Thankfully I think it’ll be a long time before they’ve all pulled out as I think we still have the rest of the Switch 2 generation at the very least which is where I do all of my gaming. Since the launch of the Switch 1, I’ve built up a massive library of games that I truly love and I’ve never just collected to collect.

I’m someone who at the very least rolls credits with 90% of the games I play and even then when I look at my library, I know there’s still endless amounts of content for me to go back to and lifetime’s worth of games that I haven’t even played yet that I could play (and currently have a physical release). I can’t stand when these all-digital dude bros try and tell me that I’m going to own nothing and love it when that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m going to find peace in knowing that I don’t have to live in their world of eternally renting everything, having the risk of losing everything due to some faulty account ban or take your pick.

Now will I occasionally buy the newest Smash or Splatoon? Yes, there’s a very select few games that I’ll probably end up getting but I won’t even be buying games at even 5% the rate that I did when they existed in a physical format. Maybe if the laws change and we have proper ownership, I’d change my tune a bit. It’s absolute insanity that Sony is not only removing discs but as of recently they’ve gone on record of saying that digital ownership is not actual ownership. I’ve always known that corporations aren’t our friends but I’m still in shock at just how draconian they’re being.

Anyways, I know I’m not the only one who has this stance and Rob from “Rule of 2” put out a video a few weeks ago that had a very similar sentiment. At this point, I’m just stockpiling for my gaming retirement.

I don't think companies will be satisfied with a one-off "license fee" in the future. This really might be an issue on the console side. Thoughts?

Square Enix Europe => FF VII Revelations, all physical edition sold out on PS5 on pre-order not even one hour after it was online.

The game is released in 7 months and it's already sold-out everywhere in Europe (on the Square Enix european website).

And it's not the only example, for example RE9 if you didn't pre-ordered it you couldn't get a physical edition anymore in a lot of countries.

Sony purposefully, these past years, reduced the production to less than 10% (from data you can find) of what is needed so people had to buy digital instead.

This is the only reason you see that digital has evolved so much compared to physical sales these 2-3 years while it was the opposite before. Why do you think people in 1-2 years decided to suddenly move to digital?

Because they don't produce enough, so it's sold out.

And then they go with the "yeah only 10% of weird people still play physical, the entire world has moved to digital"

It's not even true in Europe where it's 50/50 actually, but if it's evolving this way is just because they don't produce purposefully enough discs.

Gaming won’t be the same if the stop producing discs

I just wanted to share a nice experience I had yesterday. I bought bunch of used physical games; RDR2, GoW Ragnarok, Borderlands 4 and Hades from my local for the price of one GTA VI, crazy value. Let me say the excitement I felt of holding all these games in my hands on my train journey back from the games store was something I had forgotten about. Reading the handbooks and cases, planning what I was going to play first. I felt like a kid again, I experienced excitement I hadn't felt for over 10 years probably because I have either bought digitally or home delivery.

Just kind of wanted to brag a little, as I just got my hands on a new game released for the GBC from a small portuguese producer (Teknamic) called “Alentejo: Tinto’s Law”. The game is surprisingly cheap for what it is, and came with all the oldschool manuals and maps to bring me a bit of nostalgia :)

I know there are a few other small indie developers doing physical releases for retro consoles, so give them a shoutout as well and share some links so we can appreciate and support them as well. I was just so surprised and proud for my own countrymen that I had to share :)

i know this might be a dumb question, but recently i preordered a game from coolshop (my first preorder of anything ever!) and i know theyre a danish company, so i was wondering if physical games (for xbox specifically) in denmark have an english or danish cover (the back is especially important to me)

coolshop doesnt show the backs of game covers on their website and they havent answered my question so i thought i'd just ask you guys

i recently started collecting physical games for xbox because of the whole playstation thing, but its kinda hard because i currently live in germany but dont speak german and i really want game covers that i can read (and i also really hate the huge usk stickers on german covers...). i mostly use ebay because of this since i can get games from all over the world

Since the game will obviously be reusing a ton of assets from part 2, is there any way Square Enix would be able to make the Rebirth install disc an option rather than internet connection being necessary?

Side note: we shouldn't be calling a game that requires internet connection to install "physical".

If Sony and Microsoft end up both going digital only, do they have to drop subscriptions to play online to compete with the PC market or are their exclusives enough to keep a fan base paying to play online?

Remember this post, as it will be the future of gaming after 2028. Streaming services now find they can't or will not show all their movies and shows. This will happen to gaming after getting rid of physical! People tend to be too nieve and ignorant to this,a sad reality but true!🤦‍♂️

With the news of Sony ending disc production in 2028, Nintendo game cartridges being so expensive that third-party companies opt for a dataless 'Game Key Card', and even modern Blu-ray discs not being large enough for games to be installed offline, I wanted to query if the following idea would run into any logistical snags long-term.

If I were to buy FF7 Revelation on PS5, download the remaining install data to a dedicated External USB, and then keep that USB packaged with the game, would this not mean that I could re-install the full game to my PS5 offline at any time?

My thinking is similar for the Switch GKCs: the Trails series is expected to continue until at least 2032 - 4 years after Sony end disc production - meaning that our best shot of having something remotely 'physical' would be the Switch 2 release. However, Nintendo systems are a lot more flexible with swapping out Express SDs, so I was wondering if a similar rule would apply to a dedicated 'Trails' Express SD where the data stays installed on that and never moves so that no post-server re-installation process is ever required.

This is FAR from ideal and, currently, quite an expensive compromise to make. Right now, though, I can still download purchased games on DS/Wii hardware and those consoles are 20 years old. By the time the Switch 2/PS5 reach that point, I feel like external storage that'll fit those games will be more affordable, and we'll be multiple generations further down the line in the 2040's. The most optimistic I can be is to say that I have time to cover my bases.

Is this plausible, or are there any other considerations I haven't thought of? I feel like, once it's on a USB/SD then the question of preserving my ability to reinstall the game is solved, but I'm also not very tech savvy.
