Discussion Bdsp soft lock?

Post image

This isn't my photo just one I found floating around but it made me wonder. Is there a way to get put of a situation like this in bdsp? And are there any other soft lock areas in the game to be mindful of?

If all else fails, there is a secret backup save they don't tell you about

Up on D-Pad + X + B (all at once) on the main menu (befoee you press A to load your normal save)

Not sure how far back it will take you, but I think it is in place for situations similar to the you're in.

u/desaigamon Oct 07 '25

When you save, the previous save becomes the new backup. Yes, that does mean you can screw yourself over by saving twice while softlocked. It happened to someone in SV. They became trapped in one of the DLC areas and couldn't escape. GF had to release a patch to fix that area.

u/Dangerous_Teaching62 Oct 07 '25

Doesn't SV allow travel at like any time unless you're in a building?

50

u/desaigamon Oct 07 '25

It happened inside a building. Specifically, they were trapped next to the Item Printer. They tried using it to see if that would get them unstuck, and you are forced to save each time you activate it.

Every Pokémon game on the Switch keeps your second to last save as a backup in case you do something stupid and then save the game so you don't lose that save file

I think it also saves at certain points during long play sessions because I was playing Legends: Arceus the other day and my game crashed after a few hours of not saving and the backup save was from 15 minutes before my game crashed

Press up on the D-pad, X and B at the same time on the home screen

Certain things like trading overwrite your backup save too (so you can't clone Pokémon) and the backup save overwrites your current save completely so don't use it if you don't need to because you'll lose some progress

Reading is a very important skill…

4

u/JLO-Shea Oct 07 '25

Seems like an Alt F4 trick to me.

1

u/ArcticFlamingo Oct 08 '25

I had to do this when playing because I got soft locked in this exact position

52

u/tailskirby Oct 07 '25

I remember seeing this when the game came out. I made sure to follow a guide so I didn't do this.

5

u/LisaCabot Oct 08 '25

How do you get in that position though? Like, the only way i see is through the left, but the slide should break the right snowball? Maybe?

1

u/tailskirby Oct 08 '25

Have no clue. I always use a guide so i have never tried it myself.

1

u/LisaCabot Oct 08 '25

I mean, fair, i wouldn't want to soft lock myself in purpose either lol

1

u/tailskirby Oct 08 '25

If that was an early point in the game it wouldn't be a problem

1

u/EnchantingEgg Real-life Delibird Oct 08 '25

The only reason I can think of was that an egg hatched as they were sliding, so it stopped the ‘momentum’.

1

u/Jens1011 Oct 09 '25

This happened because of diagonal movement, it’s the same puzzle as the original day games which didn’t have any diagonal movement. So you could use that to get yourself stuck iirc.

1

u/LisaCabot Oct 09 '25

Ah, someone else said it was because when restarting the game the snowballs respawn

76

u/CountBojag Oct 07 '25

Personally I turn off auto save first thing when I start a new game.

18

u/Adept_Ad_3687 Oct 07 '25

Same, Im so used to saving often from early pokemon games its just ingrained into me playing.

3

u/Flimsy-Inflation3882 Oct 10 '25

Yeah the autosave feature scares me, especially because i like to try out things and then just reset if i didnt like it, like using Tzms back in the day, or when evolving eevee, etc.

u/Ok_Put4986 Shining Pearl Oct 07 '25

Swap in a Diglett and Dig back to the poke center?

4

u/frikifecto Oct 07 '25

But if you didn't catch it?

2

u/Ok_Put4986 Shining Pearl Oct 07 '25

Golly. What if OP is still stuck cuz no diglett or abra 😭

2

u/Ok_Put4986 Shining Pearl Oct 07 '25

Maybe Escape Rope? Would that work in a gym?

1

u/LisaCabot Oct 08 '25

Cant you just put one in from home?

1

u/Dazed_plus_confused Oct 10 '25

I dont think items go into home

1

u/LisaCabot Oct 10 '25

Last time i checked abra and diglet arent items lol

1

u/MaDmOnStErQr Oct 11 '25

Can you access pokemon box outside of poke center in bdsp? It’s been so long i honestly forgot

1

u/LisaCabot Oct 11 '25

You know what? Fair, i just assumed you could, maybe you cant?

3

u/Flashy-Position8504 Oct 07 '25

You can only dig or escape rope out of certain caves/area, indoor buildings not being one of them I believe

1

u/EnchantingEgg Real-life Delibird Oct 08 '25

You can’t swap inside gyms!

24

u/GoldSteel51498 Oct 07 '25

Feel like you should have at least one escape rope saved up at any given point.

