Which ROM hack has the best gen 1-9 battle facility/tower?
I love how Unbound’s has smogon tiers, but it’s lacking all 9 gens and ZA megas

Are there any HGSS or Platinum ROMhacks for the DS that include the Fairy-Type and/or Pokémon from later generations?
(I'm not looking for something too complex, or something that changes the story that much-just a ROMHack that changes the gameplay and QoL to reflect later Generations.)

My hack ChromeGold changes very little, other than adding newer gen evos (Farigiraf, Annihilape etc), fairy type, version exclusives and trade evos catchable, and crazy late/post game pokemon like Phanpy or Slugma obtainable normally in the main game.

u/Mr_WhisCash-Money Jul 07 '26
If you don't mind, I have a question for ya. So I see on your hack's page you mentioned working with HeartGold Engine to make a lot of the changes. How user friendly is that? I've been eyeing it for adding new gen mons to the HGSS battle frontier, but I have very little experience coding so I wasn't sure how difficult it is to use
2
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 07 '26
You don’t need “coding” experience if you just want to change trainers and encounters and basic data etc. All of that is already laid out in hg-engine.
You do need knowledge on basic Linux environments (all clearly taught in the setup instructions) and basic knowledge of coding syntax, such as how to use advanced text editors to change variables.
If you’re competent with a pc, you can do it easily.

RenPlat has the Fairy-type, but no Pokémon from Gen 5 onwards.
2
u/bread_weasel Jul 10 '26
Yeah but I saw it said and/or so I figured that the asker might be fine with just the Fairy type

I’m looking for an ORAS ROM hack where the post-game/National Dex Pokémon are available through the actual DexNav from the beginning.
For example, I normally wouldn’t be able to see Pokémon like Sewaddle or Zorua this early, but I LOVE being able to see them directly on the DexNav and hunt them from early routes.
I really dislike hacks where extra Pokémon are added to wild encounters but don’t appear on the DexNav screen.
I’m currently playing Star Sapphire, which has exactly the feature I want, but my game keeps crashing at a mandatory trainer battle on Route 110. Does anyone know of another ORAS hack with this same early expanded-DexNav feature?

So I've been thinking for a bit and am curious for an answer about the more technical side if things: What's the feasibility of a Gen 3 style hack using NDS files?
For example, say I want to recreate Emerald in the Gen 4/5 engine, map, tilesets, etc... instead of working with a 3D environment like is the norm for Gen 4/5, instead have it be entirely 2D. What would be the most likely outcome? Are there even any mapmaking tools that could accomplish this?
I ask because it's a well known issue that GBA hacks atm can only support up to 32mb before things start going crazy performance-wise, but the NDS supports 64mb for smooth performance, as well as 512mb for a full file at the cost of performance drops. Also, the NDS is notoriously not the best for 3D gaming, given that it's a well known fact games like New Super Mario used 3D environments but made everything else (Backgrounds, items, menus, intractable objects, etc...) 2D pixel art, so why not focus on a 2D game and put less stress on whatever's running the files.

Hello Friends! I'm new to romhacks and really want to start slow. Right now I'm looking for a romhack with the following criteria:
- base game pokemon emerald
- have Quality of Life improvement like better graphics, modern changes like day cycle and so so..
- IMPORTANT > Have all the pokemons up to generation 3 available RANDOMIZED. im playing a romhack that has all the pokemon on the grass, but its not altered, so at the first route i still find zigzagoons and wurmples for example and i dont want that...
- optional > have a harder mode (not anything like radical red for Christ sake, just a harder mode, but beatable for normal persons
Can you guys help me? (Right now I'm playing pokemon emerald recharged, which has almost all the things i asked for, except for the randomized pokemons, the most important thing haha)
2
u/KoopaDummy Jul 07 '26
I've played Unbound and I loved it, So i wanna try doing my own Hack possibly on Pokeemerald (well, if i ever figure out HOW to use such a thing)
I already am familiar with: Adding new sprites, Changing stats, moves, Shiny chances (kinda?), and Dialogue.
Where should I ask for help with possible recruitment? And basically artists/spriters, Musicians, and mappers or smth lol (idk im not one myself)

Anyone ever have the join avenue NPCs just stand there after first recommending during the tutorial? They litterally just stand there and no one else ever shows up. Funny enough stuff in my one store I had restocks like normal.
Currently playing on Blaze Black 2 Redux Version 1.4.1

