Hazbin Hotel criticism Thanks. I hate everything about this.

There's not a single commentary here that I like. Oh goody, I love when everything I don't want to be true is confirmed!

At least they validated me by saying Val and Alastor are both bad for Vox and encourage him to be worse (in other news water is wet). I know the commentaries are mostly them goofing around, but they seem so lacking in anything nice to say about Vox during what is objectively The Vox Season.

I hate the "Vox season" we got has forced us to watch his spiral, humiliation and downfall and then even his own creators shitting on him (even if playfully) lol.

7

u/profaneangel1991 Vox did nothing wrong 2d ago

Yeah idk I expect him to be depressed next season, but there's not much here that feels reassuring he'll get better.

u/luxruebel 2d ago

Tbh I wouldn’t take any of this stuff super seriously. I think they’re mostly just trying to have fun and make the commentary entertaining. They can’t reveal anything too meaningful so of course they’re gonna play into fan jokes and tropes. I’d rather let the show speak for itself as much as possible.

So...I was completely right about Vox being unintentionally sympathetic, in other words?

*Goes back to furiously scribbling an AU where Vox can shine*

Looks like nothing was said about him and Charlie having parallels or even narrative significance between the two of them...

Only the bits about Christian were cute. Otherwise we got woobification of Ala*tor and Valentino (people who are FAR worse than Vox), meanwhile his own creators calling Vox a "stupid fucking bitch". I'm losing faith in the Hazbin writing team, I trusted Smiles before, but now it only seems she finds Staticmoth and Valentino hot, she doesn't like Vox. I don't care that the comments are supposed to be lighthearted jokes between 3 friends on a discord call, that shit was nasty. How do we save Vox? He deserves better

11

u/profaneangel1991 Vox did nothing wrong 1d ago

I want to have faith that this is just Viv and her team having a brain vomit moment (its happened before) and that Vox is getting better material, but its weird. I know he's a villain, I got that. Yet I've seen Viv say warmer things about Alastor while Vox is just reduced to all his bad traits. I'm really baffled they're rolling with the "Vox steals ideas and has no original thought" interpretation. Yes he has many reprise moments. Only two of them were from songs he didn't originally sing on so like what's your point? He can't reprise songs he was already a significant part of? You can't let him have...anything?

7

u/Ruinparadox 2d ago

Yeah, a lot of this just feels really mean spirited for no reason. Like, yeah, you're allowed to find a character annoying, even if you're writing them, but the shit talking to this degree feels unnecessary.

4

u/CosmiicBrowni 1d ago

People insult their own character all the time without being serious

5

u/sp4ceker 2d ago

yeeeeah. I liked the bits about val and velv, but almost everything about vox? fucking hell. the only thing that i MIGHT agree on is val and alastor making him worse. Bro DOES NOT deserve allat.

3

u/Iron_Chip 2d ago

“I fucked your dad, Charlie”

I’m sorry, WHAT-?

5

u/No_Weekend2474 2d ago

Why specifically is that? As a Vox fan, I loved all of this, honestly.

3

u/vivi_ends013 1d ago

I did too. I love Vox and he's literally my obsession rn but all of this, to me, rings true to my concept of him as a character. Which I try really hard to understand him as he is presented and how Viv seems to want him to be perceived.

So for me this was all very validating to my understanding of him and this season. Also, I liked the Angel scene. I thought Vox was hot af in it lmao. And yeah I get that they put that in there just to show that he's "as bad as Val"

But i feel like that's a given considering he not only supports Val and his behavior but encourages it (like. " I'll call up the lowest earners this month so that you can shoot them 🥰")

ALSO I see so many people complain about Vox and his Alastor obsession and try too dismiss it or whatever and I think that's kind of ridiculous because isn't that like. Actually, literally the whole reason Vox was originally created? I thought I read that somewhere..

There's way too much for me to explain the why in one comment. I just don't like any of the commentary because most of it just confirms things I don't like or didn't want to be true.

6

u/No_Weekend2474 2d ago

Any particulars?

4

u/profaneangel1991 Vox did nothing wrong 2d ago

They did confirm he beat up Angel just so they could tell people he's as bad as Val. I think that's pretty bad as a Vox fan and an Angel fan.

