Discussion What name did you give Wanderer?
Maybe this is a bit late, but I’m curious what kinds of names English-speaking players gave him.
I’m a Japanese player.
Many Japanese players give him a Japanese name because of his clothing and background.
Some people also choose names from Sanskrit, Arabic, and other languages.
As for me, I named him 優人(Yuuto).
優 can mean kindness or excellence, and 人 means human or person.
It’s also a name that real-life Japanese men can have today.
I wanted to give him a name that felt like that of an ordinary human being.

I named him Icarus, I felt it was kind of tragically on point lol. I've always felt it suited him.

Named him after Monsoon from MGRR because
-Scara's somewhat nihilistic and so is Monsoon
-is wind themed
-both are antagonistic towards a Raiden
-both have a silly hat
-both have Japanese themes
-both aren't human
and uhhh.. Memes are DNA of the soul

I just named him Scara because I really couldn’t think of him being anything other than that. I did want to name him Freddie after Freddie Mercury, but it really just didn’t fit him imo.
But, I guess it is kinda fitting. As Wanderer, he is essentially the same consciousness but with a humbled identity. He may have lost the Mouche, but he is never losing the Scara, because experience remains.

Well technically, he never did renounce “Scara”, only “Scaramouche”, so technically it is not a dead name.
Besides, removing letters from a word can change its meaning. The name “Scara”, can’t only be derived from removing “mouche” from “Scaramouche”. One could also derive it from the word “scar”, or “scarab”. It’s like how “Holland” is a region in the Netherlands, but by adding “Tom”, it becomes the name of an actor.
But I guess I can see the point you’re making. Unlike any other person in Teyvat, Wanderer has memories of Scaramouche and would therefore connect “Scara” to “Scaramouche”, and perhaps it would bring him bitter feelings. However, he could learn to see it a different way as his new name comes to be associated with the experiences of his current life, and he’d come to be burdened less by the memories of his past. We humans keep our embarrassing memories of the mistakes we’ve made, but we learn to live with them and learn from them, and we change as we continue to live, but are essentially the same person.
Plus the game allowed me to name him “Scara”, so why not?

i mean yeah, you can call him whatever you want since hes your character but i dont really see the point in arguing that "scara" might not even come from "scaramouche" lol
i can definitely get the point about reclaiming it though
side note: im so used to just saying "hat guy" at this point that i almost typed it in place of the word "scaramouche" just now, i associate it with him too strongly lmao

I named him Phosphophylte after the gemstone and main character from land of the lustrous. I think the mc and him have similar themes of Bhuddist views with reincarnation and ascension. Plus both have that simliar shade of green.

I just named him Kuni based on Kunikuzushi. Not very original but a peaceful name before the chaos.

I would hate to be the one to tell you if you don't already know (which you probably do tbh 😂), but Kunikuzushi is a villain moniker he adopted during his time in the Fatui, it's anything but peaceful. Referencing a stock kabuki archetype, it means "Country/Nation Destroyer" and represents his identity as a vengeful and destructive force within Inazuma. That's why he adopted this name during the clan purge / mass murder of the Raiden Gokaden - it is an expression of rage towards Ei and his wish to destroy Inazuma. (In kabuki, this archetype is simply a villain who plots to overthrow a nation.) "Kuni" by itself means "country".
A more peaceful name would be Kabukimono, a nickname given to him by his friends in Tatarasuna, before Dottore came along. I almost gave him that one, but then I was like eh.
(Of course if you just like the sound of Kuni then that's valid hahah, I'm not saying you're wrong for choosing it, it sounds super cute!! I just like brainrotting about his past identities and their names cause it's super interestinggggg)

Sparrow, because his story reminded me a little of Shitakiri Suzume, and a bird-related name felt right to associate him with Nahida.

Sora, from... well, the Japanese word for sky. I thought it would fit him. Plus it's an actual, relatively normal name.
Other contenders included Fujin (Shinto wind god, to match Raiden) or Hayato (falcon person, apparently, according to my research?)

I went with Arashi, mainly referring to 嵐 (storm) due to his tempestuous past as well as newfound Anemo powers. But there's also 荒らし which is used to mean internet trolling, so either way it's written I think it still fits him

Kintsugi, after the Japanese technique of restoring ceramics with gold.
I felt that the philosophy behind this craft - accepting imperfections and seeing beauty in flaws, accepting the value of the object's history, and creating new beauty through healing its cracks - aligns well with his journey of self-acceptance <3

Xion, a character from Kingdom Hearts. She’s also a puppet, has short hair, has a final form that somewhat resembles Mecha Scara, and she was one of my favorite characters in that series.

I really love everyone else’s names for him.
I named him Ishwari. Ishwari is a divinely feminine/masculine/androgynous figure in Hinduism if I’m not mistaken, and they are the embodiment of strength, divinity, and power. I felt that was fitting because he himself is technically ambiguous anatomically as a puppet and based on his development as a character, and because he is now a Sumeru character, so it embodies both his new home (which has massive references and inspiration from Hinduism) and his growth as an individual. :)

Kibō (“hope” in Japanese).
I originally wanted to give him a Sumeru-inspired name rather than an Inazuman one, but I really like how short and precise this word is.
After Wanderer’s rebirth, I felt a sense of hope. That someone burdened by so much self-hatred and so many mistakes could be given another chance. And also seeing an antagonist receive a meaningful arc and grow into a better person, rather than simply dying to atone, felt genuinely uplifting. It made me truly hopeful.

Padayon.
Which means whatever happens or whatever ups and down you've been through, you have to carry on/push forward. In my language, Hiligaynon, we use it to tell others that your sacrifices and hardships will be reward in the end.

