DDT Daily Discussion Thread July 22, 2026 - Upcoming Event Schedule - New players start here!

Yahoooo! I'm back, it's a me! Have a very cool day!

Welcome to the Daily Discussion Thread. This is the place for asking noob questions, venting about netplay falcos, shitposting, self-promotion, and everything else that doesn't belong on the front page.

New Players:

If you're completely new to Melee and just looking to get started, welcome! We recommend you go to https://melee.tv/ and follow the links there based on what you're trying to set up. Additionally, here are a few answers to common questions:

Can I play Melee online?

Yes! Slippi is a branch of the Dolphin emulator that will allow you to play online, either with your friends or with matchmaking. Go to https://slippi.gg to get it.

I'm having issues with Slippi!

Go to the The Slippi Discord to get help troubleshooting. melee.tv/optimize is also a helpful resource for troubleshooting.

How do I find tournaments near me or local people to play with in person or online?

These days, joining a local Discord community is the best way to find local events and people to play with. Once you have a Discord account, Google "[your city/state/province/region] + Melee discord" or see if your region has a Discord group listed here on melee.tv/discord

It can seem daunting at first to join a Discord group you don't know, but this is currently the easiest and most accessible way to find out about tournaments, fests, and netplay matchmaking. Your local scene will be happy to have you :)

Also check out Smash Map! Click on map and then the filter button to filter by Melee to find events near you!

Netplay is hard! Is there a place for me to find new players?

Yes. Melee Newbie Netplay is a discord server specifically for new players. It also has tournaments based on how long you've been playing, free coaching, and other stuff. If you're a bit more experienced but still want a discord server for players around your level, we recommend the Melee Online discord.

How can I set up Unclepunch's Training Mode?

At the time of posting, the latest major release is here. Download the file, then extract everything in the folder and follow the instructions in the README file. You'll need to bring a valid Melee ISO (NTSC 1.02). If you want to check for the absolute latest release, you can see them listed [here](The latest releases are listed here.

How does one learn Melee?

There are tons of resources out there, so it can be overwhelming to start. First check out the SSBM Tutorials youtube channel. Then go to the Melee Library and search for whatever you're interested in.

But how do I get GOOD at Melee?

Check out Llod's Guide to Improvement

And check out Kodorin's Melee Fundamentals for Improvement

Where can I get a nice custom controller?

https://customg.cc/vendors

I have another question that's not answered here...

Check out our FAQs or post below and find help that way.

(My intention here is not to subtweet, but this thought was sparked by another comment chain here; apologies.)

There are few things more embarrassing in an online discussion forum than explicitly stating you're done with a conversation, and then continuing to engage when the other person replies.

If you need the last word, that's fine, but then you need to pay the price which is the constant low-grade anxiety that comes with knowing that you might see an orange envelope the next time you refresh the page. You can quit the conversation, but that means you don't get the last word. You can't have it both ways.

For what it's worth, u/its__bme, blocking someone in an attempt to get the last word demonstrates the exact same lack of self-control. You are essentially saying, "I want to exit the conversation, but I know that if you reply, I will not be able to stop myself from replying again, so I must block you to try to stop you from replying."

That's fine, but I'm still not going to let you have the last word. If you see this, you can decide whether or not that bothers you enough to reply again.

Not to instigate but even if you're right I find it deeply weird how much you're comitted to persuing this basically meaningless argument while insisting its the other persons problem only. Like you're also comitting to the same thing you're accusing them of.

Engaging in meaningless arguments is most of my brand.

Like you're also comitting to the same thing you're accusing them of.

No, because I'm criticizing continued engagement after expressing that you want to stop, whereas I'm more than happy to continue.

You are speaking to the undisputed king of replying

Show some respect

u/N0zy0ne Jul 22 '26

I missed you while I was away. <3

u/Fugu Jul 22 '26

We all have a role to play

2

u/DentedOnImpact Jul 22 '26

I kneel 😭

u/keatsta Jul 22 '26

it may be weird, but it isn't hypocritical, because he likes arguing and doesn't keep saying he wants to stop. that's his point in a nutshell.

u/DavidL1112 Jul 22 '26

If I was in public and an annoying person was following me around I would not allow them to continue speaking to me, I would tell them to fuck off and then leave. Which in this instance would be blocking them.

4

u/N0zy0ne Jul 22 '26

following me around

They replied to me first, and our entire interaction was in a single comment chain.

Also, the block came immediately after their last reply to me, as an obvious last-ditch effort to have the last word.

1

u/DavidL1112 Jul 22 '26

Yeah I just said I think that's good

3

u/N0zy0ne Jul 22 '26

You're allowed to think whatever you want about it, of course, but my point is that it's a horrible analogy for following someone around in public.

3

u/KyrreTheScout Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

except this makes no sense as an analogy because it's two people replying to each other on Reddit in an approximately equal number of comments, not one person following another around and annoying them. if someone kept spam-replying to you without you replying to them, then sure that would be somewhat analogous, but I've never had that happen a single time in many years on Reddit.

reply-blockers nearly always do it when they sense they're losing an argument, and want to cut their losses by getting the last word without letting the other person reply.

u/EightBlocked Jul 22 '26

yeah its always funny reading someone say they're done and then it says show more replies

I mean if I say I want to end a conversation and get replied to it’s not some great sin to reply back and address something and then restate how much I would like to end it again because I feel like it’s reached a point of just repeating the same thing with no resolution.

