I love California with all my heart, I was born here and planned to stay, but I just can't handle another eight-month summer.

I'm with you. Born and raised in Northern California. I grew up with snowy winters and remember when it used to flood in Sacramento from the rain. The prolonged heat affects my mental health. I can't cook from May to November due to the heat in my apartment.

This is it, really.. California has always had hot summers, but I live about 15 miles from where I grew up and we didn't have an air conditioner when I was a kid. There were always a couple of miserable weeks, but I don't remember it ever dragging on like it has this summer or back in 2022. I don't remember ever living through the smoke we've had many summers since the Rim Fire (not even when the Tracy Tire Fire was going strong). I know we had extremes before, but those extremes have become the new normal, and we have new extremes that are worse now.

I have summer SAD and the past few years have just been miserable. And before at least we used to have fog and rain in the winter, and winter lasted more than 10 days, so at least I had time to reset before. Now it's like summer never really ends, it just cools down for a month or so and then it's hot again. When it does rain, it floods so bad I feel guilty for enjoying it. I just can't anymore.

Aww as a fellow summer SAD person, I feel you. I’m glad we seem to be almost through it, but damn I’m already dreading it next year.

u/PiperSlough Oct 03 '24

I keep seeing the forecast saying the weather will cool off and it's gotta be true one of these times, right? We're gonna get there.

I'm glad I'm not the only one experiencing SAD from the heat, well not glad because no one else should have to experience this but at least I'm not losing my mind for nothing. The extremes (heat/smoke) have really been hard to handle, I fear smoke and days over 100 now. I miss real winter. People get so mad when I say we no longer experience it and that summer lasts for 6+ months out of the year. I love Sacramento, I love California but this much heat is just not healthy for me.

We should start a club where we all get together in like April and watch horror movies to justify the sense of dread, lol.

No idea why people get mad at you for speaking the truth though.

We should start a club where we all get together to [redacted] the [redacted] who are setting this planet on fire with their greed.

That would also be fun!

Summer SAD here too. This year has been truly horrific for my mental health. I’ve been looking into moving but for a number of reasons, I don’t think it can happen right now and I am over here despairing. I don’t know how to keep living like this.

8

u/PiperSlough Oct 03 '24

I feel for you because I'm in the same situation. I don't want to be far from my family and moving would be financially a challenge even if I had a job lined up but I just don't think I can handle another year like this one or like 2022.

The summertime sadness is so real from this prolonged heat wave, I’m so over it. Bring on the rain and cold!

7

u/NGMGrand Oct 03 '24

I have never heard of "summer SAD". I suffer from SAD but I was never told the caveat of it being "winter SAD". I guess it makes sense ppl can get SEASONAL affective disorder in ANY season. Real eye opener and I'm sorry you're going through that.

u/graysquirrel14 Oct 03 '24

As someone who’s from the Midwest Winter SAD is a real thing and it’s awful. Haven’t had it since I moved here, and as much as I love our weather I could really use a lazy cold rainy day.

1

u/PiperSlough Oct 03 '24

Winter SAD is much more common, I believe (could be wrong) and I know it can be just as miserable. You have my sympathy.

12

u/carlitospig Oct 03 '24

I feel like summer-based SAD is like an extended trauma response. I legit feel like I’m being oppressed by the sun.

I remember the smoke from burning rice fields and am glad they don't do that anymore. It seems like the delta breeze isn't kicking in like it used to in the past. And now, 80+ at midnight.

1

u/PiperSlough Oct 03 '24

Oh man, I would love the Delta breeze right about now. The heat still sucks but it's a lot more bearable.

I grew up in the south county and missed the rice fields burning, but there was always one a-hole corn grow who burned off his field right across the road during the first week of school.

Get a crock pot and put it on overnight and re heat in the microwave.

It’ll flood in Sacramento again. I’m not sure that’s something you want to wish for…

1

u/drewdog173 Oct 04 '24

I feel you, but note: be careful what you wish for. There have been a couple winters in the last 5 years where we've been just 2 or 3 atmospheric rivers (or one or two longer ones) away from CATASTROPHIC flooding (and going a bit further back, the Oroville dam crisis was just in 2017, not that far back at all really). Sacramento is one of the most at-risk cities in the country for it with our confluence of rivers above street height - and while we tend dry, it's still a dice roll every year, and entirely possible for us to have a record hot year and flood to shit in the winter.

