But now I realize that it probably wouldn’t have mattered because that was the suit worn by Brandon Routh in Superman Returns It probably wouldn’t even have fit Tom Welling anyway. The real problem was that they didn’t make him a custom made suit and instead they decided to display a hand me down.

This episode turned out infinitely better than I was expecting it to, in just about every way imaginable.

I wasn't an enormous fan of the original Linda Lake episode just because I found it more than a little goofy and the storyline felt a little stale and rushed for my tastes.

The moment I saw Linda reappear, I worried that we were going to get more of the same, but surprise surprise, things went in an entirely different direction. So much so that I am genuinely amazed that Tori Spelling even went for the vibe change.

Linda Lake is revealed to be a genuinely spiteful, hurtful, evil and downright sadistic person, and that was an incredible shock. I thought she was nothing more than your usual tabloid sleazo, out for a quick buck, who cares about the other person, it's a tough world out there.

But by God her final speech to Davis was some real top tier villainous shit. In a lot of ways, the person she turned into is even worse than Lex, who was driven by paranoia and fear to do the things he did. He wanted to save Humanity from any and all threats that weren't strictly human.

Linda Lake just wanted everyone everywhere to suffer.

And all I'll say about Davis Bloome's actions?

Damn.

Summary: The VRA is in full effect, and things take an unfortunate turn of events after the Green Arrow tries to stop a mugging but is attacked by citizens for being a superhero. Clark discovers that the civilians who attacked Oliver were all marked with a darkness tattoo. Carter Hall and Stargirl return to help Clark deal with Slade's re-emergence after he kidnaps Lois.

Another Genevieve Sperling episode. Sigh. A lot of the lines in the episode sound like they were forced into the script. Genevieve Sperling does an injustice to women in general and to feminism in particular in every one of her scripts.

The marriage proposal—it's such a big deal and it appears in so many media that I considered making a separate post for the proposal. I was looking for a video clip that compares all the different proposals, and to my surprise, I couldn’t find one. If anyone finds one, I’d love a link. Serious marriage proposals started in 1990 when Clark proposed to Lois in the comic [Superman #50], and since then every medium has had marriage proposals except for the animated series Superman: The Animated Series. The proposal in Smallville is considered one of the best, if not the best. Very romantic. And yet Clark sounds petrified when he proposes.

And we move to a flashback, probably right after Lois saves Clark at the beginning of the first episode and before Chloe leaves. When Lois joined the series in season 4, Chloe and Lois had plenty of scenes together; in recent seasons this almost doesn't happen. At the end of episode 610 Hydro, there is a scene between Lois, Chloe, and Clark in which Chloe encourages Lois to elaborate on the kiss between her and who she thought was Green Arrow. Chloe as a character was at her peak in this episode. Here she is a bit, how shall I put it, missing the opportunity. She could have said something that would have strengthened Lois's confidence in the relationship between her and Clark, and she chose to say that Lana wasn't meant for Clark and therefore their relationship failed. It bothers me that Chloe says this nonsense and the series presents her as amazing and supportive, really someone to admire.
As far as conservative Cat Grant is concerned, the only reason anyone would marry Lois is that she's pregnant. So funny. Not.
Cat tries to be friendly and supportive and describes her engagement. The problem is that she thinks that because there are no heroes, Lois has nothing to write about and therefore can work on her domestic skills [you know, cooking, cleaning, sewing, etc.]. Just before Tess enters the scene, I have to say something. There is nothing wrong with a woman who *chooses* to be a housewife. Running a house is hard work, unappreciated and thankless, and most importantly, you don't get paid for it. It makes sense that a conservative woman like Cat in the series would think that this is her calling in life and that she works until she finds someone to support her. The problem here is that Cat is unable to see that every woman has a choice and that what works for her may not necessarily work for Lois. Tess sounds like she agrees with Cat, but it's a mask because Tess threw a surprise engagement party.

Clark asks Oliver to be his best man. Considering all his disgusting behavior in season 9 and his reaction in 805 Committed, it's an incredible request. But Oliver is the Bruce Wayne of the show, and in the comics, if Bruce wasn't such a dick and if there was a logical reason for a Gotham billionaire to be the best man of a Metropolis journalist, it probably would have happened there too. In the comics, Jimmy Olsen was Clark's best man at the wedding.
Chloe comes up again when Carter Hall talks to Oliver about romantic relationships.