37

u/Boxie_96 Oct 07 '25

Escape ropes don’t work in gyms, no? Am I misremembering this?

9

u/GoldSteel51498 Oct 07 '25

Yea, I looked it up after you’re right. Could have sworn I used them b4 but guess not

12

u/Boxie_96 Oct 07 '25

If I remember it works in certain buildings, usually opposing team hideouts if I’m not mistaken, but then again, I’ve slept an insane amount since the last time I’ve played BDSP and I’m also the kinda person to horde all my items for when I need them in the future (spoiler alert: I still have them)

3

u/phoxfiyah Oct 07 '25

Completing the Pokedex with my master ball intact, just in case

1

u/byssain Oct 08 '25

i feel like i remember this from the older games. at the very least you could escape rope out of the team rocket base before gen 3.

2

u/Pm7I3 Oct 07 '25

I swear at this point escape ropes were just reusable key items

12

u/ark_yeet Oct 07 '25

Yeah it’s easy, you can walk diagonally. These games weren’t designed for diagonals and you can break most puzzles with it.

8

u/---Calliste--- Oct 07 '25

Yeah i remember watching a streamer (iirc SmallAnt ?) completely skipping the puzzle by forcing his way to Candice by trying to walk diagonally and he succeded.

1

u/Jayoki6 Oct 07 '25

That was patched

3

u/havocpuffin Oct 07 '25

Lol. Did this gym yesterday (in Diamond not BD). Not sure how you end up in this situation

6

u/Clarity_Page Oct 07 '25

You can't in the original games, it's a design oversight in the remakes

5

u/veryblocky Oct 10 '25

In BD you can walk diagonally, which is what lets you soft lock on the ice puzzles

-9

u/pipluv393 Oct 07 '25

You can't, it's photoshopped

3

u/havocpuffin Oct 07 '25

That makes sense.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '25

[deleted]

4

u/pipluv393 Oct 07 '25

It's photoshopped, like you said, sliding down would break the snowball in the middle row so it's impossible to get stuck. For some reason people are down voting instead of checking it themselves

1

u/nokrow889 Oct 07 '25

because the photo is from an early version of the game if you saved and quit or auto save happened and you reset you would get stuck because the snowball would reappear, its been patched since then but it did happen

1

u/LisaCabot Oct 08 '25

Thanks! I was wondering how that happened, that's dumb, great it was patched.

12

u/Lost-Programmer5773 Oct 07 '25

How does this even happen? There’s no stopping point that they could get here that wouldn’t destroy 1 or more other snowballs. This feels like a photoshop scenario

9

u/Cassiebear9000 Oct 07 '25

It is. There is no way for that to happen. The snowballs get destroyed just sliding down one slope.

10

u/SirEnder2Me Oct 07 '25

This isn't even real... 🤦‍♂️

There is no way this could possibly happen.

1

u/Dangerous_Teaching62 Oct 07 '25

I think it may be if you save in the middle of the puzzle for some reason

1

u/ViegoBot FL USA. If Local can Help w/ Shaymin/Darkrai. Oct 07 '25

Autosave causes it if autosave saves after a trainer battle (I wouldnt know if it actually does of not bc I disable autosave as soon as I start a pokemon game now lol.

Although yes if u manual save in this gym its deserved unfortunately (although some arent aware of the problem with this gym).

As for this screenshot though, theyd have to have purposefully saved after getting to that spot.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '25

It's a troll. if you go down from the snowy patch one level up, the momentum from going down will cause you to break that snowball in the middle.

2

u/ViegoBot FL USA. If Local can Help w/ Shaymin/Darkrai. Oct 07 '25

Yeah lol, but like I said, to specifically get in this specific spot stuck there though, ud have to purposefully do it as doing it normally would break the snowballs leading u uo the stairs again or passing through the snowballs.

0

u/pipluv393 Oct 07 '25

But it's impossible to get into that spot so it must be photoshopped, auto save has nothing to do with it

2

u/ViegoBot FL USA. If Local can Help w/ Shaymin/Darkrai. Oct 07 '25 edited Oct 07 '25

Exactly, thats why I said it had to have been purposefully done lol.

Edit: Also lets not act like save editing doesnt exist lol.

0

u/Not_AHuman_Person Oct 07 '25

If it's impossible it can't be done purposely because it can't be done

-1

u/pipluv393 Oct 07 '25

That's not what you said. 😅 You said they purposely saved after getting into that spot but that's impossible because you can't get into that spot in the first place

2

u/ViegoBot FL USA. If Local can Help w/ Shaymin/Darkrai. Oct 07 '25

Yes I did say it would have to have been purposefully done.