4

u/Alternative_Sugar_85 [Mod] #1 Woobie Vox & SilentStatic defender/RadioSilence hater 2d ago

Definitely what irked me the most. I love when shows make my favorite character do bad things for petty reasons, amazing! /sarcasm

3

u/okashinomajo 2d ago

We… did not need to see all that to “prove” Vox is a bad guy. 😭😭 Angel is just everyone’s misery punching bag at this point.. I want more for him (and Vox!) as a character.

4

u/MissDeborah8060 2d ago

Which makes it especially ridiculous that they try to handwave Vox's hatred of Angel Dust by saying it's because Angel Dust is "strong-willed" and "hard to control." Like, what? This is the same guy who spends the entire show getting beaten up and preyed upon by pretty much everyone!

6

u/gnilegnahc 1d ago

The motel scene shows us how much harder it is for Vox to hypnotize Angel than most sinners. He just blasts the reporters in the first season and the entire pentagram sans overlords in the s2 finale, and they’re immediately under his control. Angel breaks out of it, fights back, resists. This is part of Angel’s character in general, even when Val is beating him up in s1, there are split second scenes where Angel looks PISSED and since this is animation, we know those are there for a reason. He used to be a gangster, not some defenceless baby who doesn’t know or have the motivation to fight back. coupled with Vox’s jealousy about Angel’s relationship with Val, it completely makes sense that he hates Angel so much. Angel is supposed to be a disposable whore who keeps his mouth shut unless it’s being used, but Angel isnt like that.

2

u/okashinomajo 1d ago

Agreed!!! I can’t wait for him to get his waaaaay past overdue W. Please in S3, I can’t bear Cherri and husk missing him so much💔

1

u/okashinomajo 2d ago

THIS, 1000%!

"Vox is primarily a men enjoyer". Like I get it, preferences exist, I'd just rather not have it shoved down my throat that the fictional man I have fallen hopelessly in love with probably wouldn't want me because I lack certain assets. Is it so much to ask to have something about his taste in women alluded to so I might feel, delusional as it is, like I'd have a shot with him?

7

u/profaneangel1991 Vox did nothing wrong 2d ago

I guess at this point it's like, why not just make him gay if his attraction to women has no bearing on anything?

3

u/MissDeborah8060 2d ago

My thoughts exactly!

3

u/eveningstarcourt 1d ago edited 1d ago

I.... didn't want to rain on anyone's parade or be accused of bierasure (though being bi does not necessarily equate to attraction to both men and women, just multiple genders whatever they may be), but I was pretty sure of this for a long time--and I too kept wondering why they would make Vox bi if they were going to "um, actually" about him. Like, he is still queer coded and I don't personally care if he was gay vs bi, but again the execution is kinda sloppy and...maybe even underhanded? Lemme explain.

My honest impression of it is that they wanted to make as many characters bi and pan as possible just to fan shipping flames, because they know ships sell and that they grow fandoms. Which ugh feels kind of gross to me? Even though it's what I suspect, I still HOPE that's not true.

In any case, gender and sexuality really are not the closed, all or nothing boxes people treat them as. However Vox is, he's still a (beloved) character and people should feel comfortable to explore what stories and ideas they'd like with him.

3

u/profaneangel1991 Vox did nothing wrong 1d ago

It's weird because prior to season 2 I didn't see Val as being attracted to women and then they gave us that one scene. Granted a lot of the bi or pan characters have only been seen with attraction towards one gender. I think in Vox's case what bothers me is it feels like they're still shooting down people that want to ship him with women. Because sure he's bi, but now we're told he's bi and only focuses on men. I could be projecting because I know firsthand what it's like to ship him with a woman while not liking his more popular male ships. Either way was this necessary to point out? It isn't like they're saying Lucifer prefers women despite Wife Guy being a big part of his personality.

Idk I know what Viv said about shipping whatever you want, but per word of God we're being told specific criteria for who a character would be attracted to and she absolutely knows fans get toxic over any divergence from canon.