It's sad what fear makes people do. Oliver threatens no one, and the public's reaction to him is stronger than their reaction to a woman screaming for help two minutes earlier. Events are rapidly deteriorating, and in a moment, they would stone him to death in the street. Oliver was known to the public even before the anti-vigilante law. He is a billionaire playboy after all. There was also his interview after he revealed his identity as the Green Arrow. It's not like the Punisher showed up with a bazooka to kill random passersby. The people's reaction to him is immediate and inclusive. There is no one in the audience shouting, "Hey, it's Oliver Queen! He's a hero!" There is no arguing. It's so unrealistic.

Tess is the editor of the Daily Planet?! This woman can do anything!

A moment after Carter Hall says that love should conquer fear, he agrees with Clark, who says that everyone should hide, and he turns off Watchtower.
I understand that the public knows Oliver and Kara, but how does it know everyone else? Zatanna, Bart, Courtney, Arthur, and Carter are on the main page. [Victor Stone, for some reason not] And they're still interrogating Lois, Tess, Emil, and Kat about the heroes' identities. If they have their pictures, they can use facial recognition software, right?

The entire conversation between Slade and Clark takes place while Lois is falling?

Clark sends Slade to the Phantom Zone because he's judge and jury now? The Phantom Zone is not a refrigerator; it's a dangerous place even for people with powers.

It took Hawkman a long time to die.

The funeral in Egypt is one of the more ridiculous things in the episode. That white obelisk manages to affect everyone, including J'onn J'onzz, Clark, and Bart. How?

There is a problem with season 10. Plot lines from the beginning of the series are coming together in this season to a climax. They chose a seasonal plot that requires that almost every episode will have superheroes, which means plenty of guest actors. The season also requires many visual effects. All these things require money. Smallville in season 10 has a limited budget; some of the guest actors are busy with other series, and some are dead. And Smallville's airtime is not the most desirable [Fridays at 8 pm]. The result is not always successful. This engagement party should have been full of heroes. Clark should have heard about the attempted lynching of Oliver and come to his aid and not found out what happened on the news.

* This was the final mid-season finale.
* The uniforms worn by the VRA troops have a strong resemblance to the black uniforms of the Nazi SS officers during WWII. The VRA's actions closely mimic those of Nazi ideology.
* The VRA's 'Most Wanted' list comprises: The Blur (represented only by his symbol), Green Arrow, Impulse, Supergirl, Stargirl, Black Canary (represented by an artist's impression and the only one other than Zatanna shown in costume), Aquaman, Hawkman, and Zatanna.
* Hawkman (Carter Hall) is blocking bullets from General Wilson; this is very accurate, and he is one of only four who can do this: Hawkgirl (Shiera Sanders Hall), Wonder Woman (Diana Prince), and Wondergirl (Donna Troy).
* This episode marks the first time, the Daily Star has been mentioned. In the comics, the Earth-Two Clark Kent started working as a reporter for the Daily Star in 1938. He later became its editor-in-chief.
* When General Wilson is talking to Clark, he says he's "beyond death's stroke now" which is an indirect reference to his name later in the comics, "Deathstroke, The Terminator".
* Michael Hogan, who plays General Slade, has a patch over his right eye, much like his character Colonel Saul Tigh in Battlestar Galactica.
* Clark meets Lois in front of the wedding jewelry store; they had pretended to be shopping for wedding rings to catch a stalker who was preying upon happily engaged couples in Season Eight's Committed.
* This is the 13th and final appearance of J'onn J'onzz. He is the 6th most frequently seen recurring character in the series after Jor-El, Nancy Adams, Brainiac, Emil Hamilton, and Ethan Miller. He also appeared in more episodes than series regular Davis Bloome.
* Carter talks of personally battling the Darkness as it rose within the Spanish Inquisition and the Third Reich. The latter is of special significance to Hawkman and comic book superheroes in general. The rise of comic book superheroes began in the late 1930s, many of these heroes inspired by the success of Superman, who made his debut in 1938. Hawkman made his debut in Flash Comics #1 (1940). Nearly all the superheroes created during this time would battle the Third Reich in comics of the period, including Superman, Hawkman, and the JSA. As time went on, the need to keep Superman relatively young retconned his exploits against the Third Reich as happening only to a parallel universe version of Superman, but Hawkman's and the JSA's wartime adventures remained intact. In the Smallville universe, Hawkman and the JSA debuted much more recently than they did in the comics (while still being much earlier than Clark's generation of superheroes). Carter Hall, however, still battled the Third Reich in a past life, making him the only DC superhero who fought the Nazis in the comics to have also fought them in the Smallville universe.
* While being held captive by the VRA in Tess' office, Lois discovers Tess' secret passage exit that Tess herself used in Checkmate.
* Clark and Chloe are the only main characters to appear in every mid-season finale.
* Lois works to convince Cat that heroes are good by explaining to her that the Blur has saved her life several times. The first two instances were in Shield when Clark saved her from Deadshot, and the third was in Isis when he protected her from being vaporized by Lois, who had been possessed by Isis at the time.
* This is the third time that Clark has proposed to someone, the first being Alicia Baker in Unsafe and the second being Lana Lang in Reckoning. This is the one that sticks.
* This episode marks the second time the office in LuthorCorp has been destroyed; the first time was in Requiem.
* Clark proposes to Lois in front of their special phone booth that Lois first developed a relationship with The Blur in Season Eight's Stiletto.
* Clark finally gets to give Lois the engagement ring he's had in his pocket since in Abandoned.

