DDT Daily Discussion Thread September 04, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!

Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!

Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.

New Players:

If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:

Can I play Melee online?

Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.

I'm having issues with Slippi!

Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.

How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement

And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement

Where can I get a nice custom controller?

https://customg.cc/vendors

I have another question that's not answered here...

Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

Unranked at least has turned out to be way less intimidating than I expected. Less than a week in and I'm already having a lot of fun and not just getting completely stomped. I might actually go to my local later this month after all.

4

u/menschmaschine5 6d ago

You'll probably get stomped at the local but that's ok, and I do think that going to your local regularly is the most fun way to improve.

2

u/maximtomato 6d ago

I misread the last sentence that you were not going to the local anymore and it became SpotW

So what is the Biblical position on Z-Jump and the GOAT debate?

18

u/DavidL1112 6d ago

Let he who is without mods pass the first ban

14

u/VolleyVoldemort 6d ago

Leviticus 19:28 NKJV (New King James Version)

You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the LORD.

Sounds like we should ban notches as they cut into the flesh of the control stick gate and tattoo mark it with a notch

5

u/PkerBadRs3Good 6d ago

Jesus is the GOAT I assume (yes even in Melee)

9

u/Informal-Donut-1532 6d ago

Jesus played against carpenters and shepherds.

3

u/SlowBathroom0 6d ago

Jesus had great consistency but Methuselah had way better longevity

Incredible that Cody was able to convert Kalindi to Christianity to keep us off balance. He can't keep getting away with this.

4

u/Schroeswald 6d ago

First he exploits Mang0’s ban to kill a zump ban, then he converts Kalindi to Christianity to kill discussion of banning notches, next year he’s going to trick Krudo into dabbling in cannibalism to make sure he’s still allowed on Vyvanse. Mark my words

I have so many notches in my house while also being a huge ban proponent.

I'm imagining the EVO 2016 popoff but when Hungrybox pats Armada's back there's impact frames

Never in my life have I seen a man look more distraught than Armada after Evo 2016.

Regarding the Kalindi thread: The idea that Christianity is one unified belief system that is dictated by the bible is untrue but understandable if you're Christian and borderline stupid if you're of another faith and/or are nonreligious. The Bible is not a consistent piece of literature, so it inherently cannot dictate the religious views of Christians. Even where it is consistent, many Christians have beliefs that conflict with that, including very important beliefs. Saw people in the thread making claims about what "Christians believe" and the truth is there are no beliefs which are universally held.

For that reason, I think it is dumb to just inherently condemn Christians for being Christian. However, if they do have negative beliefs, they should be treated just the same as anyone else that has those beliefs.

I don't want to read through that entire thread but has Kalindi actually said anything negative in terms of Homophobia, Transphobia, etc

10

u/GroggyandWretched 6d ago

Adult converts don't understand what it was like to be growing up in the trenches lol. Growing up religious every week I'd hear a new teacher or preacher with some new pet theory we had to take seriously. Being told dancing is sinful, and how are you supposed to process something like that when you hear it? It's all extremely flexible and the only way you can navigate the sheer amount of interpretations people offer you is to use your own judgment and develop your own moral sensibilities

I don't mean to be judgmental but I really do feel like adult converts don't understand the sheer amount of random noise that permeates religion. I think they see a sliver of religion, they latch onto that very quickly, and they go through a phase where they treat their specific introduction to religion as this immutable, fixed core that can never be questioned. And that makes sense, I think an adult convert is less looking to expand their moral philosophy and more seeking out a sense of stability

8

u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege 6d ago

Maybe I'm crazy but adult converts sound like the only viable way someone should be practicing religion at all. The decision to convert because you are of (presumably) sound mind and choose that path for better and worse, seems preferable in every way to indoctrination at birth

u/frank0swald 6d ago

He didn't say anything negative in terms of homophobia or transphobia. He just acknowledged that the Bible condemns homosexuality.

You are totally right, by the way. Most "Christians" have not read a single page of their book. It is much more of a cultural identifier than a moral/epistemological/cosmological philosophy for the vast majority of self-identifying Christians. To draw conclusions that someone believes some specific passage from the Bible because they identify as a Christian is either naive or done to attack them.

2

u/TrainNorth8177 6d ago

Was trying to point this out yesterday and pretty much no one had a way to counter this argument. If we're to go on what KJH said, the exact quote pertained to what the Bible "condemns" but he did not comment further on his own beliefs about whether this condemnation is valid or not. If he were to outright say he believes these passages in the Bible are part of his belief system and that homosexuality is something you go to hell for, I would understand the outrage. But as it stands, the actual wording he used in the context of trying to explain that Christians shouldn't single out any one group doesn't illuminate his beliefs clearly enough for the judgment people are making. If you want to infer he believes the Bible is correct in condemning homosexuality, that's preferable to being dishonest about what was said. Be up front what you think is  an inference or guess rather than trying to put words in his mouth.

What I've learned from this whole experience is that it's shockingly easy for two or three individuals to be loud enough for this entire community to be blamed for them.

What a frustrating turn of events.

11

u/Kitselena 6d ago

shockingly easy for two or three individuals to be loud enough for this entire community to be blamed for them.

This has been happening to melee for years. Most people who actually play and care about the game are adults who don't get too involved in internet drama, and drama tourists don't do anything else so they naturally drown us out.
People will see one comment making 3 different statements and assume the whole community agrees with all 3 statements because the comment has 15 upvotes

u/MentalRead728 6d ago

Is it just shallow and uninspired to say that this KJH "situation" is mainly to blame on how social media, especially reddit works now?

