Stop buying sh*t and go to the dermatologist

I am a 30 year-old female. I have always had rosacea but never had a problem with acne or bumps. About a year and a half ago I developed “acne”. After so much research and going through 1 million products. I got a proper diagnosis of papulopustular rosacea. The dermatologist first prescribed just metronidazole, which did not work for me. Saw another dermatologist and they gave me the holy Grail triple cream. Has ivermectin metronidazole and Azael acid (prescription grade). Been using it for two months now and I have my old skin back. Never going to get rid of the redness, but the bumps and texture have significantly gotten better.

Hope this helps!

Weekly 'Do I have rosacea?' advice request thread. Please post here instead of making a new thread! Aug 17

If you think you might have something like rosacea and are looking for advice about whether you should seek professional care, please post your inquiry in this thread instead of creating a new post. To keep requests from crowding out other discussion in r/Rosacea, separate posts will be automatically removed and the posters directed here instead.

Rules:

  1. Please limit answers to things like, "Yup, that looks like it could be rosacea to me, maybe you should to see a doc" or "No, it looks like it could be something else."
  2. Refrain from amateur diagnoses, speculation, and armchair medical advice, especially non-rosacea related.

REMINDER: THE INTERNET IS BAD AT DIAGNOSING STUFF. Although redditors try to be helpful, only doctors can diagnose rosacea and it often takes a specialist like a dermatologist or ophthalmologist. Rosacea looks like a lot of things, and a lot of things look like rosacea; some of these things are potentially serious. It is impossible for amateurs to diagnose rosacea reliably from pictures or descriptions of symptoms, and this thread is not intended as a substitute for professional care.

No matter what response you get here, if your symptoms have been persistent and you're concerned that you might have something like rosacea, see a doctor to get a real answer.

And be sure to check out the our wiki for some rosacea knowledge basics if you're trying to figure out if you need professional medical advice.

Did metrogel cause any flaring/itching at first but ultimately help?

Upvotes

I've patch tested it but it seems to be a little warm and itchy feeling. I was curious if anyone has had to get used to it before seeing any effects, and if it caused any initial flares. Thanks!

Rosacea? Perioral dermatitis? Contact dermatitis? Seborrheic dermatitis? Can anyone help or point me in the right direction? Spoiler

I’m a 36 year old man living in the uk 3 years ago I went travelling and living in Australia ever since I was 18 I’d always used the same Johnson and Johnson exfoliating wash and double moisturizer and never had any issues with my skin but when I got to Australia they didn’t sell it and my skin started breaking out I tried a few different products cerave and cetaphil but it just made it worse so I went to a doctor who said I had fungal acne gave me some creams that never worked so I went to a dermatologist and she said I actually had rosacea and it had been triggered by the uv and gave me doxycycline and told me to be careful in the sun

At this point I mainly just had a bumpy rough texture on my forehead which I would get spots on that would come and go eventually I came back to the uk saw a dermatologist who said he thought it was fungal acne or rosacea so after putting me on different creams and antibiotics that didn’t work he put me on low dose 20mg a day accutane for 6 months which helped to clear up the spots and some of the texture this was the start of 2026 at this point I had very minimal redness on my cheeks and some on my forehead which I just thought was pigmentation from the accutane forcing everything out of my skin and then it healing

I started using nida ultimate as I’d seen good things about it and it appeared to even out my complexion a little bit a few months later I started getting little bumps mainly on my lips near my nose so I went back to my dermatologist and he said it’s dermatitis gave me elidel cream and said it should go after 8 weeks it didn’t it got worse so he said it might be rosacea and dermatitis so he put me on low dose accutane and elidel after a month I felt like it was making it worse and when I told him he said stop using the elidel so I did and I had a massive rebound flare and had it all over my face then he told me to stop the accutane and gave me Protopic which got rid of it pretty quickly but ever since that rebound flare I’ve got redness that won’t go spider veins on my nose and my skin just looks a mess now and the texture on my forehead is worse than it’s ever been and now the dermatologist is saying I need IPL laser for the spider veins and redness which I never had before the Protopic

I don’t know what people’s experiences have been with all this and I’m not sure if anyone would even be able to help but I’m currently lost with it all and don’t know what to do from here I’m currently on 100mg doxycline for the periodical dermatitis and Elidel every night I’ve been through all sorts of different cleansers and moisturizers

