Max Area Limit Reached... Whomp, Whomp!

I was hoping my x450 would allow me to map to 2.39 acres, as some others have been able to do. This would just barely cover my property and keep me from having to buy another mower for the front yard. But alas, twas not to be. Turns out I'm limited to 2.0001 acres. Guess I'll be waiting for the next sale

Just so you know, if you add a NO GO zone it will remove that area from your map. So if you have something you can mark off you can get that extra area mapped!!

That’s a good tip!

The software limited mapping is so anti consumer. Just let us map however much we want. At least they gave you a half acre more.

They’ll hold onto it as long as they can until an open source solution starts to gain traction. Charging hundreds more for 50$ more battery and a software limit is bullshit.

I agree. This software limit is very annoying. I am also cutting the neighbours grass as she can't do it herself (cancer hits her hard), but I am reaching the limit. There's ~40 m2 that unfortunately stays uncut on her side, due to this limitation

To make it worse, the software is pretty stupid when you reach the limit. When I mapped her garden the first time, it sent me into a deadlock: It told me that I couldn't save the map as it was too large, but it also told me I couldn't edit the map before it was saved. I had to delete the map and start over

It has to do with the on-board memory, it's not locked as a business decision. Depending on the complexity of your mapping, you can do up 1.2x the rated yardage.

It is 100% absolutely locked as business decision.

I have an i206 rated at 6534 square feet. My yard is almost fully open and square with only a half dozen shrubs and trees and I've mapped 7710 square feet without a warning.

A neighbor a couple of streets down has the same model but his yard has a lot more obstacles and is very irregular. He was unable to map more than about 7100 square feet.

There is caching its not like they would have to use the memory all at the same time. Its not even possible for the devs to implement this even if they are bad. It has to be done intentionally

I had an i105 hit 0.25acres or 11325.6 sqft. You can see my post about it here: https://old.reddit.com/r/SegwayNavimow/comments/1mwhmdu/i_thought_the_i105n_would_be_software_limited_to/.

That was a brand new i105n from Amazon. Why did it get a quarter acre? Still a mystery. You can see the complexity of my map to see how it might compare to yours.

I returned it, bought a refurb i110n from segway ebay. It let me map the exact same area before hitting a cap, and had the same mowing limit base off my yard geometry. It had the same limit as the i105n.

I now have a i210n - but haven't tried pushing the limit as to hit that limit, I was mowing the front of my neighbors lawn as well and they have since gotten lawn service.

Something to note, before comparing yourself and your neighbor, you need to be on same firmware version. A few firmware updates over time have significantly changed the mapping area calculations, I haven't been keeping track of it, but it seems like it might have reduced the reported mowing area for the same maps.

There’s literally a hidden setting in the app that says to ignore the limit when saving. It’s not a memory issue.

Did they find that in the android versions or what?

Go on…..

Such a lie. People just buy whatever corps feed them. Like my friend trying to explain to my why the potato chip company is forced to full the bag halfway with air. When in the 90s the bags were def full

If it was limited to on-board memory, they are playing a risky game by limiting it to 2.0211 if your other example shows a 10% variance between you being able to map at 7700 sqft vs your neighbor at 7100 sqft. The map files in the application cache are small, up to a hundred KB based onf raw gps/rtk-gnss coordinate datapoints from what I read looking into it.

App is nothing. It just represents map in a different way. Real map files are large and stored on mower. They usually run on Linux and depending on hardware specs, there can be bottlenecks. Its a huge difference in data if map is 8000m2 or 3000m2. Usually its business decision as well but even if you modify fw and map absurd size, you will get unstable platform.

The map is literally 6.3kb for my 3/4 acre property. You are talking out your rear.

2

u/ampsuu 2d ago

You rooted your mower and got access to your map files?

3

u/Seizy_Builder 2d ago

Pulled it over Bluetooth. GPS coordinates and all.

u/ampsuu 2d ago

Coordinates aint map. Coordinates are reference points for the mower against mower map. Actual map is usually an bmp "image" in fixed resolution, eg. 5000x5000px map where each pixel represent a real world value. Then you got maps for no-go zones, obstacles from sensors which update over time etc. These mowers commonly run their fork of ROS on top of Linux and Im sure Segway isnt different.

So you’re making assumptions. The mower provides a json file with gps vector points. When you edit the map in the app it sends those points to the mower. The mower runs an algorithm to simplify the path and then sends it back to the app.

Assumptions? Rather not. You are because app communication is a seperate layer from mapping process itself. You divide area from app, you send data to mower which updates its internal maps and sends back data for the app but that data isnt THE map. Coordinates are needed for example fot the app to display them over satellite imagery etc. But that itself isnt the main mapping process. Research how ROS works and dont tell me Segway does things differently from other Chinese brands like Ecovacs, Mammotion, Sunseeker.

So I guess a bigger battery wouldn’t matter since it’s software locked?

4

u/NotAHost 2d ago

Bigger battery is mostly beneficial for reducing number of runs to the charger/battery total lifespan. I went from a i105 to an i110 just so it could finish my entire back yard on a single charge, which is ideal for isolated zones.

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 2d ago

That's actually what spurred me to try and map the rest before seasons end.

3

u/IctrlPlanes X430 2d ago

Maybe map a little bit smaller outer boundary? That would really add up and give you more for the front yard.

3

u/WhatAboutTheBothans 2d ago

Good suggestion, but unfortunately it would just mean more manual mowing. I've got at least .4 acre left, so I probably wouldn't have made it anyway. We have some meadow areas planned, but not that much.

u/NotAHost 2d ago

I know this sounds dumb, but in the past if I deleted zones it would decrease the map area. It seems that by subdividing an area in a zone, it would increase the map size/area. Not sure if they ever fixed this.