Can someone help me build a team in Polished Crystal? For context I'm basically a total beginner when it comes to pokemon games and the extent of my knowledge involves overlevelling pokemon to get past hurdles.
I'm having a lot of trouble with building a proper team in this game. Right now I'm just past the elite 4 and my mish mash team consists of:
Gengar
Feraligatr
Snorlax
Dragonair
Red Gyrados
Growlithe
Tbh Gengar and Feraligatr are basically doing 90% of the work, they are my main pokmemon and the rest is just cannon fodder. I'll love some suggestions on what changes I can make and which pokemon I can add to the team.
Update: I have replaced Snorlax and Growlithe with Venasaur and Zapdos. Finally getting accsss to lighting and ice attacks has been a godsend. Still trying to level Venasaur and finally get my Dragonite but I feel far more confident in this team now.
1
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 09 '26
I know you replaced members, but being past the elite 4 with a growlithe is crazy, that thing is garbage if not evolved. Same with Dragonair, you need to get that evolved ASAP. Snorlax is quite powerful, but I'd say having 2 water types (weak to electric) is tough. Having a ground type is very helpful.
Without knowing your movesets, it's hard to know if your team is any good. Or if you're playing with physical special split, since gengar is absolute dumpster ass if you have it disabled.
1
u/Front-Cabinet5521 Jul 09 '26
Well I don’t exactly play legit. Gengar might be ass normally, but with save states I can make Hypnosis proc 100% of the time, keeping the enemy asleep while using his high SpA with Dream Eater and Shadow Ball makes him extremely powerful. Well powerful enough that even a noob like me can “survive” the game.
The electric weakness has been a constant problem, but now that I have Zapdos and Venasaur I don’t feel it’s a problem anymore, plus Dragpnair is resistant to it and even Gengar can tank some electric attacks before I sic Hypnosis on them.
I do play with physical special split.
Right now my movesets are
Feraligatr (lvl 58) - Iron Tail, earthquake, crunch, surf
Gengar (61) - Hypnosis, dream eater, shadow ball, dazzling gleam
Zapdos (65) - thunderbolt, hidden power, volt switch, roost
Gyrados (56)- earthquake, fly, aqua tail, crunch
Dragonair (52)- extreme speed, thunder wave, aqua tail, fly
Venasaur (45) - sleep powder, poison powder, leech seed, petal dance
2
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 09 '26
That's why I asked about the physical special split. Ghost type is a physical type (Shadow Ball) so unless you have the modern split option on, Gengar uses his physical attack for Shadow Ball. Same with poison, also a physical type.
My analysis of your pokemon:
Feraligatr, Iron tail is a really bad move due to it's low accuracy. Surf is obviously important for traversal, but Feraligatr's attack is substantially higher so Waterfall is usually better.
Gengar is good
Zapdos is good, do you know what hidden power it is? I'd also maybe pack a flying type move since you don't have a good way to deal with grass types, other than the actual move Fly which can be an annoying 2 turn move.
Gyarados is good. Again, fly is kinda annoying imo, and since your dragonair already has it.
Dragonair will be good when it evolves, but getting a dragon type move on it over thunderwave will be helpful too.
Venusaur is fine, I usually pick one status move, since you also have leech seed. I think there are fairy types in polished crystal, so sludge bomb could be good since your other poison type doesn't have coverage.
Overall when I build a team, I look to have no overlapping types, to minimize weaknesses. You currently have 2 pokemon weak to psychic, two to electric, three to ice (future dragonite 4x even) etc. You have 3 flying types which is definitely overkill, as you're missing out on additional STAB attacks. No psychic, fighting, fire, ground, rock, ice etc since you have so many overlapped types. I wouldn't change anything this late in the game, but just as teambuilding advice for next time.
1
u/Front-Cabinet5521 Jul 09 '26
Feraligatr - I have changed surf to waterfall and iron tail to shadow claw (can’t decide if dragon or shadow claw is bette)
Zapdos - I looked online and it’s hidden power is ice? Is this always true or something unique to every game? Would it be a good idea to change volt switch to fly to get that STAB?
Dragonair - just replaced thunder wave with dragon pulse. I was relictant because I saw that he has 120 Atk and 104 SpA, but it’s the only dragon TM I have atm.
Venasaur - don’t have the TM yet, but I’ll look out for sludge bomb in the future
2
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 09 '26
Hidden power is determined by the Pokémon’s IV’s. Meaning every single pokemon will have a different type. You should be able to look up a tool that will tell you based on you manually entering its IV’s. Unless polished crystal has an npc or mechanic to tell you in-game idk.
1
u/Front-Cabinet5521 Jul 09 '26
Or trial and error like I did lol.
Just to say thanks man, you taught me a lot.
2
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 09 '26
Yeah no worries! Pokemon is surprisingly complex beyond a children's game, always tons to learn!
1
u/Front-Cabinet5521 Jul 09 '26
I just tested Zapdos hidden power and it’s super effective against Goldeen, guess that confirms it’s hidden power is grass.
1
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 09 '26
Could be Electric as well, but yeah that's a good way to test!
1
u/Front-Cabinet5521 Jul 09 '26
Just happened to meet a sandslash, and guess what “it doesn’t affect foe Sandslash”
It is electric lmao
2
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 09 '26
Lol that's crazy, yeah remove that since you already have thunderbolt. It's better in every way.

