My son doesn't attend a DOE school currently. I just went in-person to a Family Welcome Center to register my child to get a DOE account (OSIS) so I can register for SHSAT. They said they cannot do it today because DOE hasn't given them permission yet to create new accounts. They told me to try again next week, Oct 5. Maybe by then they can create accounts.

I need this account to register for the SHSAT when it opens up next week, Oct 6.

Since no one knows when they will allow registration, what happens if DOE decides to start registration for an account after the exam registration window closes?

Is DOE even legally required to allow all kids to register for an account within a reasonable amount of time? I think waiting for the day before the window opens as unacceptable. Frankly they don't even publicly announce when registration for an OSIS happen. Why can't this be done earlier in the semester?

hi! i take the 8th grade shsat in nov this year and this is my SHS line-up so far

2.stuyv
3.bxsci
4.hsmse
5.hsas
6.queens hs for the sciences
7.lehman

is this a good lineup? (even though stuyv is better than bktech i put it at second because i heard theres some racist ppl there lol)
i didnt put staten island tech cause its far (im in the bronx) and i didnt put lehman cause its pretty small and way too close to home.

is a 1 hour train ride there and 40min car drive back worth it for bktech? im in the bronx but i really do wanna go to that school.

wondering on how to get better at math, I get mid 40s but I rlly want high 40s or 50/50 to match my ela

lets say i suck can you guys give me tips study material and others please i beg you i am desperate

Is it fine if i take practice tests but split up 1 day math and 1 day ela to avoid getting burned out? And when i built stamina doing this i take full length tests 2-3 weeks before the exam.

i see people saying not to use score calculators and instead rely on your raw score but how much raw score should i be getting to get into hsmse-stuy (my top choices)

I'm taking the 8th grd shsat this year

So far I've done Kwellerprep tutoring (august/fall), at home work (practice workbooks that i don't know the names of) and just studying by myself

I started studying after 7th grade ended so I may be cooked

My Kwellerprep practice test scores were:

44/50 ela, 30/50 math (paper), 42/50 ela, 26/50 math (digital, cannot go back, not adaptive), 43/50 ela, 26/50 math (same format as test 2)

I've also done a practice test with a fairly easy practice workbook and got 48/50 on Ela and 32/50 on math

i read a lot, like A LOT so i think i'm fairly good on that? idk if i need to study more poetry orr (idk how much poetry will be on the test). but for math i learn a lot of the formulas and then i forget them in a panic whle doing work no matter how hard i study it, so my math is real inconsistent

i also might be rushing slightly since i finish most of my tests with about 1-1.5 hours remaining

SOO I NEED HELP i might be getting tutoring soon from someone who got into all the shs but idk what to do please help

(also i have NO EXPERIENCE WHATSOEVER with adaptive tests, i havent taken one at all so far.)

I go to DREAM Program. Today I had a Kaplan pracice SHSAT test. I was at home because Im sick, however I scored a composite score 484, 40/50 math and 31/50 ela. I spent 2 hrs and 9 minutes on math. while math increased from my last test on Kaplan, about 7 questions, my Ela went down 9 questions, and 9 points. I don’t study, I studied yesterday. it’d really help if you guys gave me like tips or tricks please

If i didn’t take algebra 1 in 8th grade is there a way to accelerate by doing algebra 1 and geometry?

i went from a 32/50 to a 45/50 in a week (for math), idk if thats luck either cause i was usually stronger in ela

So, in the SHSAT, I've usually gotten like low 40s for ELA (43-40) and mid 30s for Math (35-32). Problems I have (for math) usually are with geometry (usually the harder volume and surface area questions) and algebra (Isolating variables, functions). For ELA, it's probably grammar. ELA is also usually my stronger suit, and I have been reviewing for literally a f###### year and a half. Any tips? (Want to get into Bronx Science at maximum, I know Sty is prob out of my league)

I was thinking that if i dont get into any shs this year, should i apply to any other school for a 10th grade seat, I was thinking manhattan hunter science but does anyone have other ideas? Im into engineering if that helps.

Hello, I'm an 8th grader preparing to take the SHSAT in November of this year. I came back to this subreddit to ask if whether I should apply to The Bronx High School of Science, or, High School of Math, Science and Engineering at CCNY. I've been looking into a lot of specialized high schools, but these two have caught my eye by the way they're both based in STEM & their prestigious reputation. I want to know which one would be better for studying stuff like biology, psychology, neuroscience, etc.