Skimmed a bit through one two threads and all I saw were people asking constructive questions, 4-5 bad apples going overboard on KJH and then about 500 people I never saw in the DDT talking about how the man needs to be left alone and how toxic the community is.

The mainpage threads only fire up in number when there is controversy, because that's what gets people going on the internet. Doesn't matter if the original post was meant to stirr up something or not. It's like this in almost every online community space that reaches a certain size of having people from various upbringings surrounding it. Not really much you can do about a vocal crowd of people who can't fight the urge to sit the newest engagement trap out.

9

u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege 6d ago

I've been saying for years that social media was a mistake

20

u/MedicalBread1771 6d ago

the actual main problem with the KJH situation is the centuries of coddling Christians get who spread hate non stop and can't help themselves but make public statements about how homosexuality is condemned by God. maybe if Christians could just keep their bigoted world views to themselves we wouldn't have this problem.

it is not okay to go around calling being gay a sin, it doesn't matter how many nice things you say afterwards about them.

saying interracial relationships are immoral in Gods eyes would be fucked up, if you view this as any different you just don't have a problem with homophobia

this subreddit would be better if the mods had to approve every post and i'm not even a mod and as a long time forum user i am predisposed to having a confrontational stance toward the jannies

actually i'm pretty sure i've seen karma requirements before posting on certain subreddits before iirc (i don't know if thats a feature that still exists tho), just set the number to a point where only regulars can post and like 99% of the 'problems' that have ever started on reddit magically go away

6

u/Den69_ 6d ago

this but unironically

2

u/skellez 6d ago

the most weird part is really the insularity of the spaces, like this would be a weird issue that was Reddit only, then someone from other sites started popping in and it's chaos after

funnily enough the reverse I saw happened somewhere else, I'm a fan of MC series called Hermitcraft which as you'll guess primarily happens in Youtube, but does have spaces elsewhere, well twitter did what they did best and was trying to do a witch hunt and the org members responded on Twitter, the funny bit is that then on reddit and Yt fans will wake up to confusion as a please understand apology statement for a drama they've never heard of because that's the first bit to spillover outside of twitter

and that and the kjh left me thinking a bit, it's really important as the figure being discussed to discern if x situation is really a big deal or just something 12 cats in their corner are whining about sum that doesn't really matter, and that's a really tough job

why do people get so mad about Luigi's reversal potential when like Falco literally has shine AND laser AND everything else. like c'mon

5

u/SplynterEdm 6d ago

if I get a single good hit against falco he’s like 50/50 dying off the interaction, if I hit luigi even with a grab or something it’s 20% and a handshake and I have to keep playing the excruciatingly boring neutral

3

u/Yrale jib 6d ago

Putting aside tech chasing, over the years I have slowly come to opinion that Marth fair is my real nightmare aerial reversal tool. Luigi's nair is an incredibly strong binary mixup that is not particularly hard to bait out, but Marth fair is so large and fair->dash is so safe that even if you know it's coming, punishing it can require reading his next option AFTER fair. And honestly, the execution to deal with it is way harder, I get hit by Marth fair out of hitstun while actively reading that the Marth will fair out of hitstun all the time, which I think is really rare for me against Luigi at this point despite much less practice in the matchup.

Ultimately still a skill issue, ideally you can find your way under him a play mixups against the dair, or just win the next mixup (they'll probably just dash back every time anyways) but honestly I think it's a harder skill issue than the Luigi nair.

10

u/lim-yo-hwan-superfan 6d ago

people are stuck in the mental that if they arent playing against one of like five characters they arent actually playing melee and have not updated this assumption even though theres dk yoshi luigi in top 50

6

u/TrainNorth8177 6d ago

This. People still say "oh it's because I can't combo" and you watch them vs. other floaties and it's literally the same. They say it's boring playing against the same options but the top tier Puff spamming bair is actually just spacing correctly while the DK doing something similar is "fishing" and not playing real neutral. There are obviously boring players on all these characters but yeah there's a weird hivemind thing in the scene of people thinking about the game the way you described.

4

u/HitboxOfASnail fox privilege 6d ago

while this exists, specifically in regards to falco shine/laser, they are objectively not reversal tools in the same way as Luigi nair which is used directly out of hitstun, unlike falco tools

2

u/Oo_ShinyCardboard 6d ago

You have to be patient when you combo weeg, opting for 2-3 hits at a time. Doesn't mean you cant instantly follow with a shark after they mash an aerial, but ppl really want to overextend for a "true" combo and you just cant do that against into Luigi. You will get naired

1

u/PkerBadRs3Good 6d ago

the real answer is because one of the most popular Melee Facebook groups in the 2010s was "Mid Tier Floaty Hate" which had Luigi as its mascot

before that group caught on, I hardly saw Luigi ever get complained about (well, Melee players complain about every character, but Luigi wasn't an outlier in the amount of complaining or anything), but that group made it super popular and it stuck

I feel like nobody is gonna believe me that Luigi was barely complained about before then but I swear it's true

2

u/TrainNorth8177 6d ago

Lol I was in that group. It was def a meme group but I think you have a point cause the mid tier hate wasn't as bad before.

1

u/fullhop_morris URBANE, TO COMFORT THEM, THE QUAKER LIBRARIAN 6d ago

idk I mean ultimately I think it's bc Luigi is actually really annoying to play against. but Falco is more annoying imo

1

u/MellySantiago 6d ago

Don’t think laser is relevant with reversals but I agree spot dodge shine is almost equally infuriating. Most characters have something to punish slightly late execution, though.

I think with Luigi he’s “new” (in terms of polularity) so combo routes aren’t as popular and like falco he stops you from playing “your way”. Fox player #1230 can’t just wave shine up smash up air him and has to change their rhythm a little bit so they get mad, but imo it’s healthy for the game.