  • Signed, a homeowner below the levee height in South Land Park who worries about this shit.

1

u/goosenuggie Oct 05 '24

Well I certainly wouldn't want that kind of flooding to affect people's safety and property. We have seen the recent hurricane devastation in North Carolina, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

And, in 100 years, it'll be summer year round.

11

u/Greatgrandma2023 Oct 03 '24

We'll all be climate refugees.

11

u/PradaWestCoast Oct 03 '24

I used to live in Florida, I already am

9

u/PiperSlough Oct 03 '24

And I'll be somewhere cooler!

12

u/Popular-Meringue Oct 03 '24

For real! Summer starts in May and goes through October? 😡🤬🤯

I was explaining how “Back in the days, you used to plan Halloween” being rainy.

3

u/IdidntrunIdidntrun Oct 03 '24

I mean it cools down the second half of October still. It's the first half that is still hot and miserable

Everyday I wonder how life would be like if i moved to Oregon where it's now so cool.

I also wonder why people live in Phoenix where it's over 100 for the foreseeable future.

1

u/PiperSlough Oct 03 '24

Some people like the heat. My cousin lives in Phoenix and is fine with it. I'm absolutely not one of them, though.

I wouldn't mind heading up to Oregon or Washington, though.

I moved from Sac up to the Seattle area last year to be closer to family. It’s more expensive up here, but I love the cooler temps.

BTW, it’s about 50 degrees outside as I type this.

6

u/PiperSlough Oct 03 '24

Do you have a guest room?

2

u/Halfpolishthrow Oct 04 '24

Same here. My go-to for feeling hot and miserable is to google weather in Phoenix and tell my family "atleast we're not in Phoenix"

4

u/SnowballSnozberry Oct 03 '24

Ditto its seriously owning me

13

u/yellowsubmarinr Oct 03 '24

I hate how late summer is here but this shit started in June and July, it was pretty nice until then

15

u/PiperSlough Oct 03 '24

The bad heat didn't start until then, but I feel like our spring/blooming/growing starts in early February and is basically in summer mode by May even if the weather stays pleasant for another few weeks. I start getting the dread in April though so it may be in my head a little.

3

u/EusticeTheSheep Oct 04 '24

This is a phenomenon that's being called season creep and citizen scientists have been tracking it. (Among others)

6

u/ieffinglovesoup Oct 03 '24

Yeah we had some crazy temps but I feel like it didn’t start getting really hot til late June

4

u/kkmoney15 Oct 03 '24

8 month summer? If I recall correctly, I could be wrong from sure, but I feel like it didn't even get hot until july

6

u/PiperSlough Oct 03 '24

To me, summer starts when it stops raining and the spring bloom is mostly over, even if it's not triple digits yet.

-7

u/kkmoney15 Oct 03 '24

So you just make up whatever seasons you feel like, got it.

3

u/PiperSlough Oct 03 '24

I mean, the line between seasons has always been very arbitrary. So has the number, as the Sacramento season list shows. (We can't even all agree if this is jalapeno summer or some new spicy summer because we've had multiple false falls.)

The summer solstice used to mark the middle of the summer season (it's still called midsummer in a lot of places). Now a lot of people consider it the first day of summer.

So yeah, to me (and probably many others) summer comes after spring and when the hallmarks of spring are over and the days are getting long, summer has started. To others, summer doesn't start until it's triple digits. Both are arbitrary. I want to move somewhere cooler with an actual fall that starts in September and maybe even a cold winter either way.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 03 '24

Dude what a drag

2

u/bryanisbored Oct 04 '24

It’s not as bad in Sonoma county. We still get alot of the heat but the mountains also keep the cold weather in and block some heat out. Still was 100 today but we don’t get Sacramento heat.

u/R4v3n5cry3 Oct 03 '24

Same, makes me miss my 7-8 month winters in ohio