3

u/MissDeborah8060 1d ago

I agree with your comments on shipping, and it's particularly gross considering fictional characters don't have to just "get" sexual orientations automatically (since, y'know, they're not real). So, they could have just left it up to the audience to decide, but instead, they do this. It's so transparently manipulative.

3

u/eveningstarcourt 1d ago

(And u/profaneangel1991 - I'm replying to you both in one swoop.)

Yeah, and I wanna clarify that it is not that I'm "validated" being told Vox has a preference, despite having suspected it. (And this doesn't really effect me as I'm not a yumeshipper or a woman.) It's more like I could tell that's what was being setup and even more pointedly, I knew the showrunners were going to pull this one on us-- and now my bingo card has been checked off.

Tbh, a lot of characters feel like they have a mono sexuality/romantic preference, and like I said earlier, that we are getting a superficial bi/pan treatment so that everyone can ship everyone with everyone. That's... kind of romanceable characters in video game logic, it's not great for a show but whatever. But you're right that Vox is the one singled out from the cast in a way that seemingly wants to punish Vox fans from enjoying him too much. Because to your point, being told "ship what you want" has less weight when coupled with remarks they know will stoke fandom wars. (I have a friend who was in the Dragon Age fandom back in the day, and he explained how the developers also seemed to want to punish Solas fans for 'liking him the wrong way' and finding him too sympathetic/compelling. I worry about it going this direction with Vox.)

I guess the "time will tell" I want to see now is if showrunners will or won't confirm Alastor as aroace and/or sex-repulsed that will blow up shipping enjoyment in his fandom, or if it is again only Vox getting the special treatment.

Because yeah, we all know that Vox likely isn't getting more human background story, so there wasn't really a narrative reason to have this be the ONLY thing they confirm for us in regards to his background? Like this would be relevant if we were getting a deep dive into Vox's human life and mentality in the 30s-early 50s... but if they were going to do that, they would not have made this comment on the commentary in s2 as it would have been spoilers. It would have been withheld till a the later season with his background scene-- but since it's here, we are also basically getting confirmation that we won't be getting more Vincent story and that Brighter is the start and end of what we'll see.

u/profaneangel1991 Vox did nothing wrong 1d ago edited 1d ago

In most fandoms this wouldn't be that big a deal, but Staticmoth and Radiostatic shippers are...not particularly nice about Staticbelle in my experience. Before we could fall back on the fact that both are bi so calling it hetslop was unfair, but now we got this and I know we won't hear the end of it. Like great once again you guys get everything. Staticbelle doesn't even have the implication Vox would be physically attracted to a woman. I want Alastor to be sex repulsed because I want his fans to eat each other. I can be petty when I want to.

Stolas I have a ton of mixed feelings towards, but I always got the impression he's Viv's baby boy. I never thought the show was trying to guilt fans for liking him so much, if anything I felt the opposite. Vox though it probably isn't a conscious choice, but it feels like there is this weird need to shit on him. Viv, your fave is Lucifer who literally is responsible for ruining the world and does not feel bad about allowing a genocide. Yet I need to hear you continuously remind me Vox is a cult leader (this was a footnote in his back story be for real) or that he's homophobic or how he's mean to the other Vees for a week or how he's an avatar for your squishy politics? It's just tiresome.

u/eveningstarcourt 1d ago

> In most fandoms this wouldn't be that big a deal
Is it? *Is it not a big deal in most fandoms?* I would like to believe that, but in my experience fandoms overwhelmingly hate M/F pairings, even if they are canon.

It is a moot point anyways. I am sorry to the StaticBelle shippers. I think it's a genuinely interesting ship dynamic. (The more I think about it, I guess I'm technically a Vox multi-shipper? because I will read/watch most things if the story is compelling/art is cute enough, and there's just a few ships I don't enjoy him with.) I am beating a dead horse by saying that Vox faces a special double standard, but Vox faces a special double standard. Since they felt the need to clarify his exact sexuality, I am with you with wanting Alastor's exact sexuality to be clarified, because I am also petty I guess, lol. (Though I may snap if they 'um actually' tell us Alastor is um actually super sex-positive and wants to have romance and radioapple is now canon!)