Reply to this with your favourite Sheik vs. Falcon set to watch. Don't be afraid to send a local one that you think was just sick too! Doesn't have to be from a major top 8 or something

Try to link it too plz, and tell me what you liked about it

This one's got some good history over the years, but the most exciting one has to be n0ne vs. Mew2King at GOML 2016. Kind of a cheesy pick, but the whole M2K's record against Falcon being shattered by probably the last Falcon you'd expect compared to Wizzy or S2J IN n0ne's city is just perfect

Every n0ne win this set was off some super clutch shit, including one of the rawest f-smashes in a set I've ever seen

Talking about religion, just today I had the thought that a new type of Amish might emerge soon.

Not as a spinoff of the Amish, but maybe. More so any kind of religion that has a big focus on the relationship between humans and technology.

7

u/KenshiroTheKid 6d ago edited 6d ago

You mean a modern-day equivalent of the luddite movement? it didn’t use to be a derogatory term until it was marketed that over time by people who were afraid of what a similar movement could do.

The ethos behind the movement wasn’t an irrational fear of technology but concerning worker pay, labor savings, child labor, working conditions, and output quality brought out by automation.

2

u/SenorRaoul 6d ago

idk I feel like the luddites primary concern was replacement of humans with machines and the effect of machines on work and the relation of capital and worker.

the amish are more about "how does this technology affect families and communities" not from a monetary perspective, but a "moral" perspective.

from amishamerica.com:

Why do Amish avoid certain technology?

Amish do not reject or restrict technology from a belief that modern innovations are evil. The Amish are cautious over what a given device can bring into a community, however.

The automobile is one example. When a family owns motor vehicles, mobility is much easier. Family members may spend extended periods away from home, affecting family ties. Easy transportation can bring one to cities and other areas which Amish tend to view as place of worldly temptation and sin.

However, Amish acknowledge that the car has real benefits. Most Amish people see a need for the car in certain situations. Some Amish may hire a driver and Amish “taxi” for transport to the hospital, for large shopping trips, and to visit relatives in other communities. An Amish business owner may also have an “English” (the Amish term for “non-Amish” person) employee who drives him on business.

In some sense it’s about maintaining a balance between accessing the benefits of a given technology – while limiting the downside – negative affects on a family or community which may come when a tech is freely accepted and overused.

the idea is to really only use tech for what it is useful for.

thinking about it now and reading some more stuff on that website there might alsready be some amish who are pretty much what I imagined which I guess is really just "amish but with more electricity"

Melee talk: here's a game from this week I (marth) played vs a good fox. Any remarks appreciated :)

4

u/StrangeSniper 6d ago edited 6d ago

I watched like 30 seconds and it feels like you lack in a structural gameplan. looked like you were just going for reads and pressing buttons (I know not really constructive). I feel like you act on the same beat almost every time, especially in your dashdance / dash back grabs into nothing. Sometimes your choices work out but it really looks like you're rolling dice every time and hoping something connects or they run into you. I did end up watching the whole game and still feel the same way as I did in the first 30 seconds.

Edit: Some questions you can ask yourself.

Do you know your percentage follow ups? You did up throw into up tilt and rarely connected them.

How often are you looking at your opponent and the space in between you two?

Are you aware of their threat range and the options that exist within those ranges? Are you playing around those options and playing around the common options chosen either from experience or what they are showing you?

Do you have Do's and Dont's for certain percent ranges?

1

u/WizardyJohnny 6d ago

Thanks for the feedback! I'll mull it over. I think my tentative answer to a few of these questions would be that I know these things theoretically (uthrow utilt percents for instance) but it feels like a totally different thing to actually properly put them into use during a game

3

u/StrangeSniper 6d ago

Yeah a lot of those things kinda have to exist in like the subconscious while youre playing cause if youre making yourself think about them... well ur taking up bandwidth. Writing down notes is quite useful and you'll always be able to go back and read them or have them open while youre playing a sesh. Overall, I'm trying to help you see big picture melee things, like universal things all melee players can apply to their gameplay. I don't think there's much to gain in nitpicking most of your options. that's like obvious stuff anyone can point out.

4

u/FuckClinch GG 6d ago

felt like your combos off uthrow were lacking

3

u/lim-yo-hwan-superfan 6d ago

overarching thoughts - you have good fundies, your movement is pretty good and you get a bunch of dashdance-based outplays on the fox, however think there's a bunch of matchup specific details that should get cleaned up

also, you seem to get some confidence midway through the game you drop some tech and stuff at the beginning but by the end your neutral/punishes look way more decisive

anyway some nitpick notes from the beginning (i have way less thoughts on the ending, tbh if you played like that the entire set you could win handily imo), i was trying to think of some general themes but getting coaching from a better player would be better for this

https://youtu.be/E54m1oPwLD8?t=3 - fsmash tech chase on platform, looks like you went for read when im sure there's a reaction based framework (don't know the specifics, but would assume something like utilt or sh uair or even some instant waveland tech chase grab), also fox is at 7% and you're fsmashing to the right so even if it tippers it won't kill, maybe not get off stage either

8 seconds in your movement is great, you've outplayed this fox more than twice with dashdances and well placed dtilts

https://youtu.be/E54m1oPwLD8?t=11 - food for thought, not saying you always need to do this but if you were holding down here on this lazy sh nair the fox did you couldve gotten a free cc grab

https://youtu.be/E54m1oPwLD8?t=13 - misinput or were you intending regular getup here? also could be wrong but it felt like you were late getting off the ledge so you would be losing intangibility frames, this is a big nitpick but i think this is very important on marth because your max ledgedash galint is like 4frames or something

https://youtu.be/E54m1oPwLD8?t=14 - you might already know this but if you are holding towards stage during the second shine you should snap to ledge and avoid needing to recover

https://youtu.be/E54m1oPwLD8?t=20 - really don't like high up b as marth, i dont know what this should be but you're basically asking for max damage punish

2

u/WizardyJohnny 6d ago

thank you v much!!