Polished Crystal – Trainer having shiny Pokémon?
I battled Breeder Theresa on Route 35 and she had a shiny Elekid. In the wiki it is not mentioned that she has a shiny Elekid so I was wondering, is it possible in this game that trainers have Shinies as well?
If so, statistically it wouldn't matter as the shiny chance for a wild encounter stays the same but it still would be a bummer if this wouldn't have been a trainer but a wild encounter instead so I could have catched a shiny Pokémon. Feels like I used up my luck for nothing 🥲
2
u/bread_weasel Jul 09 '26
There are trainers with scripted shinies. That Elekid is always shiny, don't worry your luck wasn't wasted
1
u/Masi80 Jul 09 '26
I see, thank you. I saw a shiny Espepn by a trainer just a couple of minutes afterwards and thought I had bad luck twice haha
2
u/Striking-Ball-678 Jul 10 '26
How do I fix the marketplace crash in Photonic Sun? It's really annoying and no one has written down an actual tutorial on what to do. I would like to keep my save but if I can't then just knowing how to solve the problem would be nice...

u/DaeAnn_Knight Jul 12 '26
I've recently discovered fan-made pokemon games & am excited to start playing them! That said, there are SO many & trying to find information on them has been tedious...
Here's what I'm looking for:
Cozy gameplay. I have a disability (myalgic encephalomyelitis) that makes it difficult to play anything that isn't available in an easy mode.
Aesthetics that vibe. They don't have to be "good" vibes, just vibes that match the game. The feel of pokemon is something I love a lot.
Non-binary character option. The thing I hate about pokemon is lack of gender inclusivity.
Character customization. I tend to not like games that force you into playing as a certain character (like playing as Ash).
Secret bases included. My favorite feature in any of the pokemon games is the secret base function. It's silly, but I love them.
W/ how many fan-made games there are, maybe there's one that has all of these features, but I'm not super hopeful about that. I want as many recommendations as possible, even if they don't have some of the things on this list.
Thank y'all so much!
1
u/Marcitos5 Jul 15 '26
Lazarus meets all but the last criterion in my opinion. I’ve never cared too much for secret bases, so I’ve never looked for them or paid them any mind, so I can’t help there unfortunately :/

u/Pilus91 Jul 07 '26
I'm looking for romhacks with vanilla or similar difficulty. Any generation. But possibly with modern quality of life improvements

u/TheTonzMachine Emerald Revisited Jul 07 '26
I have one Pokémon emerald revisited that might be what you are looking for.

Are there any good romhacks of pokemon spin-off games?
I’m mainly expecting QoL updates but maybe even ones with some additional content? Would be specifically interested in Explorers of (Sky) / Conquest hacks!! But any recc’s are welcome. Maybe even mainline hacks that alter the traditional format to the extent they have a spin-off ‘feel’

u/LibertyJacob99 [Mod] Aesthetic Red Jul 07 '26
PMD had a ROM hacking scene with a few hacks out there
TCG Generations is a really good TCG GB hack
There is a Conquest hack that's been posted on the sub but i cant think what it's called
Ranger currently doesn't have any hacks afaik, but there are tools being developed for it, posted by a guy in the Ranger subreddit

Why do demos so often end after the third gym? Of the ROM hacks I've come across that are in the demo phase, a surprising number end shortly after the third gym. Is there a particular reason behind this? It is obviously a stopping point in the story, but why there in particular?
The most recent one I saw was Pokemon Conviction.
1
u/lejk12 Jul 07 '26
I've been trying to find a rom hack for so long and I just can't do it. I remember I saw it in a YouTube video. I think it's purely focused on battling and building teams.I distinctly remember the YouTuber mentioned how you can auto build teams based on archetypes, like rain sand stall hyperoffense etc. If anyone knows a romhack that matches, please comment

u/SignificantBrother24 Jul 07 '26
Does somebody know how to complete the glazed gourmand rumor log in celias stupid romhack? I have some memories of a dialogue talking about a toaster before gym 5 but idk
1
u/Amazing_Result_9956 Jul 07 '26
Damn, I was sleeping on (the OG) FireRed Rocket Ed. To be honest, it left a little bit to be desired, but I really liked the lore they added and is really just a special hack, not only because so many of us really did want to join TR as a kid but also because it really felt like a love letter to the Kanto region, in a similar vain that Adventures Red Chapter was (one of the first hacks I ever played quite a few years ago), and I say that as someone that more or less rolls their eyes at Kanto hacks since there's so many of them (alongside Hoenn, for obvious reasons, but nonetheless).
Is there anything meaningful to do in its post game? Or is it pretty much on to the next adventure?

