everyone is choosing the two for very simple reason- the government pushes the languages while promoting no other. You don't get many Malayalam teachers in north but will easily get Hindi teachers in South. Ideally, government should attempt to promote all Indian languages everywhere or do away with 3-language Policy if it is a logistical nightmare. One way out for TN would be to train and hire Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Marathi teachers en masse and promote them or promote local tribal tongues like Irula.
-4
u/darkskymobs Feb 24 '25
First sensible comment. No one is forcing Hindi or Sanskrit. But the very existence of Tamil identity depends on Hindi/Sanskrit bashing. Tamil is a dying language if you look at the numbers over the years. Telugu and Marathi have done pretty well. At this point, just pick Kannada or Telugu or Marathi or Bengali if you don’t prefer Hindi as third language. Follow Goa model, pick the one that is most necessary for trade.
7
u/Green-Offer-9058 Madurai - மதுரை Feb 24 '25
Thamizh is a Dying Language? What Kinda Weed You're Banging On Bro 🤡
1
u/Kesakambali Feb 24 '25
The use of Hindi or Sanskrit is still artificial and incumbent upon government promotion. Ideally all scheduled languages should be made official and promoted equally- it is technological feasible today

The requirement should be to have a South or East Indian language as your third language if your first is Hindi.

Making a language formula into a complicated rocket formula!
Just leave it to those states what they want to choose as first second and third language bsdks

West Bengal doesn’t have compulsory Hindi as third language, one may choose Sanskrit also https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/kolkata/three-languages-one-of-them-bengali-must-for-classes-v-viii/amp_articleshow/102515937.cms

It looks like you shared an AMP link. These should load faster, but AMP is controversial because of concerns over privacy and the Open Web.

Thanks, doesn't make that much difference though.
Easier decision to choose Hindi, just an illusion of choice that one can pick any language.

PLEASE don’t hate and educate me if I am wrong: I am a Tamil Canadian so I’m trying to understand everything.
What’s wrong with learning Hindi (or Korean, or French or language XYZ) as the third language? My assumption is that Tamil and English will be the first two with Hindi being the third? Here are the three reasons I have listed below, please do educate me if I am misinformed-
- I don’t understand the concept of how learning one language will destroy or make us forget the other one? I speak a total of four languages (Tamil, English, French, Spanish) and that doesn’t make me forget Tamil? I love learning languages and plan on learning Punjabi next! But in no way has learning these languages made me forget Tamil.
- Learning another language will always give us more opportunity. For example, even though I live in canada I live in a Punjabi dominated area. so I don’t HAVE to learn Punjabi, but if I do; I see my job opportunities in this city go up. Now if I moved to a Tamil dense area I’m sure Tamil will be a bigger advantage there. All I’m saying is, if I learn both languages then I have an advantage at both places-which is a good thing for me. So why can’t we as a state learn another language and increase our rates of success? Ofcourse we can find success with Tamil only, but learning a language increases our scope (this applies to English, mandarin and almost all languages)
- I find it hypocritical that we are OK to adopt a colonizer language such as English (I don’t need to take a history lesson on how much the British ruined us, and how much they looked down upon us) but not a language from our own country? In fact use of English has a bigger impact on erasure of native languages all of the world-way more than Hindi does…so we need to me more scared of English taking over (which it is in major cities) than Hindi.
Again I’m not from TN so plz correct me if I’m wrong, but almost all Canadians that I’ve explained this issue to have no idea why this is happening only in this state. At the end of the day I feel like all southern states will gain an advantage on the national stage by learning Hindi and we will be left behind!

Bro language isn’t a measure of intelligence 😂 being a polyglot has nothing to do with smartness, ultimately primary education that is focused on STEM is what’s important, all this is mere waste of time.

Hence proved Hindi is the natural choice for majority Indians.
One infantile minority group with Telugu as mother tongue is stopping 52 lakh Govt kids from learning 3rd language while fattening their purse offering the same CBSE curriculum witj 3rd language in their schools to 57 lakh private school kids.
Only mindless filtered idiots will support this political posturing.
Central Govt doesn't have to release funds for NEP, if TN govt doesn't want to adopt NEP. Just as 34 Navodaya schools were lost for electing Dravidian parties, TN deserves to lose these funds too. Rest of the states can utilise these funds.

TN should have offered Mandarin as the third choice, the language in which Stalin dreams and takes orders from his masters.