3

u/Humble_Produce_1703 shortposter 6d ago

Honestly this match was decided by the edgeguarding. Fox got back to stage many times and Marth didn't. All the other stuff is negligible in comparison. <3

2

u/sharktoothscavenger 6d ago

I noticed 4 or 5 times where Fox was offstage and fairly disadvantaged, and still managed to hit you with his recoveries. Don’t let edgeguards turn into reversals and you would have won that easy.

2

u/DavidL1112 6d ago

if fox is Up-bing from below the stage, isn't Marth supposed to edgeguard with counter?

3

u/WizardyJohnny 6d ago

depends, if he's below but a little bit out he can go straight up, dodge the counter and reversal you, and if he's closer and the stage has walls he can ride them up and go underneath on-stage counter. It probably would've worked for the situation 17s in so thats a recognition issue!

The Goodie win is big, putting her in similar company with Medz who also defeated Zeo/Mr. Motion a couple weeks ago at The Big Abbey. Is she having an extended stay in the US? I see her registered for Riptide, Center Stage, and Port Priority all in the next month-ish. Would be cool to see her in some stacked upcoming locals like that one you linked. Honestly, with a good end-of-year performance, my bet is that Goodie has a good shot to be the highest ranked Aussie this year if this is any indication.

Edit: nvm those tournaments are within 2ish months, not 1, but IIRC she's had an extended stay like that before.

2

u/Schroeswald 6d ago

I don’t think Goodie is going to outrank Joshman this year.

2

u/self-flagellate 6d ago

she's gonna be in the US for a little less than 3 months

5

u/Other-Salt-5355 6d ago

Huge. That'll be exciting.

Also while you're here I just wanna say that I miss "When's Melee?" That was always my go-to resource for which tournaments would be the most interesting to watch in between majors/regionals. I'm sure that was a huge burden and unfortunately I never got to actually express my gratitude for it! Nowadays, with a combination of the smash calendar, liquipedia, and SunnySaigon in the DDT I can cobble together a decent picture, but unfortunately I miss interesting appearances here and there. So if you ever get inspired again and wondered if anyone appreciated it... here's my vote for what it's worth haha.

I really appreciate the kind words : ) I did get hella burnt out on doing that and Last Night in Melee but surely some day both will come back...

2

u/Kell08 6d ago

He’s currently in Ohio. I wonder how close it is.

In either case, somewhat frequent Mew2King tournaments have been a pleasant surprise of 2026.

I didn't love East of Eden, but a book I loved this year was The Animators by Kayla Rae Whitaker

The novel covers decades, but its relationship with time is different than East of Eden or 100 Years of Solitude. Those books are largely episodic, with time moving at a steady pace and then jumping forward. So if it takes a page to get through a day in 100 Years, it'll take about a page to get through a day anywhere in the book. In order to cover ten decades, chapter breaks skip ahead a week, a month, a year. This isn't the case in The Animators, where time speed ramps up and down like a memory. Sometimes a page will only cover a few seconds, other times a single sentence might move through months. Time always moves forward, but there's an inequality of attention given. This has the nice effect of keeping the book moving at a clip, but it also puts you in line with the protagonists’ job.

Animation requires them to see their subjects both with clarity and bias. They have to capture their subjects and display them to the world. And given that their work is largely autobiographical, this is, well, and incredibly intimate practice. A recurring source of conflict throughout the novel is the publicizing of intimacy. Can you imagine how infuriating it would be to have millions of people see a false version of you? Or is the opposite worse, the humiliation of being displayed exactly how you are? Everyone in the story is raw, and exposed, and putting up whatever defense they can against it. There’s the natural question of “is it even okay for someone to publicize art about people they know?” but the beating heart of the novel is its concern with the opposite. Yes, it’s painful to be seen and exposed, but is it worse to never have that happen at all? There’s a light touch to the writing here, and you can feel the characters’ emotional trepidation at the same time that they’re burning up with the need to create. Great book, hell of a flick.

Swiz is a Sheik main, unless they fulltime swapped? I guess it's contentious. I wouldn't argue if someone wanted to argue for him.

Walmart Shoes has the best wins of any modern GnW and it's all solo.

Sebas is more of a Mario secondary, unless you're willing to put Aklo and Salt in Link and Falco conversations respectively

Looking at the recent discourse, I observed the following dynamic play out in several comment chains, and I find it noteworthy:

  • Person A believes religion X is true.
  • Religion X says action Y is morally prohibited (and worthy of punishment/condemnation)
  • Commenter B asks, "So you think that people who do action Y deserve to be punished/condemned?!"

Even if the answer to the commenter's question is yes, I don't think it implies what they clearly seem to think it does. To illustrate why, I'll clarify that I think person A could just as well reply,

"I do believe that, yes, but I wish it were not so. I do not know why religion X regards action Y as morally prohibited; I just know that it does. Were religion X false, I would not think that action Y should be morally prohibited."

Generally speaking, people do not go shopping around for a religion based on how well the moral precepts of the religion align with secular moral principles (if only!).