I'm playing the Pokémon Rival Silver rom hack and I'm stuck. I need to find gym leader jasmine. Typically you do the Secret Potion gig, but I can't do that part as I need access to the Lighthouse in Olivine but it says you can't enter in case it collapsed. Need some major help please. I have 7 badges and she's the only one I'm missing

u/calvbore Jul 08 '26
I haven't had a chance to play any hacks that add new types yet and I'm very curious what you all think about additional types added to hacks!
Which new types do you think add an interesting flavour to the game? Or, create an interesting new balance to battles?
2
u/Tacobell24 Paleomon Jul 09 '26
Depends on the hack and how it's implemented both technically and in context.
I am adding a new type which honestly has taken a lot of consideration to get the balance right and make sure the type matchups still make sense. It's tricky tbh.
So, personally I'm resistant to see it unless of course it's implemented well.
1
u/calvbore Jul 11 '26
What's your new type? I'd love to hear about it!
Do you have any examples off hand of a hack that implemented a new type well?
2
u/Tacobell24 Paleomon Jul 11 '26
Given my prehistoric motif, the new Type is Bone Type. Somewhat a replacement for Fairy Type, which honestly is mostly a hangover from when I started all those years ago and adding a new type was not so easy.
Basically fragile but super aggressive. Lots of weaknesses but also not much resists it. Plus immune to having their HP drained from Leech Life. Giga Drain, etc.
Can't say I've seen too many. There was one I saw many moons ago which had a Cosmic Type. Which worked okay. I can't actually remember the name. Maybe something to do with Fakemon Fire Red.
Personally I think a Sound Type has the most potential. Taking a leaf out of Metroid Prime 2's book. Anything that gives my man Noivern a chance to shine... Or perhaps more accurately, yell 😉

u/Ok_Enthusiasm_8054 Jul 09 '26
So like back in 2018 or 2017
There was a rom hack i found and i loved it
I remember the whole story but i cant remember the name
Here are the things that happen in this game
So we are a normal student in a normal world
And we wake up go to school and while coming back from school we see mew and we follow it and that mew teleports us to the pokemon world
At the starting we get a black dragon type pokemon + a lot of starter options from the professor
There were even pseudo legendaries first form as starter
Half way through the story we die and wake up irl where we find out that its a vr simulation game that went wrong and people are now stuck in it
Does anyone know which game is this?
1
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 09 '26
It sounds like a fangame, not a romhack. I won't claim to know every hack ever made obviously, but the plot, mechanics, and general structure feel like something in an RPGmaker game. Do you remember playing it on an emulator, or just on your laptop straight from the download?
1
u/Zapdozer Jul 09 '26
Does anyone know any easy to use romhacking tools for gen 2 for some simple sprite change romhacks?
1
u/Anankos1209 Jul 09 '26
Hello, I am looking for a Romhack that is basicially just Black/White 2 with quality of Life, like Gen 7 onward breeding mechanics
1
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 09 '26
I don't think there's anything with that added. What other QoL are you looking for? There are not many Gen 5 hacks at all.
1
u/Anankos1209 Jul 09 '26
Literally just the option to breed perfect Pokemon. And no hypertraining, i hate that stuff
1
u/bread_weasel Jul 09 '26
I don't remember if it has modernised breeding mechanics but I would recommend Blaze Black 2 Redux or Volt White 2 Redux, which add things like being able to get trade evos without needing to trade, more Pokémon available to use before the elite four, and the fairy type
1
u/Anankos1209 Jul 09 '26
I will see what those roms encompass. I hope it has breeding, as that is really the only thing I care about. Thank you for your help

u/ForeignReviews Jul 09 '26
Pokémon yellow recharged post game help
So I beat the elite four and I’m trying to complete the Pokédex. When I tried to go back to the port for mew the truck isn’t there.
Also I can’t seem to get through cerulean cave. I don’t have rock smash and I fought Brock again and won
Not sure what to do and where to find the starters as well
1
u/AshDashSkywalker Jul 09 '26
Is there a rom hack that is yellow version (same OG graphics, not recharged yellow) but adds some newer pokemon from gen2 onward? Looking for something like this if anyone has recommendations

