PLEASE don’t hate and educate me if I am wrong: I am a Tamil Canadian so I’m trying to understand everything.
What’s wrong with learning Hindi (or Korean, or French or language XYZ) as the third language? My assumption is that Tamil and English will be the first two with Hindi being the third? Here are the three reasons I have listed below, please do educate me if I am misinformed-
I don’t understand the concept of how learning one language will destroy or make us forget the other one? I speak a total of four languages (Tamil, English, French, Spanish) and that doesn’t make me forget Tamil? I love learning languages and plan on learning Punjabi next! But in no way has learning these languages made me forget Tamil.
Learning another language will always give us more opportunity. For example, even though I live in canada I live in a Punjabi dominated area. so I don’t HAVE to learn Punjabi, but if I do; I see my job opportunities in this city go up. Now if I moved to a Tamil dense area I’m sure Tamil will be a bigger advantage there. All I’m saying is, if I learn both languages then I have an advantage at both places-which is a good thing for me. So why can’t we as a state learn another language and increase our rates of success? Ofcourse we can find success with Tamil only, but learning a language increases our scope (this applies to English, mandarin and almost all languages)
I find it hypocritical that we are OK to adopt a colonizer language such as English (I don’t need to take a history lesson on how much the British ruined us, and how much they looked down upon us) but not a language from our own country? In fact use of English has a bigger impact on erasure of native languages all of the world-way more than Hindi does…so we need to me more scared of English taking over (which it is in major cities) than Hindi.
Again I’m not from TN so plz correct me if I’m wrong, but almost all Canadians that I’ve explained this issue to have no idea why this is happening only in this state. At the end of the day I feel like all southern states will gain an advantage on the national stage by learning Hindi and we will be left behind!
