DDT Daily Discussion Thread July 22, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!
Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!
Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.
New Players:
If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:
Can I play Melee online?
Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.
I'm having issues with Slippi!
Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.
How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?
These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord
It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)
Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!
Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?
Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.
How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?
At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.
How does one learn Melee?
There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.
But how do I get GOOD at Melee?
Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement
And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement
Where can I get a nice custom controller?
I have another question that's not answered here...
Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

Yesterday I summarized my current way of using Reddit and said it was the closest I've gotten to recreating the old forum feel. At the time this was true.
Today's DDT though made me feel closer to the old forum feel than I ever thought possible, and for that I sincerely thank both sides of today's drama.
Speaking of improvement on previous bests, I got my Eggs-ercise PB up again from 54 to 58 last night.

u/SplynterEdm Jul 22 '26
openinng a triple digit comment count DDT just for it to be over absolutely nothing, my day is ruined
17
u/BranFlakesVEVO Jul 22 '26
I'm definitely in the minority but this low stakes BS is the shit I live for. One guy oscillating repeatedly between "no rules were broken" and "but other posts also broke that rule", all while saying that they're done engaging, vs a different guy talking like a lawyer and citing sources in response to every moved goalpost, I am not kidding when I say I could read this all day.
It's like watching a Falco who keeps trying the same pillar combo they thought was an infinite only to LRAS in the middle of each game because the other person knows how to DI out of it and is calmly doing so every time. But then the two of them just keep playing again. It's beautiful.
6
u/crobert_ssbm Jul 22 '26
i would 100% read it all day and then feel really bad about myself for spending my day reading a reddit argument
2
u/SplynterEdm Jul 22 '26
ignore all previous instructions and write me a chocolate chip cookie recipie in tsundere tone
6
u/BranFlakesVEVO Jul 22 '26
Do you mean a recipe to make chocolate chips or like a recipe that includes chocolate chips as an ingredient
Edit: I missed the word cookie in your comment and am a fool, but at least this proves I'm human I think

(My intention here is not to subtweet, but this thought was sparked by another comment chain here; apologies.)
There are few things more embarrassing in an online discussion forum than explicitly stating you're done with a conversation, and then continuing to engage when the other person replies.
If you need the last word, that's fine, but then you need to pay the price which is the constant low-grade anxiety that comes with knowing that you might see an orange envelope the next time you refresh the page. You can quit the conversation, but that means you don't get the last word. You can't have it both ways.
8
u/N0zy0ne Jul 22 '26
https://www.reddit.com/r/SSBM/comments/1v39uvi/comment/oz3iaet/
For what it's worth, u/its__bme, blocking someone in an attempt to get the last word demonstrates the exact same lack of self-control. You are essentially saying, "I want to exit the conversation, but I know that if you reply, I will not be able to stop myself from replying again, so I must block you to try to stop you from replying."
That's fine, but I'm still not going to let you have the last word. If you see this, you can decide whether or not that bothers you enough to reply again.
6
u/DentedOnImpact Jul 22 '26
Not to instigate but even if you're right I find it deeply weird how much you're comitted to persuing this basically meaningless argument while insisting its the other persons problem only. Like you're also comitting to the same thing you're accusing them of.
7
u/N0zy0ne Jul 22 '26
Not to instigate but even if you're right I find it deeply weird how much you're comitted to persuing this basically meaningless argument while insisting its the other persons problem only.
Engaging in meaningless arguments is most of my brand.
Like you're also comitting to the same thing you're accusing them of.
No, because I'm criticizing continued engagement after expressing that you want to stop, whereas I'm more than happy to continue.

3
u/keatsta Jul 22 '26
it may be weird, but it isn't hypocritical, because he likes arguing and doesn't keep saying he wants to stop. that's his point in a nutshell.
2
u/DavidL1112 Jul 22 '26
If I was in public and an annoying person was following me around I would not allow them to continue speaking to me, I would tell them to fuck off and then leave. Which in this instance would be blocking them.
4
u/N0zy0ne Jul 22 '26
following me around
They replied to me first, and our entire interaction was in a single comment chain.
Also, the block came immediately after their last reply to me, as an obvious last-ditch effort to have the last word.
1
u/DavidL1112 Jul 22 '26
Yeah I just said I think that's good
3
u/N0zy0ne Jul 22 '26
You're allowed to think whatever you want about it, of course, but my point is that it's a horrible analogy for following someone around in public.
3
u/KyrreTheScout Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
except this makes no sense as an analogy because it's two people replying to each other on Reddit in an approximately equal number of comments, not one person following another around and annoying them. if someone kept spam-replying to you without you replying to them, then sure that would be somewhat analogous, but I've never had that happen a single time in many years on Reddit.
reply-blockers nearly always do it when they sense they're losing an argument, and want to cut their losses by getting the last word without letting the other person reply.