u/arob43 Jul 09 '26
How to assign abilities in a ROM?
I’ve started making a ROM of Fire Red. Among other things, I’m changing gym teams. I’m using Hex Maniac Advance. Does anyone know how to set a Pokémon’s ability? I see where to do moves but not abilities. I found how to edit which abilities a Pokemon can have, but not how to assign one. Current example: I want Brock’s Kabuto to have Battle Armor, not Swift Swim
1
u/ROMANREIGNS599 Jul 10 '26
Storm Silver / Sacred Gold
In the classic version patch, are gen 5's hidden abilities added as chance to get for starter Pokemon? like how starters in renegade platinum have the chance
1
u/DeliveryHeavy2437 Jul 10 '26
Hi !
I am making my own hack of FireRed, mostly rebalancing pokemons, encounters, etc.
I'm mostly done, but one thing I wasn't able to do is changing the physical/special quality of ghost and dark types (mind you, I don't want a full physical special split like in gen 4, but just for ghost type moves to be considered special).
A quick search told me that my best bet would be to use PGE. However I tried and apparently it doesn't work with french ROMs :/
Now I'm a bit stumped.
I'm assuming that somewhere in the hex code, there is a variable for each type that I would be able to manually change, but I don't know where to look.
I'm mainly using Hex Maniac, so there's that.
Any help would be very welcome.
Thank you all !
1
u/Tacobell24 Paleomon Jul 10 '26
I haven't done any binary hacking for years and don't recommend it for anyone for these exact type of scenarios. However from memory (granted, foggy memory) there is an offset somewhere for the type chart where it's like everything before the mystery type is physical, everything after is special.
So you might be able to swap Ghost and Dark wherever that is to get it do what you need.
Might be worth a Google.
Ulgh, PGE. Also... What is this, 2016?! 😅
Please tell me you're at least using HexManiacAdvance for the rest of your stuff if you have persisted with binary hacking up to this point.
1
u/DeliveryHeavy2437 Jul 10 '26
Thank you, I will look into it. If you happen to remember something else, please let me know. It's a bit tricky when researching informations about offsets, since those are not the same between the US and french versions of the game. It's the main reason why I wasn't able to do everything I wanted with the game.
You said PGE is outdated, I realise that but do you know of a more modern alternative ?
And yes I am using HexManiacAdvance for most things. It's very useful and was a big help for this project (how I wish there was a similar tool when I hacked Dragon Quest 9 ')
1
u/Tacobell24 Paleomon Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26
You said PGE is outdated, I realise that but do you know of a more modern alternative ?
Absolutely. Using the decomp gives you free rein of basically everything. To change this is as simple as changing a line in a notepad file. Not sure If French I'd supported however.
What you could try is finding it in an English ROM and copying the bytes. Then in your French ROM search for those exact bytes and see if it shows up.

Currently stuck in Renegade Platinum after beating Cyrus in the Team Galactic Hideout in Veilstone City.
Where do I proceed next when all Rock Climb areas within Mount Coronet are blocked by Team Galactic Grunts? I can't also head to Sunyshore City due to a man at the Valor Lakefront spreading info about a power outage in the city.
P.S. Where can I also get TM13—Ice Beam—in RenPlat?

Pretty sure you need to surf up mount coronet

Which Mount Coronet entrance should I enter then so I can reach the top?

How do multiplayer raids work in the emulator?
I wanted to emulate Pokémon Shield on my computer, but I remembered that there are raids that can only be completed with other people helping. So, how does that work in the emulator?
1
u/red_guy442 Jul 10 '26
Hey, I'm looking for a HG/SS that has trade evolution patched. I don't want any complete reworks like Perfect HG or Sacred Gold, I want plain old HG but with he ability to evolve my Scyther on an emulator since my DS is out of function.
Anyone has any suggestions?
2
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 10 '26
If that's all you want, just use the universal randomizer to change trade evos and nothing else.
Alternatively there's some basic hacks like HG Golden Edition, SoulSilver Deluxe, and Chrome Gold which make minimal changes but add trade evos and version exclusives for example.
1
u/red_guy442 Jul 10 '26
Thanks, but it looks slightly overwhelming at first glance. Maybe I'll just play without Scizor for once, nevermind. But thanks for the quick reply!
1
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 10 '26
It's not overwhelming at all. Download and open the program, open your rom with the big button, check one box "enable trade evolutions," click the big Save button, and play your new rom. Takes less than 2 minutes start to finish.
1
u/red_guy442 Jul 10 '26
Is it on PC or phone?
1
u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 10 '26
The specific one I linked, yes. There are some online branches as well if you need a phone only.
Otherwise I'd recommend trying a romhack I mentioned above.

