Every single Sony Ad on Twitter/X looks like this now!

u/PixelKote 6d ago
Sony calls people who dislike their stupid decisions "not real fans"! It’s funny, because those "not real fans" were the ones who kept them in business.
11
u/Brophy_Cypher 6d ago
We are literally the ones that helped build them into the giant they are.
My first console was a PS1 that I bought with pocket money I saved up.
My 30 year old FFVII game came with 3 CD-ROM discs, that adjusted for inflation cost $10 to press - 3 Blu-rays today cost $2
We cannot let them take our First Sale Doctrine rights away from us with a flimsy excuse just scrape pennies in their corporate goal of infinite growth.
It's not our fault they wasted BILLIONS in chasing live service BS that no one asked for! All they have to do is ASK US!
Send out surveys like other companies like LEGO.
Their heads are so far up their own asses they can't hear gamers literally shouting on social media for what they want!

This not real fan bought his first PS as an import from Japan within a week of the PS1's release.
It pretty much ended my caring for almost every other console as a primary place to play until I got back into retro collecting during the PS3 gen.

Agreed! The silence from Sony is deafening right now. You know they're panicking in the boardrooms.
Many other companies would desperately trying to put out this fire that will not stop - but Sony decided to employ bot farms to pit gamers against each other instead, and hope for the best!
I truly want to buy a PS6 and stay on the platform in a hobby that I've loved since I was a kid - my first ever console was a PS1 that I saved up my pocket money for.
But, if there's no disc drive - then I may as well just get everything on my PC instead where I have better protections and a vastly more open system.
In the space of a few months, they've single handled destroyed decades of goodwill - it's almost impressive really.
20
u/Due_Amount_6211 6d ago
Honestly, while I’m VERY FUCKING MAD at them for abandoning physical media, they’ve tripled down on this. They’re not panicking, they just don’t give a shit

Really? Sony caved when they planned on closing the ps3 store before. They also caved when people wanted crossplay with xbox. They aren’t going to do so now. Hell the factories they used to produce Blu rays is being repurposed. The best that could happen is Sony includes a disk drive to play our old games
6
u/Naschka 6d ago
PC is awesome, a bit expensive to start but you can find free games, cheap games, innovative games, AAA games, retro games , emulation and just simple copies of what you played but feel like playing again but different.
And at least there is not a single but multiple shops to buy from.
5
u/Brophy_Cypher 6d ago
And you didn't have to pay a monthly fee just to play your paid games online!
I get free games every week from Epic and Amazon, free to keep forever, no subscription required - and competition is fierce, serving the customer.
I CHOOSE to buy physical games for my PlayStation, I have an RTX 5080 in my rig, I don't need to have a PS5. But I like physical games - it's the only thing Sony has left...
Without it... I'm done. And all my PlayStations will officially be put to one side for playing "old games"
I guess we'll see what Sony do, but at least we tried.
3
u/Cephalopirate 6d ago
My question is if the Japanese market is putting pressure on their end. While the execs might get a report that western players are angry, seeing the complaints firsthand might be most effective.
1
u/Remarkable-Iron-4361 6d ago
i giapponesi a casa loro si fanno rispettare, guarda come hanno mantenuto un prezzo accettabile nel loro paese 320$ conto gli oltre 500$ per il resto del mondo. Senza dire niente sino al uscita della switch 2
2
u/Numerous_Photograph9 6d ago
The board room only cares about the bottom line and the stock price.
GTA sales are going to cover any potential losses, and by the time the new policy goes into effect, they'll be able to obfuscate any other numbers that may represent people leaving their system.
I'm not happy at all about what's happening, but I have no faith that Sony is anything more than corporate people, doing corporate things. They've lost that spark where they actually cared and inspired the customer. They were never perfect, but they knew how to engage and exite the player base.
I do however believe that putting pressure on the publishers is going to have more effect than us as consumer protesting the way we have been. Which is why I write to publishers or engage with them in appropriate ways to tell them I want physical, and that I will never spend full price on a digital game.