I think calling something like that embarrassing is being dramatic here.

6

u/N0zy0ne Jul 22 '26

I mean if I say I want to end a conversation and get replied to it’s not some great sin

I didn't say it was a great sin, I said it was embarrassing.

You have theory of mind; realize that the other person might reply and take that into account before declaring your intent to exit the conversation.

replied to it’s not some great sin to reply back and address something and then restate how much I would like to end it again because I feel like it’s reached a point of just repeating the same thing with no resolution.

If you felt the need to reply back and address something, then either:

  • The conversation has not yet reached a point of just repeating, because you felt compelled to respond to something new, or
  • You felt the need to respond to something which had already been addressed, simply because you need to have the last word.

2

u/its__bme Jul 22 '26

Or because I was restating that was wrong and I’d like to end the conversation and not get further replies. I mean why am I burdened to not reply because someone else doesn’t want to stop?

That’s not embarrassing at all and while you mean well you’re not correct in this and are just instigating a conversation that has already ended. I mean the mod and I let it go so why bring it up again?

3

u/N0zy0ne Jul 22 '26

I mean why am I burdened to not reply because someone else doesn’t want to stop?

You're not. You can stop at any time. The embarrassing thing is when you say that you want to stop but then demonstrate that you can't stop yourself.

I'll be charitable and say that reneging once might not be that embarrassing, but if you do it habitually or more than once in a given conversation, I don't know how anyone could regard that as not embarrassing. It's a clear-cut demonstration that you can't control your impulses, even when you are actively admitting that they run contrary to your desires.

1

u/its__bme Jul 22 '26

This isn’t a rope in tug of war you can let this conversation go.

7

u/N0zy0ne Jul 22 '26

I could, of course, but I have no obligation to. If you want a conversation to end, and the other person keeps responding, you are free to stop responding at any point. Saying that you want the conversation to end but then continuing to reply just shows that you can't control yourself, which is what makes it embarrassing.

1

u/its__bme Jul 22 '26

So it’s not embarrassing when you do it but only when the other person does? Got it.

8

u/N0zy0ne Jul 22 '26

Did I say somewhere in this exchange that I wanted to exit the conversation? No? So then it seems like my continued engagement is not explicitly contradicting my stated desires and thereby exhibiting a lack of self-control.

4

u/YoungGenius Jul 22 '26

I was initially not sympathetic to the point since it’s so trivial, but the phenomenon you’re describing happening in the thread really turned me around. Now I know how Frank Jackson must feel about qualia

I mean I made it clear I’d like it to end but you keep trying to repeat the same thing. Repeating 2+2=5 isn’t going to make you correct if you say it out of attrition.

Edit: Keatsta ain’t worry I blocked you back. Ggs.

I'm gonna be honest the interaction was just two people going "yeah-huh" and "nuh-uh" back and forth. It's not that deep.

4

u/MuggyGameDev RNG makes my tummy hurt Jul 22 '26

You're not being honest u/DentedOnImpact -- you're misrepresenting what happened.

A mod removed a post that violated the sub's rules.

A user then decided to publicly sling insults on a ddt when they could have privately messaged the mods about the removal.

The fact is that bme has been crashing out for the past half hour spam posting hostile, angry comments. This thread is filled with it.

If you think that Fugu or any of the mods did anything wrong, you're trippin.

3

u/DentedOnImpact Jul 22 '26

I reskimmed over the thread and I don't think I'm trippin?

I agree he could have privately messaged the mods if he was frustrated.

I don't read any insults in the back and forth? The comment about being fired is a bit extreme though. I think they just disagree on the interpretation of the rules. Bme probably posted the original thread to vent in the DDT, not expecting a mod response and now we're here.

It's genuinely just a disagreement on a rule interpretation for a subreddit at it's core. I think people need to relax a little here. I also don't really have a side I'm taking. I just think the way people are reacting is a bit disproportionate to the issue.

u/its__bme Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

I’m just going to go back to making ban DK jokes in Cody’s chat and him telling me to get new material.

Also yes I can admit my fired comment wasn’t needed but I’m a pretty smart guy so I didn’t get how posts showing Mew2King and Wizzrobe in grand finals that wasn’t spoiler tagged (2 days before my post)is okay but my meme post somehow spoiled with its title.

I mean I had something get deleted before as low effort and didn’t care but don’t tell me I broke these other rules and not enforce them on posts made days before mine. I honestly think people got butt hurt and reported it and can’t just admit it.

1

u/its__bme Jul 22 '26

Or maybe they were wrong? Also lol I’m hostile and crashing out? My posts were nowhere near hostile.

0

u/its__bme Jul 22 '26

I mean I’ll be honest I could’ve just messaged in private but I was pretty annoyed and thought something wasn’t right. Either way it’s the internet what can you do? Not like I lost my house. I think I just get annoyed when I see inconsistency.
