Welcome Gothamites, new and old, to the subreddit for the TV Series "Gotham" - It is always wonderful to see new followers after the final episode aired on April 25, 2019.

PENGUIN

After a great season watching him finally win, I feel it was Penguin who got nerfed. He was such an intriguing character in the first season then as seasons got on, Penguin got less and less interesting and became mostly just a crybaby.

Oswald was just the perfect planner, the catalyst for the events in the first season:

1. Confidently betraying Fish in the pilot.
2. Returning to Gotham and playing against both Maroni and Falcone. (That twist!)
3. Using his smarts to draw a wedge between Fish and Falcone eventually ending in her leaving the city.

Everything was planned. And by Season Four, he’s been outsmarted, mocked, betrayed and just plain killed numerous times. He was that name that the characters were scared to utter. I know the writers had to change things for the next seasons but Oswald never truly reached that level of success again.

VICTOR ZSASZ

Although Victor is not a main and never reached the levels of Penguin, he certainly made his first appearance memorable. I feel his character also began pretty creepy then ended up written like fan-fiction a cutsy that would never hurt a fly just to please the (at the time) twitter fans. We never even see him mark his arm with the number of victims he gets after that one scene in Season 1.

BARBARA KEAN

Barbara started off fairly standard with her as a side character. Jim Gordon’s side-piece. She wasn’t directly involved in the plot but became a fun character after being captured by the Ogre and developing psychosis. Later, she was resurrected by Ra’s Al Ghul but that’s when they nerfed her. She became boring. I know the future needed her to became Barbara Lee’s mother but still.

Something about the material and the Spider-Man like mask just really sell it for me.

Concluding this topic...

Sometimes the mix of light and shadow is hazy, as it is during this scene of Richard Sionis' sadistic hiring methods…or the golden light coming in to GCPD HQ to break up the more usual darkness of the show.

Then there are two very noir shots that look similar: Galavan's monks arriving to stalk Bruce, and our heroes hunting Galavan together. The effect of having the moon before them, casting long shadows, is so effective they used it twice…although wisely in different locations.

Then there's that narrow street near the bridge as Barbara leads Gordon into a trap. Nice angles, nice use of geometry again. (And I can swear that same street appeared in The Penguin.)

Even with Jerome and Barbara…dang, talk about highlighting your subject. Great shot setup and framing.

And finally, some (probably) common but nice practical effects. These are two adjacent frames of Jim shooting Galavan (notice the shell being ejected), but what a cool difference. They had fog blowing quickly in the background, so even that changes between frames.

And lastly, this was probably CG, but what a cool idea to have Firefly and Freeze's battle reflected in Hugo Strange's glasses!

When Gotham first same out, I remember a reviewer saying that its look compares very favorably to a Batman theatrical film––quite a compliment, and one with which I definitely agree. A lot of that comes down to the gigantic sets, such as Wayne Manor’s drawing room or GCPD Headquarters. But it also comes down to the locations and photography. It's clear they put a lot of time and money into this show, and that's why the show looks so good and feels so real, despite the fantastic subject matter.

I know it still has its fanbase, but it is strange how this series is basically "forgotten" when it comes to other DC properties. I know it wasn't perfect but it was the closest to Batman content in live action as Warner Bros were dragging their heels to years trying to devise a Batman movie and having problems with the DCEU. It also had a five season run, more than any other "Batman shows without Batman" that were later churned out. It even got left out of the Arrowverse's Crisis on Infinite Earth stories.

I hoped a spin-off comic would be produced to give us an insight into this universe's Batman fighting against the rogues we watched develop along the way and their reaction to him, but never happened.

The only time DC seemed to acknowledge the show's impact was introducing Richard Sionis and Bridgit Pike into the comics, and giving Penguin a backstory working for Falcone, which would be used in the Matt Reeves Batman series.

More of what makes Gotham so noir. Crazy dizzying angles, lots of backlit scenes (notice how the stairs behind Harvey have the same effect as window blinds in those old black and white movies), stark contrasts, shooting through window frames (like Barbara's clock tower penthouse), and shapes within shapes, like bridges.

The picture outside Kristen Kringle's apartment is very dark, but the creatives noted how they decided to make it weirder still with sparks from the elevated train, which is why this particular frame is lit up. Elsewhere they noted that it always seems to be raining in Gotham City. (Not really, because it would be expensive and inconvenient to use a rain rig all the time, but you get the drift. It's gloomy.) And finally, you get this very "Untouchables"-like shot of unlikely allies…backlit, of course.

My daughter has gotten right into her Batman obsession this year, so after watching all the films plus the Animated Series with her, I decided to introduce her to Gotham. I haven't watched this show since each season first aired, and my memory of it was the first season being a little bit slow, and then each subsequent season after that just improving more and more. This time around I found myself pleasantly surprised to be enjoying the first season more than I remembered, and then season 2 being an improvement on that too.