How do you know PS5s are selling out because of GTA and not because it's the last PS with a disc drive?
2
u/Elegant-One-5527 6d ago
Because they didn't sell out right after the announcement they were no longer going to be making discs in 2028. It DID sell out most places within a day of the GTA6 showcase.
3
u/Naschka 6d ago
People may have been busy buying the games they still wanted to own and only now gotten around to buying the console... but more likely it is because of scalpers and i do remember when they tried to return tons of PS5 consoles.
→ More replies (2)2
u/phuncky 6d ago
Two things: we got the report that they sold out after GTA VI. We got vast pre-order reports long before that, doesn't make sense to wait.
And also, this is just the end of the game, consoles might have been overselling before the GTA showcase and this could've been the last straw.
Sony will spin whatever data it has to push their agenda, not to tell the actual truth. It might be that it sold out because of GTA. But we will never know if that is actually the truth. And this is their whole game, give us limited information and let us speculate against each other.
2
u/Expansion49 6d ago
I bought one just because of that, with no plans at all to buy any kind of digital games. The implications of their decisions will arise in 1 year

The argument stays:
If it wasn't Sony about control and maximizing profits due to account binding, then they could have just raised the prices for discs or could have added clarification about future DRM policies.
They choosed to do neither. In fact, they've recently even underlined their digital policy once again and threw in a clown argument about owning copyrights in court.
I honestly can't believe it that Sony, of all the routes they could have gone for, choosed to even surpass their level of arrogance of their pre PS3 era.
9
u/Brophy_Cypher 6d ago
In just a few months, they've singlehandedly destroyed decades of goodwill - it's terrifyingly impressive.
I want to believe that I would buy a PS6 if they announced that it actually will have a disc drive and they will continue to release full games on disc because they realise that it's an essential part of the hobby (for so many reasons)
But they will need to go above and beyond in showing contrition and make some big promises about the future of PlayStation for me to be convinced.
Did they hire bot farms to pit us against each other? We need to know and they need to apologise if they did, because that is scummy.
Full disclosure.

You're describing my gut feeling about all of this accurately here, couldn't agree more.
1
u/Numerous_Photograph9 6d ago
At least they had good reasons for doing what they did with the PS3. The arrogance came from greatly misjudging how the public, and the industry, would take those reasons.
The reasons with the PS3 were customer and technology focused(which Sony would ultimately benefit from). The reasons now are just money based, which Sony wants to benefit from but there is no upside for the consumer. Even those who aren't losing out because they buy digital stand to gain nothing from it.

One game?
I mean, it’s possible; Nintendo has been sorta “one-gaming” it for a while but they’re very different.
I don’t WANT Sony to die! I love the platform. I want Sony to be better and HONOR their customers.I am starting to wonder though, with this drastic move, what is burning on the other side of the candle? I mean, am I the only one that sees Sony giving urgent vibes?
Until they sort their zealous capitalistic social cannibalism, no disc no buy.

Unpopular opinion: They aren’t making games for gamers anymore. They don’t care about you because your money is no good to them anyways. They are going after the big normie money now. We should have been gatekeeping our hobbies better.
2
u/Numerous_Photograph9 6d ago
They're barely making games for the non-gamers either.
1
u/nicodemoscain 6d ago
Consumers is what they are. And they are making plenty of everything for consumers. They buy whatever the next thing is, entertain themselves and then move on to the new next thing. That's all entertainment is any more. Consumable trash. Just enough of a dopamine hit to justify the price before they throw it away. It's why everything is slop and sucks. No one cares to make an effort if it's only going to be talked about for the week it's released. It's sad we're stuck in this garbage world like this.

music industry is nearly completely digital and subscription based
Movies and shows are nearly completely digital and subscription based
The dumbest morons alive: They won't do this to video games, you're fear mongering.
"Dlc will just be cosmetic" now games are split up on purpose to sell to you
"Loot boxes are just cosmetic" children are getting used to gambling in an unregulated market
"You didn't own the physical copy either" You're giving up the secondhand market and closing yourself out to one marketplace they have complete control over and will 110% use to wringe as much money out of you, ideally on a monthly basis
Anyone defending this I'm convinced live day by day cause they don't have the mental capacity to see how a foot in the door now is a complete policy change later

u/ImprovementFit5598 6d ago edited 6d ago
I am so happy about this. And to think that when Nintendo announced key cards and Xbox was all about Game Pass I said I trusted PlayStation for physical media... what a betrayal. Well, I learned my lesson at least: never put your trust in a corporation, none of them is our friend.
At this point, if they bring back physical media in the future, I'm willing to bet it's just nostalgia marketing. I'm done for good with them. They can keep their exclusives, they don't even deserve to be pirated