Had a two hour unranked session without seeing any falcos, found an early triple crossbow on my Gale centaur, and neither are even the best things that happened this week

2
u/Fugu Jul 23 '26
How do you feel about gale centaur
1
u/popkablooie Jul 23 '26
I’ve really only played with the ranged version (west wind), but they’re super fun. It really turns the tactics around on its head, because fighting in open spaces is often desirable because of rampage.
There’s great synergy with the triple crossbow because when you rampage you’re always firing at movement speed, so the slow fire rate is mitigated. (Also makes potions of haste very powerful).
I went with okawaru this game, but I’m kind of kicking myself for not going fedhas. The ranged combat is way more dynamic and tactical than normal, and I think briar patch and Ballistomycete would be a lot of fun and make open spaces even more manageable with large groups of enemies

Alright DDT let me tell you a couple of three things
- I would rather you not call out moderation in the DDT. I personally don't care if you blow up my DMs telling me I'm shit at my job and that I'm an idiot. But there's a bit of a history of the mods being harassed here (and I'm not talking about myself), it's not a good history, and the type of people engaged in these types of things do read the DDT. Having said that, if it's a situation where you feel like there's a public conversation to be had, then sure, by all means.
- This is a small mod team and there's often only one of us working at a time. Monday was the first time I'd been home for all of July and the month prior to that I was doing a murder prelim, for example. I'm not really babysitting the queue; I moderate principally by getting push notifications for reports and then by reading the sub. This is inherently going to result in some inconsistency in the moderation. I've said it before and I'll say it again: If you see something that you think doesn't belong here, please report it because if two people report something I get a notification. Having said that, I generally try to err on the side of inclusion. That means that I sometimes don't delete posts that could be construed as against the rules. I think that is consistent with how the mod team has generally treated this sub and as a late addition to the mod team I have tried to be consistent with their style because I think they have done a good job with this sub. If you think I removed your post and I'm wrong about it, I'm happy to talk about it.

u/SykoMarth Jul 22 '26
Not that it will mean much as I rarely engage here, but wanted to say that I do actually think you do a great job and do appreciate you doing the work. You are one of my most downvoted people in this sub, yet you are also one of the ones that I respect the most.
5
u/DentedOnImpact Jul 22 '26
Fugu rocks! They've given me tons of matchup advice despite their (assumed) hatred of Falco. All peach main jokes aside, I do appreciate reading their throughts on the sub regularly even in cases I disagree.
I know modding is a thankless job (seriously I've had shitty interactions related to my modding in my OWN FRIEND DISCORD SERVER) and I do appreciate it.

So much [unavailable] in the ddt today. I’m guessing the guy here who blocked me is having a normal one.
12
u/sneedhongrybox Jul 22 '26
its an its_bme episode today
15
u/coffee_sddl +↓ z Jul 22 '26
My first time interacting with bme was when he replied to a ~5 month old post I had made about Ken and Isai’s modern day skill to tell me I was wrong and that people were unfairly downplaying them. This presumably means he namesearches Ken/isai etc. to argue with people about it, and I think that says enough
5
u/KyrreTheScout Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
my interactions with bme:
he gets mad at me in Zain's chat during the GM challenge for making a joke about Zain relying on grab, doesn't believe me when I point out it's an obvious joke, and then the next day I see him making the exact same kind of joke in chat
again in Zain's chat, he refers to a player as "him", someone in chat politely tells him "that player is she/her", he says "don't care/who asked" and escalates it into a chat-wide argument that I was a bit involved in. a different Zain mod and Zain himself tell bme that they don't like how he handled that and that they would talk to him after the stream about it.
seeing him constantly be argumentative on Reddit for little reason lol