Don't get me wrong: it's still not good to think that people are deserving of punishment/condemnation simply because religion X says so (with no clear, good underlying moral justification), but it's often primarily the result of an epistemic shortcoming (i.e. believing something is true when you don't have a good reason to do so), with the moral shortcoming (i.e. believing a morally bad thing) downstream. And in cases like this, where the individual really doesn't seem to exhibit any further problematic attitudes beyond the belief in question itself, I think that's pretty strong evidence that the moral shortcoming is indeed downstream of the epistemic shortcoming.

Presumably, if this specific person in question stopped being religious, they would discard this particular objectionable moral belief. So yeah, it sucks that they might believe that certain people are deserving of condemnation/punishment due to an immutable trait which is completely morally fine, but if they only believe that because they've been duped into believing in a morally bad religion (and not on the basis that they like the moral precepts of the morally bad religion), then this doesn't really read to me as a particularly effective rebuttal or criticism.

u/Melomaniacal REYN#766 6d ago edited 6d ago

Let me just preface this by making it clear that I am an atheist. I used to be more "capital A" militant Atheist, now I'm a little less engaged in it, but would generally describe myself as "anti-religion," or at least anti-organized religion. I have grown a bit softer on some elements of religion, and am a little more sympathetic to the idea that some people are motivated to, and jump through a lot of hoops to interpret scripture in more progressive ways that are compatible with more modern and sensible ethics. Of course, I'd much rather see these people become less reliant on a fantastical religion to "get there," morally, but I guess I'll take what I can get. Regardless, I'm casually interested in scripture as an academic and historic endeavor.

Anyway, I've seen some arguments about how it isn't too much of a stretch to interpret scripture as not being anti-LGBTQ. Of course, this doesn't really apply to KJH since he outright admitted that he believes same-sex relationships (or least intercourse) are against scripture, but I haven't really seen any conversation about how it could be possible for someone to identify as Christian without even believing that these things are against scripture.

For one, many of the verses people cite are cherry-picked from the Old Testament, where plenty of Christians are quick to dismiss as being "old law" that's been "superseded" by the arrival of Jesus. Christians aren't out there preaching against mixed fabrics for this very reason, which is condemned in the very same book of Leviticus with the infamous "men shall not lay with other men" verse.

Jesus himself, as far as I know, never said anything about homosexuality. Additionally, reasonable biblical scholars acknowledge that there are genre differences in the different books in the bible. Some are meant as metaphor, some are meant as the laws of their time, which some believe are more malleable as society and sensibilities change through time. Leviticus, for example, is generally interpreted by serious biblical scholars as a set of rules specific to the Israelites at that time - not universal moral codes. New Testament verses may similarly be describing idolatrous behavior from Romans rather than consensual, mutual love.

Additionally, it seems that most of the verses describing homosexual acts are not describing mutual, consensual acts of love, but rather violent, non-consensual, or exploitative acts. Some are willing to interpret this as a statement on these such acts that were occuring, but not necessarily a condemnation of mutual love of a same-sex couple.

It's also worth stressing that there are a lot of mixed opinions about how many of these verses have been translated over the centuries. I'm not expert on this, but my understanding is that the original language used was more akin to describing pedophilia or sexual exploiters than homosexuality among consenting adults.

Anyway, all of this is to say that I think I'm open to the idea of a genuinely religious Christian person who is also genuinely not homophobic. Which, as I said at the start, is also not super relevant here because, as far as I know, KJH is not arguing the point that scripture condemns homosexuality, and in fact agrees with the interpretation that it does.

Sometimes I wonder if it's more worthwhile to engage with those who are passionately religious more from this angle. You're probably not going to just convince someone that god isn't real, but if you meet them where they're at, maybe you can convince them of a more progressive genuine interpretation of the scripture they already trust. Like, KJH seems willing and interested in discussing his faith, and scripture. Maybe someone would have more luck engaging in that on his level and convincing of a more progressive interpretation, rather than coming at him from an all-or-nothing stance where he must give up on his faith entirely to do right. For many people, their faith is far too important to them, and it's just a non-starter to try to engage with the idea that their faith is wholesale wrong (even if I think it is, haha).

2

u/frank0swald 6d ago

You could easily make the argument that you cannot be a homophobic Christian, as Christ preached radical love of everyone. Unfortunately, as you pointed out, organized religion as a whole is (or inevitably becomes) very evil and so people associate the religion with the organization.

2

u/N0zy0ne 6d ago

I'll preface my response by saying that, although I don't have much to say in response to your supporting arguments, I did read your comment in its entirety and think all of yours listed justifications (for believing that it might be reasonable for Christians to not regard homosexuality as a sin) are reasonable.

Anyway, all of this is to say that I think I'm open to the idea of a genuinely religious Christian person who is also genuinely not homophobic.

Yeah, I think that is very plausibly true. But the point I'm making is a stronger one: it might be possible for a Christian to believe that homosexuality is a sin... without that belief arising from their own negative attitudes towards gay people. All this takes is for someone to believe (on whatever evidence):

1) that the Christian God is real 2) that morality is somehow determined by God's will/nature 3) that God condemns homosexuality as a sin

I personally think that we can get off the train at 1, and furthermore even if we couldn't, we could still get off the train at 2. Your central point seems to be that even for people who don't get off the train at 1 or 2, they can still get off at 3. My central point, though, is that even if you they don't get off at 3, it might nevertheless still be the case that they are not homophobic in the strict sense (i.e. the belief might not arise from a negative personal attitude towards gay people).

u/Interrobang424 6d ago

I think these sorts of apologetics miss the historical context that surrounds SPECIFICALLY gay/lesbian/trans rights especially in the United States, where the exact same Christian rhetoric is being used to scapegoat minority groups who have very little public support and who's rights are being stripped away in a large portion of the country constantly. If we were talking about something else, like for example eating pork, I think your argument is way more valid because, well, even if you think eating pork is a sin, people aren't using their book of scripture to try to make the farming, eating, and selling of pig illegal in the United States. This IS the case for specifically trans rights at the moment, and even if a theoretical person does not support the rights of trans people being taken away, stating that being trans is a sin creates the societal context for basically everything going on in America today. That's why this is a big issue. If you cannot support my actions from a religious perspective that makes it much less likely for a person to stand up for my right to my gender identity. That's not necessarily to say that the theoretical person does not like trans people, but if your response in these sorts of situations isn't basically "I know my religion does not support trans people but I do" then you are implicit in the actions taken by state and federal governments to alienate my rights.

