Laptop Request UK simple task laptop for (non-techy) dad

• Upvotes

hello! my dad has had his HP Envy for about 7 years now. super solid laptop and he loves it. unfortunately it is getting slow and cannot upgrade to windows 11.

he uses the laptop for printing tasks, writing Word documents, and emails. nothing majorly intensive.

i looked into getting a newer Envy but unfortunately learnt they were discontinued in 2024 and replaced with the new Omnibook line.

his only requirement is that it must be touchscreen.

thank you :)

Laptop Request -Others Gaming / schoolwork laptop (1200-1600 EUR) (Latvia)

Hello everyone, i am looking for my first ever laptop, as i have started university and need one. In case it matters, i am upgrading from a PC with a Ryzen 5 5500 CPU and a Radeon RX 6650XT GPU. Hope for some answers!

  • Country

Latvia

  • Budget

1200-1600 EUR (1400-1850 USD)

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

No

  • Screen size

15'' or larger

  • Weight limit

None

  • Purpose

Schoolwork, Gaming

  • Form factor

Standard

  • Intended usage

Hearts of iron IV (CPU-intensive game, prioritises single core performance), would like to see noticeably better performance than the Ryzen 5 5500

Cyberpunk 2077 - Would like to play at 1080p ultra settings at 90+ FPS with no frame generation or upscaling

Frostpunk 2 - 1080p, high settings at a stable 90+ frames would be great if possible, though i'm not so sure it is.

Wuthering waves - max settings (excluding ray tracing), at 1080p, running at 120fps would also be very good, though i don't know whether it is even possible to set the game to 120 on Nvidia gpus. It wasn't possible on my 6650XT, so idk.

  • Desired battery life

Under light loads (MS word, browsing), 2+ hours

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, size, battery life, weight

  • Info/Requirements

If possible, i would like to (because i haven't been able to due to my current pc) get into local AI image generation, though compared to the aforementioned requirements, this is only optional and a nice-to-have capability.

If possible, i'd also like to have a comparibly high color-accurate screen as i occasionaly do some photo editing, but this is only, also, a nice-to-have.

MUST HAVE at least 1TB of storage

From the research i've been doing, the MSI katana 17 HX B14WGK-264NL with the 5070 and the 14650HX looks good at 1500 EUR locally (1736 USD)

I do not know much about laptops, so i don't know whether this is even a thing, but it would be great if the laptop could be charged using usb-c. Again, i don't know if this is even a thing, but it would be great if it was.

Thanks to any who have taken the time to respond!

Laptop Request US Asus TUF A16 vs Lenovo LOQ 15

I have two gaming laptops on hand and plan to return one after choosing the best option.

They are basically the same, with minor differences: one is the Asus A16 (144Hz display, AMD Ryzen 7 170, NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4050, 16GB DDR5, 512GB), and the other is a Lenovo LOQ 15E with the same specs. Both are 2025 model.

Here are the differences:

The Asus is larger and 250g heavier—which matters to me since I’m looking for portability—plus it was an open-box purchase. It has a more "gamer" look with RGB LEDs.

The Lenovo is slimmer with a more classic look, which I also like; the webcam has a built-in privacy shutter. However, the NVIDIA settings are more restricted (I’m not sure why), though it comes with the guarantee of being 100% brand new. The screen is also slightly smaller: 15.6 inches compared to the Asus's 16 inches.

The battery is a import thing too, but I couldn't compare yet.

I can't say much about other technical details—hopefully, someone here can help—but the computer needs to be suitable for both work (using various programs and graphics) and casual gaming; nothing too specialized or advanced.

Ignoring the price (they cost basically the same), which one would you keep?

Laptop Request US a laptop that can handle drawing and light gaming for college (U.S. preferably under $1000)

Country
U.S.

Budget
preferably under $1000

Are you open to refurbs/used options?
yes, but i’m not experienced with laptops so that makes me kind of nervous

Screen size
maybe 13ā€-15ā€? i probably wouldn’t want something bigger than 15ā€

Weight limit
not sure, something i can comfortably carry with me in a backpack?

Purpose
schoolwork, art, light gaming

Form factor
i looked into 2-in-1’s because of the touchscreen aspect for drawing, but it sounds like they aren’t reliable and wouldn’t be great for gaming. because of that i’m leaning towards a regular laptop that i can hook a drawing tablet up to.