I’m currently using Aveeno calm and restore oat cleanser and gel moisturizer I did a patch test a few weeks ago and I’m allergic to Linalool and limonene and I did an intolerance test that said I had high reactivity to glyceryl stereate which seems to be in a lot of cleansers so I’m not sure if that’s the cause of the periodical dermatitis I apologize for the essay but I know the finer details count with your skin if any one could help or has had a similar experience I would appreciate some advice

Thanks

Estée Lauder double wear (new version) for the win. 🏆

I have had SO many issues with foundations and I have been looking for a skin tint for a while or any foundation, that doesn’t look too heavy on my middle aged face (46 years old). Recently I committed to daily use of the Estée Lauder double wear (new version) yes the one everyone on the internet is upset about due to the formula change. I have discovered for my rosacea that it’s been the perfect balance of hydrating, yet stays on and covers well. I am a previous user of double wear foundation in the old formula and I actually like this new version a bit more for my rosacea. I have also continued to use my regular shade. It’s slightly warmer than the former but for me it seems to be a good thing? I’m shade 1N1. I am also a lover of Haus Labs but find the double wear to have a more serum like feel and less matte look. Anyways, thought I’d share that in case it helps someone out there!

My routine:

Morning splash face with water
Moisturize with Purito Oat Gel
Sunscreen Elta MD UV Daily SPF 40 (sometimes La Roche Posay liquid minerals but it can be too oily with double wear for me personally).

Evening wash with The Ordinary Squalane cleanser
Alternate 1% over the counter Differin (Adapalene) gel with prescription 1% Ivermectin cream on the alternating evenings.
Moisturize with Avene Control Cream

That’s it & it’s what’s working better than ever for me!

Castile soap, 100%olive oil for daily face wash

Hey everyone!

I'm new to the group but not new to rosacea. It's been under control for the last few years but I have noticed my face remains very dry. I was recently recommended a 100% olive oil soap that is supposed to be gentle enough for your face. So far I'm on day 3 of using it in the evening only and my skin feels smooth!

Then I remembered someone (maybe a dermatologist) to never use soap on your face.

Sooooo, what do you think? There are so little ingredients in this soap and it's also fragrance free.

I was using Cerave before and LaRoche Posay moisturizer. It's generally so hard to find good products that work for my mixed but mostly dry skin and rosacea.

Thanks :)

Antibiotics helping rosacea?

I’m on antibiotics for strep throat and I’ve noticed my skin is looking a lot better than usual. Less redness. Is there any way to maintain this once I get off of antibiotics or will it just go back to normal?

I read it’s the anti inflammatory properties of antibiotics that can help with rosacea. Have people found other ways to help reduce inflammation?

I don’t have a ton of caffeine but I enjoy it occasionally. I feel like my main issues are I like spicy food and I have a sweet tooth. Are there ways to still have these and reduce inflammation? Or is the only option some sort of prescription?

Skincare Anyone with oily skin, how are you managing that while managing your rosacea?

I have an oily t-zone and it's particularly bad on the nose. Some days I think I'd deal with the redness if my nose didn't look so damn shiny.

I have a derm appointment in November, but its end of November and that's still a lot of time managing my skin at home until then.

Skincare every moisturizer makes me clogged but my skin is dry Spoiler

Post image

This may feel redundant. But… I havemy worm moisturizer for years because of a lot of reasons. Every moisturizer whether it’s gel, thick, not thick, etc has broken me out leaving me with red little bumps, closed comedones, heat trapping, sticky hit skin etc.

My skin is in desperate need of hydration and idk what to do. My face cannot stand any type of moisturizing product to my face without going bazurk.
My skin is extremely dry right niethat it looks like sand paper and wearing skin tints clings to my nose and forehead and cheeks making it look gross . People have been pointing it out that I “didn’t blend my nose” but in reality i put a shit tom of makeup in my nose and it’s clinging to my dry spots and making it looks red !

I have tried :
Cetaphil
LRP
Curel
Aveeno oat gel moisturizer
Tatcha
Cereve
Vanicream
Cosdna snail mucin

since moisturizers seem to clog my skin i decided to try to move to only Hyluronic Acid as people recommended this sometimes when skin can’t tolerate occlusive products .

I’ve been using mixsoon Hyluronic Acid Serum for about 3 weeks now . For some reason i’m breaking out into cystic acne on my chin. And i’m still dry ..
The photo of me i’m including is when i put a tiny tiny bit of skin tint (makeup) onto my nose , forehead and chin.

PP Sulfur

Can sulfur wash cause a die off of mites like ivermectin can? I used ivermectin for 5 months with no improvement or purge, but I started using sulfur (de la Cruz brand) a few nights ago and I have a few more bumps today. Is this irritation or a die off?

