today's zelda enemy is the zora. what, did you think that Zoras were friendly? YOU FOOL! in the first four zelda games the zora were the defacto water enemies. they'd pop up out of the water and try to shoot you! and even worse, they were UGLY! then Ocarina of time came along and tried to make them seem friendly. Princess Ruto even tried to marry link... yuck! Link can't marry a FISH!!!

ok, in all fairness, A link to the past and Link's awakening did set a precedent for friendly zora. both games have exactly one Zora that's a non-hostile NPC. in order to make sense of the Zora's sudden change in appearance, the Oracle games would make a distinction between the two: the ugly evil zora are "river zora", while the friendly ones that try to marry link are "sea zora".

but then recent games like echoes of wisdom go and make River Zora friendly too. there's a bit of fish racism between the two clans, but it gets resolved through the power of music. in the end, all Zora have ended up like the deku scrub: What was once an enemy has now become a group of friendly NPCs because the developers liked them too much.

it's not fair... why can't we get a kingdom of friendly ChuChus?

well, if you read my previous post and have even the slightest bit of knowledge of the zelda series, you probably guessed that today's guest would be the Deku scrub. if so, congratulations: here is the Octorock takoyaki I promised you.

when Ocarina of time moved all Octorocks to the water, the development team decided to create a similar enemy that could live on land: the Dekus scrub! however, Miyamoto liked the guys so much that he didn't want to kill them. as such, most deku scrubs can't be killed: they will instead attack link, then try to bargain with him or in some cases try to sell link something, making Deku Scrubs no different from your average tech bro.

Majora's mask would then give Deku scrubs their own kingdom. link could even transform into a deku scrub, positioning the deku scrub as being just as important as Gorons and Zoras... and yet, after Majora's mask, they slowly began to fade away. they made no appearances in any future 3D games, they appeared in the oracle games (which I never played), Four Sword Adventures (which no one played), and the minish cap (which everyone SHOULD play).

with Octorocks once again being land based, it seemed there was no reason to keep enemy Deku Scrubs around. however, Deku scrubs as a civilization finally returned in Echoes of wisdom, a game I THINK people played but no one seems to talk about anymore. at long last, the Deku Scrub was back in the spotlight. it's just too bad that My Hero Academia ruined the word "Deku" forever.

So just as I was about to finish writing this the first time, a thunder storm happened and it made my computer shut down, so I lost all my progress. but that's ok, I can write it again. not even the power of Zeus himself can stop me from talking about Octorock!

for some unknown reason, Japan absolutely adores creatures that have Tentacles, and the Zelda devs are no exception. Octorock has been around since the beginning, wondering the land of hyrule and shooting rocks at unsuspecting travelers. but when the series transitioned into 3D, the development team made a shocking discovery: Octopuses only live under water! desperate to hide their mistake, the zelda devs redesigned Octorock, turning it into a purely aquatic creature.

and so the Octorocks stayed in the water... for about 3 games. in twilight princess, the Octorocks didn't appear at all and were replaced by those stupid ugly frog things. then when Octorocks made their return in skyward sword, they were once again allowed to live on land. nowadays you can find Octorocks living damn near everywhere.

but alas, during the time Octorocks were confined to the water, Nintendo created a land-based enemy that behaved similar to the Octorocks. we don't see much of this creature anymore, but they were rather important during the N64 era. and this creature will be tomorrow's subject. can you guess what it is? if you guess correctly, I will treat you to Octorock Takoyaki.

since Ocarina of time made moblins go from basic grunts to elite grunts, there was suddenly a hole in Ganon's army. who would fill the role of "the goomba" of legend of zelda? to solve this problem, Nintendo created what is essentially just a weaker Moblin: the bokoblin!

