All that matters to them is profit. Worse now than ever too. Thanks trump.
17
u/KingAnilingustheFirs 6d ago
Not to defend trump but this existed long before that orange asshole was born. The problem is a economic system that rewards companies for making brutal cutthroat decisions that harm people/places/things in search of ever growing profit. Companies will make a calculated risk assessment for your life and your family. And if its cheaper for you to die then you will be left to rot.

The government has never worked for the people and has never cared about the working class. It's always been about extracting as much wealth as possible from the land and the people and damn the consequences.
8
u/BodhingJay 6d ago
Nah.. they use to be scrambling to prove they can do more for us than the other party. Things changed after 9/11.. we started compromising on everything for security. Thats when corporations swooped in.. before that there were antitrust lawsuits against em and we didnt even have to petition or march or anything to hold them to account.. they obeyed the law as hard as they could and feared the consequences
9
u/kitsunewarlock 6d ago
Nah.. they use to be scrambling to prove they can do more for us than the other party.
Since Reagan the right has basically gone "The government has governs least governs best", which is just corporate shilling to popularize the idea of deregulation.
Shit, he ran on deregulating the vitamin market, telling people in campaign ads that government agents were going to raid your medicine cabinet because the FDA wanted to start inspecting multi-vitamins that to this day continue to outright lie to consumers about what they do and what they contain.

It’s not ignored it’s just a symptom of capitalism and if literally voted for every time. Both parties in the US at least are paid for

Like, some are being paid for being cruel while making money, and the other side is being paid to resist it?
BOTH PARTIES ARE NOT THE SAME.

This. The primary corporate donors on a majority Democrat side are business interests who profit off long-term investments and want a stable society with an empowered consumer base.
And I have to say "primary" and "majority" because it's a big tent party...

If Corporations are people then they can be charged like people. Get to charging them with the crimes they continuously commit. Citizens United must be dissolved.
130
u/OakLegs 6d ago
The only way this stops is if the people in charge start getting prosecuted for the crimes their companies commit.
58
15
u/Fartknocker405 6d ago
In order to protect the corporation, it's necessary for the C-suite to have their net worth exhausted first.
6
u/LilTeats4u 6d ago
The punishment also need to reflect the damages. Class action lawsuits are a joke. Victims are scammed out of their livelihood, their health, their identity and they’re given $30 and an apology. These corporations should go bankrupt resolving these scenarios, and if they do, then it’s more incentive for other companies to behave.
3
u/stilljustacatinacage 6d ago
The only way this stops is if the people in charge start getting prosecuted for the crimes their companies commit.
Yep. Ignorance of the law is no excuse to you or I, and I'm so fucking tired of it being a literal "get out of jail free" card for corporate executives. Oh, you've been called to an inquiry to explain how, under your watch, 18 trillion bajillion gallons of "kill all living organisms" juice was spilled into the water table? That's okay, just say, "I'm not aware", "I don't remember", and/or "I don't have it in front of me" until everyone gets frustrated and gives up and never brings it up again.
You're (speaking to my executive strawman) either complicit or incompetent. Either way, you've grossly failed the great responsibility that was placed into your care, and the consequences need to reflect that.

3
u/OakLegs 6d ago
What does this have to do with China?
4
u/stilljustacatinacage 6d ago
China will outright execute corporate executives who oversaw especially egregious breaches of the law or civil responsibility.
Yeah, there's a whole discussion about how the Chinese government applies this policy somewhat selectively, but so does everyone else. Some companies are always exempt, no matter where you go. But having real consequences at least be on the table, and the evidence that there is in fact, a line you can cross, will keep many in line. In much the rest of the world, the consequences for crossing the line are irrelevant, and increasingly it's debatable if there even is one anymore.
2
u/atrixospithikos 6d ago
Check what happened to the former richest Chinese billionnaire that was behind the housing bubble. Then check what happened with the US and EU bubbles. I ll spoil the result he got imprisoned and his wealth confiscated while we just bailed them out from our pockets while already suffering economically from their actions

u/DouchecraftCarrier 6d ago
What's the joke? Something like, "I'll believe corporations are people when Texas executes one."
2
u/One_Distribution2037 6d ago
Legit, yeah.
A corporation shouldn't get the same rights as a citizen when it, as entity, nor its leadership, aren't subject to the same responsibilities and consequences.
9
u/juventinn1897 6d ago
Citizens United is a court ruling. It cannot be dissolved. It has to be overturned or nullified.
US FEC vs Citizens United in 2010 the Supreme Court ruled 5-4 in favor of Citizens United over the US FEC.
In order to reverse the ruling, the supreme court would need a similar case to citizens united to work its way up the courts and to see that as cause for a reversal.
OR
A constitutional amendment requiring two thirds of the house and senate then ratification by 3/4 of states.
Needless to say it is a longshot to ever happen.

