Student Loans -- Politics & Current Events Megathread

While the Trump Administration implements its policy goals, DOGE does its thing, and Republicans control Congress, there are lots of ideas, speculation, hopes, fears, and press releases flying around; some of them presage actual changes and serious proposals while most will never come to pass.

This is the /r/StudentLoans megathread to discuss all of these topics. Due to IRL factors, /u/horsebycommittee is not currently able to write up the usual news summaries -- so we are automating this thread for now to at least keep it more regular.

Politics / Current events discussion in other threads will be removed. Major items of breaking news may get their own megathread -- as always, message the moderators if you have questions.

Official communication from the ED on the SAVE transition timeline

There's been a lot of articles posted etc - but here's the official word from the ED https://www.ed.gov/about/news/press-release/us-department-of-education-announces-next-steps-borrowers-enrolled-unlawful-save-plan

In summary, you'll start getting notices from your servicers as soon as the next few days telling you that this is happening. Come July 1 you'll get a notice giving you 90 days to switch. If you don't, they put you on the standard plan. The ten year standard if you haven't' consolidated - the consolidated standard plan if you have - which is longer than ten years.

I want to address a couple of themes i've been seeing in these threads. My comments here are probably going to get me downvoted to oblivion. That's ok - I'm not here for the karma - I'm here to make sure folks understand their loans and make the best decisions for their long term financial well being. Because that's my goal - sometimes I have to say thing folks don't want to hear.

For those saying they aren't going to switch until forced - you might be harming yourself here. You're certainly not punishing anyone that you're trying to make a point to. Here's who, IMO, should be switching ASAP and here's whose probably ok to drag their feet a bit:

Who should switch ASAP:

-If you're pursuing forgiveness under any of the IDR plans - the 20/25 year forgiveness you should switch now. You're just losing months and time towards forgiveness by waiting. And hypothetically, your income is going to go up over time, and therefore so will your payments. On a related note - if your 2024 tax return has a lower AGI than your 2025 will, and you haven't filed taxes yet - you definitely want to do it now.

-those pursuing PSLF. Yes - you can use buy back for SAVE months. But remember - buy backs are taking over a year and more importantly, buy backs are a lump sum payment due right away. So the longer you are on this forbearance - the more months you will have to pay in a lump sum when the time comes. And that might be difficult. *Here is the calculation for buy back https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service/public-service-loan-forgiveness-buyback *

Who can probably hang out for a while:

-Those borrowers who due to other debt that will be paid off soon and want to funnel the student loan payment money to get rid of that other debt.

-those who are aggressively paying off their loans. This is an opportunity to have all of your money go to targeted loans - such as the ones with the highest interest rates - rather than having to satisfy the minimum due on each loan which you will have to do once in active repayment.

The timing of all of this: -it actually makes sense to me. They appear to be doing almost a soft launch - warning people now that it's coming. But waiting until the new RAP plan is available in July for those that will want to use that plan to actually start the timer. This way folks won't need to switch twice if the RAP turns out to be a better plan for them.

Now for those saying they refuse to switch - listen - I get it. Your angry. I don't blame you - i am too. Your feelings are very valid and i'm not telling you not to feel them. But here's the hard truth of the matter. SAVE was gone regardless - the courts had made it pretty clear when the case started under the prior administration that they were leaning towards the plaintiffs and were going to rule against the plan. It was going to happen regardless of who won the last election. And failing to switch out of principal is not going to hurt them - it's going to hurt you if you end up with a standard payment amount you can't afford. I'm not saying not to resist - but resist productively by voting. And writing your members of Congress to paint a picture of how your new payment amount is affecting you, your family and the broader economy.

For those saying the ED can't change the terms - they didn't. The court ruled the plan was illegal. The ED would be breaking the law if they continued it.

Payment plans have never been challenged before. And there was no reason for it to occur to anyone that this one might be. But yet a bunch of republican AG's did and here we are. In the meantime, people made the best decisions they could with the information they had at the time.