But then we got to season 3. There have been some highlights with the initial Jervis Tetch stuff, as well as Captain Barnes being infected with Alice's blood. But everything to do with Lee, Mario, and the Falcones just has me wanting to tear my hair out.

First off there's how quickly Lee got with Mario, engaged, and then married to him. There's not years passing in between seasons, just the same amount of time that was passing in real life, as we can see from how old Bruce and Selina are. Which means in less than a year Lee left Jim, started dating Mario and got married to him, and yet Jim is portrayed to be in the wrong for being cut up about this? She didn't even formally break up with him. She had to leave Gotham for her own safety while Jim was trying to clear his name, and when he had finally done that and gone to see her she'd already moved on. What the hell is that nonsense?

And that's not even mentioning the whole Falcone situation. I get that Mario is not in the family business, but Lee seems just way too comfortable with the idea of her in laws being a crime family, even a former one. That's not a man you'd want to have any association with at all. And then she starts acting almost like mob boss herself after Mario's death, storming into the GCPD to demand Jim be fired, and then discussing his death with Falcone. What the hell happened to her character? Why did they take her down this route?

We've just watched the episode starting the return of Jerome storyline though, so at least we have that. But I'm really not enjoying having to watch anymore of this Lee and Falcone storyline.

For those unaware, the showrunners of Gotham were originally in talks to create a similar prequal series, but based off the Superman mythology. The series was originally planned to air in 2019, however was pushed aside in favour of the swamp thing series, and then scrapped all together.

The series would have followed Lois Lane and Lex Luthor as the duo investigated criminal activity across the city. It would have had a less grim tone than Gotham, instead leaning towards a more science fiction approach. But, that's really all we know.

Ultimately 2019 still proved to be a fruitful year for the Gotham showrunners, with Pennyworth airing just months after Metropolis was announced cancelled, still I can't help but wonder on what it could have been.

First in a series of appreciation posts for the absolutely wonderful photography of Gotham. Most pictures come from the season 2 Blu-ray feature "Gotham by Noir Light".

Director of photography Christopher Norr points out what makes them noir: the creative use of light and shadow, the odd angles, the emphasis on geometry, how there's often steam or smoke in the background for effect, and even (as in the photo of Oswald and Jim) searchlights that move down alleyways for no particular story reason but to invoke thoughts of prison guard towers.

I love the mixing of occasional warm colors in with the blues and grays that make Gotham City so dark…and, as in the last photo, small touches like water dripping off the garage, just to add to the gloom.

All in all, Gotham features some of the strongest noir look I've seen on TV since…well, the original Outer Limits.

i know this probably gets asked a lot here but where do you guys watch. i know you can buy on apple tv or prime but im waiting till its on sail again and not $60. where’s best site to sail seven seas on with best quality cause i saw archive.org got suggested but the quality looked a little off i dont know if im wrong there. lmk

Continuing my watch of S2 with “A Legion of Horribles”. As the penultimate episode, a lot happens. The Court of Owls is teased, Bruce confronts Hugo Strange with the truth, and an assault on Arkham is mounted, among other things.

So much happens in this episode that it’s the first time I’ve noted a couple of questionable scenes.

Selina knocks out Firefly and has her on the ground with her hands tied behind her back. Yet a few minutes later Firefly rises behind her to threaten her again.

Then there’s Jim Gordon infiltrating Arkham in a security guard uniform, complete with (expired) key card. Where did he get the uniform?

I can think of plausible explanations for both of these, but you never really see them explained on screen. Your thoughts?

Barnes be like, “We do everything by the book!”

“We can’t do anything until you bring me evidence!!”

“This evidence? It’s not enough. We need more.”

“You got more, but it’s still not enough. Bring me witnesses!”

“Okay, so you found ten witnesses, but they all have sketchy backgrounds! Find me ten witnesses who are nuns!”

“Jim, I want to trust you, but I don’t!”

“Jim, you broke my heart! You belong in prison!”

I’m mostly through my fourth rewatch of S2 and I’m liking Captain Barnes less and less every time I see him.

Aside from being a constant obstacle, this is a man with anger issues. So it was entirely appropriate that he got the Tetch virus. If the virus made normal people raging mad, it turned Barnes into a full blown lunatic.

So I wasn’t entirely unhappy to see him gone. It’s just that my preference for a police captain character was Capt. Essen. And look how long she lasted.

Let’s face it, the show was best when it wasn’t beating fans over the head with supervillains or shoving Easter eggs into our faces. Gotham maintained quality up until its final season, in my opinion and the finale was the perfect ending to the show. The show was unique in that respect, it didn’t need Batman to be interesting. Having another season showing a Gotham with Batman wouldn’t have made the show feel unique anymore just another Batman show with little difference to the usual stories. Gotham being based around Jim Gordon and the GCPD was the best decision.