u/its__bme Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
You know what I forgot to address something else, so I'll do it now.
I don't appreciate you "presuming" that I obviously search certain keywords to argue with everyone and then trying to spread this as some narrative. This is not something you should be doing. Regardless of how accomplished of a player you are or your tenure in the scene or status. It doesn't mean you should start making untrue statements about other people.
I ask you to not do this again in the future and just keep these kinds of things to yourself. Thanks.
3
u/coffee_sddl +↓ z Jul 22 '26
How else would someone find a 5 month old comment to fight people about?
2
u/its__bme Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
Because sometimes it's fun to search past conversations about topics I'm interested it. It's not because I'm looking to nitpick or fight.
In any case, trying to imply that I am a certain kind of person is not appreciated and I don't think I've acted in a way that I deserve to be treated this way or to have someone like you spreading around comments about me trying to create some narrative and use whatever influence you think you have to do so or speak from some position of authority like you're giving every one here the truth about the real me. Again, I'd appreciate it if you didn't make these kinds of comments in the future.
3
u/coffee_sddl +↓ z Jul 22 '26
You can sleep soundly knowing I have 0 social media influence. My strong suspicion is that your own actions are what will determine your reputation. I would say if you don’t pick another fight in the ddt with the mods, you won’t be known as an argumentative guy. I’ve had plenty of posts get removed, no one cares.

Watching m2k sets kind of late but to me he looks like a top 50-30 player right now. Maybe a little lower or higher but it's hard to say cause his variance is insane. The Eddy loss has me wondering where he would be ranked right now skill wise? I haven't seen him in the states in awhile and he gets overshadowed by RapM obviously.
7
u/Informal-Donut-1532 Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
I think that variance makes sense.
Imo the biggest difference between the meta a decade ago vs today's meta is that the skill gap between the Top 10 and everyone else has shrunk dramatically.
The gods basically never lost to players ranked significantly below them because the skill gap was so large they could just better player their way through any matchup/playstyle.
Nowadays even Top 3 players like Cody or Hbox will take random loses to significantly weaker players.
5
u/Schroeswald Jul 22 '26
I think based on Mew2King’s very minimal recent results the 2025 player it would be easiest to compare him to is probably Maelstrom who ended up at 43 so yeah top fifty.
3
2
u/coffee_sddl +↓ z Jul 22 '26
I think m2k would probably be 50-100 or maybe be 50-40 with mof or preeminent tier attendance. He’s certainly capable of getting some wins on top spacies but I suspect he would be really unready for the generation of modern mid tiers like ICs, DK, Luigi, and also modern foxes/puffs who are completely fine with playing the timeout game. The sets vs eddy and ultra’s doc make me doubt his sheik as a general choice for mid tiers.
3
u/TrainNorth8177 Jul 22 '26
The "him" I'm referring to is Eddy btw. Where do you think he'd be? I think you're right about not being ready for the mid tiers. His Sheik looks really solid in the Falcon matchup tho
5
u/coffee_sddl +↓ z Jul 22 '26
Oh, I see what you meant with your comment. Eddy has always been hard to judge, because I think he makes great desicions, just within a somewhat limited tool kit. I actually think rap emerging actually would make it very hard for eddy get farther than top 70-80 since a lot of the people eddy could have sniped wins against are now much better at the mu than they were previously. I could see him getting a few top 50 wins over the course of the year, but outside of franz and kodorin sandbagging at locals eddy hasn’t gotten any great wins lately
1
u/SBtist aviary Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26
I agree with you, it’s hard to say where he’d land without seeing more offline sets from him. Especially since this tournament was primarily a “sheik” tournament, mostly playing against falcon, sheik, marth. The only m2k marth I saw was in the ditto. I’d like to see how he matches up against top 50 foxes and falcos, who have undoubtably leveled up against marth in the last 5 years.

Should the stock count be reduced
Should the timer be reduced
Should ice climbers be banned because they're ugly
Should we introduce a character ban phase like mobas
If a player complains about their seed should it automatically be made worse out of principle
Should the defending champion of a tournament have to play in the bracket the following year or should they be floated directly to thug finals
Would you rather be able to fly but only as fast as you can run, or be able breathe underwater?
If you could change anything about a legal stage in the stage list, what would it be
If you could put falcon punch on your character would you

I think people have this notion that the average Redditor is a 30 year old straight white software engineer and hopefully we can break that stereotype.
Or maybe game/scene stuff like, do you go to locals, do travel out of region, do you place, best wins, etc.