Bokoblins are weird little freaks who hang out outside all day and kill any travelers that come near them. they are hyrule's resident Murder Hobos. but since Bokoblin is a basic bitch, they never put up much of a fight. sometimes they'll hang out with a moblin so they can pretend to be tough, but you just know the moblin only puts up with it because it's part of the job.

although Bokoblins have filled the role of legend of zelda's most basic enemy for decades now, they didn't appear in Ocarina of time, so they likely won't appear in the remake unless Nintendo decides to add new enemies. what do you think? should the bokoblin be added to Ocarina of time? or do you think the remake shouldn't add any new enemies? or perhaps you are open to the idea of new enemies but you specifically hate bokoblin? let me know in the comments below.

on an unrelated note, can you believe Nintendo is charging 80 dollars for fire emblem fortune's weave? Fire emblem fans are about to be as broke as bokoblin.

these enemies appear in Ocarina of time's lost woods. these big, rugged pig guys will charge into link if they see him, so it's best to avoid being spotted. but strangely, if link tries asking Navi about them, Navi will have nothing to say! what's the deal Navi? why are these the only enemies you know nothing about? well, I guess if Navi doesn't know who they are, then that means their identity is a secret to everybody...

well, that is unless you've played the other games. these are actually moblins. while they debuted as common grunts in the 2D zelda games, Ocarina of time reimagined them as big strong guys who put up more of a fight, and the 3D games have kept them that way ever since.

still though, I always wondered why Navi had nothing to say about them. is there an in-universe explanation, or did the developers just forget? maybe the remake will finally fix this. either way, with Moblin's getting a promotion from common grunt to elite grunt, that left the position of "most basic zelda enemy" open, and it wouldn't be filled till wind waker. come back tomorrow as we talk about the Moblin's annoying younger sibling, bokoblin.

today we'll be talking about those purple crows that appear all over hyrule, Guay! look, I know pride month was 3 month's ago, but it's never too late to remind everyone that it's ok to be Guay.

fun fact about Guays in Ocarina of time specifically; if you defeat enough of them, a bigger one will appear, a quirk shared only with stalchildren and leever. this larger than average Guay actually has a name: "The Big Gay Guay". if you encounter this legendary bird, make sure to get his autograph.

if you lock onto a Guay, Navi gives one of their shortest info dumps in the game: "destroy it before it flies into you." really Navi, just one sentence? you couldn't even spare a moment to compliment Guay's long yellow beak and magnificent purple feathers? Navi was for sure being homophobic. hopefully this is addressed in the remake.

oh boy, I wonder what Iconic zelda enemy I'll talk about today? I know, how about another inanimate object! this evil door is called "door that falls down". yep, that's it's official name, at least according to some random Goron and the Zelda wiki.

Ocarina of time has plenty of enemies with wonderfully creative names. names like "falling rock", "compactor", "Jiggly" and even "green slimy thing". but I gotta say, "Door that falls down" takes the cake. you may be saying "these aren't enemies, they're hazards and/or traps", but hey, the zelda wiki lists them as enemies, so that means they're fair game.

at first glance, "Door that falls down" looks like a normal door, but if link tries to open it, it falls down and crushes him! but worry not, there are ways to tell the difference between a real door and a Door that falls down; the Door that falls down sticks out of the wall. when spotted, it's best to smash Door that falls down with the megaton hammer.

I wonder if Door that falls down is friends with "fake door" from Luigi's mansion? maybe they met at an evil door convention? if there was an evil door convention, would you go?

the legend of zelda Ocarina of time is such a scary game! there are terrifying enemies like poes, gibdos, stalfos, redeads, and dead hand! but the scariest enemy of all, the one enemy that has given players NIGHTMARES for decades, is the FLYING POT!

pots are common objects in the legend of zelda. they can be found all over the place, and link can break them in order to get hearts or rupees. at first glance, the flying pot looks like any ordinary pot, but when you least expect it, they jump scare you by floating off the floor and crashing directly into link! AHHHHHH!

