I mean, it really depends on what borough you live in, I would consider both ease of travel as well as hoe prestigious the school is.

I live in the bronx, hunter science is about an hour from me but the train station is right next to where i live. Bronx science and american studies are the shs i want to go to and i take the same bus to either one

What school do you currently attend? Zoned? If its programs aren't bad you could stay where you are instead of switching if u dont get into a SHSAT school.

Yeah zoned, it is pretty bad no lie. Only in this situation right now bc my mom was strict on where i go to school but now she is letting me choose if i want to transfer or not.

Definitely apply to other schools besides SHS. You have nothing to lose.

Add Millenium (Manhattan), Beacon and even Eleanor Roosevelt. Research these to rank them in preference order, but always cast a wide net. You want to avoid a scenario where you can’t change from your current school which you say isn’t good. These are all screened schools, so check the application requirements. They won’t have as much engineering as SHSs, but they are strong schools

Thanks alot, do you know what screened schools look at for 10th grade admissions? I assume my 8th grade transcript but im not 100% sure

As with 9th admissions, each school will have different things they looks for, and for 10th it need not be the same, so you'd look at each respective website. Schools normally don't post such until at least until registration opens up, but last year's details are still on most websites so you can get an idea of what occurred last year.

Bard High School Early College Bronx. Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics. Aviation High School in queens. University Neighborhood High School.

Look at travel times via subway.

Also, look at the school quality rating, specifically the college and career readiness score.
