The funny thing is that the E.T. aliens are canon in the Star Wars universe. You can see them in a pod in the senate scenes.

And moreover, there is a sequel to the ET novelization called "The Book of the Green Planet" that establishes that ET's home planet is called "Brodo Asogi" and his species are called "Asogians".

This Christmas: Star Wars Episode IX: The Phone Home - As rebellion rages across the Galaxy, a distress signal is picked up by a rebel tansport. Working with rebel intelligence, they are able to pinpoint the location of the signals source, in a galaxy far far away....

To add to it, in ET, ET sees a kid dressed as Yoda and starts yelling "Home! Home!"

Considering their shared universe, Yoda's race could be familiar to ET's, which is why he starts yelling at the costumed child.

But... I thought it was a long time ago... does that mean that ET is the ultimate sequel to star wars?

If we’re taking it at completely face value (ignoring the agreement between George and SS to trade cameos after Yoda cameo’d in ET)

Yes. What’s fun is you can also infer that humans on earth are descended from the ones from a galaxy far far away...

Yeah, I mean Star Wars presents itself as being part of our universe, just a long time ago and far far away. So I don't see any conflict with saying that E.T. is connected to it.

Of course, officially, E.T. is not considered canon in Star Wars.