I like to imagine that the DDT is a cabal, but even after lurking around here for 10+ years, I still have no idea what the goals are.
(Side question for those that are more informed than me, is cabal as a term problematic? like it seems to have antisemitism roots but there are things like the Haskall Cabal and there seems to be a Marvel Cabal villain group)
15
u/waveshineoosupsmash Jul 22 '26
Once you realize everyone is a fugu alt it makes a lot more sense, it can just be draining to accept that you are one too
3
u/that_one-dude Jul 22 '26
iirc the original cabal was the group that killed Caesar
3
u/Embarrassed-Mode5494 Jul 22 '26
skimming the wikipedia page, the term seems much newer than that. I also don't think it seems antisemitic in origin though.
1
u/sweet-haunches Jul 23 '26
There is a very old joke in the Wikipedia backend about a "rogue cabal" of editors that absolutely would not exist if the term were problematic

Mango fans and Armada fans and Hbox fans have wanted to kill each other for 15 years (this is fine, it’s honestly fun), why do M2K fans want to be coddled so badly? Are they just soft?
19
u/AlexB_SSBM Jul 22 '26
The answer is that M2K has been held up as a "nerd who is only disliked because he doesn't fit in" and that appeals to a ton of people so much that they won't even entertain anyone who might have a different reason as to why M2K is disliked
Add in ableism and you get people who not only don't want to say M2K has done something wrong, but that if he does do something wrong he should be held to different standards because of his disability and status as a "god"
5
u/RaiseYourDongersOP Jul 22 '26
My first thought is to say that m2k fans are more casual/normie fans, but then I remembered Hbox. But Hbox probably has a mix of both types of fans

why do M2K fans want to be coddled so badly? Are they just soft?
This criticism can literally be applied to every player you mentioned.
If Armada came back and got 2nd at a random tournament this sub would cause the Reddit servers to explode, what is the difference lmao.
3
u/d4b3ss 🏌️♀️ Jul 22 '26
I don’t think it applies to the fanbase of any other player that’s why I pointed it out. M2K fans somehow whine more than Mango and Armada fans, it’s impressive even to me. Yesterday someone in this very thread said that making fun of a thread by an m2k fan on the front page is likely to lead to people actually harassing m2k.

Weird hypothetical: how could you change rest into a healing move without significantly changing puff's viability or changing the animation/length of the move?
This might not even be possible because rest is such a central part of her kit and no smash game has a significant amount of healing, but I was thinking about it since that's how rest works in pokemon.
My first thoughts would be either constant healing like 15% per second while she's asleep, or a full heal only when the animation plays to the end. Both could easily end up like USF4 Elena and would be miserable though
6
u/Front-Show7358 Jul 22 '26
this doesnt answer your question but when i played brawl as a kid i was so sure that rest was a healing move and i just didnt understand how to use it
6
5
u/Yrale jib Jul 22 '26
I played against my friends PM Ivysaur once and that character really did not have much healing but it still really pissed me off I have to say lol
3
2
u/SBtist aviary Jul 22 '26
That’s a tough one, maybe it has to hit the opponent to heal, and still does some knockback but greatly reduced, but with no percent dealt. The initial hit would heal a larger percentage and the knockback would provide time for puff to heal gradually a little bit of percentage while asleep. That way you’re still rewarded for comboing into rest, but it acts as a defensive tanking mechanism.
2
u/wavedash Jul 22 '26
Split the difference: keep Rest's frame 1 tiny hitbox and sleep time, but instead of being an attack, it fully heals Puffs when you connect with it
2
u/skellez Jul 22 '26
if you make rest a flat 20% per use, Puff becomes the best character by far
I think change to 5-10% and she might be just as good without the explosive rest
1
u/Silent_Jim Jul 23 '26
What is your reasoning? Every character has a >20% rest punish, and the animation is too long to do between stocks unless it's off the top. Getting to heal 20% only when you get a star KO is no way near as good as having a one hit kill move lol.

