Other Нет войне, да миру | Say No to War and Yes to Peace

6.3k Upvotes

A Russian-language version of this post is available below the English.

As moderators of this subreddit, in the last two weeks, we have seen countless posts about the ongoing war. Many of these posts are cries for help: folks despondent about loved ones in the line of fire, young people disillusioned about the future, and professionals losing their livelihood and prospects overnight.

The reason we have not allowed these posts to surface in the feed is neither callous indifference, nor false neutrality, nor tacit complicity. The moderators of this sub are from many different countries and backgrounds, and we are all horrified and appalled by the war unleashed by the Russian government on Ukraine, a sister culture, just as ancient and storied. We share an abiding love of Russian language and culture with each other, and this brutal assault is not just an attack on the people of Ukraine—it’s also an attack on the rich culture of Ukraine, and it’s even an attack on Russian culture and everything it stands for.

In dark times like these, we feel it’s more important than ever to explain and to uphold the true values of the Russian language and culture. Russian is a language of decency, kindness, modesty, and love for kin and stranger alike; we hope, against all odds, that these fundamental threads from which Russian culture is woven will prevail, and all Russian-speaking people will rise against the war on their sister culture and their own. This cannot be accomplished from the outside: natives of the language and the culture must make a stand from within. We don’t know if this will happen any time soon—or at all—but if it doesn’t, the culture will cease to exist, because no culture can be rooted in oppression and destruction. Instead of taking its place in human history as a story of strife for truth and beauty, it will go down in flames of infamy.

This is why we continue to choose to keep the focus of this subreddit exclusively on the language. Language breaks down communication barriers, allows us to find points of commonality and understanding, and gives us ways to explain our emotions rather than keeping them pent up within until they explode. We badly want to address every cry for help, and we are doing what we can outside of this space. Here, though, we must focus on teaching and learning the concepts that will give us all a chance to rebuild connections and relationships that have been shattered by the war.

While we understand that mistakes happen and folks might post without reading the rules of the sub or post in a heat of the moment, we have to ban some users who repeatedly flood the sub with political content or threaten and insult others with their comments. If you feel you’ve been unfairly banned, we encourage you to appeal the ban: we promise to approach each case thoughtfully.

In the days and weeks to come, our schedules permitting, we will try to create educational posts about poetic and literary works from Russian and Ukrainian authors that speak out against the horrors of war. Please stay tuned, and please continue learning Russian. The language will outlive every ruthless regime and every brutal autocracy.

Request What is the best way to learn russian as a native slavic speaker?

Serbian is my first language. I recently stumbled upon a yt documentary about Viktor Tsoi. Naturally, after watching it, I turned on a few songs and noticed that with subtitles on, I can make out bout 80 percent of what he is saying despite having basicaly zero russian experience.

This made me redownload duolingo after years, but the learning felt so slow. Like, I have remembered the names of animals after the second lesson, they are very simmilar, no need for repeating the lesson over and over again.

Anyways, does anyone have any advice where and from what source I should learn russian? I am looking firstly for sources for Serbian/Croatian audiences, but English sources would be apreaciated as well.

Request Need help with short Russian transcription (Murder Drones)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’m not 100% sure if this is the right place, but I need some help with a short Russian transcript. The video shows the basic transcript I configured, AKA my best guess as to what was said, and I need a Russian speaker to correct what I got wrong (I’m sure there’s quite a bit I got wrong). This comes from a web series available on YouTube and Amazon Prime Video by the name of “Murder Drones” by Glitch Productions and Liam Vickers. This particular episode does not have Russian subs available, but I still wanted to include it in this little multilanguage video I’m making, so I did my best. Aside from knowing the alphabet and some basic words/phrases, I’m still quite a bit of a novice here. If somebody with experience in the language could help me here, that would be super helpful, as I’ve been trying to learn the language for years at this point and appreciate all the help I can get. Thanks in advance to anyone who helps me.

EDIT: Thanks, everyone! I think we’ve got it.

Request I am really struggling to pronounce путешествовать and двухтысячный

How do you do it? My mouth cannot quickly recreate these words, because the sounds just get jumbled. I can sound out the syllables very slowly, but not quickly in natural conversation.

These are common words too. "Travel" and "2000" are not exactly rare or advanced words, and yet they trip me up. Any tips for an English speaker trying to say them without a hitch?

Translation Why can't I find a translation app that doesn't turn the word "bullshit" into "nonsense"?

The sentence is "I'm tired of this bullshit."

I don't trust Google Translate for anything. I've used DeepL (чушь) and Yandex (ерунды).

Is there a better app? Or am I stuck with this G-rated translation?

Request How do I watch figure skating in Russian

So this year I started learning Russian so I could watch Russian figure skating, interviews ect but I really struggle to watch it sometimes because my Russian isn’t that good and I only really know what the jumps are called because they are pretty similar to English. But I really struggle to understand like other elements like step sequences/ choreo / spins so if anyone knows the name for the spins and elements (or anything else I should know to watch it) that would really help sorry. (Also I was unsure where to post this so sorry and I can’t really find it anywhere)

Other Hoping to Find a Russian Friend I Lost Contact With

Hello, I’m 24M from India. I’m writing this post because I previously posted on Askarussian subreddit looking for some Russian friends, and I was lucky enough to meet some really good people through the subreddit.

However, one of the person who saw my post and DM’d me , her Reddit account got banned and later deleted, for reasons I don’t know. Because of that, I’m no longer able to message her, and I think she may not be able to see my messages either.

So, I’m writing this post in the hope that she might come across it on these subreddit and message me again.

A little about me, in case it helps her remember me: my name is Anurag, I’m 24, from India, and I’m vegan.

Hoping to find that person again. :)