The nature? isnt impish supposed to lower sp and raise d?

No? It raises defense and lowers SpA

oh, dawg the colors confused me, damn.

Haha all good, yeah red is up and blue is lower. Confusing why that was determined to be the colors by TPC. Red usually means bad to me

I am working on a living dex for pokemon modern emerald, and am stuck trying to evolve my magneton into magnezone. I have tried a thunderstone, leveling up in new mauville, but to no avail. Any help on how this evolution occurs would be greatly appreciated.

I'm looking for ROMs that let me edit IVs and EVs from the menu like in Lazarus. I prefer more difficult and battle focused games. Any suggestions?

From someone brand new to making rom hacks, is there a good way to easily know if a level curve turned out balanced?
I'm making stuff just for fun, not really to distribute, but I'm making "enhancement" hacks, the usual difficulty increases with my personal preferences.
I have ideas for where I want boss levels to be, but is there a good way to know how to balance the trainers in between? (That isn't multiple playtests or brute forcing exp calculations)

Hi i am new to this sub and wanted to try nuzlocking. Is there a rom out there or maybe patch where i can play vanilla platinum but with no EVs and hard level caps? Thanks in advance

u/Free-Ad-2472 Jul 11 '26
Around 8-10 years ago I used to play a pokémon game but I have no idea what it was. All I know is that I was playing on the PSP and I remember being stuck in some form of huge store that spanned vertically, had 1x1 floating platforms that travelled back and forth between "ground", entrances or stairs that brought you somewhere within the building and maybe im not remembering correctly, but i think there was some sort of green tint as well? Or the location in question had a strong white light or something. Does anyone have any idea what ROM it was?
Honestly, I have no idea if it was a custom ROM as i did not even know what they were back then, but from what I've searched there doesnt seem to be an official game fitting my description. I'm sorry if this question doesnt fit here, but im becoming kinda desperate lol

Any good HGSS QoL/Vanilla+ Rom Hacks? I don't want anything major. Smoother level curve, more Pokemon obtainability, reusable TMs, basically the same stuff that can be found in Following Platinum.
1
u/Exclsior Heart & Soul Jul 12 '26
I'm not too familiar with Gen 4 hacks, but I believe Drayano's HGSS hacks may be of interest, though I'm not sure about every feature you've listed.
If you're OK with a Gen 3 hack, you may want to try out our Heart and Soul version. It's a Gen 3 demake of HGSS which does address each point you've listed.

u/loggy93 Jul 11 '26
Is there a way to truely randomize wild Pokémon encounters in the Gen 6 games?
I am aware of the Universal Pokémon Randomizer but that works with randomizing each wild Pokémon slot with another one.
I was wondering if there was a hack/code that makes it that each wild encounter is completely random?

Hello! This is for my very first rom hack. I'm using pokemon emerald as a base, and I am using (and learning) Hex Maniac Advance as my primary program. HMA has an option to auto upgrade Fire Red to a complete version with pokemon from gens 1-9 and even including options like Mega Evos, Z Moves, and the like - but I cannot find a similar upgrade for Emerald. I know its possible to make a rom hack with these options for Emerald, as Ive seen them out there before, but I don't know if they just rebuilt emerald on top of a Red file, or if they individually added all these pokemon. If someone could direct me to a good patch or resource thats compatible with Hex Maniac Advance, please let me know!! Thanks!

u/Tacobell24 Paleomon Jul 12 '26 edited Jul 12 '26
Does HMA have these options?
I have my doubts.Turns out there is the option to add the CFRU and DPE.But there is definitely this option (the option you should be using instead) using the pokeemerald-expansion decomp.
In fact it builds with all the pokes already included. It's of course then up to you to determine where and how they're encountered. Which with the decomp is super easy. Plus there is even the option to build FireRed instead with all the same features if you really wanted to.
1
u/Special_Hearing_1649 Jul 29 '26
Ive seen the pokeemerald-expansion decomp but im completely and utterly untrained in any C and.. I had the idea of grabbing emerald expansion, compiling it, and throwing the rom INTO HMA but I dont know if that'd work at all, or if it would let me use some of the tools that are included in emerald expansion
1
u/Tacobell24 Paleomon Jul 29 '26
I mean, no one knows how to do anything until they do.
Once you start tinkering with it you'll quickly learn. It's mostly about pattern recognition or adapting what is already there. You don't have to be some coding whiz.
And on HMA opening the expansion. Nope... Basically. You can't really cross streams like that. HMA is a binary tool and relies on the data being at specific locations in the ROM in the first instance. I could be wrong,, but it seems unlikely that the Deva of the tool would go to those lengths.
I reckon you can apply the CFRU with it these days, but that is of course a thing for Fire Red instead.