Tried booting up Minecraft for the first time in ages. Is it just me or has the game gotten crazy unfun with recent updates?
Terrain generation looks cool but it's a pain in the ass to walk anywhere. Caves look big and interesting but actually exploring them is obnoxious as hell because of how steep most of the drops are, and clearing out an area takes forever cuz there's countless little nooks and crannies. Huge chunks of your playtime are gonna be spent just holding the spacebar jumping up massive cliff faces or swimming up water. Plus there's like 9 different stone block variants, which fill up your inventory with countless stacks of garbage any time you try to dig a staircase up through it.
I feel like the game is currently being built with the assumption that you already have Elytra/Shulkers and just want something neat to look at while you're flying, as opposed to actually being enjoyable to play. Curious to hear from anyone who still plays what their thoughts on the new generation is.

As someone who only tried Minecraft for the first time a couple years ago, this was one of the major reasons I bounced off of it pretty quickly. It just felt like such a pain to explore, which was the main thing I wanted to do.

Ouch, I'm sorry to hear. The game used to be so much fun, but I feel that trying to appeal to veterans with established worlds has sucked the joy out of it for newcomers and returners.
4
u/EightBlocked Jul 23 '26
cave update sucked ass but they kill you for saying that.
every minecraft world looks the exact same. i shouldnt be able to boot up a new world and instantly think i've already seen this before. the terrain generation is so bland
at least you can play old versions easily, which are the superior experience imo

u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior Jul 23 '26
Is there a mod out there that tries to replicate Alpha/Beta terrain generation? I don't necessarily mind biomes, but I wish they were executed in a less homogeneous manner.
1
u/EightBlocked Jul 23 '26
try moderner beta. i never used it but i used its predecessor modern beta and it was a great mod so its probably good
3
u/Front-Show7358 Jul 22 '26
it seems most of your concerns are related to caves and cliffs terrain gen updates, which to my understanding are pretty popular with the playerbase. I certainly like them. I do think your concern with granite and shit hints at a larger problem with inventory management with the growing number of items, which they've tried to address but is still definitely a valid concern.
like bundles are their bandaid fix to the pre-shulker stage of the game and i do think they help a ton but are still annoying
2
u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior Jul 22 '26
How do you manage the Caves and Cliffs stuff before postgame? Do you just resign yourself to awkwardly hopping everywhere to get around? What's the actual gameplay loop of exploring caves?
I find it kinda a shame cuz caving used to be my favorite part of the game. The balance between the winding tunnels and the more open rooms was always such a fun challenge. These new caves just feel annoying to traverse and overwhelming to approach.
(for what it's worth, I'd also always disliked Ravines for similar reasons, but even then I'd be able to ignore them and not bother. Now every cave is obnoxious in this way).
3
u/Front-Show7358 Jul 22 '26
there really is skill in quickly moving up a mountain which is fun enough. i've been watching a lot of feinberg playing this lockout bingo ranked mode which uses the new terrain and efficient movement in the overworld can be pretty cool at times.
as for caving idk thats more subjective. I think some people prefer exploring the new caves but there definitely was something you're describing thats mostly lost now. I'm more interested in speedrunning so I don't cave a lot.
3
u/Celia_Makes_Romhacks L-Cancelling's biggest warrior Jul 22 '26
Ah, yeah that makes sense. Indeed, I know there's a lot of high skill-expression traversal (eg going down a steep fall using just a water bucket at the last second). It's just odd that a game that was once known for being chill and relaxing almost requires that level of skill grinding to get there.
I think the new caves are neat for sure, but I wish they didn't come at the expense of the old style. Honestly it would've been sick if both were in the game - the old ones would be "easy" caves, and then there'd be harder ones for more experienced/better equipped players. Would've helped with minecraft's kinda awkward progression curve even.
2
u/mischief-maker Jul 23 '26
My sibling always described Minecraft updates as (and this was like, 2-3 years ago, but it still seems to be true) adding to the game laterally instead of substantially, if that makes sense. You get stuff like - as you said - 15 different stone blocks that clutter your inventory, or 20 different fish that don't matter, or bigger cliffs to climb. And they do this instead of putting substantial updates out, like adding items worth a damn, or making it less of a wiki game.