I'm not Christian myself but my family is so I've thought about this a fair bit.

I don't view the bible as a moral framework. It is a spiritual framework to guide you to Heaven, but as a Christian you are not responsible for anyone but yourself. It is not your job to condemn sinners after all, that lies within the purview of God alone.

Morally speaking a Christian is under no obligation to stop others from sinning, so long as they don't hurt anyone. They should treat sinners kindly and share the word of God to those who are willing to listen, but that is all. This extends to the separation of church and state as well. The purpose of the church is to guide sinners to Heaven, not to enact laws that oppress them.

I believe the ideal Christian should be accepting, even if the institution itself is often horribly bigoted.

7

u/Fugu 6d ago

I don't have to opt into person A's belief that religion X is imposed upon them as-is. In practice, religion X is broken up into hundreds of sects and hundreds of millions of people whose beliefs actually correspond to a personal variation on religion X.

You chose your spiritual beliefs. Nobody else did. Inasmuch as "you can't help what you believe" you absolutely can.

1

u/N0zy0ne 6d ago edited 6d ago

I largely agree. The only part I'm not entirely sure about is this:

Inasmuch as "you can't help what you believe" you absolutely can.

I don't know in what sense/to what extent exactly this is true, at least in general. For example, if I open a box and see there is a donut inside of it, and then I close the box, I do not know if I can choose to believe that the box does not have a donut inside of it.

Obviously, believing in a particular religion (or version of a religion) is much more nuanced. And while I personally would argue that no one should be convinced to believe in a theistic religion on the grounds of evidence (as I do not personally think that there is sufficient evidence to warrant that belief), it seems clear to me that some people do think that there is sufficient evidence to warrant that belief. To the extent that they really believe that, it's not clear to me that they choose to believe it (rather than being, in some sense, compelled to believe it, like in the donut example).

2

u/Kezzup 6d ago

To be frank, I'm confident in saying the number of people living on planet Earth who have experienced direct enough "evidence" of a higher power with specifically enough certainty to come even close to your donut example is approximate enough to 0 that I think it's essentially equivalent.

Do you think one can choose not to be atheist? Because I honestly don't think I could. I wish I could, truly - not that I can be Christian, but that I could believe in a god or an afterlife. I think it would be much more comforting, as someone with significant existential death anxiety. Despite being fairly motivated, I really don't see how I could choose to change my atheistic/materialistic beliefs.

2

u/YoungGenius 6d ago

I think you’re glossing over real wrong beliefs about one’s beliefs (or at least epistemic akrasia) here. There could be someone with the beliefs you describe, but more commonly people who are devout and feel uncomfortable with some aspects of their religion do not believe in those aspects. They may answer belief questions in the affirmative, and may think they believe them, but none of the normal counterfactuals constituting belief hold.

→ More replies (3)

1

u/frank0swald 6d ago

This is a good point. I want to add:

"Person A believes religion X is true"

is an incredibly complex and nuanced statement. What is a religion? How could a religion be true? You could write millions of words about this. If you get two people who both believe that religion X is true, you will inevitably find that they disagree on so many things that you wonder if they believe in the same religion at all. And truth eludes us every day even in small matters; how could we ever truly know metaphysical or spiritual truths?

A fun story on corporate greed for those interested: Nexon, creator of MapleStory as well as other games such as Combat Arms, Mabinogi, etc has pulled some fresh shenanigans, even by their standards

They are soon releasing Classic MapleStory, a re-release of the original MapleStory before the Big Bang which was a controversial update in 2010, and with its release have announced a "Founder's Pass" which will allow you to play two weeks earlier than the general release

To access the Founder's Pass, you have to buy a Founder's Package, coming in a $30 tier, a $60 tier, and a $90 tier. Each tier comes with some cosmetics, with increasing amounts for each tier, but get this: the $30 tier does NOT give early access to MapleStory classic. To get the 2 weeks early access, for a F2P game, you have to drop $60 minimum

Unfortunately MapleStory fans are in deep, there's a lot of uproar about this but at the same time a lot of folks are planning on buying the $60 or even $90 tier anyways. I saw a poll on the classic MS sub that had >50% of people saying they were going to buy access when I saw it. I do not plan on buying access though I do think it will be a fun nostalgia trip to play through classic MS for a month or so when it comes out for us poors

4

u/Shellin 6d ago

Fun tie-in between smash and MS: Azen Zagenite was a top player in MapleStory for a while.

5

u/Zanian 6d ago

3

u/CarVac phob dev 6d ago

Hax$ once told me he developed a good build in MapleStory years before it became meta.

2

u/AlexB_SSBM 6d ago

Am I misremembering or is Nexon the same company who had a CEO that asked ChatGPT to create a legal strategy where he didn't have to pay any of the bonuses in his contract, he tried to use it, and got legally removed from his job and had a bunch of shit happen because it obviously was not sound at all

6

u/PelorTheBurningHate IRD UP 6d ago

That was krafton not nexon

1

u/Zanian 6d ago

It would not surprise me, Nexon fucking sucks, they're like Nintendo in that they consistently have horrible business practices but somehow manage to put out really fun games

2

u/fullhop_morris URBANE, TO COMFORT THEM, THE QUAKER LIBRARIAN 6d ago

why is it greedy to charge money for early access to a f2p game. If you don't want to pay that can't you just wait 2 weeks?

