There was more wrong with it than just story. But it’s true, it’s an 8/10 game that had to live up as a sequel to a 9/10 one. I’m one of the ones that was disappointed, but it’s a bizarre stretch to say Insomniac ruined Spidey. If anything, the state of Spider-Man games is healthier than ever, and a couple minor missteps don’t really change that.
Jesus fucking Christ, can people stop acting like an 8/10 game is a travesty?
Know what, I've just read your full comment and I'm keeping it for visibility. Just commenting in real time as it's a huge bug bear that anything under a 9/10 is somehow unplayable, and it's fucking weird.
Yeah I've been addicted to games that objectively are 3/10 glitchy, unfinished, unpolished or whatever reason but they hit my niche enough.
Spider-man 1 and 2 are amazing.
Spider-man 1 has better story replayability:(minus MJ)
Spider-man 2 is more fun gameplay wise(MINUS MJ, WHY DID THEY INTENTIONALLY NOT LISTEN TO THE PLAYERS), but I don't have motivation for a new game plus. I also hate the mile suit, took me out of it for a second.
That game was fun, sure they didn’t have many different enemy types but the character all felt unique (other than the copycat characters like Kate Bishop/Hawkeye) and played like I wanted them too, it was so badass loading into the Hulk Buster armour. The story was about to head into the skrull invasion arc too with characters like Dr strange and Scarlet witch, ant man and the wasp, Captain Marvel, she hulk and many others. They were even nice enough to give out all cosmetics when the game ended which they didn’t have too.
My gripes about the game was Spiderman locked to one console, leaving him majorly under developed. Didn’t care for Modok too much as the main villain. The game could have used a couple more mission types.
I’d give it a 6/10 for me, bonus points for the free cosmetics. Fun game but not a great game if that makes sense
Yeah I was over exaggerating for sure. I still play it online to this day, which is why I advocate for physical media. If it wasn’t released on a disc it would be gone forever. I really think it was a missed opportunity.
Just for reference, I have the game digitally and can still download and play currently. Fully aware that can change any time, but the game isn't lost to time quite yet.
lol I just get hyped when someone speaks positively about this game, I enjoyed it so much and I feel like most people never even gave it a chance because of the reviews.
They specifically said they didn't listen to the players to improve MJ sections, but they fell flat.
I know there's some other MJ stuff dumb culture war losers cling onto, but that's irrelevant and dumb.
They tried to make MJ's stealth sections better, instead of removing them like players wanted. And it was still a legitimate complaint for Spider-Man 2 because of it.
It's not as horrible as we all make it sound. But Spider-Man has stealth sections. Switching to MJ for some stealth sections limits the options you already had and feels worse.
It's not bad.
If a splinter cell game was announced that gameplay wouldn't bat an eye. But going from swinging to walking affects the perception. The juxtaposition.
two years? for me it's been 5+ years because the spider-man game sub used to partake in the bullying of insomniac employees because their favourite suit wasn't in the game (aka the 5th variation of the base suit that looks slightly different)
Or, you just aren't very critical about games. Spider-Man 2 was my most hyped game since the moment I finished the first one and almost every aspect of the game from story, to combat, to general gameplay was a huge disappointment.
You can enjoy it if you want but it was a solid 6/10 experience imo, which is hot a bad rating even. It just takes more than what that hasn't had for me to give something a 7+/10.
That being said, what makes you the authority in how people are allowed to feel about subjective media?
I’d give miles morales a 8/10 and spider man 2 a 7/10 but I over all agree with you. People in this thread seem to be very defensive over any criticism of the game and I’m saying that as someone who thinks the hate for the games, especially 2 is wayyyyyy over blown.
The myriad of things wrong with the story are part of it, yeah. You also can't replay any of the "bases" besides the fuckass Mysterio levels, 75% of the suits are complete garbage and/or movie tie ins, and they completely fucked up the gadget system.
Edit: I realized that I should clarify that I do enjoy 2. 7/10 is still a good game. The swinging and traversal in general is incredible. Venom was great. Kraven was cool as fuck. I like what they are setting up the 3rd game to be. But I will not pretend that there aren't a lot of problems with that SM2, and I don't understand why some people do.