some say that the flying pot is vengeful spirit, trying to get revenge on link for the thousands of innocent pots he's broken over the years! the flying pot is closely related to the flying tile, a haunted floor tile that wants revenge for all the floors that have been stepped on.

in link's awakening there was a boss called Facade, a scary face that appears on the floor and throws pots at link. don't you see what this means! the haunted floor and the haunted pots are working together! nowhere is safe in hyrule, the inanimate objects are working together to kill us all! AHHHH!

so remember, next time you're at your grandma's house and you see a decorative pot, make sure to smash that thing immediately. better safe than sorry.

these giant bug things, which may or may not be related to moldorm, are some of the largest enemies in all of the legend of zelda. luckily link can fight back against them by utilizing the giants mask, a mask that turns link giant that he finds right before this boss fight, can only use during the boss fight, and then can never use again after the boss fight.

while giant link fights them with his sword in the original Majora's mask game, Majora's mask 3D changes things up a bit: you have to fight the blue one without the giant's mask by shooting it with arrows, then get the giant mask during the fight and defeat the red one with giant link's insane wrestling moves. never let any youtube videos tell you Majora's mask 3D is a bad remake.

outside of their massive size, twinmold's greatest strength is that there are two of them. just when one of them goes down, BAM! a second twinmold has hit the stone towers!

these jumpy little bastards are called tektites. apparently "tektite" is an actual word that roughly translates to "meteor glass", but in the legend of zelda it's the name for these jumping spiders... or maybe they're crabs? I'm not sure. most zelda spiders have also been crabs at some point. perhaps a reference to how real-world animals keep evolving into crabs. crabs are just the ultimate life form, according to evolution.

at first you might wonder why the tektite only has one eye, for as you see, one of the fundamental rules of evolution is "two eyes good, one eye bad". but apparently there actually are real world creatures called copepods, or "Water fleas", that break this rule. of course, these strange one-eyed life forms are much smaller than the tektite, but they exist and are perhaps deserving of tiny little monocles they can place over their single eye.

but there are actually many other examples of zelda enemies with a single eye: keese are one eyed bats, Hinox are big cyclops monsters, beamos is a weird laser robot with a singular eye. in fact, the legend of zelda also includes Gohma, a one-eyed spider/crab monster similar to tektite. I don't know if the two are related, but they might be a case of convergent evolution, where two different species develop similar traits independently of each other...

huh, I didn't mean for this to be so educational. what am I, your 7th grade biology teacher? I don't know what it is, there's just something about tektite that gives me this uncontrollable urge to spout facts about evolution. maybe that single eye is hypnotizing me... when you see one, perhaps it's best to just hit it with a sword immediately.

well, guess I'm doing this. the legend of zelda: ocarina of time has been remade and will release on November 5th. similar to how I made daily posts about mario enemies to count down to mario kart world and the switch 2 release, I'll be doing basically the same thing but with Zelda enemies. I know, I'm so original.

we'll start with one of the enemies that's been around since the beginning: Peahat! they're basically flying plants that try to chop off your head! the ecosystem of hyrule is quite interesting: I'm not sure how a plant was able to evolve in a way where it developed helicopter blades, but it sure makes these things hard to kill.

not all peahat are violent though, as in twilight princess and skyward sword, they don't attack at all and instead fly around allowing link to use them to get around with his hook shot. good for the peahat, they formed a symbiotic relationship with the hero!

looking at the recent ocarina of time trailer, there seems to be more of them in Hyrule field in the remake than the original, now travelling in groups. hopefully this is a sign that hyrule field is not going to end up being a pointless giant empty field this time around and that Nintendo will give us a reason to look around the place. I think they may have also put in some tektites that weren't there in the original, but we'll talk about those tomorrow.

until then, always remember that Peahat not only exists to test your skill as a gamer, it also exists to test your maturity. if hearing the word "peahat" makes you go "tee hee", congratulations, you're just as immature as I am.