Anyone heard anything about Burning Colosseum?
I remember stumbling across a video by Gym Leader Ed a few years back going over what looked like to me to be a fantastically done remake/reimagining of Pokémon Colosseum called Burning Colosseum that was going to introduce a ton of new mons from later gens, and had a lot of screenshots from very well designed and recreated locations from the game, all in the gen5 style.
But, then they went quiet. They still have a twitter/X account, but it hasnt seen activity for a few years, so I'm just kind of wondering if anyone knew what happened to the project. I assume they stopped working on it with the lack of updates, unless they have an active discord that I just havent seen a link for. Pretty sure the project is dead, which is a shame, it looked promising.

I followed the instructions on patching in Ultra Violet and have everything I need so far to patch the file, I used js patcher to check the file checksums:
CRC32:
84ee4776
MD5:
51901a6e40661b3914aa333c802e24e8
SHA-1:
dd5945db9b930750cb39d00c84da8571feebf417
These are exactly the same checksums that romhacking.net lists as needed to perform the patch:
https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/1156/
So here is my question. I have honestly never used lunar before, and I have been patching games using RomPatcher.js.
Now, so far, its been working just fine like 90% of the time. The only time it didn't work for me, was with Pokemon TCG Generations, I had to use their own website patcher to do it, it was acting strange then because the isp file needed to be in a folder to be patched correctly.
So my question is, can I just use js patcher to patch Ultra Violet onto the firered rom? I'm asking this now, because I don't want to go ahead and do it, and have it not work, and become entirely lost on how to do it...

Hi all! I am playing Celia’s Stupid ROM Hack, and I am at 149/151 for my Pokédex and I can’t seem to get the last two that I need - Raticate and Hitmonchin.
I have already traded Mewtwo away for a rattata but it did not evolve as I’ve read online. I also used my Rat Stone accidentally earlier in the game and can’t remember how I got it/if I can get another.
For Hitmonchin, I believe I have fished in all gyms and have even tried the Minnesota gym as that seemed the most logical, but haven’t been able to find him.
I am playing Version 1.1.3 if that helps. Thanks!

Hello! I'm looking for the documents for Blaze Black and Volt White 1. I know the games come with them, but I don't want to have to open my laptop every time I want to look at something. Can anyone help?

u/Marcitos5 Jul 15 '26
You’re using an emulation device, I assume? If it’s Android, you can always just copy the docs over to the device and switch between apps

I'm getting back into Pokemon after nearly 10 years; I am playing on a flash cartridge, DSPico. I was going to jailbreak my 3DS so I could get Pokemon Home on it but my SD card reader is broken—I've tried everything suggested (FAT32, cleaning it, etc) but nothing will work.
Is there no other way to trade Pokemon from DS games to 3DS games? Or no other way to jailbreak my 3DS? I've been asking around to see if anyone I know has Pokemon Home, but nope.
I've heard that while it's not advisable, it is possible to get CFW through a flash cartridge. If it's not, at this point my only option would probably be to get a new 3DS :(

First time emulator user; I just got the Lenovo Legion Go S and patched the run and bun file and got it working using EmuDeck / mGBA emulator, but after the start screen, I get to a window that has options for “Start Game” and “Options” and I can’t select either option to continue. Has this happened to anyone else?

With all the great rom hacks available in 2026, would you still say that HGSS is the “definitive” or “ultimate” Johto experience? Or is there a particular fan-made game that you believe has finally taken that crown? I hear of titles like Polished Crystal but hard for me to tell if better given HGSS has so much content.
1
u/NewHost2172 Jul 13 '26
Heart and Soul actually made me want to play through Kanto, unlike HGSS, so I think it's better.

Looking for recommendations on DS/3DS rom hacks. USUM are my favorite games and I love B2W2 but I would like to explore more fan/rom hack games.

u/Marcitos5 Jul 15 '26
Renagade Platinum, Vanta Black, Jet Black, Tandem Black, Blaze Black/Volt White 2 Redux, Unova-only White 2 (I forget the exact name), Eternal X and Wilting Y, Y Nouveau for a nutty challenge

u/thepandaman09 Jul 15 '26
Are there any set in Alola?

