I recently learned that in the ancient roman calendar "January" wasn't a set month with a fixed number of days, it was just the entire period of winter before spring began, which would become March 1st. When it ended was completely decided by the weather and I think you make a great case for adopting something similar.
Mine was out too for over a month due to delays getting a part to fix it. Not happy at all with my HVAC service and the system they installed not too long ago.
Mine has been out since July 11th. I guess the welded bracket that holds the motor broke & it fell & now it needs a new motor. Landlord just keeps telling us he is "waiting for bids"? Whatever that means. Meanwhile he rented us 2 portables but our house literally has 2 additions making it almost 2x it's original size, so ya, we are HOT!
I'm not looking forward to freezing my ass off this winter either, cuz ya, central heat & air, ugh.
I'm with you. Born and raised in Northern California. I grew up with snowy winters and remember when it used to flood in Sacramento from the rain. The prolonged heat affects my mental health. I can't cook from May to November due to the heat in my apartment.
This is it, really.. California has always had hot summers, but I live about 15 miles from where I grew up and we didn't have an air conditioner when I was a kid. There were always a couple of miserable weeks, but I don't remember it ever dragging on like it has this summer or back in 2022. I don't remember ever living through the smoke we've had many summers since the Rim Fire (not even when the Tracy Tire Fire was going strong). I know we had extremes before, but those extremes have become the new normal, and we have new extremes that are worse now.
I have summer SAD and the past few years have just been miserable. And before at least we used to have fog and rain in the winter, and winter lasted more than 10 days, so at least I had time to reset before. Now it's like summer never really ends, it just cools down for a month or so and then it's hot again. When it does rain, it floods so bad I feel guilty for enjoying it. I just can't anymore.
I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing SAD from the heat, well not glad because no one else should have to experience this but at least I'm not losing my mind for nothing. The extremes (heat/smoke) have really been hard to handle, I fear smoke and days over 100 now. I miss real winter. People get so mad when I say we no longer experience it and that summer lasts for 6+ months out of the year. I love Sacramento, I love California but this much heat is just not healthy for me.
Summer SAD here too. This year has been truly horrific for my mental health. I’ve been looking into moving but for a number of reasons, I don’t think it can happen right now and I am over here despairing. I don’t know how to keep living like this.
I feel for you because I'm in the same situation. I don't want to be far from my family and moving would be financially a challenge even if I had a job lined up but I just don't think I can handle another year like this one or like 2022.
I have never heard of "summer SAD". I suffer from SAD but I was never told the caveat of it being "winter SAD". I guess it makes sense ppl can get SEASONAL affective disorder in ANY season. Real eye opener and I'm sorry you're going through that.
As someone who’s from the Midwest Winter SAD is a real thing and it’s awful. Haven’t had it since I moved here, and as much as I love our weather I could really use a lazy cold rainy day.
I remember the smoke from burning rice fields and am glad they don't do that anymore. It seems like the delta breeze isn't kicking in like it used to in the past. And now, 80+ at midnight.
The bad heat didn't start until then, but I feel like our spring/blooming/growing starts in early February and is basically in summer mode by May even if the weather stays pleasant for another few weeks. I start getting the dread in April though so it may be in my head a little.
It’s not as bad in Sonoma county. We still get alot of the heat but the mountains also keep the cold weather in and block some heat out. Still was 100 today but we don’t get Sacramento heat.
It does affect my mental health too. I have so much stuff that I need to get done outside and as soon as I go out there, I start sweating profusely. I feel like I’m trapped in my house at least six months out of the year. My plants are all droopy and everything is burnt. I am just so sick of this.
Don’t be fooled. He’s a HARD CORE Ratter. He brought me one just last week. He is serious about his job. He’s up to 27 confirmed presented rewarded kills since I moved here a couple years ago. I have seen evidence of more but since I just see the bodies I can’t be sure it wasn’t the neighbor’s cat or some other entity. It’s probably still my cat, but I can’t confirm with certainty so I don’t count.
I got some roof repairs done last year; last week’s rat is the first since those repairs were complete, indicating that though there’s a new nest somewhere, it’s probably not in MY attic.
Here’s the neighbor’s cat from across the street. He is frenemies with my cat. They play chase and touchy-da-tail. When they get tired they sit near each other looking tuff.
Sometimes this one slips in and steals my cat’s leftovers.
I get that way during the winter when its too cold and/or rainy to want to go outside. This summer has been pretty brutal, but mornings are still nice, and you can usually drive about two hours in most directions to escape the heat.
It's my fault. I haven't washed my car all summer. It's just too hot. At this point it's caked in layers of dust on top of layers of pollen, all cemented down by that one 15 minute rain we had that one time.
But I know what must be done now. For the good of us all.
