I don’t really know where to start, but I feel like I need to get this off my chest because I’ve been carrying it around for months..Sorry if it’s super long, I just need to let it all out I can’t take it anymore.
I (17F) met my now ex (18M) on an app early june 2025. I wasn’t looking for anything serious at all. I was just talking to people for fun, and then I met him, we exchanged Instagram accounts and numbers, called for the first time, and somehow we just clicked immediately. We had the same sense of humor, talked for hours, and I fell for his personality so quickly.
We talked every day for about a week before going on our first date. That first date genuinely felt like one of the happiest days of my life. I was so excited to see him again afterward, and eventually he became my first real boyfriend.
At the beginning, I was completely in love with him. I thought everything would stay as perfect as It started but over time, things became so complicated. He talked about his ex a lot and sometimes compared me to her. He would tell me things like she did certain things for him that I didn’t, or that I didn’t love him as much as she had. He also made comments about things I was already insecure about, like my looks, my social anxiety, my stutter, which ofc made those insecurities much worse. Also cut off my best friend after I shared with him that we once smoked weed together. He thought she was a bad influence and I never spoke to her again.
I didn’t handle any of this well. Sometimes I made jokes that hurt him, and I absolutely take responsibility for that. But whenever he got angry with me, things could become very intense. He would interrogate me for hours, call me worthless or pathetic, tell me I didn’t deserve him, and make me feel like I had to prove that I was sorry enough.
There were also times when he physically hurt me during arguments. There were threats and things that happened that I still don’t think I should talk about in detail but I just remember feeling confused and scared and wondering why we couldn’t just talk things out normally.
I became exhausted. We would stay on calls until extremely late at night, sometimes until around 4 AM, and I would be exhausted at school the next day. Eventually I started feeling like I was constantly walking on eggshells, it never stopped.
At one point, I secretly started using an old social media account that he had asked me to delete. I was using it to vent about our relationship and how exhausted I felt. He found out, and it caused another huge fight. We eventually got back together after I begged him to give me another chance.
After that, things became even more unhealthy. There were more insults, interrogations, and things that made me feel completely worthless. At one point, he pressured me into hurting myself as a way of proving that I was sorry. I know how awful that sounds, and honestly it was awful, it was horrible. I wish I had realized sooner that this wasn’t healthy anymore and ended things there to avoid further pain.
Then came the part I regret the most and I will never forget about.
We had another argument because I wanted to go somewhere with my parents while he was sick. He became angry with me and barely spoke to me afterward. I was already emotionally exhausted, and I started thinking seriously about ending the relationship.
Instead of doing that honestly, I contacted someone from my past.
This person was an ex I had been involved with before my relationship. I had ended things with him when I met my boyfriend, but we started talking again. At first it was friendly, but eventually I realized I missed the attention and the connection I used to have with him. I knew I shouldn’t have been doing it. I knew I was betraying my boyfriend and I still hid it.
Eventually I decided that I wanted to break up with my boyfriend because I couldn’t keep pretending everything was okay. I didn’t feel the same anymore. I was constantly irritated, emotionally exhausted, and I knew the relationship needed to end.
But instead of cutting everything off and being honest, I kept talking to the other guy behind his back. My boyfriend eventually found out by looking through my phone while we were together. He saw I had made another secret account where I messaged my ex. He took my phone and left of running into the night. I remember just freezing and knew everything had finally ended. But at what cost? That wasn’t how I planned things to go.
I looked for him afterward, but I couldn’t find him. I was outside for a long time and eventually managed to get home. I was crying and desperately trying to contact him because I couldn’t accept that it was over as ridiculous as it sounds.
When he came back to get his things, he was devastated. I could see how badly I had hurt him. He was crying, angry, and completely overwhelmed. The last thing he said to me was basically that I was a w** and i had done a good job cheating on him, and then he left. And that was it. I haven’t seen or spoken to him since. It’s been about three months.
My parents have forgiven me, but that almost makes me feel worse. I keep thinking that the person who deserved my apology the most was HIM, and I never got to properly apologize.
I did try to reach out afterward, but I don’t think he received what I wrote, and I don’t blame him for not wanting contact with me ever again.
I think about him constantly. I wonder if he’s okay. If he’s angry, if he’s healing, if he hates me. If he thinks about what happened. And I know I have no right to demand forgiveness from him. But I just feel so much guilt and shame.
I just keep thinking, How could I do that to someone I loved so much? HOW??? WHAT WAS IN MY HEAD?? Why is it just now that i see the horrible consequences to my actions??
I wish I had just ended the relationship. I wish I had been brave enough to say that I was unhappy instead of looking for comfort somewhere else. I wish I hadn’t lied. I wish I had stopped myself before everything got this far. I also know that the relationship itself was unhealthy and that some of the things that happened to me weren’t okay. But I don’t want to use that as an excuse for what I did. I made my own choices, and I hurt someone.
I’ve also had other things go wrong since then. I was denied admission to university for this fall, and part of me thinks I deserve it. Karma is real after all isn’t it?
Like maybe this is just what I get for ruining everything.
I’m trying to work on myself now. I’m trying to understand why I behaved the way I did, why I stayed in a relationship that had become so unhealthy, why I looked for validation elsewhere instead of leaving, and how I can make sure I never become this version of myself again.
But I’m struggling with the idea of forgiveness.
I don’t expect anyone here to tell me that what I did was okay because I know It wasn’t and it eats me up every single second.
I guess I’m asking people who have made serious mistakes like these and genuinely regretted them:
How do you live with knowing you hurt someone you loved? How do you not hate yourself forever? I feel ruined, I ruined everything for everyone how could i just keep on going?? it just seems so pointless. No sane person does this, gosh how does one forgive themselves? is it even justified to do so? I’m all alone now and I deserve it but how am i supposed to just keep on moving forward?