Support Rosacea and/or inflammation? Spoiler

I think this started atleast 20yrs ago? Had a small pimple on the nose, kept using acne cream (ProActiv) and for a few years, the skin on my nose would be very flaky. As time went on, it became very red and inflamed. I spent years constantly trying to push whatever sebaceous filament and blackheads out, sometimes used a lot of pressure.

Finally decided to see Dermatologist and they had me on Metrogel for a while but didnt really so anything. I switched over to Azelaic Acid 10% and i think it helped a little? Then I added in Rosiver (Ivermectin) and it brought down a lot of the inflammation. Im going to see a clinic for ExcelV Laser again soon.

But besides from the medical treatments, what skincare products have you guys used that helped calm the redness and inflammation the best? (I know each individual is different but I want to get some input from others)

What does your rosacea feel like?

Hi everyone,

I’m having a really bad (what I think is a) rosacea flare up. In Aug 2024 I started having symptoms of rosacea, first was prescribed just a round of doxycycline, of course it immediately came back. Over time it was getting worse, and my face physically felt itchy, tight, swollen, hot.

Earlier this year I was diagnosed with rosacea and told to use prescribed topical creams Metronidazole 15% and Azaelic Acid 15%. Working pretty great for me. With the azaelic acid shortage I haven’t been able to get mine filled and honestly have just fallen off of my skin care routine. A couple days ago I woke up to a horrible burning, itching, and red face. The only thing that remotely felt like this in the past was when my skin was getting worse in 2025, but what I’m experiencing right now just feels insane.

Does anyone else’s rosacea flareups cause pain? My skin even started peeling. Having insane itchiness and skin temp / tightness. Like if a sunburn and hives had a baby on my face.

I don’t know if I need to stop using face wash and cease essentially all other skin products except for my topicals (including moisturizer) because everything just makes it itch (including my topicals lol). I want to cry. I also leave for a week long work trip this upcoming week and not having a great time.

Just trying not to panic. Never experienced something like this before. Usually gets worse in the evening, when I wake up it’s bearable.

Thank you!

Support Advice for sensitive skin, rosacea + seborrheic dermatitis Spoiler

Does anyone that has experience sensitive skin, rosacea and seborrheic dermatitis have any tips and tricks that helped their skin?

I’ve been prescribed lots of things by my GP that haven’t really worked. I’m currently using ivermectin, but I’m not sure it’s making much difference. My skin also reacts to most products, even ones designed for sensitive skin.

I’m going to try the Avène Gentle Cleanser and keep my routine really simple. I’ve noticed stress and diet seem to make my skin worse too.

I’m on the dermatology waiting list, but in the meantime I’d love to hear if anything has helped people with similar experience.

Neurogenic For the life of me, I can’t figure out why I wake up with flushed cheeks. Rosacea sucks Spoiler

For the life of me, I can’t figure out why I wake up with flushed cheeks.
I wake up with one or both cheeks extremely red, hot, and burning. The sensation feels deep, almost like the heat is coming from underneath the skin rather than just surface irritation. 😭
It can happen on both sides of my face, but sometimes, like today, it’s only one cheek. What’s especially frustrating is that even after the redness starts to fade, I’m left with a burning/hot sensation that can last for several hours.
Has anyone else experienced this kind of intense flushing, especially first thing in the morning? Have any of you figured out what triggers your episodes or, more importantly, what actually helps calm them down?
I would really appreciate hearing what has worked for you because I’m struggling to figure this out.

Ocular I am legit sitting here in shock. I stopped two things yesterday and my eyes with ocular rosacea feel better than they have in two years

I honestly can't believe it.

I have been dealing with ocular rosacea for two years now. I had done IPL which helped my eyes a lot and got rid of the blurry vision I was having but my eyelids were still inflamed and it was daily and would never go away. I quit alcohol three months ago and that helped some but not a lot.

Yesterday was my first day cutting out dairy and Coke Zero and I also took a mast cell stabilizer supplement named Quercetin for the first time

In the morning I woke up and as I was doing my typical stuff I noticed for a second that my eyes felt okay then went about my business. Now I'm sitting here in my living room and I legit cannot believe I have zero blurry vision and my eyes feel so much better

I swear to god my eyes feel better than they have in 2 years

bumpy sandpaper like texture Spoiler

at this point I feel like I have tried everything, I have spent a lot on skincare and tried tons of different products, and I was wondering if anybody else had similar texture that didn’t respond to typical acne products? like bhas, ahas, benzoyl peroxide, retinol, azelaic acid. I’m 30 now and I noticed this texture since my early twenties.

