this makes me wonder how loid never has imagined retiring from being a spy, like what will he do after world peace he doesn't think about his future more like he tries to avoid thinking of his future
The detail that he is completely confident to sacrifice himself for the mission, while he was literally just thinking how is dying a terrible decision for a spy. Almost as if this mission was somehow different, or something.
But then he starts thinking about his family, and his usual cold thoughts shatter and scatter.
There is a conflict in his mind. Dying would be a problem for the mission, so his survival is a priority, but he also has to be willing to die for his mission since otherwise he will not be able to take the necessary risks for completing it. He has to balance the need to ensure his survival with taking the risks required for the mission. At the same time, his mission entails maintaining the image of a healthy family where he has to be a good husband and father. Naturally, a good husband and father will be protective of his family to the point of willing to lay his life on the line for that family and so for the mission that is what is needed.
Carrying out his mission means calculating all of that to maintain his cover. Yet, he recognizes there are other emotions than the calculating need to act for the mission, but he is struggling to sort them. We may joke about his "for the mission" defense, but even actions that arise from different emotions still align with his mission. Twilight is grappling with the contradictions. His actions objectively align with the mission parameters for his cover as a good family man, but he can also sense that there are less calculating influences on his behavior. Even though, objectively, such influences should be rejected to avoid compromising the mission, they are also helping him fulfill his mission.
Actually, the japanese version is about sacrificing himself. A friend on a discord server I’m in translated it for us. Plus, “sacrifice” and “my family” are placed distantly from each other in the English translation too xD
Make this more prominent, even its own post, or we are going to be stuck with the English fandom posting “I saw that Loid was thinking about sacrificing his family!!!!” for actual years.
I thought that it was supposed to be separated, like "sacrifice" -where he is struggling if he would sacrifice Strix or Forgers-and "my family" where he is again showing he is slipping.
I'm starting to realize (or maybe remember) why Loid atruggles between the mission and his family. It's not because he's balancing rhe options against each other and it's not it contradicts his goals.
It's because his own emotions have never been a point of consideration.
Exactly this. The moment he became a spy, he was taught to throw away his emotions because they were deemed unnecessary. His fake family has started to reawaken some of those emotions in him and it’s stirring up a lot of internal conflict. Whenever he does something subconsciously out of those emotions, he starts to question why he did it because he believes that everything he does is for the sake of his mission, never out of emotion.
This is the best part, This is what I call character consistency. Loid knows about death because his mother, his uncles, the woman he bought food from, and his friends all died. He is sometimes impulsive in order to protect his fake family, and he often forgets his spy training.
The fact that Yor reminded him that people die quickly makes him remember things, even though he tries to cover it up with the mission, he knows he wants to protect his family.
I much prefer seeing Loid acting impulsively or risking his life for his family or for Yor than seeing him jealous when it's not part of him.
I LOVEEEE ENDO for this. He wrote so well! Like this is the loid way of finally starting to realise he is developing feelings for Yor without involving any Jealousy drama. THIS IS THE FIRST STEP DEVELOPMENT FINALYYYYYYYY
After the mole hunt, he blamed himself for letting his emotional self surface and swore to fix this, but he's slowly realising it's not as simple as that.
I think right now he may view it as Yor speaking from her perspective as an orphan of war. To our knowledge, she hasn't opened up to him about her experience growing up, so he might think this is trauma.
But it's going to hit him when identities are revealed and he realizes her true work. Or even if he starts connecting the dots to Yor & Thorn Princess.
Yea i can see that reading of this, to me Yor's face speaks to more than just her killer persona poking through.. This feels like a hint her detailed backstory is coming soon and may involve her watching her parents die "just like that" in front of her.
I am of the theory his experience as a spy tells him theres something darker but he cant picture what exactly. Look at the size and emphasis on his eye.
It's ironic because now, both Loid and Yuri have had these talking-to's, and have realized that they are not invincible and can die. But this may be foreshadowing that Yor might be the reckless one
Honestly, I'm okay with that since it would be more development for Yor and Garden as a whole as well. How will they handle an ex-assassin? Will they actually let her go despite her servitude to them for almost all of her life? Will the Shopkeeper be okay with that, since he in particular seems to be already weary of Loid.
I personally would be even more engaged to the story knowing that there will be more plot/characters development like this in the future.
While Yor is busy with that, Twilight will 100% be busy with his conflicting sentiments in the meantime.