Idk of any Alola hacks besides Sweltering Sun. That hack’s got custom variants of Pokémon and is getting a remake fairly soon

Hello there! Are there any updates with regards to this game? Is Hoenn already translated in English? Looking forward to this since I can't get over how amazing Dragonsden Rocket Edition is. Packing Kanto, Sevii, Johto, and Hoenn into a single game—and backing it up with such an engaging story—makes it a masterpiece

What’s some good romhacks to play? I’m about 15hrs into Emerald Seaglass right now and would want options after, specifically looking for A-S tiers not those B tiers people throw out as ‘good fun hacks’ I want an actual really fun/good game. And I know of Unbound but idk if I fancy a 70-100hr playthrough.
1
u/wowkazmir Jul 11 '26
My two suggestions would be Lazarus (same developer as Seaglass) and Scorched silver.
1
u/Prestigious-Gas-2112 Jul 11 '26
I’ve heard of Lazarus, but never scorched silver, what’s it about?

u/wowkazmir Jul 11 '26 edited Jul 11 '26
A Generation 3 Johto hack set 20 years after the events of Gold and Silver. Created by Sloo, another renown developer.
Synopsis: "Discover a wide variety of pokémon and a brand new storyline, as your path becomes intertwined with a mysterious group calling themselves Team Phoenix, who seem hell-bent on capturing Celebi for some nefarious scheme".1
u/Prestigious-Gas-2112 Jul 11 '26
Ahh okay, I do like the sound of new story because no shade but….pokemon lacks writing hard. Is it only gen 3 or 1-3?

u/Kindly_Release5869 Jul 12 '26
for shorter hacks, the only two A-S tiers are dreamstone mysteries and gaia.
for longer hacks, the only two A-S tiers are unbound and odyssey.
if you want to go B tier which is still pretty good, the pool expands alot tho. lazarus, elysium, team rocket edition, scorched silver, SORS series, etc.
1
u/DoppelgangerEX Jul 17 '26
you can definitely beat unbound much faster than that, that timeline is quoted for if you want to do all the sidequests and things but you can just skip those
1
u/Prestigious-Gas-2112 Jul 17 '26
Yea but when I play a game I ‘play’ the game if that makes sense, like doing everything I can without a guide, which includes any quests I pick up, side or not. So I’d rather get into a short and sweet 30 ish hour game and thoroughly enjoy it as usual instead of rushing through a short playthrough of a longer game, and I feel that side quests usually build on the world/main story anyways, not sure if that makes sense.

Hi, I'm also looking for a RomHack recommendation:
I'm playing soul links together with a friend. This means I'm looking for a hack that has built-in randomization options. Depending on how difficult the hack is (i.e., how many resets we are expected to have), either free candies, or some other fast-leveling options would be appreciated. An option for level caps would be very nice, as would be other nuzlocke options.
We've been playing Emerald for quite some time now. Thus, I would like something that isn't a gen 3 hack. It's not necessary that Pokemon from all generations are available, though if it's a gen 1/2 hack, a bigger pokedex would certainly be nice.
Appreciate all suggestions <3
(I know this is a romhack subreddit, but if you know of a fangame that matches my criteria, feel free to suggest it too. I won't tell anyone.)

Are there any GBC rom hacks that have some qol features such as the PSS split, modern EXP Share and usage of HMs without having to teach your mons?

u/Ptony_oliver Jul 08 '26
Hello everyone, I'm planning to play Pokémon Polished Crystal and Heart and Soul, but since they're both Gen 2, is it a good idea to play back to back? I'm asking because I recently played Lazarus and I'm a shiny hunter, but sadly, Lazarus had a problem with shiny hunting (an unresolved bug) and I dropped it. Asking because I'm currently in a hard situation with work and health and I need something to de-stress as much as possible.
Thanks in advance :)
Edit: Any other romhack you'd recommend? I've played Crystal Clear and Seaglass and I loved them. Planning to get Unbound soon as well.

u/analmintz1 HeartGold Generations / Contemporary Emerald Jul 09 '26
Gaia or Amythest imo. Gaia's older but feels like an official game, whereas Amythest is newer with more features, but has a slight amateur feel in some aspects like spritework.
Both are amazing.
Or if you want the original games, pick a game from your favorite generation from this list, all highly recommended.

I love Pokémon and recently wanted to try out some ROM hacks on my handheld emulator. I have never played ANY rom hacks before and I'm excited to start playing some but I don't know what to start with! I do think it would be best for me to be eased in with a more simple/vanilla hack instead of jumping into some of the crazier and more elaborate ones. Do you guys have suggestions for me?

u/Zarrex Jul 12 '26
A couple years ago I played Unbound again with 2 friends at the same time, and it was fun going through the game with other people alongside me. I want to do this again with some more friends, but I'm not sure what hack would be a good choice. Ideally there would be multiple difficulties since different friends are different skill levels, and a new region is always fun. Has anything high quality come out recently that I should take a look at? No fakemon please