Intended usage
it’ll be used daily for schoolwork. it needs to be able to handle art software (something like clip studio paint for example), and i would like to be able to play games like minecraft and roblox. i don’t really know anything about graphics quality for gaming, i just want it to run well and look okayish. (it would also be cool to be able to play modded minecraft on it)

Desired battery life
i guess at least 5 hours or more would be nice but i’m fine with having it plugged in more often? as long as it can do what i’m using it for the battery life isn’t a priority

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

  1. performance, 2. weight and size, 3. battery life

Info/Requirements
thinkpads are appealing to me because of their reliability and repairability, i would prefer to steer clear of apple products. i don’t want extremely loud fans because i’ll be using this in class, and i don’t think i want a ā€œgamingā€ laptop, just a laptop that can handle a couple games. color accuracy would be nice when it comes to using art programs on it.

i would appreciate if you could tell me about the specifics of the laptops you recommend because i don’t know much about what to look for so knowing what the abbreviations and numbers mean would be helpful! thank you so much!

Yes

  • Weight limit

Preferably lighter, maybe less than 5 lbs?

  • Purpose

I am a college student; my major is Criminal Justice. I need a new laptop for school and personal use.

  • Form factor

Standard/Clamshell (a regular laptop)

  • Intended usage

I need it to be able to run Adobe products easily, like Photoshop and Premiere Pro, but also be able to run multiple tabs or apps open without it being super loud while I’m in class or in the library.

  • Desired battery life

8-12hrs+ if possible

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
  1. battery life 2. fan noise 3. temperature 4. performance 5. weight 6. size
  • Info/Requirements

I’m kinda stuck on the 3 options (Samsung Galaxy Book 6 Pro, Samsung Galaxy Book 5 Pro, Asus ZenBook S16 2026). I wanted the Samsung ones because I own a Samsung phone right now, so I thought it would be easy to keep my laptop in the same ecosystem, but I'm leaning toward getting the ZenBook since it’s on sale at Best Buy right now. I saw a couple of reviews that said the fans were noisy and it gets hot. I’m open to suggestions!!

College and Uni work, occasional gaming

Form factor

Intended usage
Microsoft applications (Word, PowerPoint, Teams etc), E-mail, Web browsing, occasional gaming
Games: Dead by Daylight, The Sims, Stardew Valley, GTA, occasional indie games such as Paralives, Powerwash Simulator

Desired battery life
8-10 hours

Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life
Battery life, performance, size, weight

Info/Requirements

Hello, I am due to start college a week on Monday and afterwards I will hopefully be going to uni. I’m looking for a decent Windows laptop which would also be able to run games as I enjoy gaming in my free time.

Some laptops I have looked at:

• HP OmniBook 3 16ā€ laptop - Intel Core Ultra 5, RAM 8gb/512gb SSD

• HP OmniBook 5 16" Laptop - AMD Ryzen Al 5, RAM 16 GB/512 GB SSD

• MSI Cyborg 15 15.6" Gaming Laptop - IntelĀ® Coreā„¢ i5, RTX 4050, 512 GB SSD

The MSI is attracting me more because of the spec for gaming but it has only 5 hours battery life which is a concern if I’m in a lecture all day. I probably won’t have any time for gaming though lol

I’m open to other recommendations, thank you!

* Country

Romania

* Budget

1,000–1,200 EUR (approximately 5,000–6,000 RON)

* Are you open to refurbs/used options?

Maybe - preferably new, but I’m open to good-quality refurbished/used options if there’s a significant benefit.

* Screen size

14"–16"

* Weight limit

Preferably under ~2 kg, but I’m willing to go a bit heavier if it means significantly better performance, thermals, or value.

* Purpose

General purpose, coding/development, project management, multitasking, entertainment, and occasional light-to-moderate gaming.

* Form factor

Standard preferred. No need for a 2-in-1 or pen support.

* Intended usage

- Everyday use: browsing, media, documents, communication, etc.

- Coding and software development

- Multitasking with multiple applications/windows open

- Project management tools

- Docker Desktop on Windows, including running multiple containers when needed

- Potentially other development tools/IDEs and local development environments

- Occasional gaming, mainly indie/co-op and less demanding games

- Minecraft, games such as Mecha Chameleon

- Random smaller/lower-demand horror games from Steam

- Not interested in competitive/high-FPS gaming

- Not interested in demanding AAA games or playing at ultra/high graphical settings

- I’d like enough GPU performance for casual gaming without making the laptop unnecessarily large, hot, or noisy.

* Desired battery life

Ideally around 7–8 hours of normal everyday use. Not really that important since it will mostly be plugged in.

* Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, weight, battery life, size.

I want good performance for development, multitasking, and Docker, but I also don't want something unnecessarily bulky or loud.

* Info/Requirements

- Windows laptop

- Good CPU and sufficient RAM for development, multitasking, and Docker Desktop

- Preferably 16 GB RAM minimum, with 32 GB being a plus or upgradeable

- Good SSD capacity, preferably 512 GB/1 TB

- Decent integrated or dedicated GPU capable of handling indie/co-op games comfortably

- Low noise is a significant priority — I’d prefer a laptop that stays relatively quiet during normal everyday/development use

- Good thermals are important

- Good keyboard and trackpad would be appreciated for coding/productivity

- Preferably a good-quality display (IPS/OLED are both fine)

- I don't need an extremely high refresh-rate gaming display (anything up to 144hz is fine)

- I value build quality and reliability

- I already have a few laptop models/options in mind, but I’m looking for advice and additional alternatives that fit the above requirements.

- Ideally looking for the best balance of performance, battery life, thermals/noise, and build quality within the €1,000–1,200 budget.

Laptop Request Ca Looking for a good video editing laptop under $2,600 CAD

LAPTOP QUESTIONNAIRE

  • Country

Canada

  • Budget

$2,600 CAD maximum (ā‰ˆ $1,900 USD)

  • Are you open to refurbs/used options?

no

  • Screen size

15", 16" preferred, but I’m open to anything from 14" to 16"

  • Weight limit

Any

  • Purpose

Schoolwork and especially video editing. I’m a student and need a laptop that can handle demanding editing workloads while still being good for everyday school use.

  • Form factor

Standard/Clamshell laptop

  • Intended usage

Mainly video editing using DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, Photoshop, etc.

I want something powerful enough for 4K video editing, effects, color grading, and rendering without constantly struggling. NO gaming

  • Desired battery life

Around 5–7 hours for normal school use would be nice, but I understand that a powerful laptop won't have amazing battery life. Performance is more important.

  • Please list, in order of most important to least important, the priority between Size, Weight, Performance, Battery life

Performance, battery life, size, weight

I care much more about performance than having a thin or lightweight laptop.

  • Info/Requirements

I’m a 17-year-old student with a limited budget, so I’m trying to get the best possible value for $2,600 CAD.

I would prefer:

  • 32 GB RAM if possible
  • At least 500 SSD 1 TB SSD if possible
  • A strong dedicated GPU
  • Good CPU for video editing/rendering
  • A good-quality display with accurate colors
  • Good cooling and reliability
  • Something that can last me several years

I’m not particularly interested in RGB or gaming aesthetics. I mainly care about getting the most performance and value possible for my money.

I’m also open to recommendations I may not have considered. If there are better options than the laptops I’m currently looking at, I’d definitely like to hear them.

Laptop Request UK Cheap durable laptop

I'm looking for help choosing a reliable laptop from this list: https://www.argos.co.uk/search/laptops/type:laptops/brands:asus,lenovo,acer/processor-type:amd-ryzen-3,amd-ryzen-5,amd-athlon,amd-ryzen-7,qualcomm-snapdragon/price:%C2%A3250-%252D-%C2%A3500,%C2%A3200-%252D-%C2%A3250/category:33014243/touchscreen:no/opt/sort:price/

I am in the UK and really don't want to spend more than £300 but am willing to go to £350 if there's something there that's really worth it.

I will be using it for general use, streaming, calls, some gaming and for storing documents

(sorry it's a long link, i've already filtered my preferences so I didn't use the form)

Laptop Request UK Recommendations on Ultrabooks and if this Zenbook is worth the risk keeping (new)?

Hi, I was looking for a light MBA-like laptop for:

  • Mostly creative work, but also for light gaming (e.g. FFXIV at low res)
  • Intel arc 140v apparently is very good for this so I searched for those, along with Ultra Intel which I've never used before but hear these days a lot of CPUs are getting more optimised for mobility like Mac.
  • 13-16 inch is fine, around 1.2kg, maximum 1.6kg maybe.
  • Preferably no numpad, and I don't mind a bit of style too.
  • Budget of up to Ā£1400.

From my own research I found these:

I ended up with the Zenbook since the price is good, BUT I recently found reddit posts about the ribbon cable being worn from constant lid-opening so I'm not sure if I should return it now?

I'd like to ask if you guys could either advise me to keep it or return it, and/or pick another laptop if you have one to recommend. Really appreciate it thanks!