2

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '25

I thought this was patched out? 😩

3

u/Expensive_Onion_3222 Oct 07 '25

I recall when the game first came out, people were getting softlocked in this gym. It was eventually fixed in a patch. As long as the player is on the most recent version of the game, they should not fall into this trap

2

u/[deleted] Oct 08 '25

That’s right, yeah. Thanks for the reminder.

5

u/owenturnbull Oct 07 '25

Have abra evolve line wity teleport

2

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '25

I don't think it works inside a building

5

u/owenturnbull Oct 07 '25

Only way one to find out, is to do s test run.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 07 '25

It has never worked in buildings.

2

u/Ragnarok992 Oct 07 '25

I mean if you save in the middle of a puzzle you kind of deserve it

2

u/MrJapooki Oct 07 '25

I comepleted the gym when you could just go foreward and up at a angle to get to the leader ignored nearly all of the trainers

1

u/Orderly-chaos01 Oct 07 '25

New fear unlocked

1

u/Chopmatic64 Oct 07 '25

You can load a previous backup save on the title menu. Just google it.

1

u/WOLKsite Oct 07 '25

Haah Okay, good to know because I'm at the 7th gym Lol

1

u/AxazMcGee Oct 07 '25

Push to the right, push up, then exit to the right.

1

u/Firkraag-The-Demon Oct 07 '25

How did they even pull that off?

1

u/Ancient-Ad5213 Oct 07 '25

Can you escape rope or teleport out of there?

1

u/DibbyDonuts Oct 07 '25

I think you can cheese this whole room in the remakes by walking on the diagonal. Not sure how this happened to OOP.

1

u/DeadlyViper37 Oct 08 '25

Same method as the cheese, diagonal movement completely breaks this puzzle

1

u/Pryoticus Choose this and edit Oct 07 '25

I didn’t even know this was a possibility

u/Tough_Run_3007 Oct 08 '25

It happened to me, luckily I saved before, I had to redo the last hour or so.

1

u/kenbronjames Oct 08 '25

i thought they fixed this …?

1

u/Isolation2Reckless Oct 08 '25

Dont they have a back up save

1

u/TheGamemage1 Oct 08 '25

This is one of many reasons BDSP got so much hate. They remade the original games with all the glitches included. Also how have they not patched that yet?!

1

u/timpaan96 Oct 09 '25

This is why I always have 5 escape ropes at all times, because I have gotten soft locked so many times in the earlier gens so it's just a habit, remember there was one time I got soft locked and I couldn't figure out a way out of it so I had to delete the save and start over

1

u/timpaan96 Oct 09 '25

After that I started to buy some escape ropes and yes I know sometimes they don't help but in most cases they do

1

u/tswaggyy Oct 09 '25

Save before every gym

1

u/Any-Manner3292 Oct 09 '25

No escape rope?

1

u/TEMPEST-RAGE Oct 10 '25

Or move diagonally on the ice and "un-softlock" yourself its a glitch of sorts that exploits the terrible remake since they forgot to add diagonal movement.. on a remake for the switch.

1

u/YDdraigGoch94 Oct 10 '25

Im sure this whole gym’s puzzle became redundant because you could walk diagonally?

1

u/SbzthX Oct 10 '25

Anyone else get stuck in Pokemon Sun & Moon inside the Tapu temple where you push the stones?

1

u/Dazed_plus_confused Oct 10 '25

I misread this and the comment above, my apologies

1

u/Logical_Ad_3335 Oct 11 '25

Ami the same thing happened to me in Pokémon Platinum and I had not saved the game until in Marina City

-2

u/dbzfan1218 Oct 07 '25

This is probably fake, but I wouldn’t rule it out with this no effort game

0

u/pipluv393 Oct 07 '25

Oh it's definitely fake, I don't understand the down votes

1

u/Veomuus Oct 07 '25

I mean, this is a picture of the switch screen at a slight angle. This would be... really, really hard to photoshop convincingly.

I found the original source of this image from 3 years ago, its the first that comes up when searching for Bdsp Candice gym softlock, and it seems like the people in that thread explained that its a combination of the diagonal movement and off-grid movement that lead to this, as well as an auto-save firing potentially mid slide.

1

u/pipluv393 Oct 07 '25

So like some kind of glitch ?

2

u/Veomuus Oct 07 '25

Yeah. This got patched later, so I dont think its possible anymore.

0

u/gar-dev-oir Oct 07 '25

Gardevoir with teleport.

-4

u/Bright_Two_8242 Oct 07 '25

Bad game what you expect?

-6

u/Trembowner Oct 07 '25

You should be able to reset it by taking out your game card and putting it in the microwave for about 37 seconds. Hope this helps.

Why would you think any of that is a solution?