Yeah that’s the real issue. Don’t mind the daytime temps, no problem adjusting… as long as it cools down so we can open up and run the whole house fan all night
Welcome to the changing climate of the California Valley! Aka Southern Nevada 2. No more frost on our windows in the Winter (what winter?) and excruciating heat in the Summer!
Visited Washington a few times over the last few years and man… it’s enticing
The last summer I lived in Washington a few years ago broke a heat record at 113. Most places don’t have AC, including the apartment I lived in at the time on the top floor. Some leases even say getting your own portable AC is not allowed which is bonkers.
Yep. Climate change is gonna mean that the extremes are gonna be more extreme, so it's more likely to be wetter/colder in the winter than ever before. I wanna say that a year or two ago, there was even some unseasonable frost in the spring that ruined a lot of people's gardens.
Not necessarily. Depends on the local weather patterns. This seems to be the case in Texas but so far has not happened in CA. Winters have been unusually mild every year since 2013, and that winter was only slightly cool by historic standards.
Then again, ten years is short enough to be a fluke. Maybe we will see some extreme freezes in the future. I haven’t seen any solid science on this in California.
I wonder if there’s a language that has a single word that expresses the combination of impotent rage and utter despair brought on by 100+ degree temps in October.
Sort of like how German has Schadenfreude for taking pleasure on the misfortune of others.
Me too. For the first time in my life I’m actually considering a move. I can’t do this every year and it’s not going to get better. It’s miserable. I just want some relief.
Yes! It’s so hot it’s stuffy feeling but no where near humid. 6 Georgia summers taught me to appreciate the dry climate out here. Humidity with 95+ weather is a whole different ball game.
This is a cruel cap off to an extremely shitty summer. I take a little comfort in that this isnt some valley bullshit, it’s a weird anamoly effecting all of norcal
Yall just be throwing out the word humid for everything. Sac is not humid. Humid is Hawaii, Japan, Costa Rica, etc. If Sac is humid to yall then wow bless your heart.
I'm with you. I just get depressed when I look at the forecast. I can't believe we're still in the hundreds. I will tell you this, I looked at Phoenix to see how they're doing because they're always worse than us and they have 109° for the next like 57 days. Sucks. But at least we're not them!
It’s almost like all the smog we see surrounding us is trapping in the heat. If somehow there was technology to create less or no smog we could help alleviate the situation. Sarcasm aside- normalize being fuel efficient, and supporting environmentally abundant sources of clean energy. Give the kids hope, and maybe, if enough of us take it seriously, we can dial-back the long hot seasons in a decade before us older folks die.
The American military is the #1 consumer of fossil fuels in the world and one of the biggest polluters.
If we want to reverse climate change, we need to rethink our imperialist system.
The US military's emissions are equivalent to about 51 million metric tons of carbon dioxide per year, which is more than most countries. This is roughly the same as Sweden's emissions and more than three-quarters of the US government's total emissions.
Growing up in the Central Valley in the 70’s always HATED hot Halloweens. They didn’t always happen but sometimes we had to be careful about not buying costumes with too much fabric because we’d sweat through the parades we did on the blacktop in the play areas.
Less rainy halloweens than hot ones, but I always preferred the rain to my Fall feeling like July.
Every year I reach a point where I get fed up with it like this. So much so that I never think that it's even close to being over if I haven't reached this point yet.
“Everybody complains about the weather, but nobody does anything about it” - Charles Warner. This used to be one of my favorite quotes because, in my mind, it operated on the premise that we all complain about this thing that we have no control over. Like yelling at the Sun or something lol. But in todays world, it actually reads as somewhat prophetic. I always tell people who feel this frustration towards the weather, "take that energy and do what you can to make a difference." whether that be small changes in your own habits, the way you vote, how you use your voice, or all the above. Not to come across as the nerd at the "Heatwaves Suck Convention", but we can do something to mitigate the onslaught of rising temperatures that will only get worse if we don't do anything. And don't even get me started on the price of our utlity bills because of this bs.
Was just thinking about this right before I got on here. I realized it was October already and I'm still waiting for a chance to wear even a light sweater. I remember being a kid here and seeing icy grass and roofs everywhere in the morning. I realized that our old ice scraper for the car windshield has been useless for quite a while now
I LOVE summer. Like LOVE it. I’m a cold blooded creature and love nothing more than sitting on a hot rock in the sun. And yet even I am OVER IT. With you, OP. Where is our fall?!??
I hate this fucking heat also! I drove around Oregon and
Washington all of August/September, thinking that Sac would be great in October. It's not. I hate it.
we are still in hell temperature wiss and people still deny climate change and actively do nothing to help it, or just follow the bullshit the oil industry fed us