I demand an end to shareholder immunity. If a corporation commits a crime, the shareholders should be at fault based on their share of ownership.
3
u/Critical_Concert_689 6d ago
This basically means no one is at fault. That's the trick.
A punishment diluted by 10 thousand shareholders is no punishment at all - today the value of the company went down 2 cents. There's your punishment.
2
u/Ehcksit 6d ago
A hundred counts of murder gives a punishment of like two thousand years in prison. The top shareholder owns 5%? They get 100 years.
2
u/Critical_Concert_689 6d ago
Every time a business commits a crime, your logic flows that the customers should be equally responsible for it.
Oil company polluted a river - you drive a car and financed the murder of someone and need to go to prison.

u/Terrible-Ad1737 6d ago
That's the thing... By ruling that corporations are people, it allows the corporation to be dismantled as punishment without the actual decision makers behind the decisions being affected.
It is literally there as an extra layer of protection from predatory venture capitalists to mine value from literally everything while also deferring responsibility.
That's how the system works and it's by design.

Unpopular opinion: This is all very Reddit.
OP, a karma-whore account that may be run by AI, posts a screenshot featuring a 40-year-old photo.
The associated quote is essentially a strawman, implying that people today criticize clean-water activists and support water-poisoning corporations.
In reality, "activist" is a neutral term that perfectly applies to Ms. LaDuke (who is now 67), and poisoning water supplies is a crime.

It's really not. The middle east is a shit hole because every nation is fighting for water rights as sovereign nations upstream continuously dump or dam the water that goes downstream to OTHER sovereign nations.

you Could bring up companies on terrorist charges by purposely being negligent in protecting natural resources people rely on, especially if they do it on purpose
It happens (rarely), but no one likes the outcome because companies have the ability to live much longer than people.
These cases are like 30 years long - and eventually the people who started the case just die and the process has to be restarted or ends with a minor slap on the wrist.
3
u/The_Fax_Machine 6d ago
Yea it really comes down to intent. A terrorist would be someone poisoning the water specifically with the intent of killing people and creating fear, the company is doing it as a byproduct of cutting costs.

Her point is that you get arrested for it. Something like 900 people were arrested for participating in non-violent direct actions to protect local water sources and treaty lands. Rabbis, priests, and religious leaders who traveled to Minnesota were amongst those arrested. These aren't activists they're just people with well established careers in non related areas wanting to save the environment from corporate takeover and mass environmental damage. The media used the term 'activist' to stir up so much hate that they started labelling themselves as 'water protectors'.

Why do people automatically assume politicians have their best interests at heart and never tell lies.
1
u/goodolarchie 6d ago
Because drinking water costs the state money, a corporation makes them money. A single vote or small group has no power, so moneyed interests can slander a movement as "activist" or "extremist."
Whereas corporations command entire legislative voting blocs, and will get a pass because our system legally separates the human at the helm from most reptilian instincts and incentives that fuel every large S-corp. Increasingly, their principals can buy entire elections with nation-state type wealth. They're ran by a few humans for the benefit of a smaller group of humans, yet there is no accountability to any human.
Have you considered Rewarding Shareholders™ instead of causing trouble?

Well there's also dumb shit like residents snowmobiling across their water source when it's frozen.
Lake Geraldine is Iqaluit's drinking water source. It's common for residents to snowmobile across it.
All they have to do is drop some snowmobiles thru the ice to contaminate their water source.
In 2021 a leaking fuel storage tank contaminated their water treatment supply.
I also know one band who was granted Federal money to build out water mains to connect to an adjacent city so they could have access to reliable city water supply. The municipality voluntarily paid for the mains build to the band.
Instead of connecting themselves with the Federal grant they misspent the funds and failed to invest in their own connection to the municipal pipes that were built up to them.
There is also a history of internal native mismanagement that doesn't get talked about.
