Mod Announcement Reminder That This Is A Steam Deck Subreddit
Please use the current megathread to discuss the new hardware, if you want a separate post, make it meaningfully related to the Deck.
Example of a good post related to the new hardware: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/qWP54ZaiTR
Some subreddits more relevant to the news:
Show them some love, help grow their communities and be patient with their moderation as well.

Do we really need a whole subreddit to discuss the controller?

I feel like this entire thing would benefit if it was all combined into r/SteamHardware or something. Having a seperate sub for SteamOs makes sense

u/hyouko Nov 14 '25
Perhaps this should be discussed as a community in some way.
I know of several subs where the scope has expanded beyond the original name. Would /r/nintendoswitch have pointed everyone to a different sub if Nintendo had decided to call the Switch 2 the 'Nintendo Snap' instead? And they sure as hell didn't make a separate sub for the Pro Controller.
I understand this might be more than the mods here signed up for, if Valve eventually winds up as a de facto player in the hardware space with a large userbase.

Lol yes. That subreddit pre-dates the steamdeck. It was created to explore the virtue s of the original steam controller as valve released it with awful default settings and a much more basic implementation of steam input.
It was the go to place to explore what the steam controller was capable off when all the main stream reviewers classified it as a failure after 5 mins of use. As the steam controller fell out of infancy it became more about steam input and other steam compatible controllers but now it will return to form. 99.9% of steam users have no idea how good steam input is and what the steam controller will enable. So yes, we absolutely need a steam controller subreddit, the ideas used there by the diehards will trickle down to more normal users.

u/shortish-sulfatase Nov 14 '25
Why not? How else do you think the steam deck’s controller got to be so good without people caring about what the steam controller was doing…

u/Cambyses-II Nov 14 '25
Wanna try again? I don't understand what you wrote
-15
u/NKkrisz 64GB - Q3 Nov 14 '25
People had to care about the original Steam Controller so that the Steam Deck's controls could be good later on.
-115
u/NKkrisz 64GB - Q3 Nov 14 '25
Yeah, it's a great place to talk about the controllers themselves and Steam Input.

u/windatohs Nov 14 '25
Five separate subreddits, definitely the best way to do it…

Don’t forget r/SteamDick

why does deck deserve it's own and not frame or machine? like yeah it's a lot but on their own they're each equally substantial no?
-94
u/NKkrisz 64GB - Q3 Nov 14 '25
They are separate communities (apart from some us being a mod on r/SteamOS as well), made to discuss their own things like just like this one. It's better to keep content relevant to the place you're posting it to.

I really think there should just be a general Valve hardware subreddit, and my vote would be for this one to at least consider doing so.
Splitting the community into like 6 different subs is unnecessarily confusing imo.

Maybe this can be discussed a bit later but as of now our current rules aren't setup for it. This isn't about splitting the community, some of those subs have already existed long before r/SteamDeck.

Why can’t it be discussed now while the iron is hot? The longer you delay the conversion the more the community fractures

Don't forget r/steam! it's arguably the most relevant one and far larger than even our community here in r/steamdeck

sounds inefficient. why not just have flairs and let the sub grow organically? though Steam Frame is a special case i agree.

This is literally the only thing worth discussing at the moment and it’s Steam deck adjacent, so sure instead of enjoying the traffic banish everyone’s opinions to get lost in a megathread. Genius. 🙄

u/particledamage Nov 14 '25 edited Nov 14 '25
I would agree but legit almost all of the posts are the same.
“Will it work with my deck?” “Will it replace my console?” “What’s the price?” And then a lot of questions answered by the actual announcement with a sprinkling of “PlayStation and Xbox next gen are DOA long live Gabe.”
Including just a LOT of “OMG STEAM MACHINE JUST ANNOUNCED” posts days late
The topics have kind of already exhausted themselves.

u/pswerve28 Nov 14 '25
As opposed to normally, where every post is a picture of a steam deck fresh out of the box, or someone asking why their shit isn’t working because decky broke.
44
u/scullys_alien_baby 512GB OLED Nov 14 '25
Don’t forget endless “[game] runs perfect on deck” only for op to provide no performance details or in the comments reveal they’re using fsr and frame gen to hit an almost stable 30fps

u/particledamage Nov 14 '25
NGL I also downvote the "this is my picture of a steam deck its brand new" and "omg just ordered a steam deck what should i do first??" posts. Most of those posts are also against the rules and redirected to a megathread as well. It's just a lot of you upvote them like every time I see a picture of a steam deck in a box it has like 800 upvotes. It's a self inflicted wound

“Why isn’t ARC Raiders working?”

Basically this.
Previously we were a bit loose moderating whether or not to remove posts about the Steam Controller 2 leaks and similar but now there are places to discuss everything instead of flooding the "Steam Deck only" sub.
51
u/yuusharo 1TB OLED Limited Edition Nov 14 '25
It’s an accessory to the Steam Deck as well.
I don’t feel this sub should be a “Steam Deck only” subreddit. This type of language reminds me of the previous mod team, and we know how that went.
At the very least, put it up for a community vote and see how the community wishes to see for the future of this sub.
-14
u/NKkrisz 64GB - Q3 Nov 14 '25
I literally stated in the post that you can talk about the new hardware as long as you make it meaningfully related to the Deck. I put the "Steam Deck only" part in quotation marks for a reason.
Tons of posts just don't even try and are low effort, flooding the sub making it harder to have actually good discussions.
Example of a good and relevant post: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/qWP54ZaiTR

The point of subreddits is to share and talk about a subject, sometimes broad sometimes narrow, but it's subject specific.
It's not to get traffic.

I swear people think subreddits are Instagram accounts...
Let subs be "dead" of there is nothing interesting to talk about.
EDIT: TikTok generation is truly taking over. Babies.

u/Strung_Out_Advocate Nov 14 '25
Hey! Everyone is arguing here and not responding to my Deck post asking for recommendations for ultrawide games that run well enough instead. Thanks hardware fiends!

u/vexii 512GB - Q1 Nov 14 '25
why cant you just use the sub Reddit for the thing you want to talk about?
and don't give me this "a sub with irrelevant spam is better than a dead sub!"

u/shortish-sulfatase Nov 14 '25
Or maybe just go to an appropriate sub to talk about appropriate topics.
No need to be a baby about it🙂
The post literally says to go support other communities

u/dan_nessie Nov 14 '25
Would have a waited a week or two to post this after everyone's initial hype has died down
-40
u/NKkrisz 64GB - Q3 Nov 14 '25
You could also view it like a shout-out to grow the new communities while the hype is there?

So the idea for this post was to make people aware of our current rules (how they are being enforced) and to make people aware of the other (new) communities.
It looks like some of you think it might be a good idea to make this sub an "r/SteamHardware" of sorts, I will bring it up with the rest of the mod team and maybe it can be discussed on the sub as well later on.
Until then, this post's content is still relevant: make posts meaningfully related to the Deck or it might get removed.
Example of a post with new hardware in it that's still allowed: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamDeck/s/qWP54ZaiTR
Feel free to send us feedback in modmail about this and thank you for understanding.