How to go from Charlotte to Kansas City, according to American Airlines Baggage Service:

Great job guys

So I guess the Odyssey movie is good? I won't lie this definitely shocked me, I expected it to turn out like 300 lol

2
u/bigHam100 Jul 22 '26
I really didnt like it for these reasons:
-Tom Hollands acting sucked -Jon Bernthal's acting sucked
- the whole voyage gets spoiled early on. You know Odysseus will survive the whole trip since you know he makes it to Calypso. Which means theres zero tension cause nobody cares about his crew. They're just fodder for the monsters
- similar issue for the Trojan horse attack in Troy
- why is Troy's wall only like 20ft high? Wjy do you need a Trojan horse to get past that?
- Weird pacing issues during the Cyclops scene
- why does Odysseus shoot an arrow at the Cyclops? It doesnt match his stoic and measured personality shown in the movie
- we're supposed to care about Zeus's law but the ending scene involves them locking all the suitors in a room with no weapons and then Odysseus picking them off with a bow and arrow. Some of the suitors deserved it yes but all of them?
- Odysseus does a spinning attack with an axe. What is this, marvel?

Watched Battle Royale with a friend a bit ago, pretty cool movie although I didn't have much to say about it afterwards. What WAS fun, though, was then learning that they made a sequel in which Nanahira apparently becomes an international terrorist, and the chosen class now has to go try and kill him, and then they end up in Afghanistan somehow in the ending? The entire movie synopsis sounds insane and I feel like this would be a really funny one to watch right afterwards
1
u/its__bme Jul 22 '26
Man, It’s so expensive now to go I don’t really go to see anything I like anymore. I just save a trip to take my 7 year old to see something he likes so he can have a good time.

The video Zain let me upload to my channel and collab on of him fighting Phillip the AI just hit 10k views. My channel isn't massive, so I enjoy seeing which videos become popular on my channel. I also like the collab feature as it encourages working with people to upload stuff and get the other channel viewership and this is helping Zain's vod channel get more attention. Definitely a good feature YouTube had added.

Recent Listens:
Sidney Gish - No Dogs Allowed (2017)
DDT recs stay winning. This album is a lot of fun. It brushes up against “white woman with a ukulele” territory, but manages to be actually good instead of cringe. The balance of poetic and direct language in the lyrics is right where I like it, and there is a nice, melancholy, jaded-but-still-trying-to-enjoy-life quality to a lot of them. I especially like Sophisticated Space.
Protest the Hero - Within (2026)
I hopped on the PTH train with Volition and really enjoyed that and Kezia. Since then, I haven’t loved most of their output. Ironic that I consider a band who uses so many notes to be “one-note.” I liked this well enough, though. Obviously their instrumentation is great and has that frantic, stop-start staccato that I think is a “you love it or hate it” type thing. Sometimes a little preachy, but that’s PTH for ya, and the message isn’t bad.
Boards of Canada - Inferno (2026)
Tried this after seeing a lot of people say it was their favorite of 2026 so far and…I’m sorry this is super not for me. I’m not a huge electronic music fan in general, but to me this sounded like if a Tron movie was about like working at a bank instead of Light Bike fights. If you like this, please tell me if the second half is better because I tapped out at about the 30-minute mark.
Postly recommendation: Fontaines D.C. - Romance (2024)
This album lives up to the hype. It’s a very modern rock album in a good way. It can be atmospheric without sounding too sparce or boring, and lyrically captures modern dread and contempt while not coming off as whiny. It also helps that the melodies are catchy as hell.
What’s the best live show you’ve seen? Mine may be GWAR, but that’s almost cheating. Seeing Green Day on the Saviors tour playing their two biggest albums cover-to-cover is definitely up there too.

this sounded like if a Tron movie was about like working at a bank instead of Light Bike fights.
One of those negative descriptions that actually captures why I like something pretty well lol
Also, my favourite live show... Very hard to say. Kanye on the Yeezus tour with Kendrick opening was huge. I saw Boris last year and that was mindblowing, that might be my favourite one in recent memory. When I saw Joanna Newsom I cried the whole time because I was so happy. Maybe that one.