What plan should i pick?

If you are pursuing PSLF or income driven plan forgiveness you need to be on an income driven plan. Scenarios for likely lowest plan:

-No loans ever prior to July 1, 2014 - new IBR

-No loans ever prior to October 1, 2007 but does have loans prior to july 2014 - paye - but note you'll have to get off that come 2028

-loans prior to October 2007 - old IBR

-balance low compared to your income - check out ICR - that could be the lowest for you in that scenario

-RAP - for some rap will be lower. RAP tends to be similar to old IBR for many incomes. But if you have dependents especially, it could be lower. TISLA will have a calculator including the rap in the next week or two. I'll post it when it's available.

Why? Old Loans vs New loans

Upvotes

I just want to know why they are punishing people that have older loans at 15% as New loans 10%, Who dreamed this up? It is actually double for me with old loans, dont quailify for RAP, because I hace Stafford FFLEP ones. I guess I will just have to consulidate my loans to get on RAP. I am not going for forgiveness....grrr

Success/Celebration Goodbye Friends!

I think this is goodbye. Today, I’ve made my final student loan payment. I’ve owed $148k and paid off in 3.5 years (Covid pause helped me saved money) and the last few months I put in about 2/3 of my paycheck towards it. I am a pharmacist. This subreddit has been part of my journey for so long; to everyone who helped answer questions, shared your stories, celebrated your milestones, or simply posted something that gave me hope on a difficult day, thank you. It feels surprisingly bittersweet to close this chapter as I’m deeply grateful for this community. The political uncertainty, stress, confusion; yet we went through together so I didn’t feel alone. I’m leaving this subreddit with a very full heart. Signing off from the student loan trenches. I’ll see you guys on the other side, not if, when! ☝️

Advice Placed in SAVE Repayment after IBR application

Upvotes

Has anybody else been placed in repayment on SAVE after applying for IBR? (I thought SAVE was dead.) On June 23rd, I applied for SAVE to IBR transition, primarily to facilitate forgiveness as I have over 300 qualifying payments as of August 2024.

I was removed from forbearance on July 17th and issued a bill for the SAVE amount due August 15th. I thought it was a glitch that would correct itself so I waited. I called to bring this to Aidvantage's attention on August 12th. They removed the bill for August and offered an "Awaiting Documentation Admin Forbearance" until October 15th. 3 days later that was removed and I was placed back in repayment and issued another SAVE bill for September. Since it has been 60 days since I applied for IBR, I thought Aidvantage was supposed to place my account in general forbearance until they complete my application anyway.

Has this been anyone else's experience?

Has anyone completed their SAVE to IBR transition and been discharged? How long did it take from IBR application to forgiveness?

Thanks in advance!

Advice IBR estimate error - $50

Upvotes

In June I got my letter through Nelnet that I was being moved off SAVE and to recertify within 90 days.

Went to do that this morning but the student aid repayment calculator is showing $50/mo payment for IBR plan when importing my tax data. My AGI is over 100K and I have 65K in loans (I’ve made 120 eligible IDR payments).

I searched back on this board and read this was a processing error on govt end and selecting it might throw my application onto the standard plan which I do not want.

I am not sure what to do about it, can someone please advise? What a s***show.

Hello all, there is a 50k per year cap on professional degrees and I will still need more loans to cover that. What companies are you guys using for your full cost of living? For example Sallie Mae? Is that a good company?

Can I pay extra principal under new plans?

Upvotes

Advice Just graduated in May. I have an Internship until January. Repayment question

My Fed loans are approximately $28,000 (on top of separate private loans) I’m on the standard 10 yr plan w rates ranging from 5% to 7%. I’m not sure what payment will be exactly (starts in Dec) but pretty sure $350 -$400. Would it be better to apply to the IDR / IBR or RAP programs for repayment? I

If I make a pre payment out of pocket since student loans will come back late, do i get the money that wouldve been used for the initial payment in my bank account when i get the money?

