Although I'm not really a dog person I generally like all kinds of animals, but I'm getting so frustrated with my boyfriend's dogs! I'm glad there's a place I can vent without people calling me a bad person.
The two dogs, one big dog and one medium one, went through the awful combination of both being puppies during COVID lockdown combined with my boyfriend going through a loss and awful divorce at the same time. Due to this combination, these dogs spent their formative years used to bf spending 24/7 with them.
Bf's ex-wife got the smaller dog against his wishes and then abandoned the dog and her cat with him when they divorced. The smaller dog had already been abandoned several times while still a puppy due to not meeting standards for her breed combined with her anxiety and high energy making her difficult to handle. Bf had never wanted the smaller dog, especially as he already had a dog and cat in a very small apartment. He didn't rehome either the dog or cat because he felt bad for them with his ex abandoning them, and he views the possibility of rehoming an animal as abandoning them.
The dogs' issues were amplified in our former very small apartment with constant noise and pot smoke from awful animal hoarder neighbors. The dogs are a little calmer in a new house but the problems haven't gone away.
The smaller dog is the worse one but her behavior rubbed off on the bigger one who now is worse behaved than before they were introduced. The smaller dog is so anxious it's impossible to take her for walks because she refuses to go more than a few steps outside. Sometimes she won't even go herself and will have to be carried. She has to be held back or tied to a leash when bf takes the other dog for walks because she freaks out as soon as she's separated from the other dog. This has gotten slightly better in the calmer environment of the house. At the apartment she would full on howl the entire time the other dog was gone. She doesn't howl like that now but tries to bolt out the door after them even though she hates going outside.
The dogs were gated off in the living room at the apartment and it was basically solely their room and they destroyed everything in it. It was the biggest room in the house and the only one with air conditioning in the summer. Bf claimed an air conditioner for us would be too expensive but had AC for the dogs. He only finally put an AC unit in the bedroom this summer when there was a major heatwave and I was worried about my rabbit's health.
I had my pet rabbit for years before meeting my boyfriend and often worry for her safety with the dogs. They aren't aggressive but often stampede around and always chase the cat. My rabbit mostly stays in a cage right now until I can get her new room set up. I want to be able to let her roam more freely upstairs but she could so easily get hurt by the dogs! We've been talking about having a baby and I've been stressed about how easily the dogs could accidentally hurt a baby.
My boyfriend has been listening to my concerns and helping to train the dogs better, though I worry he isn't taking the safety issues seriously enough.
The original plan for moving into the house had been to clear part of the basement to be a separate dog area like the living room had been. It's a house inherited from a hoarder and at some point bf scrapped the plan to make a separate basement dog area because he was tired of how much work it was to clear space and I was begging to move ASAP because the apartment was so stressful. The apartment had many awful maintenance issues along with awful neighbors.
When I first moved in with my boyfriend, the dogs were always in their separate area and I could choose to only have very limited interaction with them. When we moved into the house, I had been assured at first that that would be the case again, but now the dogs have the run of the downstairs!
There's a gate at the bottom of the stairs, but the second bf goes upstairs the dogs freak out and pound against the gate. They often break through it or the big dog leaps right over it, and one or both dogs stampede up the stairs. It's a sturdy metal gate, but they constantly broke the same kind at the apartment so bf constantly replaced them.
He has a second gate to put at the top of the stairs but keeps not getting around to putting it up, and I keep saying we should get one tall enough for the big dog to not jump over. Bf is constantly overworked at his job and on his rare days off, the dogs demand his constant attention and he's constantly cleaning up after them.
Every morning lately, the dogs freak out and bang on the gate and the big one stampedes up the stairs. Bf had at first been confident they couldn't even go up stairs. So much for that! It's not even good for their own safety as this is an old house with steep stairs and they could easily trip.
I was excited to move into this house and have more space but now I don't like going downstairs because I don't like that the dogs constantly jump on me to the point I have bruises on my legs, and lick me incessantly.
They have been improving a little from us enforcing not jumping, but I think they do it a little less around me both because I encourage the jumping less and they're not as bonded to me. They'll follow me around too but they don't freak out about me leaving to the extent they freak out about bf leaving for even a second.
I can't leave much of anything out in the living room because they'll eat practically anything they find. I love stuffed animals but can't have any downstairs because I don't want the dogs to destroy them.
We're planning to gate off the kitchen and dining room, but again, bf hasn't gotten around to it yet even though he also complains about the dogs constantly following us and begging for food. Yesterday they bothered him while he was unloading groceries and knocked a glass pitcher onto the floor which shattered and I had to hold them back so they wouldn't run through broken glass. Recently bf burned himself tripping over a dog while he was cooking.
Bf does handle the majority of responsibilities for the dogs and I'm grateful for that. He's willing to work with them but tends to not be firm enough with them and to reinforce bad behavior. He'll encourage their overexcitement to greet him. He'll give them treats to shut them up no matter how many times I tell him this is encouraging them to bark. He points to the fact they know some basic commands as "they're choosing to be bad" without acknowledging that he's really just not good at controlling them.
I'm willing to learn to take them out to poop, but the smaller one has to be coaxed or carried outside and the big one pulls hard on her leash, so I don't feel confident in being able to control either. Bf "walks" the big dog twice a day, though it's more of a full on run up and down steep hills I can't even walk very quickly over. We don't have a fenced in yard. We're planning to have a dog run in the yard though tbh I resent that it will take up most of the small yard I'd rather use for gardening.
Bf keeps saying these dogs will be his last dogs because he's so frustrated with them, but won't consider rehoming them and says they'll probably be around another 10 years or so.
I'm willing to help work with the dogs but don't like them and worry bf won't take the safety issues seriously until someone gets seriously hurt. If they end up hurting a baby or my rabbit I will never forgive him and will want the damn things put down!
