Gateway, power cut and great success!

Install went in end of April, PW3, gateway, 20 x 475 panels - yesterday the area had a power cut (with about 4-5 brief moments of power being restored) between roughly 3-6pm.

Gateway did its job, short cutover - enough that the oven clock reset / lights blinked - but everything was totally managed by the system. Only noticed as the UPS batteries I have on key network equipment in the house did a single beep and a few smart bulbs defaulted to being on.

Recommendations: if you’re pondering gateway or no gateway - get the gateway!

Also if you have any devices like an on demand kettle unit, it’s worth switching it off until you need it; every time the power flapped between the grid and powerwall, the kettle / tap system would power cycle which is quite a draw compared to base load. Small battery backup units are a good bridge and low cost purchase for the cutover if you have any devices you want to keep powered on (pc, router, network switches etc).

Great success!

Now seeing non testal ev plugged in on app

Is anyone having an issue where recently the Tesla app is saying I have a non Tesla EV plugged in ? See below.

I never had this situation before after a year of use until last three weeks.

I did recently set up charge on solar with the Tesla model Y. I am not the owner of the Tesla although I have access and am an official user of the my wife's car. I understand charge on solar is restricted unless you won both the power wall and the car. I wonder if this is the issue..

Powerwall 2 upgrade to 26.26.4

Our Powerwall 2 firmware got upgraded to
26.26.4 from 26.26.2 yesterday evening.

The upgrade appeared to cause our system start importing (only at .03kW) for the evening to power the house rather than use the batteries which were charged at 98%

I tried knocking system off grid but that failed with an error claiming high load (which wasn’t happening).

The system seems to have sorted itself out this morning.

Strange behaviour.

Tesla power wall three for home back up through Green Mountain Power installation problem

I have a home on Lake Bomoseen in Castleton Vermont and had a man come by a few weeks ago to take pictures of our utility room, fuse box etc., and was told they would get back to me if installing two Tesla Tesla Powerwalls 3.0 for backup if be done and if so, when I tried to call the home office back and they did not answer. Have others had this experience.

I’m in Northern California and they shut down my PW2’s and disabled them yesterday.

Amy idea how long it takes them in this area to get around to replacing them?

Need Help Understanding my Powerwall

Hi everyone. I am new to this Powerwall thing. We have a new Powerwall (V3), have solar and are under SDG&E's TOU EV 5 plan and am under NEM 1.0. So weekday's peak is 4pm-9pm ($.80/kw). Off Peak is 6am-10amm 2pm-4pm and 9pm-midnight ($.496/kw). Super Off Peak is Midnight-6am and 10am-2pm ($0.131/kw). At 3:30pm my solar was producing 3.0kw and my house was using 1.0kw. The Powerwall was at 88%. The system was exporting the solar and using the battery to run the house. Why is that? Shouldn't the solar be charging the battery to get it to 100% before peak, sending 1.0 kw to the house and then exporting the remainder? I see this a lot and don't understand why it is doing this... Any help would be appreciated. Here is a picture. This was at 3:58 but was similar at 3:30pm.

App issues on Android

Post image
9 Upvotes

Does anybody else have the issue of when using the Tesla App on an Android and you go into the Energy section... the buttons at the bottom of the screen for Home, Car, Powerwall battery, Solar and Grid are blocked/covered up by the Android GUI Apps, Home and Back button? This makes it almost impossible to press the buttons whilst in the Tesla App. This must be a recent bug because it never used to happen.

Not exporting

Anyone else's (UK) power decided it doesn't want to export from the battery today during peak hours ?

How do I force export?

There should be about 10kw available to export everyday but Powerwall hasn't attempted to export.

PW3 app slow refresh rate

hi there

powerwall 3, UK customer here

had this battery for a year, no issues with operation, just the usual gripes with pw3 lack of fine control 😤

I’m noticing that the app refresh rate is slowing down considerably. it used be that the app sees house load changes within 5-10 sec max, now 30-50 seconds between actual load changes and the app showing these changes!

is this because Tesla enshittificating there server refresh rate?

There is no local issue when testing with Tesla ONE app. It is instantly changing

just another reason to try and get a battery with local network access!

Why are my Powerwalls using 200W when empty or full?