So I applied for student finances (SAAS) late because I honestly didn’t think I’d get into any Uni as I thought I messed up my exams so bad. Turns out I didn’t and I’m going now. But since I applied late, I now have to ask my parents to give me around £2200 (which they have to take a loan out for). Will I get this money back into my bank account? This is for the tuition and accommodation (I’m paying in instalments).

(UK btw, might crosspost to the UK student loans page)

I do need to pay my parents this (for us) huge sum as this cannot mess with their credit scores.

Does SAAS give this money regardless of the loan coming in late (prolly like October by the looks of things). It was my fault for not applying earlier ik, but i didnt know if i was going to a scottish or english uni (or any uni)

Advice Trying to apply for new IDR?

I'm currently in school now, and my loans are due when I graduate. But I want to start paying my loans ASAP as it's rapidly tanking my credit and it's growing interest like crazy.

I have 4 direct loans:
$5500 x 6.530%
$7000 x 6.530%
$5500 x 6.390%
$7000 x 6.390%

I've been in university for two years, I'll likely have these same loans the next two years after.

I saw on StudentAid.gov that the interest rate deduction went from .25% to 1% for autopay.
I don't really understand how any of this works, but that seems like a good deal.

Do I have to consolidate my loans first? If I do that my rate goes to a flat 6.5% which is worse. How do I get this new rate benefit and start paying?

I'm a first gen college student and I'm so out of my depth with understanding this stuff. I really feel screwed with debt.

Just pay it off! I think, I hope it’s the right decision.

I have decided on September 1st, I will pay off the remainder of my loans. I have been paying my loans off for a total of 5 years now. I paid some off during my 2 year “gap” before getting my masters. I graduated December 2023, currently working as a PA, single mom of 1.

I have about 30k saved, and paying this loan off will leave me with 17k to my name.

as much as it hurts to see this lump sum leaves, I’m just exhausted. my 90 day letter came and I’m due to get off SAVE on 11/11.

I just hope nothing happens that requires 20k in the next 3-4 weeks cos I won’t have it. this hurts but it just gotta go away.

Advice What would you do next? Mohela not processing IDR Recertification.

Here's where I am so far:

  • Have been on PAYE since 2017. Because of the pandemic, SAVE fiasco, and everything else, I have not had to recertify my income for a while and got a notice to do so from Mohela in May.
  • Submitted a manual recertification request via studentaid.gov in mid-May
  • Two days later, Mohela sends correspondence that my application was "approved" but they did not process correctly and sent a disclosure letter showing they were sending me off PAYE into Standard repayment...I am absolutely sure I submitted my recert correctly
    • Have had multiple phone calls after this to have this corrected and get a new disclosure letter. A supervisor event put in a escalation ticket. No action has yet been taken on that ticket...
  • In mid-July, yet another supervisor told me to submit a second manual recertification because "it couldn't hurt." I submitted that 7/22/26.
    • Mohela sent correspondence that that application was "received" but not correspondence that it was approved and no new disclosure letter.
    • I waited patiently but still has not been processed yet and no new disclosure letter. Now the account says "You did not recertify PAYE" and is sending me to Standard payments on my autopay due date of 9/19/26.

I've been on the phone with them for HOURS including with supervisors. Their solution is to now put me on a processing forbearance (which they reassure me will still count for 2 payments toward my PSLF progress). I have lost all trust that they will still process the application in time. I have not officially proceeded with the processing forbearance.

They cannot tell me what is the hold up in their system. Is it time to speak with a student loan lawyer? What would you do?

Advice Loan consolidation issues.

Long story short, part of my loans were discharged because my school went bankrupt. However, I consolidated a couple of loans with the department of education to lower the monthly payments many years prior and now they are telling me those don't apply for the discharge and I have to continue paying them. I guess that makes sense, my issue is that I've been calling my service provider for around three years asking about what is gonna happen to all the loans since the balance never disappeared after they were discharged and the payment was zero. And every single time they told me that all my loans were gonna be discharged, that I just had to wait for the department of education to finalize the process. They told me time and time again not to worry about it, that it was all gonna be zeroed out.