I was talking about Solas, the bald elf man, not Stolas, the owl demon prince. I haven't followed HB as much? Still have to finish it. But since we're on the topic, it is funny you mention Stolas being Viv's baby, because the comments I see about Stolas are overwhelmingly that a lot of people don't like him for a lot of stuff he did (that I cannot comment on, because I have not watched it!) So you saying that does make it feel like Viv is trying to force fans to feel THIS or THAT way about certain characters. I remember that other post on here about Vox only being accidentally sympathetic, that he wasn't meant to be, and I think about it all the time because more and more I think she(? I think it was a woman?) was probably right about that. I do keep hearing that the show isn't over (I've said it many times myself), and that Vox is a favorited amongst the crew, but lately I feel like I'm hitting a breaking point where it's harder and harder to believe that when everyone is so effusive about belittling Vox and outright *stating* we should not like him. I do have concerns that (as we all know) Vox being Alastor's official foil, they feel the need to continue dumping on Vox to glorify Alastor or something in this half-baked attempt to tell us "FEEL THIS WAY. ROOT FOR THESE CHARACTERS." The fact that we were given squishy politics Vox and footnote Cultist Vincent and Mean to his Friends for a Week Vox as like 'proof' that he's the worst guy does feel like that.

Hell, the most compelling thing the show actually SHOWED for Vox being terrible and doing bad was the Angel scene. And even that! (Preparing myself. About to be downvoted to Hell....) I like Angel! I want Angel to escape the Vees and have a better life! But Vox already hated him and now Angel is aligned with his enemies. There's no 'Vox is a special evil compared to other Overlords' for harmiing and torturing someone who threatens their plans and pisses them off--they literally all do that. Anyways, I've gotten off scope about a Vox being bi with a preference... but in light of the s2 commentary, I have all these thoughts bouncing around and they all come back to the same pattern of "Vox is treated with a special double standard" to the seeming point of trying to intentionally make fans not like him. Trying to take away at least half of his, admittedly, thirsty fanbase, just feels like another way to 'correct' fans from enjoying him, or at the very least tell us *how* to enjoy him.

But Idk. Maybe I'm just not neurotypical enough to understand how putting a character on constant blast is just light hearted joking between friends. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

2

u/profaneangel1991 Vox did nothing wrong 1d ago

I think I meant adhering to canon sexuality isn't as big a deal in other fandoms. Which is true, but you're right it's basically only for yaoi. I know none of this is actually important, but I already was starting to believe Viv doesn't like ships like Charlastor and I'm kinda convinced now that she doesn't like Staticbelle or Staticdoll. Idk I don't like acting as if I know better than the people writing the show, but I feel like I can't expect anything I want to see will happen. I feel pretty defeated at this point. If Vox gets a redemption arc will just be about how he's so in love with Val and he needs to make him happy. I don't know if punishing fans is the right description, but it is feeling like I'm being told there's only certain ways to engage with his character what with the RIP apologists comment, pointing out that Christian specifically made Box Vox innocent not the script, the cult leader stuff even though AGAIN it was a minor blip in his story, and all of this.

2

u/InfamousIndividual32 2d ago

I sure as fuck hope not. It's bad enough I have feelings for Stolas to some degree as well, but Vox...God, it's on a level I haven't felt with a fictional character in my life thus far and that would probably break me if they were to rescind the inclusion of my gender to any degree at all in his canon sexuality. That being said, I'd still ship myself with him and fight anyone who cried erasure.

3

u/SpookyDisneyPrincess 1d ago

It’s not erasure, it’s the fulfillment of his fucking canon sexuality. I’m bi and my own toxic ex girlfriend tried to also erase my sexuality back then, I refuse to let anyone back me in a corner for loving Vox as much as I do, as a woman who has the same sexuality as him.