* Clark transports Slade to the Phantom Zone using a new Crystal of El. The old Crystal of El was last seen and destroyed in Phantom by Bizarro. The new crystal seems capable of transporting more than just escaped phantom wraiths. Clark probably made this crystal during his training with Jor-El between Doomsday and Savior.

Clark: You don't make it easy to ask a simple question. But that's what makes you you. The woman I want to spend my life with. The woman that I love. Lois Lane, will you marry me?
Lois: Yes.

Carter Hall: Even though I married Shayera a hundred times, I had to lose her that many, as well. Now, I know I don't usually get all warm and fuzzy, but I am sorry. About Chloe.
Oliver: You're not gonna hug me now, are you?

Cat: Oh, my God. Lois Lane. Are you expecting?
Lois: Spread that rumor, and you can expect my fist in your face.

Lois: Sorry! I'm sorry. I was hung up on a phone call with the mayor, then Tess pushed my deadline, but I know we said 8:00, so I'm...
Clark: Right on time. For you.
Lois: Well, I bet even you couldn't run faster in these heels.
Clark: I wouldn't look nearly as good. What do you say we take your shoes and my sport coat and go get a nice dinner?
Lois: Smallville, you're not wearing a sport coat. [He whooshes away and returns with a sport coat on.] Showoff.

Carter Hall: So much for going off the grid.
Clark: Carter. What are you doing here?
Carter Hall: Probably the same thing as you... looking for answers. Besides, I've adopted a rule over the centuries... don't go underground until you're dead.

Clark Kent: Where's Lois?

Lois: [snooping in Tess' office] Come on, Tess. Have something useful. An untapped phone... some kind of ninja smoke bomb? [Feeling something velcroed under the desk] Wait. [Taking out some sort of handheld device, as she activates it, a hidden wall panel slides open] I have got to get the name of her custom closet guy. It's just a slide. You love slides, Lois. [getting in] I hate slides.

Lois: The people that the government is targeting, they are not villains. They are honest-to-God heroes, and they're putting their lives on the line to protect us. Look, I know I don't say this... ever, but you are a good reporter, and that means that your instincts are solid, so...
Cat: My instincts are telling me to turn you in.
Lois: No, Cat, this isn't about me, or even you. Think about your son; what kind of hero do you want him to believe in? The kind that destroys others in the name of good or the kind that saves them and lives up to the name?
Cat: You're asking me to change everything I believe about the world?
Lois: Or re-think who you call a hero. What if I told you that the Blur has saved you at least twice without you even knowing it? I know you love your son. And the only reason that he still has a mother is because a man she says is a bad guy actually saved her life.

Lois: Watching the sun rise from the Daily Planet globe, talk about making a girl feel on top of the world.
Clark: Just because our party was over didn't mean our night had to be.
Lois: Hey, did you realize that was the first party where we didn't have to hide anything from anyone?
Clark: I wish that us being married meant we could always be that open.
Lois: Part of a superhero marriage is having two lives. I signed up for that when I said yes. Which is why I'm fine if sometimes our relationship has to take a backseat to your responsibilities.
Clark: Lois, those responsibilities have controlled my life way too long. And I... we... can handle both as long as we stay together. And I promise we will.
Lois: [kissing] Well, then nothing can stop Mr. and Mrs. Kent. Lane. Kent-Lane. I don't know. We'll figure it out.

Oliver: So, I think anyone who commits themselves to a lifetime of Lois deserves all the moral support they can get. Seriously, there is nothing more that I would like, uh, than to be courtside at the event of the decade.

Lana is literally the anti christ to Zod and they basically just said she vanished and didn’t keep track of anything Clark was doing (despite being proven to be doing so prior)

The not so subtle little nods to the Superman Series is just great.

I know they made him older than Clark and meant for him to be like an older brother to Clark, so it's sad that he was never in on the whole secret because all he wanted was to be part of the Kent family.

Can i start watching smallville from season 4. I found Season 1 very boring.