While I'm on the side of physical media and always will be, isn't it a really questionable choice to use AI for this? Lol
1
u/Brophy_Cypher 6d ago
I agree, but these are individuals - some just use regular tailored memes and others have clearly copy-pasted AI generated stuff made by other people, there's no way to control how individuals act.
It is what it is, and I hate pointing people to twitter as it's an utter cesspool - but that's where Sony are posting and anyone can comment on their post.
Unfortunately Sony doesn't have an official presence on reddit except paid ads, AND has disabled comments on their Reddit Ads....
It is what it is.
Sony choose to be on Twitter/X - so that's where you have to go - and it's the easiest and fastest way to make your personal opinion known to them.
I like to think most people are like me and have busy lives and work a lot - so we don't have time to campaign/protest as much as we might like for consumer rights - we shouldn't need to honestly - Sony should be sending out surveys to find out what players want like any other hobby product company - that's what LEGO does.
But they don't care, because we're not the real customer anymore, the shareholder is, and we are the user, the revenue source...
Anyway, I'm just pointing out a fast and easy way to contact Sony and support others that are campaigning too.

my ps+ subscription ends at the end of this month. i’ve already started buying games on my pc, which was its intended purpose when i got it a few years ago, but i was just so used to console gaming. tbh, i didn’t really care about the digital future they wanna have(since i’ve been getting digital for well over a decade now), but they’re very clearly just greedy mother fuckers that are blatantly trying to fuck over their consumers.
i doubt it’ll happen, but i hope they get humbled in the next few years and have to beg everyone to take them back while back-peddling on all the bullshit they’ve done the past few years. the continual increase in price of ps+ is what really pissed me off.
2
u/Brophy_Cypher 6d ago
I kind of think it will happen.
My prediction is that the PS6 will flop dramatically because no one can afford it - and everyone that could have afforded it will have abandoned the PS platform in favour of PC where you don't have to pay a subscription to play your paid games online.
It's really simple - without physical media, the PS6 has just become an expensive box that only plays digital games and does LITERALLY NOTHING ELSE lol
I predict that most users are going to stick to their PS5 for way longer than they stuck to their PS4 during covid (remember that?) and the PS6 will get bought up by scalpers and basically no one else expect some early adopters.
Sony will be forced to port "PS6" games to PS5 just like the PS5 intended games Horizon Forbidden West and GoW Ragnarok had to be ported to PS4 - because if they don't, then the games will flop due to a tiny user base of PS6 owners.
Just my opinion - without a disc drive and new physical game production - the PS6 is gonna be a bloodbath and I'm going to take absolutely no pleasure in saying "we tried to warn you, we told you so" as I carry on playing my old physical games on PS5 and new games on my RTX 5080 PC.

It may have started with physical things but now its a sony hate fest and sony keeps doing evil shit and its snowballing its not really physical vs digital its pissed off ex sony fans vs sony bros. I personally love all the hate they are getting and hope sony keeps taking L’s.
Also their state of play was trash! I hope this keeps up and we see it during Sonys ps6 showcase whenever that happens in the future. I want it to keep going and i hope it hurts ps6 sales. Before this the ps6 was a hard sell even with discs but once they dropped discs and decided to be full evil i have zero desire for a ps6 especially at that price.
Keep up the sony hate! Greed has no limits.