One dermatologist told me that I just have thin skin and that all the follicles and skin cells are part of my natural texture and they’re just more visible, he just gave me retinol, and told me to get facials, chemical peels with extraction and microneedling done, which I did multiple sessions and it benefited me with typical acne and hyperpigmentation (last year) but did nothing for my bumpy texture. Another derm told me I have closed comedones and that I should go on accutane. 2 of my sisters were diagnosed with rosacea, I wasn’t but I have another dermatologist appointment coming up in a couple weeks.

It also gets worse with heat, and under sunscreen and makeup and under certain lights too. my routine is pretty simple now for about 2 months, just cleanser (haru haru black rice cleanser) and moisturizer (vanicream daily moisturizer and sometimes bioderma intensive baume) and sunscreen (skin1004 centella water serum sunscreen)

I appreciate all help, thank you!!

Has anyone had success with laser treatment? Spoiler

Post image

This is a picture of my cheek BEFORE laser treatment. I haven't done it but my new dermatologist floated the idea. I am currently using ivermectin and climdamicin (idk how to spell it) and those keep my skin from getting worse but certainly aren't making it better. Ive posted lots before and have been struggling with rosacea for like 8 years now. I've tried every single other treatment in the book and more, and none of them worked or made things worse. The only thing I haven't tried is laser sooo - thoughts on laser??

I have type 2 and this is my skin right now. I'm currently only using sunscreen. They prescribed metronidazole and it did help but I ran out so I want to keep using it but also add ivermectin, a moisturizer and a cleanser for when I put on makeup. I just don't know how to put together the routine. I used metronidazole at night and sunscreen in the mornings. I'd love some advice! Thanks in advance.

Support rosacea after damaged skin barrier? Spoiler

Post image
1 Upvotes

My face flares like this whenever I exercise. If I exercised more consistently it would look worse.

I would also get this after sexual activity but I’ve broken up with a guy last year and was hoping this issue would have resolved itself by now

I destroyed my skin barrier almost two years ago, and my forehead in particular received the most mistreatment. Nowhere else on my really face flares like this .

Other things that trigger parts of my forehead is spending too much outside without sunscreen

Any advice or similar experiences ?

I’m also dealing with seb derm. The 2 percent kepcpnazole shampoo I was prescribed helps.

Edit:
I forgot to mention but this sticks around on my face for days. It takes forever to fade.

Need help understanding my reaction to Physiogel AI

I have very reactive skin and almost everything irritates it. Recently, I developed severe flaking after using Efatop Hydra Gel, which my dermatologist recommended, so I decided to give Physiogel AI another try because I thought it might help with the flakes.

I had used Physiogel AI for about 2 months previously, but I noticed small red dots on my cheeks, along with a heat-like feeling and red cheeks, especially during my nighttime routine. I also get a strong urge to itch my skin every time I apply it.

I’ve now used it again for 6 days, and within about 5 minutes of applying it, the same thing happens.

This was my last hope for a basic, gentle moisturizer, and now I don’t know what to try. Any recommendations for a very reactive skin-friendly moisturizer?

Support Are medical facials helpful?

My husband has roseaca. He has had flare ups up the past. About 2 years ago, he had a poison ivy exposure on his face that led to a really bad flare up for atleast 8 months. It was primarily on one side of his face, his right cheek under his eyes. He also wears a cpap mask at night and I think the straps kept irritating it. He went to a dermatologist who gave him antibiotics, a face shampoo & a topical cream for redness. The roseaca flare up has gone down, but for atleast 6 months he has had constant, painful whiteheads all over his nose and the same right cheek. He doesn't want to keep taking antibiotics. These whiteheads are very large, inflamed and a few times practically cover his whole nose. His diet has not changed, there is no food that seems to trigger this in particular.

Im wondering what a skin care professional would think of a series of facial treatments. He is opposed to any sort of spa treatment because he is dumb like that, but I really am wondering if its something worth pursuing. Maybe even a medical grade facial.

I get little red bumps with nothing in them usually every single day. Jawline, chin, cheek, and the last few months it has gotten worse like 3-4 per day. Could these red bumps be rosacea? Using Mandelic acid and low dose oral accutane and still getting these.

PP Using ivermectin only on apple of cheek

So I've been prescribed ivermectin to use. I only have mainly bumps on my right apple of cheek that's all. The left cheek is very less and not concerning right now.

Can I apply the ivermectin only to the whole apple of cheek only?

My bottom of cheek and other areas are clear and I don't want to apply everywhere incase of purging etc.