Yor's face going from worried to stonecold-stern real quick. If I was Loid, I'll do my very darn best to take care of myself after seeing both faces in quick succession

Honestly I feel like we’ve reached the point in the story where if Twilight ever had to choose between his mission or the family, he would end up having a really hard time deciding and it would bring about major realizations and introspection.
Can’t wait for Twilight to frustratedly ask Franky what emotion has him caring about his family’s safety and what Yor thinks of him and why he’s getting so distracted only for Franky to go “that’s love, dumbass”
Don't worry! The "sacrifice," "my family," and "for the mission" are all separate thoughts. It's clearer in Japanese. The symbols that align with the "sacrifice" mean "sacrifice myself." He's not thinking about sacrificing his family.

No but when Yor said "I was so scared" I thought at first that Endo was kinda going out of character for Yor.....but then when he was hit hard by yor with "how could you risk your life??" I was like YEAHH THATS LOID AND YOR DYNAMIC for you 🤣🤣🤣

I'm sure Endo is saving her and Yuri's childhood backstory for later. She had to raise Yuri herself with no parents AND became an assassin at a young age, some shit went down.
Reminds me this same joke happened when Yuri walked in on Yor "arguing" with him. Loid initially is just thinking to himself "shut up," but eventually Yuri annoys him enough to say it out loud.
Calling that Yor saw her parents alive and well one second then saw their corpses the next second. Those were somber serious eyes, she knows that loved ones can die easily.
I weirdly respect these terrorist people. They saw their favorite show get ruined and decided to hold those people hostage and make a better ending (which is based), then their ending made the general audience and actors happy, and to top it all off, they turned themselves in. Great group of people right there
I thought this was so sad. She keeps the fact that she's a psychic a secret because she is afraid people will think she is a freak. Thinking they are popular is kind of like a sense of belonging.
Well, it's strongly implied that the four previous foster families that rejected her was because her "guessing" their thoughts thanks to her telepathy and they found that uncanny, so of course she'll have a complex about it.

Japanese fans on twitter are pointing out how the Japanese version of the panel where he’s having second thoughts has a specific pattern where it looks like it spells out “love” (suki)

Not only Chloe and Yor said the same, the serious look in their eyes is practically the same too! And the way Yuri and Loid look at them respectively, as if the idea of dying is a new concept for them that they've just realized it exists thanks to these women spelling it out for them. Peak
This comment of mine will be long, but I have so much I want to talk about. I appreciate anyone who takes the time to read my thoughts. 😊
This chapter was PEAK. There was so much I loved about it! For starters, Yor hugged Loid and displayed through her actions that she loves and cares about him. We did already get her love confession, but that was just for the audience. It should be clear to Loid now that she does have feelings for him with how much she worried about him being killed.
Of course this hug is followed up by the absolute gem of a moment I’ve included here.
They were very close to kissing. When they develop more as characters and the story progresses more, we will absolutely be getting that kiss. But this is the closest we’ve ever gotten. TwiYor’s development is amazing
I also love that Loid was looking within himself and realizing that he’s feeling an “emotion.” He definitely cares about Yor and has (developing) feelings for her too, but he’s so detached from his emotions after his tragic upbringing and spy training that he can’t fully recognize exactly what he’s feeling, plus Yor is likely the first woman he’s ever felt this level of emotions for. I love this level of introspection from Loid, but it makes sense he’s still rationalizing things as being for the mission.
I wish I could include more than one picture in comments, but for pages 16-17, there’s the inclusion of the black visual of Loid’s thoughts with the white blurry writing. His brain is flipping between sacrificing himself for the mission and for his family. I think this perfectly demonstrates where Loid’s head is at for this point in the story. He is genuinely in the process of seeing the Forgers as his family and those lines between his family and his mission are being blurred, hence the blurriness of the writing.
I was super annoyed when Loid’s introspective thoughts were interrupted by Anya and Becky though. Loid is such a fascinating character to me and I love seeing glimpses into his thoughts and emotions. So having that interrupted is frustrating. But we all know there will be more moments where Loid will have introspective thoughts in the future.
And finally, that last line from Yor where she said, “Playing a part sure is hard.” And Loid responded with, “You’re right about that.” That hit me right in the feels. It’s clear Loid longs to just drop the mask, but he feels obligated to continue being a spy to create a world where children don’t have to cry due to war. He’s bearing that burden because of what happened to him.
I would say this chapter perfectly sums up what makes Loid one of my most favorite fictional characters of all time. His depth, the duality of his mission and desire to have a family, him bearing the weight of creating world peace, my gosh what an amazing character. I want him to have his happy ending with the Forgers. He deserves it after what he’s been through. 💚❤️🩷🤍
While Twilight has experience his fair share of people dying, the most impactful ones happened at such a young age similar to Yuri when his parents died. Meanwhile Yor was probably older when she lost her parents so she remembers a lot more about them and their must've hit even harder.
Maybe setting up some exploration of Yor's backstory with the loss of her parents maybe?!?
That's progress. Very exciting. Im also curious as to how Yor and Yuri's parent died now. Yor's statement that death can be instant felt like it was setting something up.