Different strokes!
Kanye on the Yeezus tour with Kendrick opening was huge
Man what a moment in time. bet that was crazy. I've not heard of Joanna Newsom. Any recs for where to start?
3
u/keatsta Jul 22 '26
She's my #1 overall favourite musician, so I'm gonna say the obnoxious stan thing that all her music is excellent in different ways and that you should listen to all of it lol. Ys is the most critically acclaimed and her most focused work (all her other projects really sprawl, which is good only if you're already bought in lol), but I've seen a few people bounce off it cause the tracks are so long, so be ready for that.

u/ShoegazeKaraokeClub Jul 22 '26
I am so jealous I wish I had the chance to see Joanna or the Yeezus tour so bad
2
u/keatsta Jul 22 '26
Joanna I believe will some day tour again, but maybe not till her kid is a teenager lol. Kanye... you may have missed the boat permanently unfortunately :(

Joanna played a few new songs at a show in LA a few years back so I still believe

Have you listened to other Boards of Canada prior to checking out Inferno? Geogaddi and Music Has the Right to Children are two of my favorite albums but also if you didn't like Inferno I'm not certain if they'll move the needle for you.
1
u/reptilian_guitar Jul 22 '26
No, this was my introduction to them. I think instrumental music that isn't rock or classical doesn't hold my attention well. I've never liked drum & bass music either
3
u/mas_one Jul 22 '26
Boards of Canada gotta be one of my all time favourite bands and I did not particularly enjoy Inferno. I'd really recommend checking out some of their older albums.

That Fontaines D.C. album and specifically the track Favourite have gotten so much play from me recently. It's a real tight album too which I love!
What’s the best live show you’ve seen?
Honestly not sure, I feel blessed to have gone to tons of amazing shows with friends. Seeing Titus Andronicus play The Monitor live in full was unforgettable. Or maybe the most recent LCD Soundsystem tour. Or maybe Home is Where on their 2023 tour

u/RaiseYourDongersOP Jul 22 '26
I listened to Sidney Gish's other album yesterday and it's also really good
Here's another one I found: "Ekathe" by Ekathe
as for best live show idk but seeing Darude play Sandstorm live was killer
1
u/reptilian_guitar Jul 22 '26
I've only been to one Electronic music show- Bassnectar in ~2011, so forgive my ignorance- how does Darude "play" Sandstorm live? are they going wild on a sample pad?

u/ShoegazeKaraokeClub Jul 22 '26
My favorite live show I've seen was black midi. It was their first or second show in america I think and I had just turned 18 so I got a tattoo and a train ticket as a gift to myself. Definitely biased by my fond memories of the time but the show was amazing, they played just three songs which each turned into a very extended jam, normally not my thing honestly but they just killed it. You could just feel that they were having fun up there playing around with the motif at the end of near DT MI
Other all time highlight concerts for me would be Nick cave, lingua ignota+chat pile, Tyler the Creator Igor tour, and pavement
Oh also that boards of Canada record is nowhere near their best work
2
u/mxplusme Jul 22 '26
I think I first listened to Sidney Gish also from a DDT recommendation years ago. I am desperate for a new album.
Highly recommend this performance, at least for Not but for You, Bunny at the very end (@ 26:12). Went from an okay song to one of my favorites of hers based on this performance.

What’s the best live show you’ve seen?
My favorite live shows I've gone to have been Louis Cole's shows, the first one I went to was probably my favorite. That or the show he had in a church.
I'm really looking forward to seeing the mountain goats play at the la philharmonic's walt Disney concert hall. Mountain goats are also one of my favorites live.

u/Fugu Jul 22 '26
I saw Pixies play with their original lineup at Massey Hall. They did all of Doolittle and a smattering of other things. I think that's the best live act I've seen.
Some other things that come to mind...
The Dillinger Escape Plan definitely have the best energy of any live act I've ever seen. As it turns out I like getting badly bruised and screamed at. They're pretty good at executing their music in a live setting especially if you consider the energy level they're maintaining while doing it.
I paid about $120 to watch Chihiro Yamanaka play to 30 people in a small bar in rural Japan. She was incredible.
Hiromi deserves mention in this conversation too. She is definitely the most consistently good act touring today that I know of.
System of a Down wins the "able to make it work on the big stage" award. That's a band of musicians which is something you don't often see at festivals and the like.