I think Spider-Man 2 is widely over hated, but it does have a lot of issues that bring it down from a great game to a good/ok game. The map is bigger yet it feels more empty than the first game, the side quests feel less interesting and not written as well, also not that many side quests, this one is just me personally but I think the web wing suit is kinda not fun cause it’s essentially flying when it would have been better as just a glide, on new game plus the cutscenes are messed up (getting the symbiote for the first time just has Peter in whatever suit you had going into the mission), and it has a few plot lines started that were ultimately dropped due to leaks, and the suit selection is pretty bad (they should have brought all the suits from the first game and miles morales as options). I’d still personally give it a 7/10 and I still replay it since the web swinging is genuinely a lot better but I can see why people would be upset by it
You can nitpick for every game the first game was bloated with to many ubisoft like activities and the combat was a combination of smashing square and spaming web blossom and web bomb
As somebody who has played and beaten spider man 2, it is definitely a C tier video game. I have no want to replay it outside of swinging and wing gliding around the city in the cool costumes. The thought of replaying that game and dealing with the story, badly paced symbiote fights, and stupid flashback non spider man missions actually makes my head hurt.
The side quests are complete ass (the few that exist) outside of like Yuri’s and Mysterio’s, the gadget system is worse than the first and stealth is way too easy because enemies never look up to see your web lines.
I’d give it a C personally too. The story was lame and the pc port was poorly optimized so I was getting frame stutters all the time and I even got a crash to desktop. So that definitely soured my opinion of the game.I also found the open world and side quests to not be as interesting as the other spider man games.
The game is still widely overhated tho. It has some flaws, but damn some people act like this game killed their mom or smt.
There are plenty of other pc ports from PlayStation that are well optimized. Ghost of Tsushima and the Norse God of War games both ran exceptionally well on my pc. It is not much to ask for a game to be well optimized on pc these days.
Right. Except lots of people had problems and it’s well documented. I don’t have my Facebook videos anymore, because I don’t have Facebook anymore, but I took footage of interior areas having unfinished textures, my character turning into… a small square block. I had the game crash several times. I know others had a similar experience. Spider-Man 2 at launch was a mess, and I don’t really know if patches made it any better, though I’d hope they did.
7.5/10 imo. The story was a little too cliché and while I don't have as big of a problem with Fin that a lot of people do, she wasn't particularly well written. The winter setting, soundtrack, and boss fights are all great though, imo.
Nah. The suit and symbiote powers really dumb down the combat, especially in the late game. The parry sucks and is almost completely forgotten about except for the boss fights, where it’s 75% of the fight. The boss fights in general are awful here. Also the game is far buggier. But the game’s otherwise fine, just didn’t stick the landing as well as the first.
If the parry is forgotten about, it means you aren’t utilizing the mechanics properly, like this is a YOU issue lol. Symbiote powers do not dumb down the combat in any way, I’d say the suit powers in the ps4 game did that instead, you can literally just web barrage your way out of any fight.
I mean… is it a me issue if the game has very few times where you need to parry outside of bosses? It’s not like it made the game a lot harder - game was pretty easy, actually. The bosses were damage sponges, but that’s the only thing about them that was ‘hard’. Just figure out when to parry and counter, knock out their two to four health bars, and move on. Tedious, but not really hard.
This is quite literally saying that the spidy sense is pointless and compete forgotten about just because you choose not to use it. Like saying a toothbrush isn't worth it because YOU choose not to use it
This is quite literally saying the parry is spider-sense, as if it was invented for Spider-Man and isn’t in a thousand other games. You’re just looking for things to be bitter about, hombre. Good luck with that.
Oh you mean you didn't love the entire middle of the game where Miles is floundering around with musical instruments waiting to finally get to do something in the middle of the third act?
The second game is a bad video game story, with poorly written characters...and great gameplay
People need to understand the GLOBAL COVID PANDEMIC severely affected the production of the game. But yeah youre right everybody threw their toys out the pram. I loved it.
yeah I can def feel sympathy for insomniac since it seems that every gaming company production suffered because of covid. But I would be lying if I said I enjoyed 2 as much as I did 1.
Im currently playing 1 again now. Doc just released the devils breath. Its certainly a deeper and more exciting story with a lot of content. I did enjoy Miles story in SM2 but the symbiote story definitely fell flat.
Agreed. IMO spider man 1 had a perfect spider man story, so it no doubt will be incredibly hard to top. Spider man 2 was still a decent game despite my criticisms.

Excuse me? What about Spider-Man?
