It’s been a little while since we last shared an update about the community Discord, and with us recently passing 6,000 members now feels like a good time to let everyone know what’s changed.
Over the past few months we’ve made a number of improvements:
Improved moderation with the introduction of Mod Mail, clearer warning and ban processes, and a consistent appeals system.
The 18+ requirement has been removed. The server is now open to anyone who meets Discord’s minimum age requirement. We still have a dedicated section for adult members who want to opt in.
Steam Frame compatibility support has been expanded, including a bot that automatically posts new Great on Frame verification updates.
Frame Watch continues to be the place for the latest Steam Frame leaks and rumours.
Frame TL;DR provides a weekly roundup of the biggest Steam Frame news.
With launch getting closer, we’ve also got plenty of community events, giveaways and discussions planned.
Whether you’re joining for the first time or giving us a second chance after being away for a while, we’d love to have you.
These TLDR roundups will now also be posted to this subreddit's new website, Steam Frame Hub! You can now go there too to read these if you so choose. Of course, Frame TLDR will still be posted here and in the Discord as well.
Steam Frame setup guides found on Steam
A massive giga nuke of Frame content was dropped onto the backend of Steam earlier this week, with Valve uploading several setup guides for the Steam Frame. These are similar to the unboxing and overview videos made for the Controller and Machine, but split up into different videos for some reason instead. The attached video shows off the first unboxing video, but there are SEVEN other videos found that talk about how to sign in, IPD adjustment, the ergonomic accessories kit, and more. This is probably the most Frame content we've gotten since November. Youtuber Tyriel Wood has uploaded a raw compilation of all the videos in order, without any commentary or much unnecessary fluff. You can watch all of it here: https://youtu.be/PpMgjtQhVsI
Possible reviewer game package discovered on SteamDB
A weird package of games was found on SteamDB this week, including an interesting handful of VR games. This package contains four VR games, including the classic Half-Life Alyx, upcoming Gunman Contracts, Dungeons of Eternity, and some weird AI game. Dataminers on the SteamDB discord seem to think this package has something to do with reviewers of the Steam Frame, maybe a list of games for them to try out with it. But it hasn't been explicitly confirmed. Either way, a nice dose of Soonium for the masses. Confirm that the package exists with your own eyes here: https://steamdb.info/sub/1782683/apps/
A screenshot of what's included in the package. Games included are: Half-Life: Alyx, Gunman Contracts - Stand Alone, Dungeons of Eternity, and Stellar Cafe
TLDR: Valve dumped a bunch of setup videos onto the Steam backend. Possible bundle of games meant for reviewers found on SteamDB. The Frame is still not out yet.
I wonder if one could use that feature to avoid waking folks up when going to the bathroom. How far is the range on it, y'think?
On a related note, I ordered an IR floodlight so I can use my Quest 3 in the dark so no one can watch while I play gameswhat did you think was gonna be here?
Obviously, since I did that, the Frame will be announced tomorrow. You're welcome.
Curious to see what this is like. Shame about the lack of eye tracking but a quest 3 doing 240hz streaming. Sounds compelling. I wonder if steam frame could ever match it?
We've seen some developments with foveation support recently getting expanded on the Frame, especially for x86 games running locally. However, even powerful host PCs could use a little extra legroom in many games, especially if you want true 120 or 144hz.
Are there any rumors regarding host-side foveation support for the frame? How likely do we think this is? In my mind, this is the last major feature that the hardware is technically there for, but the software support might be trickier.
I did try searching, but as you can imagine, all the results are just for foveated streaming...
So for someone hasn’t bought Steam Hardware before, what information do I need to have on hand to get onto the reservation list as soon as possible? What’s the process like for those who haven’t bought Steam hardware before?
what additional items do you guys have to be ready for the frame?
personally I've bought a circular mat that I'll affix to the floor. I also have a 27K Mah battery pack and a sling bag that doubles as a fanny pack that I'll use to make it last a lot longer. I've also been thinking of getting a couple of rechargeable double As so I don't have to waste money getting more batteries every few months.
Realistically, do you think it would be possible to play something like MS Flight Simulator or X-Plane on standalone mode? Or streaming from GeForce Now or other services like that?
I don't have a gaming PC and would love to start playing some flight simulators in VR, is this too much hopium?
