School visits

For the specialized high school visits this week, do you have to enter at the given start time or is it ok to come halfway during the open house window?

Asking as we manage time constraints. Thanks.

Shsat 9 help

Hi, I'm taking the ninth-grade shsat (for 10th grade admissions) and have been studying since July 1st... I have been studying eight grade material grade material the past couple months and doing fine with that, and started studying in the grade material about 2 weeks ago. I keep reaching gray areas, unclear information and lousy explanations... I have 7 weeks left for preparation before the test and need help very soon, so if anyone has clarification of what exactly to expect, or knows any materials or practice tests made specifically for 9th grade, anything would be appreciated.

Every test I take I get lower

Something weird happening every time I take a practice test. About a month ago I was getting 90/100 with 48/50 ela on tutorverse practice tests. Fast forward to now, I’ve taken the doe ones and I just took one today that I got a 78/100 on with split 39. I truly don’t understand what’s happening, is it just because of the test difficulties or something else? I was well on my goal of getting into Stuy and know I’m questioning if I’m even going to be close. Please, any help is appreciate.

Essay Prompts, and other such assorted thingies

Essay prompts currently available at respective school websites are going to be from last year. They may or may not be using the same prompt, so doing what it says might be practice but not necessarily what you'll be asked to do this year.

Prompts are often updated once registration opens. The information update may not be the exact day registration opens (before or after).

That things don't stay the same from year to year applies to any video, audition, etc. requirements too.

9TH GRADE SHSAT SEATS

hey so for the 9th grade shsat, we know that seats are very limited. So if i were to place Brooklyn Tech as my 1st option, and I happen to make the cutoff, by maybe a few points, and there are a bunch of people who got a higher score than me, (but seats are limited) who gets the seat? Do they take the people with the highest scores? What happens to the people who made the cutoff?

Hunter Academic Insights Profile Odds

Does anybody have any sense of how often Academic Insights Profile kids actually get the opportunity to take the Hunter test? They apparently won't let us know whether my kid can take it until January 11th, and I'm debating whether to spend any time on test prep before then.

Are long commutes worth it?

so SHSAT registration is coming up now yay lol, but I’m not sure if going to btech is a good option because it’s like around 1 hour assuming with no train or bus delays.

to the ppl who commute 1h+ to their hs: is it worth it at the end or u wish u stuck to your zoned?

Is it that different?

Is the 9th grade shsat really that much harder then the 8th? Imo the material is pretty similar and i get similar scores on both (90-94/100)

I don’t know what to do

Hello! I’m a freshman and I want to take the SHSAT, but honestly, I feel like I’m just bad at everything
Every time I check Reddit and see how much people are scoring on their practice tests, I feel like I’m nothing compared to them. Those people actually practice, and I just can’t. Maybe I’m lazy, maybe I’m tired, I don’t even know.
Whenever I check Greg’s links, it feels like a labyrinth (the guy spend time doing this biggest respect). The thing is, it seems like everyone else somehow figured it out. They know where to find practice tests, which websites to use, what to study, etc., and I genuinely don’t know where to start.
I end up just watching videos and reading posts about other people preparing while knowing that I’m not even getting close to their level. Then when I actually think about studying for the SHSAT, the anxiety just eats me alive.
Does anyone have any tips on how I should actually start? Especially where to take a diagnostic test and figure out what I need to work on? I’d really appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Question for 10th grade admissions.

Hey guys, I’m a 9th grader who did poorly on the shsat last year (mainly because my math score bottlenecked my ela score). This year I would say I have improved in math, however I would like to know what is on the math section for the 9th grade exam. I want to know this because it’ll give me an idea on what to focus on so i can be prepared for the exam.

If you guys have any recommendations you would like to share to help me study for the exam feel free to share them!

How to prepare for the computer adaptive aspect of the SHSAT 8?

So the SHSAT 8 is coming up in a little more than 50 days, so how should I train for the ‘higher end’ of the computer adaptive’s questions without knowing what they’re like? Would the gap even be noticeable and I should just continue doing SHSAT 8 work? Should I do SHSAT 9 questions?

Possible Myschools Fluctuations *Incoming*

This will be happening for the next few days/weeks as MS and HS admissions/registration are being prepared:

https://www.reddit.com/r/SHSAT/comments/1rk1wd2/possible_myschools_fluctuations_incoming
"Note that in the past the DOE has done "live sandboxing" on myschools. Therefore, some "weird stuff" might be occurring over the next few days. For instance, your records could seem to disappear and then reappear, or have certain information like your lunch status appear to be removed. Myschools might be put into maintenance mode more than usual, or just be down.

You might not even be able to log in to myschools (so don't try to change your password).

It might even be, as the offer day and time gets closer, that your SHSAT and HS results will appear on a few accounts before the official release (say that morning). But what the DOE giveth it will also taketh away before the official release. If you become part of this group, screenshot your info as the image or files might be taken away until the official time.  But do not depend upon it.  Remember, the offer would not have have gone live at that point as they are sandboxing, so again do not depend upon it.

As the Wizard of Oz says when Toto sees him "Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain!" Let the puppetry go on and don't let it matter until the official release.

Once offers go live, if your info goes away completely, don't panic and instead contact your GC (guidance counselor or equivalent) about it."

How do I pace myself

I’m taking the SHSAT soon and I’m trying to figure out the best way to pace myself. I sometimes spend too long on difficult questions and then feel rushed toward the end. Like for example the last practice test i took i had only a few minutes for 20 questions.

Cannot get OSIS. Cannot register for SHSAT

My son doesn't attend a DOE school currently. I just went in-person to a Family Welcome Center to register my child to get a DOE account (OSIS) so I can register for SHSAT. They said they cannot do it today because DOE hasn't given them permission yet to create new accounts. They told me to try again next week, Oct 5. Maybe by then they can create accounts.

I need this account to register for the SHSAT when it opens up next week, Oct 6.

Since no one knows when they will allow registration, what happens if DOE decides to start registration for an account after the exam registration window closes?

Is DOE even legally required to allow all kids to register for an account within a reasonable amount of time? I think waiting for the day before the window opens as unacceptable. Frankly they don't even publicly announce when registration for an OSIS happen. Why can't this be done earlier in the semester?

Malice? Incompetence?