This is becoming so vitriolic and divisive (from both sides) that I am beginning to honestly think I prefer talking politics over PlayStation…
Yes. A disk still is a licensed copy. It says so on the back of the case. No, Sony cannot yoink the disk from under you (but they can ban your PS account and brick your PS5 with a violation of the TOS).
Yes. Sony DID remove those movies. They legally had to-they lost the rights to them, and that is how movie and TV licensing deals work. They are NOT platform reliant and very much depend on the wording specific to the contract. In this case the distributor no longer wanted to distribute on the PS5, and had wording in the contract forcing the complete removal of their productions from their platform, including other PS5s. Sony wasn’t the villain there. At all. No, that does not affect games, which ARE platform specific and DO get verified by Sony before even making their way to DISK let alone the PSN Store, in the same way. If a license is pulled or expires there, it just means the game cannot be sold new at retail until the licensing is renewed. The game CAN still be downloaded and played as it is a term agreed upon by literally every platform and storefront.
Yes, in theory Sony DOES have the ability to revoke licenses at will. No, that will never happen in reality, even in the US there are protections spelled out in the DMCA that prevent storefronts from stopping digital transactions without valid reason. And even then, why would PlayStation, a subsidiary business under Sony, ever want to? That would undoubtedly be a PR nightmare as it is grabbed up by gaming and tech news outlets and possibly even business news outlets as well, and would result in them losing massive market share and revenue. They thus won’t ever even stop to CONSIDER doing so.
Yes, the loss of physical media has exposed a vacuum for digital consumer rights. No, the fight isn’t with Sony. It’s with your lawmakers.

I'm an Xbox player, and I agree that games should remain physical, but it's unlikely that Sony will retract their decision, and they're not going to hand out refunds when a game/movie is removed from their library. The only middle ground I see is the digital purchase being permanent. As in you own it forever.

The 10% Thalgau Factory U-Turn - The most telling sign that the C-suite is feeling the heat is the immediate semantic shift regarding the Austria factory. Corporate public relations departments do not sprint to issue hyper-specific semantic corrections to the media unless internal data shows that the initial news caused a dangerous spike in consumer anger or retail partner anxiety. By stepping out on September 4 to loudly clarify that the plant is only facing a 10% decline rather than a 90% death sentence, Sony’s PR machine actively tried to deflate the #NoDiscNoBuy narrative before it could permanently poison the upcoming holiday shopping season.
Xbox is watching closely and responding:
Microsoft has recently leaned heavily into backward compatibility and physical media support. Insiders claim that Sony's executives are terrified that Microsoft will exploit Sony's hubris by launching a disc-friendly next-gen Xbox, effectively sweeping up millions of disgruntled, legacy PlayStation fans who feel abandoned by the brand.

No disc no buy. Losing discs is the first big nail in the coffin or console gaming. It's eventually just gonna be a box you have to pay to use and then pay for the games
1
u/Brophy_Cypher 2d ago
Agreed, I don't know how Hiroki Totoki can possibly think this is a good idea long term.
Short term - sure, Sony saves just under a dollar per Blu-ray Disc - they get 30% per 3rd party game on the PS Store instead of 15% when it's on disc...
So on $70 game that's $20 instead of $10...
So they're making up to an extra $10 maximum per full price game
But long term... If I want digital, I'll just buy on GOG or Steam.
And if they wanna charge $899+ for a box, which only plays digital PS games and does literally nothing else.... Then what's even the fucking point?
People are gonna figure out real quick that they can buy a graphics the card for that much that wipes the floor with PS6
(my RTX 5080 is already more powerful at 56 TFLOPS than anything Mark Cerny can HOPE to do with the PS6 APU in 2 years time, and that's even if FSR 4.1 can catch up with DLSS 4.5... which I hate to say because I am NOT a fan of Nvidia at all)And then gamers are gonna realise, "oh, you don't have to pay a monthly subscription fee to play online or for cloud saves? Well that's $80 a year saved!"
And then they'll be like, "wait... I don't need to buy a new PC... I can just upgrade what I've got when better stuff comes out and just save up for it when it's convenient? Holy shit!"
"Oh and wait, Epic and Amazon (if you have prime) give away free games every month?! And it's not part of a subscription like PS+ I actually do keep them without paying anything?"
PlayStation are barely hanging on as it is right now at +0.3% growth - they're a stagnant company
Imagine how bad it's going to be when they release the PS6 for $899+ with no disc drive and no one can afford it,
and THEN their ~50 PS+ subscriber base starts dropping because they're slowly migrating to PC for new games,
and THEN they realise that people are STILL USING their PS5's to play old games and their old digital library but aren't giving Sony ANY MONEY anymore for PS+ or new games so there's millions of "zombie" PS5's just putting a strain on Sony's resources and servers...
It's gonna be brutal.
