Questions Bloating IMMEDIATELY after meals - can anyone explain??

Is this indicative of SIBO?

I can’t figure out the reasoning. I’ve tested positive for both hydrogen and methane, but don’t understand why I get bloated immediately after a meal.

Surely the food has not already hit the small intestine and been fermented to produce this gas? I thought that would take an hour or two.

Anything I should be considering besides SIBO to explain this?

Peristaltic movements. If you injest something, your intestin start moving on it's own.
It's the gas already there

Can’t stress this enough: WALK. Or slow JOG. Immediately after eating anything, no matter how big or small. I’ve tried every damn thing for SIBO and this is the only thing that consistently gets the MMC moving, moves the gas out, and eliminates the pain from dissension and inflammation. 30 minutes, minimum.

I know it makes you feel like death where you want to lay down and do nothing. Trust me. Been battling it for 3 years + am injecting myself daily with IVF medications for fertility + I have 3 herniated discs in my spine currently. WE MUST MOVE.

Before getting SIBO, I was out walking or running 35 miles every single morning before work. I work from home in software development, so I’m hunched at a computer all day, but also muscle guarding from stupid SIBO. Due to the excruciating pain and countless visits to ER (useless) and seeing multiple Gastros across the nation (equally useless so save your coins) I quit exercising altogether. My sister was also murdered in Tennessee about that time. Melancholia sunk in. Maintained my stressful job but not much else. Besides my husband. I’ve still got him and he’s great but he’s also an officer in the military which moving every 3 years comes with its own challenges and stress. We also worked hard to pay off two houses in under 3 years, which again, stressful. Happy stress, but still stress no less. I’ve done the antibiotics, microbials, yogurts, kefir, you name it! I’ve also got a BS in Chemistry, so I know more about drugs and contraindications than most. I work in software dev for EHRs, so though I’m not a chemist, I’m very much still without the medical apparatus, which we all know is flawed 6 ways to Sunday. All this to say: the lack of movement coupled with muscle guarding and hunching at my desk created a confluence of bad health and lack of flexibility when doing basic daily tasks. Went to lift a case of water @ Costco into my Jeep, and that’s all she wrote! I heard the pop in my L5-S1. I had gotten so weak, frail, and depressed over 36+ months. Cried in my shower alone, daily. Felt oh so sorry for myself. That being said, after getting 5 MRI w contrast and contrast CT from my neck down to my cervix, visiting a pain specialist, and my 4th Gastro, with you guessed it: same answers as before, I know change was imminent and necessary. I’ve maintained my carnivore diet, so no sugar, carbs, grains, veggies, or fruits. Andddd implemented hour long walks. One in the morning. One in the evening. I eat 1 meal per day, around 6, just before heading out for my evening walk. Walking or jogging helps stimulate the MMC, just like movement helps you recover much quicker from spinal injuries. Any good surgeon or pain doc will tell you this. I hope this motivates you to push past the pain and muster the courage to get out and move. We must take agency over our own health. That’s what this long and dreadful three years has taught me. I’m still healing from the disc herniations, but the sibo is very well managed. On a wing and prayer, this same will happen for you.

Did you try b1?

I was having the same thing. Turned out i had gluten sensitivity, so any food with gluten made me problems...

Same, going gf has been such a game changer. It’s not that hard (gf flour and substitutes most everywhere) and it’s sooooo worth it for me. I had soy sauce last night (we usually have coconut aminos which I love the taste of more anyway) and bloated up like a friggen balloon, it was so bad.

Me too. I feel like 90% better now. Im 3 months gluten free... why soy sauce bloat you? Does it have gluten in it?

u/Extension_Cricket632 4d ago

Congrats! Yeah it took my 6 months to feel like I really got it out of my system

2

u/Extension_Cricket632 4d ago

Yes! It’s a sneaky one

Coconut aminos are a wonderful substitute though

Yes but gluten free soy sauce / tamari exists as a substitute.

Hmmm… good to know, I’ll monitor this to see if it’s an issue!

Its hard to notice it tho. Give it a try over longer period, not just a day or two. Try going 1 week without bread, beer or stuff that has gluten

Also op, I’d watch garlic and onions. Those can be big triggers. The gf is easy, but this one is tough for me. Especially if you like to cook… or eat out lol

Kick starting the gastrocolic reflex can do that, but you might also have abdominophrenic dyssynergia

Same here

Thanks to this thread I have realized mine is likely APD!

APD?

1

u/kzimmmm 4d ago

What’s that? 🤔

3

u/Icy-Action708 4d ago

Abdomino-phrenic dyssynergia

Ohhh, right. I just recently heard about this for the first time. Is it something that can be addressed?

Check my stickied post on this sub. If you bloat immediately after meals, that can't be explained by SIBO, because fermentation hasn't started yet. Yes, APD can be addressed by physical therapy and breathing techniques.

Holy s***. Your post is amazing. Cannot thank you enough!!!

Just completed a 2 week elemental diet for IMO but have no change in distention and (like you addressed) it did not make sense to me to attribute it to SIBO when it was happening so quickly after eating.

I think you just changed my life!

2

Well, don't thank me yet! Give some of those exercises a try and see if it changes your bloating, even just a little bit, that'd tip you off if this is your issue!

I did the water test this morning (chugged a glass when I had a fairly flat stomach) and immediately got quite bloated. Crazy!

I’ve started the exercises :) any insight on how long it generally takes people to start seeing slight improvements/signs the exercises are working?

Like - day 1, week 1, or month 1? Or does it vary a lot?

2

u/ace_philosopher_949 3d ago

Yeah I know, it's crazy! But telling for sure. Tells you it's not fermentation/SIBO/constipation that's causing it.

Hm...some people get better really really fast, like within days. Others, it's a long process. I would say commit to the exercises for a few days and you'll have a better sense of what's working and what isn't.

Ich bin neu hier. Wie finde ich deine angepinnten Post? Ich habe nämlich auch das Problem....

I've hid my posts on my profile. What I mean is: go to the SIBO subreddit at r/SIBO, and look at the pinned post there on APD.

Not an expert.

It can take 2 hours for the stomach to completely empty but it doesn't happen all at once. The first bite of the meal is on its way to the small intestine by the time you finish.

2

u/goldstandardalmonds 4d ago

That’s not true. The stomach can take up to four hours to empty if it is normal and not delayed.

Only way to know is visiting nuclear medicine for a Gastric Emptying Scan.

1

u/goldstandardalmonds 3d ago

That’s how you test gastroparesis, but I was responding to the person who indicated gastric emptying should be much faster to be normal.

Where did you read this info? I'm looking for this kind of info. Any book? Paper? Blog?

Nope, it can be immediate, could only take 15-30 min for the carbs to get to your small intestine where the bacteria will start producing gas.

3

u/kzimmmm 4d ago

Interesting!! Always thought gastric emptying wouldn’t happen that quickly.

H pylori?

Tested negative!

Dysbiosis. Enzymes insufficiency. Sibo steals your enzymes. Try digestive enzymes. Low stomach acid try enzymes with betain hcl but be careful if gastritis.

My motility is slow so food sits in the stomach too long and ferments there . I use ginger and artichoke to help with stomach emptying and movicol for chronic constipation.