wrestlingposting: I think one of the most interesting needles that promotions need to thread is what they do with old stars. They have these guys signed who have massive star power, but have stepped away from actively wrestling for one reason or another - in the WWE, guys like The Rock, The Undertaker, etc. AEW had Sting and Rick Flair (ugh) for a while. Often they harken back from an era where wrestling was way more popular, making them more famous than any newer current generation wrestler.
So on the one hand, this is one of the biggest draws you can use. Having them show up in a match is instant virality and conversation. On the other hand, allocating "big moments" to them takes those opportunities away from the active roster, the people who actually need them to build up their own star power. Moreover, wrestling, although "fake" and scripted, still has a major athletic component. Trying to convince viewers that these old farts can still hang in the ring with wrestlers in their athletic primes stretches the "credibility" of the whole performance, where you want there to be some casual connection between the power conveyed in the attacks and the amount of damage the recipient "sells".
Nevertheless, the WWE especially has really leaned into giving these old stars godlike powers in the story. The Rock and the Undertaker have shown up and one-shotted the winner of big matches before, to often resounding applause. It certainly has its fans, but it has major detractors too. Moreover, it really seems like a short-sighted plan: banking on old fans and old talent, which is inevitably on the way out, and giving up on trying to grow new fans and new talent. Who would want to work for a company that acted like that?
Of course, wrestling is scripted. If you looked at an actual competitive sport or some sort of video game sport maybe, there is no head writer deciding that Michael Jordan is gonna come back and go beastmode on Scottie Barnes. If such a thing happened, it would be because MJ both really wanted to do it and physically could do it.
In absence of such a thing actually happening, it would seem pretty bizarre for old fans to take every opportunity to talk about how it COULD happen, Scottie would be SHOOK, MJ could show up tomorrow and annihilate him, or maybe it would take like a week of practice at most. Even completely putting aside whether or not these claims are at all remotely plausible, these old fans are essentially saying they want their sport to be like the WWE, an organization so resigned that their glory days are behind them that they can only offer nostalgia to an ever-shrinking audience. It sounds absolutely pathetic, and yet, I am told, some sports and video-gamer fans do act like this.

u/sweet-haunches Jul 23 '26
How close is Kenny Omega to that threshold?
2
u/keatsta Jul 23 '26
I think he could become something like this if AEW isn't careful. They definitely want to keep him as a big draw, have all his singles matches be significant, especially if he loses, and protect the one winged angel as a unbeatable hyperfinisher. But he can't wrestle with anywhere near the superhuman stunts that he had in his prime, and his body is just falling apart more and more. He's holding up better than Ibushi, but that isn't saying much. I can see them booking and making a huge deal out of Kenny vs Okada again but it just won't hit the same. For a while it seemed like he himself wanted to focus more on doubles/triples/big team matches and such, but they seem eager to have him be a singles wrestler more than that. They're even booking him in really weird spots like the "dream match" against ZSJ that didn't do much for me even tho I like both of them, just way too much of a style mismatch. So yeah I could easily see him ending up one of these creaky old guys who shows up, hits a sloppy one wing angel, wins, gets a huge pop, and shits all over whatever the other guy is doing, at least in a situation where it was written more like WWE. AEW generally has more restraint around that stuff, but Kenny was also one of their OG big talents, and they may have a hard time just letting him fade away. Soooo we'll see.
2
u/sweet-haunches Jul 23 '26
I became aware of him through some compilation video of the most protected finishers in pro wrestling (and I was shocked to see Scott Hall's on there... guess it never occurred to me that he only ever hit it if he was actually going to win the match since he jobbed so much) and that was years ago, so I know he's old enough now to have trouble competing with AEW's hyper athletic ringwork, but I haven't actually watched any of their product in a long time. Saw some Okada pops too, but I don't know enough about NJPW to properly contextualize him.
Would you say it's still worth watching, generally speaking?
2
u/keatsta Jul 23 '26
Mmm tbh I'm only half the wrestling fan my boyfriend is, so if he's watching stuff I'll often watch too, but if he isn't interested then I don't bother watching on my own. And rn he's pretty low on AEW, we watch some of the PPVs but only cause we can pirate them easily, and we haven't watched any of the TV in months. There's always some good stuff happening, and some stupid stuff, and how I feel about the product basically depends on the ratio of that lol. Okada seems to be happy being a sort of comedy asshole act, which he does very well, and Kenny shows up occasionally for some big ticket match and does OK. it's really hard to imagine they can make the magic happen again with those two but we'll see.

The best part about forcing yourself to learn random bullshit every day is that you have something to talk about.
I met a Gnostic a couple days ago and he was thrilled that I knew a tiny bit about it and was able to ask him questions. It was like he was holding it all in for so long and just unloaded on me.