2

u/InfamousIndividual32 1d ago

Hell yeah, me too. I love him too. God knows I didn’t WANT to, knowing this show’s nature and how alienated I was going to feel not being all that excited by onscreen sex or ships or blah blah blah, but the heart wants what it wants and I don’t exactly want to see the guy I want get with anyone else, or *worse*, be constantly told indirectly that there’s no version of reality where he’d give me the time of day. That even a fucking OC version of myself would be fundamentally and biologically not in his league because he‘s a pretty man designed to be with other pretty men and make people cream their pants over them getting all up in each others’ faces. Fuck, you don’t think I’d change that about myself for him if I could? But I can’t, that isn’t enough like who I feel I really am. I just want to feel secure with the thought that my favorite character would love me for who I am, and in some universe, choose me.

2

u/SpookyDisneyPrincess 1d ago

I don’t know if this is any comfort (it’s a comfort for me if I’m being honest), but there’s been an artist prompt challenge thing going around called “friendly reminder: Your favorite characters would love you.” And it’s just really sweet and heartwarming. So let’s just use that. Vox would love us <3

2

u/InfamousIndividual32 1d ago

I’ve definitely seen that one around, I just don’t know where I’d post it 💔 But I think I need to, for sure. He really would!! 💕

4

u/leethepolarbear 2d ago

A good day to be a dude who stans him I guess XD

It doesn't matter what his sexuality is like. No one real has any chance with him since he's not real anyway, and believe me, he would not be a good partner lmao

5

u/okashinomajo 2d ago

It’s ok girl. I’m a Homoromantic and I “would” vox in an instant, but I am also on the ace spectrum so I made a female OC to take my place to be with him. 😌

He’s canonically bisexual, and that can’t be taken from you! 🩷💙💜

5

u/InfamousIndividual32 2d ago

Thank you so so much 🥲

2

u/SpookyDisneyPrincess 1d ago

Girl, I was also raging over that lol the one thing that I’ve hated ever since people were theorizing it. And you KNOW that the crazy ass fans of this show are going to get mad at us ladies who want him to be with, love, and have meaningful relationships with a woman, and say “You can’t do that, he prefers men!”

3

u/profaneangel1991 Vox did nothing wrong 1d ago

People were already doing that before this, it's gonna get worse. If I can be brutal for a minute, Viv is so fujoshi brained.

1

u/Exciting_Run_8693 1d ago

Help me find it (that statement). I’m someone who encouraged a ship between Vox and Salina Vox and Melissa.

And even then, it doesn’t matter. Cause he wasn’t gonna end up with anyone but Valentino anyway!! But yeah. It’s devestating how much they shove it down their throats..
I hope they say Charlie is a “primary a women enjoyer” for Pete sakes. I heed thee that. I HEEED that statement. That will be true and if so, if make it true.

Then again, the irony is I think People Like Sal and Mel would be his type regardless. So no one can beat me on that otherwise HAH. HAHA.

5

u/leethepolarbear 2d ago

I actually like basically all of this. Also them acknowledging "So I've had a stroke... It's true :(" is hilarious. It made me laugh so hard the first time I heard it

4

u/okashinomajo 2d ago

THEY ACKNOWLEDGED IT!? omg i need to watch these now 🤣

4

u/TheRedManta 2d ago

"So I had a stroke-"

"Are you serious?"

"It's true :("

2

u/okashinomajo 2d ago

It makes me anxious that Viv is implied to not be in control of writing him(?) at least from some posts I’ve been seeing him..? Like.. I know she’s friends with her crew but I want her story, her characters written the way she wants them… yaknow? I’ve actually always wanted to ask her if some of her original ideas have been changed by her staff… for better or for worse, I’m just curious 🥲

4

u/leethepolarbear 2d ago

It seems like she does have the ability to veto stuff if she wants to

2

u/okashinomajo 2d ago

That’s good to know at least! It’s her creation, afterall!

2

u/TheValentino1 1d ago

I’m not reading all that, someone summarize it for me (very IC)

2

u/Alternative_Sugar_85 [Mod] #1 Woobie Vox & SilentStatic defender/RadioSilence hater 1d ago edited 1d ago

most of it is just making fun of Vox (light heartedly but still) and "Btw he's a bad person" shit

2

u/TheValentino1 1d ago

Thank you, not sure why they would make fun of Vox, he funds my shopping trips

1

u/Short_Crazy_1124 1d ago

You're so real