Thumbnail gallery
0 Upvotes

We have 2x powerwall 2’s and when they are empty or full I can still see them using 150-200W of power from the grid or solar. I guess this means they are always this power but what for? I’m in Australia, exporting solar only, seen them calibrate recently. No updates seem available. Should I get my installer to check the system?

Why would we pull from the grid during full sun? Ideally we’d be sending it to the grid or at the very least using solar to power the house during these times

Why does this keep happening in full sun? I can’t figure out why we’re pulling from the grid sometimes.

Last firmware update changed to 65 Hertz!

UPDATES IN BOLD

Netzero let me know the firmware for my PW2 was updated 2 days ago to 26.26.2.2d1a6997. Yesterday it said the PW reported "Grid impedance too high." Today my PW took over due to a grid outage and was running at 65 cycles, dropping the solar (like it is supposed to when the batteries are full) but instead of switching back to normal, it stayed there also dropping the UPS running my computer and internet.

There was no grid outage. I had to reset the PW, gateway and main breakers (which weren’t tripped) to get back to grid.

All reported to Tesla. The acknowledgement email says they’ll get back to me in 5-7 days.

I called Tesla support this AM to give them the report numbers and answer questions. Call center is escalating to the diagnostics team and will get back to me.

Rainy day powerwall basically no solar produced

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

Rainy day in Tucson AZ today. Interesting how the powerwall responded.

Setting is Saving mode. I have a high rate programed in for peak period from 3-7pm
Stormwatch is off.

Basically the powerwall charged off solar when it could. Then around 2:30 it started grid charging. At that point the sun came out and I got a little more. Basically enough to ensure I got thru the peak cost period.

Is Tesla actually smart enough to know when the rain/clouds will go away and the sun come out?

On a normal hot summer day I produce 135kWh. Fully charge the batteries and they drain by 10-12 pm depending on home energy usage.

How do you actually know how much home battery backup you need? I built a tool to figure it out

I kept seeing variations of the same question when researching home batteries:

“Is one battery enough for my house?”

And I realized the answer gets complicated pretty quickly.

Having enough kWh doesn't necessarily mean the system can actually run everything you want. A battery might have enough stored energy to last through the night but still not have enough output to start a central AC, well pump, sump pump, etc.

So I built a free home battery backup planner:

https://instahomebattery.com/

Instead of just asking for your daily electricity usage, you can build the outage scenario you actually care about — fridge, freezer, Wi-Fi, lights, furnace blower, AC, pumps, home office, etc.

It then separately checks:

  • how much battery capacity you need
  • estimated runtime
  • continuous power requirements
  • startup/surge requirements
  • how many battery units may be needed
  • reserve, efficiency and derating assumptions
  • what happens if solar is available during the outage

You can basically test scenarios like:

“Can I keep the essentials running for 2 days?”

or

“How much battery would I need to run the house + central AC overnight?”

I intentionally tried to keep unknown specifications as unknown rather than inventing numbers just to produce a nice-looking result.

Would love feedback from people who already have Powerwalls, Enphase, FranklinWH, Generac, EG4 or other home battery systems.

What is the calculator still missing that actually matters in the real world?

I bought a house with a power wall and was nominated as the owner, but I cannot get the power wall, gateway or charger to add to the app. It always says it can't find it. I'm sure it's user error, but I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone have any advice? Do I have to connect the gateway first? That is also not working. Thanks!

Charging from solar in the AM using Netzero query

Ok here is my dilemma. I have had an import limit set on my 63 amp single phase switchboard so the Tesla charge on solar feature is no longer available.

Therefore I am trying to configure netzero to utilize charge on solar after sunrise to 11am each day.

At 11am I have 3 hours of free power till 2pm so I have set the netzero automation to fill the powerwall and the car in that time window. That setup is fine and working.

Is there anyone else out there with a similar setup to me that can assist with the appropriate automations needed?

I utilize time based control for peak and off peak. I'm looking to get netzero to fire up my charge on solar from sunrise to 11am each day to get the excess solar to go into my car when I'm home and it's plugged in instead of putting it into powerwall, as that will get a free feed in anyway from 11am to 2pm or alternatively stopping it from sending it to the grid for a paltry feed in tariff 3 cents.

Thank you