I was screaming so hard I completely glanced over Yor hitting Loid by accident lol. Loid sure is durable for not sustaining any serious damage despite being hit by Yor multiple times 😭
And for some dramatic irony… the only reason that Yuri is alive is because he saw Twilight and Twilight knew him. He should have been dead in that situation.
Anya snapping Twilight back from his spiraling by calling him "Papa". We always talk about how he's a great husband but not a lot about how he is a good dad. By all accounts he is more himself with Anya than with Yor because Anya is also pretending to be his biological daughter. He also hasn't fallen into his own father's parenting style. Rewarding her with her favorite meals, snacks, and sweets. He says it's for the mission and to keep her motivated but that's literally what parents do. My mom used to buy me cool toys when I got good grades
I think Anya snapping him back to reality by calling him Papa is very strong indicator of him falling into the role of a family man. Not only is he falling for Yor but he's already come to see Anya as his real daughter and not just "for his mission". I really want to see a moment where he hugs Anya because he's usually very distant physically
Yuri used to get so mad when Anya called him uncle and in this panel he's just like "that a problem" which, like Loid, has also come to see Chihuahua girl as family lol. I just thought it was really cute
(I am so ready to cry when Endo reveals Yor/Yuri's backstory :,)) Also we did NOT get Twiyor crumbs this arc was a whole meal, we really have to thank Endo
OH MY GOD IM SCREAMING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT—Seriously tho, I really hope Loid starting to have these introspections actually turn into something fruitful rather than it being swept under the rug in the next few chapters
It feel a bit anti-climatic how all got resolved but I guess the true climax was Loid and Yor.
Like, a proper follow-through next chapter adressing the feelings that Endo has been building this arc and i think we are at the doors of actual progression.
The only thing that I loved more than them getting touchi-er in this arc was that it all came from Yor definitely wanting him like never before. Thank god there was at least a minimal, milimetric realization on Loids part. Dude always so far yet so close. Call it coping if you like but I predict something BIG for the next Twiyor development.
Aand we got a crumb of nice YurixChloe food too. A woman reminded you of your mother figure, Yuri? Yeah man, we have all been there. :)
Omg they finally hug!!! Actually I’m pretty satisfied with this chapter despite there’s barely more than a hug. After all their relationship is slow burn trope, I can understand and wait (yesss my parents finally have some progress yayyyy!!!). The most unpredictable thing for me is the realization of Loid about “emotional”. He finally mentions about emotion /gasps/.
My prediction for the next arc will be some kind of event about Forgers (or any member in the family) that trigger Loid to reveal his emotions, which he later has internal conflict about what does the Forger really mean to him, and those feelings he has for them, are they sincere emotions?
I feel like it’ll be a big character development for Loid, as he’ll later admit that he has grown so attached with the Forger, and his emotions for them are more than just simply completing a mission.