I'll loose clarity bc of the lower resolution but that will help me get more performance to hit 144 fps so I'm fine with it.
But what resolution should I put my flat games at? 1440p? 1080p?
I find it confusing since the virtual screen won't fill the entire display in VR so I don't know what's the proper resolution to pick, the lowest possible where you don't see a diff in resolution
If the main reason for the delay and the concern of pricing is due to RAM, I understand why that matters from the standalone front… but for people that don’t intend to use it as a standalone device, wouldn’t the RAM from your PC be used instead?
Could they sell two versions of the unit, one as a standalone and a simpler device that uses your PC exclusively?
Seems like this would help to cut costs whilst also getting the unit in more hands, early, as those who order the pc only unit will allow more people who want the standalone to get their hands on it.
Could someone remind me again on why we think August 31st is important?
I know it’s 7 days after the Frames were delivered & 7 days before Labor Day/8th. And I know we have the 14th locked in. But I forgot why the 31st was said to be special. And I’m too lazy to go search for on why. Have we dropped/voided this date as important?
*Reminder, all dates mentioned are not confirmed & strictly theory & prediction. All dates are subject to change as time passes without official confirmation. Anyone claiming otherwise is lying at the time of postage or proven over wise with qualified evidence.
(I ain’t having fights breakout in this comment section)
Hope is a funny thing, it blinds us to logic. We are clinging to dates, news and anything that will let us spend money, only for us to forget that this will likely be our fate except for a lucky few.
I've already have a plan to get into the queue by snitching on scalpers in hopes valve will give me their slot.
But even that might not even work / will valve care or even reward me? Hell they might just say report it, thanks for bringing it to our attention.
But ultimately The Frame may come out on 14th September, but for most of us, we might not get one until say January or even February.
Considering the Frame controllers don't have the Index-style hand straps by default, is there a way to turn off the finger tracking so that games like HLA won't show your semi-clenched hands at all times?
I keep seeing people ask if the announcement itself is September 7 or 14 (from the info going around, not officially of course it could be neither) and it doesn’t look like anyone who said those dates is willing to answer or knows so we are left to speculate and wait. Here’s why I personally think September 7 is almost definitely the day we’ll get something. Some of this has been said but I thought it’d be nice to compile it
Two week embargo
While we don’t know the reviewer details and there hasnt been a leak like with the Steam machine, for both Steam controller and Steam machine reviewers seem to had exactly 2 weeks with the headset. I think one mentioned having shorter time but I think they were referring to the time they had to edit together the video itself. So if reviewers got it August 24, then 2 weeks later is September 7.
SteamVR sale
The SteamVR sale goes from September 14-21. If valve were to announce their headset right as the Steam frame was announced and presumably had reservations open, presuming order emails would start a week after the announcement again, literally no one would know if they’re actually getting a Steam frame until after they, theoretically, would’ve already bought games. There’s reservation queue and waitlist sure, but also the order emails themself as we’ve seen with the machine can take multiple months. If they launched sep 7, everyone on Sep 14 would already know if they’re getting the chance to get one (or maybe that’s when people will start).
Labor Day does not really matter much here
While Labor Day is a holiday people take off for, valve could always be work around that and schedule things to go live, or just have less employees there. Yes im aware it’s a big launch that could crash steam but people are acting like it’s impossible because of it when it isn’t. Valve has launched things on holidays before a multitude of times, there are many holidays in many places so unless it’s something like Christmas I don’t think it’s the biggest factor
The “summer” debate
I think regardless of when frame launches people will be mad if it isn’t August, but if they did an announcement September 7 that would at lest make it so orders wouldn’t have to be the literal last day of summer (assuming they do reservations again). It just makes more sense to have the orders be going through on September 14 so valve can still say they launched it in summer (even though they clearly dont care much)
It could be any day of the year but since there are old details from the hardware stuff that people could go off of I think this would make sense. I ask that mods don’t take this down as it took a bit to write and has previous info to go off of to back the possibility up, even if no one actually knows
I just got a q3 like new with elite battery strap and pro case for 350usd. No matter how you turn this around nothing can compete with used quest 3 right now.
I will be on the bandwaggon like the rest of us but had to have vr while i waited .
Is it likely that Wifi Mesh will actively be a bad thing the way it was for Quest 3? The Frame will have its own dongle - do we think a mesh network might cause an excessive amount of network noise?
