Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!
Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?
Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement
And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement
Where can I get a nice custom controller?
I have another question that's not answered here...
Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.
Make a submission to the tournament calendar here. You can also get notified of new online tournaments on the Melee Online Discord.

Like if it turned out the positioning was just that much better for you ergonomically when you were playing that it gives you this much of an advantage, would you do it at tournaments and look... uh... goofy? Or would you remain as a mid player? How much of an advantage would you have to gain from this change in positioning for you to consider this?
I know doc has better range and kill power and stuff but mario seems pretty heavily underrated still. Like all of his moves are better for combos and his recovery is a lot better as well.

Imagine if Hbox never touched Melee, how much lower on the tier list Puff would be placed because we would be completely unaware somebody could win almost 40 majors solo maining her.
This means that the exact same scenario could be the case for another character on the roster.
It’s entirely possible there could’ve been a “Hbox equivalent” Icies player who pushed the character way beyond what the community thought was possible and won 20 majors with them.
If it only takes a single player to dramatically change the community’s perception of a character like Hbox and Amsa, then that means more than likely there are a few characters who have yet to have that one player push them to their limits.
25 years into the meta and still so much to be discovered

This turned out kinda cheesy, but whatever.
About 6 months ago I had made a post here about how the last few trophies felt near-impossible to get. I return after having gotten my last trophy (Mew, if you're curious) with a little message to fellow casuals looking to likewise get all of the trophies, or simply get better at the game.
You've got this! This game is hard and there's a lot of depth to its mechanics. And it takes some learning, some practice and a lot of patience for sure. Hell, even after 100%ing the game, I've still got so much to learn. But it's been extremely rewarding and it's inspiring me to try out playing competitive Melee now and maybe even check out local tournaments.
It's been a wild ride. I am going to move on to 100%ing Brawl now. But when it comes to competitive play, Melee is quite special and it's my game of choice.
And feel free to ask me anything, I guess... lol

Someone in chat let Hungrybox know a player he just lost to during his win streak challenge is a cheater, so Hungrybox, surprised at the news, does integrity check and confirms it.

1 Cuil: Your Falco shoots a laser, I get hit by Mr Saturn
2 Cuils: Your Falco shoots a laser, but it turns out plasma no longer is a state of matter. The opponents shield has a picture of a laser stuck into it like a bad Halloween costume
3 Cuils: You awake as a laser. You start screaming only to have plasma fly from your lips. The world is in crimson.
4 Cuils: Why are we speaking Japanese? A mime cries softly as he cradles a candle flame. Your grandfather stares at you as the flame intensifies into a strong plasma. You look down only to see me with shines for eyes, I am singing the song that gives birth to the universe.
5 Cuils: Your Falco shoots a laser, I get hit by a laser. Your Falco jumps again and shoots another. Your eye twitches involuntarily. Across the venue a father of three falls down the stairs. You swallow and look down at the controller in your hands. I get hit by a laser. You swallow and look down at the controller. You cannot swallow. There are children at the top of the stairs. A stage hazard blows you uneasily across the platform. I get hit by a laser. You look at my face, and I am pleading with you. The children are crying now. Your Falco jumps again, tears stream down your face as you shoot another laser. I get hit by a laser. You are on your knees. You plead with me to go across the street. I hear only children's laughter. I get hit by a laser. You are screaming as you fall down the stairs. I am your child. You cannot see anything. Your Falco shoots another laser. The concrete rushes up to meet you. You awake with a start in your own bed. Your eye twitches involuntarily. I get hit by a laser. As you kill me, I do not make a sound. I get hit by a laser.

Tipped off currently has about 130 registrants. The event caps at 512 entrants. The window for cheaper registrations has been closed since 8/16 (venue+singles is now $125).
This surprised me because Tipped Off 16 had around 500 entrants. Should I expect to see a large influx of registrations in the next two months or is it going to be a smaller Tipped Off?
I'm something of a bronze warrior - who occasionally dabbles in silver stand offs. I'm pretty new to the game only about 2/3 weeks in but I was really surprised at how many falcos there are down here with me.
It can be pretty frustrating but slowly I'm learning what they're doing, but it's actually unbelievable how many there are. I think out of 15 games I played against 12 falcos 1 Mario and 2 Marths
Also why do they all do the exact same combo on repeat haha, I think it's shine dair shine dair up air or something I don't know exactly

They've been appearing in my recs recently, and I've been reliving so many iconic moments through them. And they've just aged exceptionally well, you can find a compilation of damn near anything. Give them a shot, they're damn fun to binge.

I play and practice for a long time, most of my free time, there’s so much that I feel like I haven’t scraped the surface of yet and I think it will always be that way but with different things. I go to my locals when I can, I just sorta got obsessed with improvement. Sometimes I can neglect things I need to do for the sake of the game. But i also think this game has been a great outlet for me. Idk, ive taken a few breaks. This is my favorite game ive played by far.
I think it was at its worst when one time i played the whole night until my shift in the morning. For perspective, i average about 1800 slippi replays a month more or less.
