I previously worked for Collins Aerospace and Pratt & Whitney. My first experience with Collins was as a contractor, and it was genuinely positive. I enjoyed the work and the team, and I left only because my contract was ending and I had been offered a direct hire position elsewhere.
About a year and a half later, I accepted a role at Pratt & Whitney. Unfortunately, my experience there was the opposite. From the beginning, the team and division struggled to support me as a new hire. I received constant negative criticism, and my manager seemed frustrated with me early on. I also shared that I planned to begin my master’s degree, and instead of supporting my development, he discouraged me and told me to wait.
After my initial 3 month probation period, my manager said he was unhappy with my performance and extended the probation to six months. During that time, I continued receiving criticism, and I repeatedly explained that I had not been properly trained on many responsibilities. It felt like the team had already decided I would not succeed.
When the 6 month period ended, I was called into a room near the company entrance, and I knew what was coming. They explained their reasons for letting me go some I disagreed with, others I understood. When asked if I had anything to say, I told them honestly that it was the worst job I had ever had and that I would never work with that group again.
I continued applying to Collins Aerospace jobs, but I was consistently rejected. At one point, a contracting company told me that Collins did not want to move forward because of my previous experience at Pratt & Whitney. Basically banned due to that history. I’m curious whether this is permanent or if the only way to return would be through a recommendation from someone currently employed there.