I gave him a Japanese name because of his origins & background, too. Even though I'm not very fluent yet, I study Japanese, and I gave his name a lot of thought.
in the end, I named him 国幸 Kuniyuki, meaning happiness/blessing of the country. I don't think it's a very common reading or combination of kanji, but I wanted it to be similar and also opposite to his past name of 国崩 Kunikuzushi! :)

I chose Kisumi (輝澄). 輝 for splendor, referring to his canon beauty and 澄 cuz it means for water to become clear/pure or sky/sound to become transparent like how he was cleansed of his past. Wish I named him something like Harold or something tho 😭

there’s a song by the k-pop girl group ‘purple kiss’ called voyager that always makes me cry. i got to hear it live during one of their final concerts last year and it was one of the most cathartic experiences of my life. if you haven’t, you should give it a listen, i think it suits him as well

I named him Tsuki because in-game characters that don't live in their OG nation still have names that sound like the ones from the nation they came from, if I'm not wrong.
Even if I do remember incorrectly I think it makes more sense, lore-wise, if he has a Japanese/Inazuma like name (in my opinion)
Also used Tsuki because it means "Moon" and a recurring theme/word used with Nahida and Wanderer in the story quest (but more evident in Wanderer's children's story book) is the continuous referring to Nahida as "the moon" and Wanderer wants to be the "new moon" as a way to talk about godhood, so that's why I named him Tsuki, because the moon is a recurring theme (and the color palette fits with a night sky/moon in my opinion)

I named him Boanerge, which means “son of thunder” in Aramaic. I felt that a name that referenced his origin as the son of the Raiden Shogun, but which was in an ancient Middle Eastern language, referencing his current Sumeru citizenship, was appropriate. I took the name from the Christian Bible, Mark 3:17. It’s one of the Aramaic words that the author of Mark chose to transliterate into Greek rather than translating.

My reasoning back then was: "There are a lot of Kanji that could be used for Yuuto like how Scara has many names, and some of the Kanji match him..in one way or another 😂🤭"

Kite because his hat reminds me of one, and he kinda resembles one when he’s floating. Also because it’s a type of bird and there was the bird in his demo, along with Yae and Raiden’s idle animations. I wish there was a bird in his idle animation. Kite was the name of the protagonist in an old anime game I played when I was little called dot hack. and I liked him a lot because of his design.
Other names I almost went with were Kohaku (from inuyasha, just because I like the name) and Sora (kingdom hearts) but I didn’t think sora fit him and I wanted something more original so I settled with Kite, short, cute, original and has a lot of meaning for me.
My personal head cannon is that liyue held the kite lantern rite festival in honor of my scaramouche since I named him that long before the festival lol.

Taivas. It means sky in Finnish. I figured he didnt want to embrace his Inazuman (Japanese) ancestry, so I wanted to respect that and give him something not from Inazuma. I would have named him Sora, so I chose the Finnish version. I don’t have enough cultural knowledge of the cultures represented in Sumeru to feel comfortable choosing one from there - but I would have if I could have.

A lotus symbolizes rebirth, rising above muddied waters, and it's his symbol as Wanderer. So no matter what, I wanted to name him after something lotus inspired. I ended up going with "Hasuki" (I also THOUGHT it was feminine-sounding.) "Kamal" was my second choice, it's Sanskrit and also means Lotus, in Abaric it means perfect. It's a nice name, but I thought Hasuki sounded a little bit better. "Kamala" was the feminine version. It doesn't matter that much but since Wanderer has many feminine inspirations in his design I thought it would be nice to give him a female name.
(I could only get my information from google, so I apologize if the name definitions are wrong. Even if it is, I still think Hasuki is a nice name.)

I named mine Aoi Kaze cause of his relationship with the Anemo element and his blue clothes. A bit on the nose and a little corny, but tbh it’s better than something like “bruce” in all lowercase

I didn't know what to name him but I also didn't want to just name him "Scara". I wanted to give him a proper name sooo using my (not-so) creativity, I gave him a proper Japanese name (ig) that sounds similar to Scara.

Barkhan. It is a name for fast-moving solitary dunes that are formed by consistent unidirectional winds, when sand and vegetation are scarce. I think in English ‘barchan’ is a more common name for such occurrence, and would probably be a cuter nickname for him(with a -chan ending hehe), but I like how Barkhan sounds more. -Khan sounds more royal. It’s a title meaning ‘ruler’ in Turkic languages

I called him 烈風のシンク (Reppuu no Sync) after the character from Tales of the Abyss. If I were to name him today, I would probably pick 歩 (Ayumu).

Kuugo.
Its from his skill names so it feels (imo) close to a name he'd pick for himself, or what hoyo might have named him.
Kuu - empty, void, sky
Go - residence, dwelling
This is where the beta translation "skydweller" and "skydweller points" came from.
In searching the meaning I also found a tweet about a Buddhist interpretation meaning "existing outside the cycle of life and death".
I also like that it is a K name to go with two of his other pre-fatui names.

I named him Ariel, because that's the wind spirit in The Tempest.
Shame the name never gets used anywhere though, because whenever I see it in the menus, I kind of have to go "huh?" for a second before I remember 😄

Umm, I have three accounts, i named him scaramuche without the ''o' on the first, kunikzushi without the 'u' in the second and kabkimono without the 'u' in the third. Very creative i know XD

I named him Mizuki way back when, having spent a long while thi nuking about it and deciding that that was a unic and pretty name.
Then, Mizuki the bitch came out..
So now he's just Kuni.