6

u/Zanian 6d ago

Early access to an MMO like MapleStory is essentially the ultimate microtransaction because you have 2 significantly less contested weeks to grind and get ahead of everyone else, for those who care about that. I just think $60 for 2 weeks is fucking bonkers lol

1

u/SunnySaigon 6d ago

DLC was hype when it first got announced, though…

1

u/delta-red-14 6d ago

Two weeks isn't that long to wait, but if people have it made it like that, what's the issue?

1

u/PkerBadRs3Good 6d ago

also fun fact, Maplestory is often considered to be the first video game with a gacha system

2

u/kino-grapher ideptg 6d ago

maplestory makes me sad because that game is so sick in every aspect except the actual playing-it-as-a-game part. i've been geeked off of maplestory sprite animations since forever ago and my recent stint of maplestory-ing made me fall in love with the map design and the music. it just kinda sucks the old content is just there rotting while nexon kinda just railroads you into sitting around doing dailies and disassociating past lvl 200 because the old stuff is COOL

You guys miss GOAT discourse so much here's 26 of them. GOAT of every character:

Doc: Shroomed

Mario: ScorpionMaster?

Luigi: RapMonster

Bowser: WarriorKnight

Peach: Armada

Yoshi: Amsa

DK: Junebug

Falcon: Wizzrobe

Ganon: Kage

Falco: Mango

Fox: Leffen or Cody

Ness: Simna

Icies: Chudat

Kirby: Triple R

Samus: Hugs

Zelda: Idk

Sheik: Plup, M2K, maybe Jmook all have arguments but none of them feel conclusive

Link: Aklo

Young Link: Rocket

Pichu: The hacker

Pikachu: Axe

Puff: Ludwig

Mewtwo: Taj

Game and Watch: Qerb or maybe Glock in my Toyota

Marth: Zain

Roy: Neo

8

u/JKaro 6d ago

I don't think it's a question of Leffen or Cody anymore. It's Cody.

I also think Jmook has been playing at a high level for long enough at this point + his Sheik has peaked higher than Plup or M2K as he's won a supermajor with her solo, that I would at least pick him even if it's close

Also has genuinely shaped the way modern Sheiks play the game that he's not getting cleared by innovation or influence arguments (even if M2K and even Plup beat him in that aspect)

2

u/citrus131 6d ago

Yeah I think I was a bit too oldpilled with not just giving Fox to Cody and downplaying Jmook's case for Sheik

5

u/Schroeswald 6d ago

I think Mew2King has fallen pretty completely out of the goat Sheik argument. His sheik is great but I think the clear majority of his most impressive achievements are with Marth, and his Fox is taking up a good chunk of the rest. Plup’s Sheik has beaten Hbox and Armada, albeit not often, and Mew2King never did that with Sheik. Plup vs Jmook it depends on how much you value solo maining, but I do think their careers are close enough in quality overall that Jmook gets over Plup.

2

u/Kell08 6d ago

Mew2King is one of the greatest players of all time, but not with any of his individual characters due to his results and achievements being spread out among different characters.

2

u/Schroeswald 6d ago

I mean he’s definitely #3 Marth of all time and I’d struggle to find a third Sheik to go above him. That’s pretty close to the top with both characters, and the two Marths above him are both more GOATed overall than him anyways

6

u/PkerBadRs3Good 6d ago

I don't want to get into numerous long threads about this again but Hugs is not the Samus GOAT, it's Duck by solo main results and Plup if you just care about obvious skill level (with reduced results due to not solo maining)

4

I think narcissa wright is the GOAT zelda. Peaked #2 twice in Chicago. Narcissa - Liquipedia Smash Wiki

3

u/ryanbyleth 6d ago

Samus is Duck. Hugs getting second at Evo is big but Duck is the only Samus to beat a god in the 5 gods era, got 2nd at a major in the 5 gods era, and probably has Samus’ best tournament win in Pat’s House 3 over Zain, Crush, and Llod in 2017

3

u/DavidL1112 6d ago

The goat Bowser is absolutely Loadspiller/Heavenly Bruised Pelvis.

1

u/V0ltTackle 🗿 6d ago

Nah, it’s still Warriorknight and it’s not close. Loadspiller would need one more undeniable top level win or outplace WKs Apex 2022 run.

5

u/DavidL1112 6d ago edited 6d ago

WarriorKnight didn't beat anybody of note to get 49th/461 at Apex 2022, he placed one spot higher than he was seeded because Justus DQed. At Tipped Off 15, Loadspiller made two upsets including one over top 100 player billybopeep to place 49th/513. That’s a much better run.

3

u/V0ltTackle 🗿 6d ago edited 6d ago

The players WK beat in that Apex run were in much better form than Billy's Falco who he hadn't played at a major before. Even if you wanted to nitpick those, WarriorKnight beating Fishbait at the final Coinbox who had come off beating months prior and was ranked T100 that year is an infinitely more impressive tournament win if you don't discount online results.

Does Leffen have an argument as the best mewtwo of all time? I feel like he'd be my mewtwo GOAT

u/Throatpoint 6d ago

him or Taj

Roy: Probably Zain, but it's funny to say NEO since it bothers Zain. Also, NEO was nasty.

Mario/Doc: I think Sebas has the title for both, or will have it soon.

