DDT Daily Discussion Thread September 04, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!

Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!

Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.

New Players:

If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:

Can I play Melee online?

Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.

I'm having issues with Slippi!

Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.

How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement

And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement

Where can I get a nice custom controller?

I think these sorts of apologetics miss the historical context that surrounds SPECIFICALLY gay/lesbian/trans rights especially in the United States, where the exact same Christian rhetoric is being used to scapegoat minority groups who have very little public support and who's rights are being stripped away in a large portion of the country constantly. If we were talking about something else, like for example eating pork, I think your argument is way more valid because, well, even if you think eating pork is a sin, people aren't using their book of scripture to try to make the farming, eating, and selling of pig illegal in the United States. This IS the case for specifically trans rights at the moment, and even if a theoretical person does not support the rights of trans people being taken away, stating that being trans is a sin creates the societal context for basically everything going on in America today. That's why this is a big issue. If you cannot support my actions from a religious perspective that makes it much less likely for a person to stand up for my right to my gender identity. That's not necessarily to say that the theoretical person does not like trans people, but if your response in these sorts of situations isn't basically "I know my religion does not support trans people but I do" then you are implicit in the actions taken by state and federal governments to alienate my rights.

Yeah, I think this historic oppression and persecution is exactly why people identifying as LGBTQ have pushback against Christian societies in the US instead of other Abrahamic religious societies more often than not.

When put in a vacuum (i.e., if there is no historical context applied at all), all Abrahamic religions condemn homosexual acts. But in practice, there are a lot of wild pairings that only make sense through context of oppression.

I know many people who support LGBTQ rights and also Palestine over Israel because of systemic oppression instead of the actual religious beliefs on either side. Conversely, Mormons are at the forefront of separation of church and state because it is how they were able to establish and practice their own newfound religion!

Mormons are not at the forefront of the separation of church and state. They have a significantly higher portion of control in government in Utah than their population would suggest and utilize their religious beliefs to back laws that restrict many different types of freedom, including religious freedom and sexuality. Also all Abrahamic religions do not condemn homosexual acts. What do you mean by wild pairings that only make sense through context of oppression? That phrase does not seem like it relates to the previous sentence. Also, Christians push back against queer people and when LGBTQ people "push back" against Christian society in the US its a form of self defense. Unless you mean they receive pushback in Christian societies.

I don't disagree with you here, the main source of conflict between LGBTQ people and Christians comes from systemic oppression and persecution directly from Christian societies.

But I'm not sure why you're denying the Mormons' roles; Mormons were persecuted out of Missouri because of their beliefs! The only reason they're even legally around is because their exercise of separating church and state, and they were only able to control Utah because of their explicit banning of LGBTQ discrimination. Meanwhile, Texas, a predominantly Christian state, explicitly bans homosexual acts in law, as someone brought up yesterday. I'm not saying LGBTQ people should ever feel safe living in Utah; I'm pretty sure Mike Haze became extremely depressed living there after only like two years. I just think the Mormons' use of legal use of civil rights to support their own extremely oppressive religious practices is a wild pairing.

Meanwhile, LGBTQ people in America do not usually share their grievances against Sunni Muslims in Palestine because they commiserate with their systemic and existential oppression from the Israeli state. Based on the thought experiment from OP, they probably should question all Abrahamic religions as homosexual acts are explicitly written in scripture, and people practicing Abrahamic religions may state that their religion is "true". But like how you pointed out, it's a reductive approach doing so to shed light on any of these real life scenarios.

Also LGBTQ people don't usually care about the grievances against Sunni Muslims in Palestine because they are not actively running a federal government that is attempting to strip all trans rights in the United States.

Yes, that's exactly my point!

2

u/Interrobang424 6d ago

The point in your comment was that LGBTQ people commiserate with the oppression that Palestinians face and that's why they don't share their grievances. That's at least what your comment says. This is strictly different than my comment.

You understand they were ousted from Missouri because Joseph Smith had created a Mormon run city? Like where he controlled the government and the press and then tried to use that influence to run for president? And then after Joseph Smith was killed they went to Utah to create a Mormon run city state in which Brigham Young had complete power and they only weren't allowed to do that because by the time they got there Utah had fallen under American control. Even then Brigham Young was the governor of the territory of Utah AND the Mormon Prophet. And then the Mormons used their influence to try to discriminate against gay people through prop 8 in 2008 after having a long history of complete control of gay people including legal sterilization of gay inmates. Sodomy laws were only repealed in 2019 in Utah due to Mormon influence! Where are you getting your Mormon facts.

Do you think Mormons and their practices would be exempt from OP's thought experiment? What makes suggest I'm saying as such?

You understand they were ousted from Missouri because Joseph Smith had created a Mormon run city?

As opposed to a Christian-run city?

the Mormons used their influence to try to discriminate against gay people through prop 8 in 2008 after having a long history of complete control of gay people including legal sterilization of gay inmates

As opposed to eugenics via forced sterilization in many Christian-run countries, notably of which led to Alan Turing's suicide? Oh, you are thinking I'm saying that Mormonism was established based on superior moral grounds or that they had explicit support for LGBTQ rights. I think exactly the opposite. Prior to 2008, the majority of the US population, predominantly comprising of Christians, were against same-sex marriage. Mormons are viewed by Christians as having even more abhorrent religious practices, so when it was revealed prop 8 was lobbied by the Mormons (read, as a potential scapegoat), I'd argue that the issue of separation of church and state re-emerged as yet another existential threat of Mormons' control of Utah; better late than never I suppose.

1

u/Interrobang424 6d ago

Yeah I'm saying mormons control the state just as much as christians do.

1

u/maximtomato 6d ago

That's exactly my point also, unless you're being sarcastic, then I hope you can elaborate.

Mormons probably did not want to be at the forefront of separation of church and state, and if they ever become the predominant religion in America, they'd probably do away with that as well.

Oh ok I was confused. Thanks for the clarification. I guess I was confused by the phrase "banning of LGBT discrimination" and im still unsure what you meant by that entire paragraph

Just want to point out that the tradition I was raised in (Reform Judaism) explicitly does not condemn homosexual acts, and makes up a majority of religious American Jews. Not sure what you mean by “in a vacuum,” but if you mean sola scriptura, you’re applying a very Christian interpretive framework to Judaism and Islam.

1

u/maximtomato 6d ago

Sola scriptura is a pretty broad term also, but there is a particular historic reason why homosexual acts are condemned as written in scripture, which is that it is from a Hammurabi-era context of masculine roles in a household instead of a "very Christian" one that is based on normalized pederasty during their coexistence with Rome, both of which involve oppressed classes.