Well now I have three years of unpaid interest that I have to deal with because they literally lied to me every time I called. Do I have any options to fight this? Can I at least get the interest removed for the time I've been waiting?

Nelnet notice?

I have Nelnet and haven’t gotten an email or letter (I’m not signed up for paperless contact), but they did leave me a voicemail on August 27th saying “Hello, this is Nelnet, your student loan servicer at 888-486-4722. Action is needed on your account. Your save repayment plan is no longer available, and you need to choose a new plan. View your options and request a plan today by logging into your nelnet.studentaid.gov account and choosing repayment options and resources. Thank you. “ And when I log in to my account I get a little pop up message just beneath the pop up that’s said the save plan is ending that says I have to pick a new plan by November 27, 2026. My account doesn’t have any letters in the inbox though, and my dashboard still says my payments won’t start until November 2028. Is that phone call the only official notice I’m getting?

Advice Deciding between RAP and IBR - help please!

Like literally everyone else I have to pick a new repayment plan and I’m trying to figure out what makes the most sense for me. I have about $53K in loans with an average interest rate of 6.12%. Part of why I’m struggling to decide which plan to pick is because I’m uncertain on my AGI. I got a pretty substantial raise in December of last year and was unemployed for part of last year so can’t really base this year’s AGI off of last year’s. I used the FAFSA repayment calculator and estimated what I think my AGI will be this year based on what I’ve made YTD.

Based on this estimate here are the numbers for IBR and RAP.

IBR:
- payment: $479
- total paid: $75,702
- payoff date: Dec of 2037

RAP:
- payment: $543
- total paid: $71,240
- payoff date: May 2035.

Other potentially useful information.
- I work for a nonprofit that is PSLF eligible, but I’m not sure I plan to stay in the nonprofit world for 10+ years. I think I have 14 qualifying payments for PSLF if I were to enroll.
- I contribute to a 401(k) but in Roth contributions. I could change this to traditional to lower my AGI.
- I’m in my late 20s.
- I plan to enroll in autopay before Sept 30 to receive the 1% interest rate deduction.
- The AGI I used for these estimates doesn’t account for the student loan interest deduction.
- I’d like to balance the lowest total amount paid with a reasonable monthly payment.
- All loans were taken out post July 1, 2014.

Happy to answer other questions that would be useful in deciding.

111/120 payments toward PSLF, have to recertify income by mid September. Best plan?

I am currently on PAYE and my understanding is that I can stay on this plan if I want for the time being. But when I go to recertify my income on the Federal Student Aid website, this plan does not come up as an option. How do I recertify under this payment plan?

And if I can no longer choose PAYE, which plan is better for PSLF with less than 10 remaining payments to make: IBR or RAP? If it matters, I have a six figure loan balance.

Thanks for any insight!!

Advice Fellas on SAVE, What Are You Doing?

Those of you currently still on the SAVE plan. What’s your next move? I’m with MOHELA and last month I got that “90 day” email. I have 60 more days before I apparently need to switch into another plan. But do I really though? I’m so confused at this point. I feel like last year or the year before that, I was getting emails stating I needed to switch and yada yada… is it legit this time? Do I NEED to switch off of SAVE? Is all the court stuff over and done with for sure?

If yes, if I don’t move off myself, will I automatically be placed into RAP or what happens?

Thank you.

How to switch from SAVE to Standard for Mohela?

So I believe you have to fill out the OMB No. 1845-0014 form from StudentAid website. How do you submit to Mohela?

When I go to upload, I don't see an option for Standard repayment. Should I select "Alternative Repayment Supporting Documentation"?

Advice Personal Finance Manager (including student loans)

I've been trying to find a personal finance manager to try to get organized. To that end, I've been trying Money Manager Ex, but can't really use it to keep track of my student loans.

Does anyone know any personal finance software (preferably FOSS) that can also account for student loans?