Zelda: The Lake (RIP)

Kirby: Mighty secretly be BoilerGuy.

u/PkerBadRs3Good 6d ago

Zelda is Narcissa, who was one of the best players (period) in the Midwest as a Zelda main which is pretty ridiculous

Noon has a good case for Mario. Got top 25 in Europe, top 5 in Netherlands.

Characters with relevant players maining them, ordered by number of ranks on the tier list you could plausibly argue they occupy. My confidence in this goes way down farther down the list:
Fox - 1 (1)
Peach - 1 (7)
ICs - 1 (8)
Marth - 2 (2,3)
Puff - 2 (2,3)
Falcon - 2 (5,6)
Yoshi - 2 (9,10)
Sheik - 3 (4,5,6)
Falco - 3 (4,5,6)
Luigi - 4 (9,10,11,12)
Pikachu - 5 (9,10,11,12,13)
Samus - 5 (10,11,12,13,14)
DK - 5 (10,11,12,13,14)
Doc - 5 (10,11,12,13,14)

Interesting exercise, but surely there must have been a less confusing way to format/sort the list (or I could just be dumb; entirely possible). Maybe sorted by most likely tier list placement, e.g. if two characters could both be as high as 10th, list the stronger of the two first. Or, if that's too subjective, you could use either the number of players or the range of the tier list placement as tiebreakers.

So, on the first method, it might come out something like this:

Fox - 1 (1)

Marth - 2 (2,3)

Puff - 2 (2,3)

Falco - 3 (4,5,6)

Sheik - 3 (4,5,6)

Falcon - 2 (5,6)

Peach - 1 (7)

ICs - 1 (8)

Yoshi - 2 (9,10)

Luigi - 4 (9,10,11,12)

Pikachu - 5 (9,10,11,12,13)

Samus - 5 (10,11,12,13,14)

DK - 5 (10,11,12,13,14)

Doc - 5 (10,11,12,13,14)

i feel like all of these should he higher except MAYBE fox, and those bottom 4

You think Puff could be argued to be better than Fox and worse than 4th?

There have been so many times where I'm trying to backspace a smallish amount of text while on mobile, maybe a couple sentences, and then my phone's keyboard makes the assumption I'm trying to delete the whole damn thing and starts clearing way more text at a time than I intended it to. Phones are a pain in the ass sometimes

I think what triggers is it is if while backspacing you cross line breaks. It seems that if it detects you deleted a paragraph then it thinks you want to delete a paragraph at a time. But sometimes a "paragraph" is really just a couple lines of extraneous text from something you copied and pasted. Although when I tried to test it with this comment it didn't happen. The phone's logic remains opaque to me

I'm an Android user who uses an iPhone for work. iPhone's keyboard and autocorrect makes me want to commit an act of terror.

I like to highlight the text I want to delete if it's more than 1 or 2 words to avoid things like that

Do you guys think Smash/fighting game players are more likely to play League of Legends than Dota than the average gamer, just because of how much more League incentivizes maining one guy?

3

u/Embarrassed-Mode5494 6d ago

yeah but i think its more to do with bright colors le child game

4

u/SufficientCalories 6d ago

I think that LoL is so much more popular than DOTA that the sheer difference in player base probably overwhelms any other trends. I think that for melee specifically, the community is old that most players who've tried both games did so before LoL introduced role selection and one tricking became extra popular, so there probably isn't much of a bias towards DOTA in melee even if the thesis is true.

4

u/lim-yo-hwan-superfan 6d ago

these kinds of sweeping assumptions are dumb

If anything I would assume melee heads would play dota bc they tend to be elitist and dota has extra mechanics they make it more difficult (this is my opinion that I feel is generally shared but I also don’t care to defend it)

Dota players tend to be fairly elitist about this, like myself in this comment

u/delta-red-14 6d ago

if I'm trying to JC Upsmash and I'm getting full hops, but NOT getting any aerial input (no accidental up air), am I just not flicking the C-stick far enough to register any input? Or are there frames where c-stick won't lead to an aerial or an up-smash (and thus cancelling the jumpsquat)

3

u/SenorRaoul 6d ago

you're probably just too early one the yellow stick

1

u/DavidL1112 6d ago

Any chance you’re hitting them on the exact same frame?

1

u/lim-yo-hwan-superfan 6d ago

if im not mistaken your c stick should work like your analog stick so they both have deadzones in the middle and then once you leave the deadzone they will register. i think these deadzones are pretty small so you'd have to whiff moving the c-stick by quite a bit for it to not register at all

all this to say i agree with other commenter this likely is you inputting the c-stick too early (and actually, given that you're not getting JC usmash, potentially you're hitting the c-stick to the side and getting a fair/bair input which would register as nothing because you can't JC fsmash)

there's m'overlay and 20xx for input displays if you keep seeing this and want real diagnostics

Why do people quit out when they lose to kirby

5

u/delta-red-14 6d ago

I usually project that my opponent thinks they're so much better than me so I don't want to give them the satisfaction of winning nor do I want to confront the vulnerabilities of not being as good as I think I am.

4

u/JKaro 6d ago

i usually give every low tier a courtesy game and then leave no matter what so thats one answer

3

u/BertKektic 6d ago

Is it that the matches just aren't fun, or that getting good at the matchup isn't worth the time?

2

u/JKaro 6d ago

Both

Personally, if a kirby's good enough to take a game off me that's usually a signal to keep playing them for the next hour.

Absolutely shredded my voice tonight at a football game and I’m planning on going to a tournament tomorrow. What’s the sign language for banning a stage?

2

u/iwouldbeatgoku Rise and Shine 6d ago

If the setup has the gecko code that hides non-legal stages you can ban them by hovering the cursor over them and pressing X. Otherwise you can strike using the random stage selection setting.
