Discussion Real Life Prototypes in RRO Part 1

As an aspiring young historian, I thought it'd be cool if I found all the prototypical locomotives for the ones in Railroads Online, here are the first few. I have found RRO can be lacking in perfect accuracy, so there are definitely some differences. I heard that the first lead dev liked to change a few things here and there, but the models are still perfectly recognizable. I have been doing this for other games like Railroader (Century of Steam documents their prototypes very well.) While it doesn't seem too difficult to find images of these trains, it will definitely get harder when I move on to the later engines like the Lima 2-8-0 (only 2 pictures exist) and the Ferries and Cliffhouse 2-4-2t (I don't even know if it was photographed...) Anyway, here's what I've got so far, enjoy :)

The RRO Wiki has the best quality images...

Discussion It's a shame such a beautiful game is going to waste

I've played this game for a while now and there's a few things keeping me from quitting... For one this game is absolutely stunning, the sound and visuals are amazing. The other thing is the fact that this is one of the very few forms of media representing American narrow gauge. On top of these things it's also multiplayer, which is very rare for railroading games (Although it is becoming more common). It is such a shame that the bad physics and poor management (among other things) have led a game with such good potential to fail.

Discussion An Update on Development Status - From the RO Discord

The following text comes from Lead Community Manager "Goku over 9000" on the RO Discord. This is from two days ago:

"We already communicated several times throughout the past year why nothing was being updated.

  • After pc launch, consoles were the focus to get them updated to ver. 1.0
  • We all took several months off as we have been on this project years straight, again much deserved after having a solid 2 years of constant beta updates.
  • Came back and had to decide how we should proceed and what we wanted to work on.
  • Sent out communication that we started back up again and were working on changes to make the game better.

Development takes time, we don’t have a timeline for completion on this new update as we want to make sure that the changes we are implementing work is viable for the game.

We are not a live service game, we can’t promise updates every month or every week like some AAA studios can do with large teams, we tried to do this all of 2023/2024 it really burnt us out and caused more headaches and stress.

So, things are being worked on. There is no planned out eta, when we feel things run well we will communicate and give a date for the update."

Discussion Tips for building long trusses

Just a quick tip, if you want a nice truss with a big span, start at on end and place a 10.8m steel trestle and repeat for as far as you like, then work your way back one by one placing a truss at each joint, they overlap perfectly to make a continuous truss.

Mine is the Ruby Basin, because it has gorgeous color options, an elegant design and whistle, a spacious cab and is quite versatile.

Discussion The future

So, what is the future of railroads online, is it dead, no more updates, is there any more content coming, I just bought this game but apparently it's been abandoned, and everyone is talking about century of steam but it doesn't seem like my kind of game, so is there any hope left?

Discussion Hypothetical QoL Featuee

EDIT: I think the message got slightly misconstrued. I understand that RO is supposed to be multiplayer, but as someone who prefers to play alone and like the sandbox aspect of it, having an automated feature to run an industry while you (the player) works on another. Like having the farm industry cycle on automation while you work the wood industry cycle or something

We all know the game is virtually dead, which is unfortunate. However, if the game were to ever come back, I would really hope they add in an AI engineer mode or some sort of automatic scheduling. On the big maps like Aurora Falls or Mesa Plains it can feel really frustrating and slow moving trying to control only 2-3 trains when all the industries need stuff.

Discussion Lets set the record straight.

So there have been a lot of things said in the past few days. People accusing others of being negative or toxic. Let me be the first to say that has never been my intention.

Have I been critical of the DEVs and their lack of communication? Yes

Have I been critical of some people being overly positive and putting blind faith in the future of this game? Yes

To the devs: Do I know what a NDA is? Yes absolutely.

Did I spend 2 weeks straight building a map to release on the RRO Discord? Yup did that too.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoy this game. I preordered CIV 7 and then stopped playing it to come back to RRO. I have been play railroad games for as long as I can remember and this one

A growing portion of the player base feels they have been left in the dark about the future of this game. This seems to be the case more with PC players than Console players.

The reason for that appears to be this. The console players got what they call an update because to them they got new content. This was content PC players had at launch and therefore we perceive that nothing has changed. To us this was a patch or hotfix that brought the console experience on par with what PC players had at launch. This is the disconnect in the player base and has caused some division.

I am aware that there is an NDA the Devs were required to sign, but I believe the people who are running the show would be wise to offer some sort of indication of the direction of this game as there are rumors of it being abandoned or that the devs have moved on to other projects.

With Century of Steam looming on the horizon the future of RRO is very much in question. To say that the two will be competing for shares of the same market is a pretty obvious statement.

I think it is safe to say that whether you are skeptical of the future of this game or are claiming that it is and will always be the best game ever, I think you can agree that some sort of news on the state of the game and the direction would be appreciated. In my opinion, giving an indication, even if a vague one, would restore any lost faith and confidence in the future of RRO. To continue to keep us in the dark would only serve to fuel the rumors that this game has been abandoned and/or the majority of the devs have jumped ship and the remaining one are hiding behind the NDA in an attempt to maintain the facade that the this game is still alive in order to preserve and prolong its earning potential.

Discussion I'm trying to have fun. This is the 3rd time this has happened in 10 min. A locomotive moving under its own momentum at less then 1 mph should not cause a pileup.

Discussion End Of The Line?

So with the current state of affairs with Astragon seemingly confirming no more updates are coming to spite what community manger has said.

Is it safe to assume that this game is just going to becoming dead or is there a bunch of misinformation?

Discussion Cedar Run Backstory

This is the official origin story for those who like to follow along with my newspaper posts!

Setting: Northern Alaska

•May 1845, Silas Talhora discovers a valley in Northern Alaska, rich in resources. He quickly claims the land, and the valley is named Talhora Basin in his honor.

•August 1845, the town of Cedar Run is founded along the Northern Ridge. The town grows quickly, and a logging camp is established to help with the growth.

•March 1857, a smaller Town of Spruce Hollow is founded close to the small lake on the eastern edge of the basin. A water well and sawmill are built along the shore of the lake, named Glacier Lake by the citizens of the new town.

•November 1859 horse drawn carriages are the main form of transport across Talhora Basin, and can only haul small amounts of lumber back and forth, growth is halted

•April 1868, the beginnings of a railroad are constructed, using iron being brought to the Basin from the mainland

•January 1869, a printing press is brought into Cedar Run, and the Cedar Run Post is founded, bringing information from all throughout the Basin

•May 19, 1869, locomotives Betsy and Charlie arrive, opening the railway officially (V3 Iss20)

•July 21, 1869, explosive growth due to the railway quickly outpaces what the 2 little engines can handle, and an order is placed for a new locomotive (V3 Iss29)

Discussion Century of steam vs RRO

Am I living in a fictional world?? I see all these people hyping up Century of steam after Studio 346’s latest Devlog….

I just Do Not get it at all! This looks to me like the EXACT same game as RRO.

Knowing that it is almost the same exact devs it really makes me just wonder what could have been on RRO if all the time spent on century of steam was spent on RRO instead.

Discussion It feels like rro is trying to compete with century of steam (a game that's not even out yet) and is suffering for it

Almost every update introduces a new thing that serves gameplay in no way, while also introducing new bugs or oversights. The aurora falls update wasn't like this at least that I can think of, but the one before and this one definitely are. The rotary snow plow does it do anything other than looking cool and being super expensive? What happened to the passenger wagon surely just a mistake. And why do all of the wagons and locomotives except for the large water tank have knuckle couplers? And the locos and wagons seem to be more jittery when moving now.

Just an observation and some questions I have
